I always have a great dining experience at this Japanese/Taiwanese fusion hot pot spot. The booths are comfy and service is excellent. The servers explain how the combos work and they're constantly topping off our broths. Their combos include a soup base, main course, side, assorted veggies, Gokudo sauce, beverage and dessert. Soup: Their sukiyaki soup base is light with umami flavour and comes with a raw egg. This is a popular choice but my fave is their mushroom truffle broth. Main: my husband and I shared their AAA prime rib & lamb shoulder, both were delicious. Side: choose between rice or noodles, we upgraded to instant noodles. We monitored the waitlist and joined it so that we would be seated around 9PM (that's when HH started). The service was good and our server was very attentive. The taste is really just the broth (I always get the Chinese herbal soup) and it was good and flavourful in the beginning, but of course after cooking some proteins and veggies in it, it does change the flavour. My friend and I tried to go to one of the Kingsway Big Way locations but the line ups for both were too long so she suggested walking over to Gokudo Shabu Shabu. The new location is much larger than I expected and we were immediately greeted and seated without a wait. My friend suggested the combo to get a little bit of everything so I went with the 2 kinds mixed meat combo - the blade eye beef and lamb. For $33 the combo comes with the meat, original chicken broth, udon, assorted vegetable basket, house sauce, and the drink of the day (lychee green tea). The meat was of high quality and the house sauce was decent but I did find myself craving for more of a flavourful broth and/more sauces. The portion sized was decent but for a big eater, probably not enough. Decent spot but I still prefer a spot like Happy Lamb hot pot or DolarShop around the same neighbourhood. read more

It so happened that this restaurant is located in the base of the Element Vancouver, making our travel to dinner one Saturday night to be trivial in the most literal sense of the term. I had never tried hot pot before, as opposed to many of the other reviewers, but hey, life is short so you have to try things while you can. And all I can say is day-um, was there a lot of yummy fish to consume! One of the few times this boy was unable to complete his dinner, and certainly this was because there was so much of it. Maybe expand the beer selection a little bit? But that's a small thing - vibe was contagious, waitresses were friendly, and all-in-all it wasn't too expensive. We were struggling to find a place to eat and this came up on Yelp and seemed promising. It was cold and soup sounded perfect. It was a late lunch so there wasn't a wait. The place did fill up eventually. You are able to join the Yelp waitlist which is a feature I always enjoy. I did the hot pot combo which includes house special chicken soup (you can sub this out for an extra charge for any of their other soups), any of the meat combos, a choice of rice, vermicelli, or udon, a drink, and assorted veggie platter. I subbed my broth for the laksa, chose vermicelli, and unsweetened green tea. The laksa broth was perfect. It was the right amount of creamy and spicy. The veggies included cabbage, tomato, corn, kabocha, tofu, mushrooms, and fish balls. For my protein, I chose the mixed balls and meat combo with beef. The portion was huge! They gave a big variety of fish balls. The meat was fatty without being too much. The combo also included dessert at the end which was ice cream. We got a choice of vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry. Mid size shabu shabu/personal size hotpot restaurant on Kingsway near Metrotown. Pretty busy on a Sunday night, and we had to wait 15 min for a table for 4. Simple, bright interior. The menu is both sides of one laminated sheet. You can order stuff a la cart, but they have the combos to simplify things. For the combo, you pick the soup base, starch, main protein, and drink. I got the Japanese curry soup base with fatty beef and udon noodle, and the daily drink was a lychee drink. Everybody gets their own pot and induction cooktop on the table to heat things up, and a small bowl of premixed dipping sauce. In addition to the stuff you pick, the combo also includes a bowl with various veggies, meat/fish balls, and one shrimp. The fatty beef combo was $33 (before tax and tip), and it's a pretty sizable list of ingredients. Decent sized tray of sliced beef, and the quality was good. Came here after the snow day and definitely appreciated the individual hot pot! I love how they have toddler plate and utensils for the little, too! It is easy to use the waiting list function on Yelp and the servers are nice. There are many sets to choose from and each set comes with the base broth, meat option, various veggies and sides, choice of noodles, choice for drink, and ice cream! I went with a group of three back in August to celebrate my fiancée's birthday while on vacation. We came around 6pm without a reservation on Sunday night and were seated immediately. The menu is pretty expansive and there a lot of different meat or seafood options to choose from. Most items come with the combo which includes a base soup, rice/noodles, veggie platter, and a drink. It can add up quickly if you want multiple meats or an upgraded soup base. The portions here are decent, the veggie platter has a good amount of different items. We ended up getting a seafood combo, a beef combo, and a two kinds of meat combo. We also tried a couple different kinds of broth. Everything was just average for us, we didn't feel like the broths or the meat/seafood really stuck out. The drinks were just okay as well. One big downside for us is that the sauce is premade and very standard. I would categorize the food as being more like Chinese hotpot than Japanese shabu shabu because the assortment