We had amazing dim sum here at Yan's Garden. The food was delicious and the service was fast. I definitely would recommend checking this spot out for dim sum.

peking duck 3 course combo -$108.88
    Cally Y.

not bad! we got the 3 course peking duck combo ($108.88) and shrimp fried rice (~$21). portion for the rice was huge, had a fair amount if shrimp. peking duck is cantonese style (southern china, served as the whole duck and sliced in front of you) and slices featured more meat than skin. skin was crispy and the duck meat wasn't dry! the duck lettuce wraps were also very flavourful but i wish there was a bit more. the only disappointing dish was the soup- all i tasted was salt/msg, and the stuff inside was just tofu, bok choy and duck bones. i would have appreciated a richer duck taste but it just felt like i was drinking saltwater.

We came at 10am on a Saturday and the restaurant was empty when we got there. When we left at 11:30 the whole restaurant was basically full. They serve everything in the carts. There's some things that they won't have in the carts which then they will tell you to tick off on the paper to order it. We ordered steamed beef trip in special sauce ($9.28), steamed rice flour roll with scallops and seaweed ($9.88), deep fried sesame balls ($8.58), deep fried milk custard ($8.58), pork and shrimp dumpling shao mai ($8.38), har gao ($8.38), deep fried taro ($8.38), steamed pork ribs ($7.88). Tea is $1.50 each person The steamed beef tripe in special sauce had a strong tripe flavour in a good way. You could taste the innards flavour. Some restaurants bleach it and clean it really well so that you can taste it but this place has cleaned it just enough. Flavour was good and I would order this again Rice roll with seaweed and scallops. There were slices of scallops throughout the rice roll. This rice roll is different from the rice rolls you usually have at dimsum. It's not chewy like the ones you find at other restaurants. Instead it's really smooth and has a slight rice flavour. According to my grandma, this is the way it's meant to be. The ones that are chewy and bouncy is the new way of doing it now. This one is based on personal preference. If you like traditional style, this is the way to go. Deep fried sesame balls were not too sweet on the inside but the outside was too thick (also not chewy enough) and it wasn't crispy enough outside. We found out later that they have a different kind that's the thinner one. This one is pushed out on carts and not on the sheet so be warned if you are looking for the thin skin one. The shrimp dumplings or har gao were okay. Lots of shrimp inside and very bouncy but the outside skin was a tad too thick The taro fried dumpling was not crispy and flaky enough for me. The inside filling was pretty decent The pork shrimp shao mai dumpling was pretty good. Lots of pork little shrimp which is how it should be. It had a good bite too it and was well flavored The pork ribs were not bad. Meat was soft and portion was big. The fried milk dessert was interesting and definitely not what we were expecting. You drink the milk custard that's inside. Outside is crispy but also not hot. Inside was cold as well. Interesting but would only order it once. Overall dimsum was not bad. They have dishes here you might not find elsewhere. No major faults. Some of the servers pushing the carts can be a bit pushy. They try to sell you the dishes that have been sitting their the longest. Other than that the other servers are really nice and fast. They have servers specifically just to pour tea and get the bill. Would I recommend it? Probably not as none of the dishes stand out. But if you are looking for some solid run of the mill dimsum. Then this place is actually not bad

Food is good. Got the normal dim sum carts. A little aggressive when giving food but otherwise good service. Everyone speaks canto so be aware of that. Very busy with good atmosphere. A very gold dim sum place.

    sunday dinner with the fam

reservations were made for dinner at yan's garden to celebrate a birthday at 6:00 pm on a sunday. this chinese banquet style restaurant, located in a strip mall on lougheed highway and north road, has been around for years. no surprise that this place was pretty packed on a sunday evening. the restaurant is well lit, seating around 180 people with modern decor and three private rooms. it's an award winning place that serves dim sum daily (with trolley push carts). the service was decent, and our server was patient as we asked lots of questions, especially because two out of seven in our group were vegans. for the non-vegans, we started with the breaded and fried crab claw, which was quite substantial and served with sweet and sour sauce. the pea tips in garlic were cooked well, though a few tough stems could've been removed. the green beans, modified to accommodate the vegans, were decent, but i missed the minced pork and dried shrimp. other vegan dishes included fried rice with vegetables, no egg, though we were curious if they used chicken stock. we also had bok choy, snap peas, tofu, and mushrooms in a brown sauce that turned out to be oyster sauce. some say that's okay for vegans since oysters don't have a central nervous system. the chicken chow mein with crispy noodles and mushrooms was another non vegan dish, but i was disappointed to find button or white mushrooms instead of shiitake. the portions were generous, and the food came out quickly. we had a lot of leftovers. we were comped dessert and given a choice of red bean soup or mango pudding. they also had a robot delivering birthday cakes and singing happy birthday to a few tables, which added some fun to the experience. overall, it was a pleasant meal with good service, and free parking is available.