of broths and the sauce was a generic Chinese mix of hoisin/oyster/shacha/etc. Usually, shabu shabu restaurants serve ponzu and sesame sauce with the hotpot and Chinese hotpot tends to come with a sauce bar of many different ingredients. We were disappointed in the lack of sauce bar because usually you can compliment your soup base to a specific type of sauce. Overall, we weren't that impressed with Gokudo Shabu Shabu. We came from the states and thought that Vancouver hotpot would be much better. However, it was one of the more disappointing meals of our trip. Also, we took the metro over to the Burnaby area for our dinner and were surprised everything closes super early on a Sunday night. With so many hot pot options in the Burnaby area, this place feels fairly mediocre in comparison. The only notable positive is that they offer discounts on weeknights before 6 pm (if my memory serves me right). Finally got a chance to visit them after they relocated across crystal mall, and the interior was soo much more big and spacious than I had imagined! Got a fatty beef combo with their original broth and it was delicious! Loved how it came with a drink, rice, and an ice cream at the end of the meal! The service was also great and they constantly refilled our pots so that we had enough broth to keep going! With this currently Gokudo Shabu Shabu-Burnaby location, they will be relocating to #103-4501 Kingsway, right across the street from Crystal Mall. My husband and I dined at this older location (4501 Kingsway Unit) back in December when we visited Vancouver. It was a pretty cold night and so we decided to have hot pot for dinner. We came on a Tuesday night around 6 pm. Unfortunately there was a wait for a table. We ended up waiting about 30 minutes (we did give the employee who checked us in our phone number and was told they will text us when a table is available but we just ended up waiting inside the restaurant because of how cold it was outside and it was also raining too). We got a nice table that can sit 4 people, although it was just for us 2. After looking over the menu, we ended up purchasing: Seafood and Meat Combo, $33 prior to tax- My husband picked lamb as his meat choice. Each meal ordered comes with tea (choice of milk tea, winter melon, green tea and unsweetened green tea) with unlimited refills. Please note that any of the drinks chosen, the sweetness level cannot be adjusted (but of course the unsweetened green tea is well unsweetened). This was a pretty large amount of food with another plate of vegetables (napa cabbage, carrots, corn, bean sprouts, mushrooms, lotus root, tomato), some meat balls, one large shrimp, tofu. Please note that they do have a vegetarian version if you do not eat shrimp. This meal also comes with a side of rice, udon or vermicelli (with unlimited refills, but it did take some time for my husband to get a 2nd bowl of steamed rice). My husband enjoyed the assorted seafood and the meat. He was pretty filled. Mix Balls & Meat Combo, $28 prior to tax- I picked chicken as my meat choice. I picked milk tea for my choice of drink but did add some hot water to it to help dilute the amount of sweetness in the tea. I really love fish balls and so I decided to get this choice, which also had lobster balls and meat balls. Each of the ones I had were very flavorful. The chicken was also good. I was feeling a bit too full so I ended up cooking up the rest of my meat and took my broth to go (so did my husband) and then added noodles to it at our vacation rental for a 2nd meal. My husband and I did not pay extra for a flavored broth, we just added the onions/ chives and garlic to the broth, in addition to the sauces to help flavor up the broth, which turned out to be very good. ---------------------------------- (Total= $64.05 after tax, prior to tip) Service was friendly but wished it was a little bit more attentive. We happened to just pass by on our way to CHICHA San Chen, but we're so glad we stopped here for lunch! Their hotpot combo is so filling, that my husband and I didn't even end up eating dinner that day, haha! If you do the hotpot combo, only the house special chicken soup or vegetarian mushroom soup is included, but they have sooo many soup bases to choose from if you wanted to try something else (for an additional charge)! The combo also comes with your choice of rice/vermicelli/udon, a drink (drink of the day/unsweetened green tea), and an assorted veggie platter. When we went, the drink of the day was a passionfruit green tea, which was sooo good! Super refreshing, and not too sweet, and went well with the hot and savory hot pot! For the veggie platter, I remember lettuce, cabbage, pumpkin, tofu, fish ball, beef ball, baby corn, enoki mushrooms, and quail egg, but I'm probably missing a few things. They're not generous portions, but rather one of each so you can try different things/have some variety. If you specifically like a certain veggie/side, I would order additional. My husband and I both got the blade eye slice for our combos, and the meat seemed to be good quality, and it was a decent sized portion. As an add-on, I wanted to try the fish ball with roe (usually my favorite at hot pot!), but wherever they sourced it from wasn't good. Not sure if it was because it was super frozen or just not a good brand, but the filling/roe was pretty flavorless. Overall, we had a great experience here. The hotpot combo was more than enough to fill our stomachs for the rest of the day, and all the servers here were super kind and friendly. Gokudo's one of those restaurants that I will return to, but it's not a top choice for me. They're not the best, but also not the worse in terms of hot pot. I do love going for their happy hour (after 9pm) for 10% off. I usually get a signature meat slice and make it a combo for $5.99, and that really fills me up. Meat quality is not the absolute best