After eating 1/2 the tray this was what Lobster with Yee Mein that remained
    Eunice L.

We usually order takeout of their Lobster green onion with ginger sauce adding the extra cost for Yee mein noodles. They are on Uber and their BOGO offers for other dishes are combinable with a coupon so it's not bad. Food is decent but getting pricier but where isn't it like that these days? Not on this particular order but on a previous order they threw in a couple of almond cookies as a thank you for ordering so much - that was appreciated!

A very disappointing dining experience. The servers were indifferent, even rude. I don't know what they were going through, but it's hard to call this kind of attitude 'service.' My friend and I will not be returning.

Ginger beef, Budha's feast, Honey garlic spareribs, Chinese broccoli in garlic sauce

Yan's Garden was our to-go Chinese restaurant when we lived in the area. There was always a line up for dim sum during the weekends. The dim sum was good but was kinda pricey. Their ala carte menu was pretty good and have good portion. - Budha's feast: good mixed of vegetables and they put varieties of mushrooms. However, the sauce tasted a bit different recently - maybe they changed cooks (?) - Ginger beef: hubby's favorite! Deep fried beef stripes with sweet & sour sauce. Depends on the cooks, sometimes the beef pieces were cooked perfectly & tender and other time, it was overcooked & tough. - Honey garlic spare ribs: deep fried spare ribs were tender and crispy. The honey garlic sauce was sweet & delicious. - Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce: the Chinese broccoli was cooked perfectly - not to soggy & have perfect crunch The food was kinda inconsistent but overall, 3.5 stars for the taste, portion & price

I had the Deep Fried Bean Cured with Shrimp and Veggies. Also the Steamed Tendon in Special Sauce. With a bowl of steamed rice, I was quite satisfied. What's not to like? The two entrees were a contrast in textures that are pleasing. A rich sauce coated the tendons and the plump shrimp pieces snuggled nicely inside the crispy bean curd packets. For the next Hoedown, I need to bring some compadres so we can order more - fiesta style.

Yan's Garden was chosen to celebrate another birthday lunch in Mom's honour. We were a foursome this time, with both son and daughter joining us. It was fun getting back back to Yan's - we have always enjoyed our dining experiences there. And with something special to celebrate this time, it was even more fun and enjoyable. Food items were ordered directly from the food cart table service, and directly to the kitchen via both sides of the dim sum menu (regular, and specialty dim sum, with some of the latter served/priced as lunch specials). Service: upon arrival, and to our table, was especially warm, friendly, and cordial. Food: well-prepared - with both some familiar preparations and tastes, and some new-to-us ones. Everything on-the-mark - big in both flavour and taste. Photos attached - with some descriptions. We all enjoyed the dining experience, and shared a fine time together. Mom was especially thrilled and touched by the whole event. Our thanks to staff for gifting the mango pudding to her, in honour of her day - she loved it!!

Dim Sum @yansgardenca The dim sum tastes OK here. They have a jiejie (auntie) rolling around the food cart of the daily special dim sum items. This is a very memorable childhood dim sum experience. We have.. Steamed Fish Maw Stuffed with Shrimp Paste Love the tenderness of this dim sum and the fish maw absorbed all the sauces. Taste: 4/5 Steamed Rice Flour Rolls with Chinese Donut It's not hot served when we have it. Taste: 3/5 Deep Fried Eggplant with Shrimp Paste It's crispy outside and soft tender inside. Taste: 3.5/5 Steamed Scollops with Tobiko Dumplings It tastes good but the dumpling skin fall apart. Taste: 3.5/5 Deep Fried Prawn Dumplings They are crispy delicious and you can dip it with a sour sauce. Rusty nail found in my congee.

Ordered their lean pork and century egg congee to go around 8pm on Monday, Sept 11, 2023. Picked up my order, went back home, and started to chow down on my late dinner. When I was close to finishing the meal, I FOUND A RUSTY NAIL AT THE BOTTOM. Not even kidding. I thought it was a piece of bone at first, and the whole nail was in mouth before I spat it out and saw what it was. I am absolutely horrified, disgusted, and sick to my stomach now as I am typing this. I like their food and have ordered from Yan's many times, but this is completely unacceptable. Went back the next day on Tuesday, Sept 12, around 7pm to complain and let them know what happened, but I was not impressed with the way they handled it. Had to ask the guy at the till multiple times for their manager before he reluctantly called him over. He kept saying that the manager was busy and repeatedly asked me what I wanted from them, even after I explained that I found a literal RUSTY NAIL in my food. There was no sense of remorse or concern about the entire incident, which makes me wonder how often this happens at their restaurant. It is one thing to find a piece of hair or even insects in your food. But a freaking nail?! What is happening in their kitchen??? When the manager finally came over, he asked me to send him the photos so he could address this with their chef. I was glad to hear that, but he too kept asking me what I wanted from this. I said compensation would be nice but it is not the reason I am here. I wanted them to take this seriously, find out what happened, and put it right. The manager offered to compensate me with a free bowl of congee at first, which was laughable. They ended up returning what I paid for yesterday's horrid meal, but I am still concerned about whether they will take this seriously. Left my contact information so they can update me on what happened and how they resolved it. Will give them a week to follow up and post an update so you guys can decide if this is a restaurant you want to dine at. Honestly, I am not surprised by the lack of customer service since it is typical of Chinese restaurants. But their dismissive attitude despite the fact that they served a freaking nail in their food is extremely concerning. I may never dine here again as much as I like their food. Since last night, my mind has been racing with all the possible diseases I might contract because of this, and all the chemicals, bacteria, and germs that I have ingested. I know it was an accident, but I am so disgusted.

    Meh. Flavorless.
    Marty M.

Fairly bland. I myself wouldn't get it again. The beef was slimy and chewy. The rice, almond chicken and beef broccoli all had zero flavour. Luckily I had a ton of soy sauce at home to drown it in.

Just wish they gave bigger cups. Food comes out in a hurry. The menu is short and sweet: noodles, rice meals, appetizers, wontons and drinks. Trip #1 First visit was on a late Wednesday evening (around 8:30pm). - Mama's unique special milk tea ($4.80) - we added grass jelly ($0.50) which was unfortunately from a can. The milk tea was different than the norm as there was sweet fermented rice bits mixed in. Decent but don't think we'd get it again. - Sour and spicy crystal noodle ($6.98) - glass noodles with minced pork, bean sprouts, cilantro and peanuts. We got our dish medium spicy which was mild. Broth was excellently balanced; loved the sour notes. Glass noodles had a satisfying bite and cilantro added freshness to the bowl. - House special escargot rice noodles in spicy noodles ($13.98) - escargot, pig ear, beef, tofu, marinated egg, shrimp and pork intestine. There was also pickled green beans, bamboo shoots, tofu skins, wood ear mushrooms and peanuts. Really different with a good variety of textures and flavour. Loved all the types of meat, especially the tender beef, pork intestine and pig ear. Escargot was tasty but we wanted more. The tofu skin and wood ear mushrooms underneath were excellent. - Fresh meat wonton ($5.98) - this comes in a light broth with 15 homemade wontons, pickled seaweed and baby dried shrimp. Broth is basic but the wontons are great. Trip #2 Second trip was on a Friday evening (around 8:00pm). - Braised beef, pig ear and tofu ($10.98) - the beef is the same as what you get in their noodle bowls. Pig ear wasn't crunchy but the sauce (some sort of Chinese mushroom) was good. Tofu was fairly standard. For the price, it's a small dish; I didn't think it was worth it. - Shredded chicken, vegetable and cold noodle with house sauce ($9.53) - they asked us how spicy we wanted it; we went with spicy. Again, it's not so don't worry. The noodles were thin and the sauce was almost like a dan dan mein. We liked how it wasn't overwhelmingly peanuty. - Beef and escargot rice noodle in spicy soup ($9.98) - the beef is super tender. Again, the escargots are hard to find but everything else in this bowl is delicious. Tofu skin, wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, peanuts and pickled green beans. Satisfying and spiciness finally came through. An interesting twist to the usual Northern Chinese spots typically found in town. Cash or debit only.

They tend to stick together and aren't very to-go friendly. #14 is the star here, and it's absolutely worth coming back for.