and I've definitely ordered one type of meat that was even worse than mediocre (was tough and super hard to chew, pretty sure it was the sirloin slice). You'd be better off getting the fattier cuts of meat! The combo is the most worth item on the menu! It's great that it comes with various assorted items and free refills on the drinks. My favourite is definitely the wintermelon juice which acts to cut out some of the saltiness and oil from the ingredients. Definitely a solid choice for a dinner pick. This used to be my go-to individual hotpot restaurant in Burnaby when going out with friends. The menu options are vast and there was always something that appealed to everyone we brought. We would often get the combo set with whichever protein we fancied that day and enjoyed the great value and variety it offered. However, at some point post-COVID, they moved to a new location, and it was at that point that things went downhill from my perspective. Portions are smaller on the combo, not just meat but veggies too. You'd think they want you to fill up on cheap carbs and cabbage, but instead, I left still hungry the last time I visited. At the same time, prices are higher. I dont recall what we used to pay, but our bill for 5 people came to about 25% more than the last time, for essentially the same set of dishes. We also encountered some cleanliness issues, and so haven't been back since. Last time we were there, a spider rappelled down from the ceiling and suspended there about eye-level, right above one of our friend's soup. Staff needed to be asked a few times to bring us some extra napkins to deal with it. They didn't bring napkins, instead just squashed the spider where it hung and just walked away. A few of the sets also had cabbage that didn't appear to be washed. Our friend understandably lost his appetite and didn't feel like eating much after that, so we paid and left shortly after. read more

Really lovely experience at Gokudo Shabu Shabu! The lineup was super long (1.5 hour wait) but we decided to just go to walk around Metrotown to kill time. No reservations, so just leave your name in front and they'll add you to yelp waitlist. As for the food, it as really yummy! Individual style hot pot. Great place when it comes to Hot Pot! I personally like the fact that each person gets their own bowl here. Food is good, especially on a cold day and after waiting in the long lines which solidifies the legitimacy of this place! I will say, the spiciness for me on the spicy option was a bit too hot for my liking, but it was still good nonetheless. They were able to pour in some regular broth in my bowl to dilute a little bit of the spiciness. Restrooms are clean, parking is all street parking, which can be rather difficult to come by on such a major street. read more

Really disappointed by this restaurant for its priority to act as a business and not put their customers' best interest ahead. The last few weeks have been extremely cold for Vancouver, dipping well below what we're all used to. The restaurant has two tables that are seated extremely close to the door, with groups coming in and out frequently. My group was seated at the table closest to the windows and door. Recognizing the nature of the cuisine, it's expected to have a strong ventilation system installed. However, that day was cold and the restaurant wasn't set up to retain heat. Our table and the table next to us all kept our jackets on because it was so cold. When I asked the waitress to lower the blinds to block the heat that was escaping via the giant windows, I was told the business was still open and lowering the blinds would give off the wrong signal for people externally. Keep in mind it was 1 hour before closing on a weeknight. This was frustrating for someone who came to hot pot to try to warm up but had to wear their jacket the entire duration. This is my go-to spot for clean hot pot with the assurance that I won't leave with a stomach ache. I love that the meat quality and cleanliness at this restaurant is top notch and their soup base is delicious without the overpowering MSG / saltiness that you get at other hotpot resstaraunts. I never feel overly thirsty after eating hotpot here. Their new location is quite spacious! PRO-TIP 1: You can add your name to the wait list on Yelp and see when you're next in line to avoid having to go wait in person (especially during weekend evenings). PRO-TIP 2: After 9 pm, they take 10% off your bill and unlimited drinks (non-alc)! Recommended Soup Base: My favourite are the Tom Yum and Pumpkin soup base. I enjoy the mild spice, which gives enough spicy flavour but not enough to make it an uncomfortable experience. Recommended Dishes: I always get the combo (worth it with the variety of veggies and fishballs that you get!). My go-to meat is the fatty short plate (beef) or lamb shoulder slice (7 oz.). While their basic meats are already really good quality, I've also tried the AAA Prime Rib slice which is a cut above, more tender, fattier and melt in your mouth. I found this restaurant while looking for a Shabu Shabu place. They had good review and people waiting, both a good sign. Since I live about 30 mins away, I would get on Yelp and get on the waiting list. So far it seems perfect timing both times I went. I like their style of hot pot where the emphasis is on the beef. I have tried their sukiyaki style pot with shitake mushrooms and a soy based soup/sauce as well as their standard soup (chicken I think) Both are good. But I like sukiyaki style with a raw egg. They also give you a nice sauce for dipping. We order the short rib meat which is marbled and really nice. The standard combo comes with veggies, a quail egg and prawn. This last time I ordered the same this again but the meat was in smaller pieces and did not look like previous visit. A server who looked senior and asked if everything was ok. I told her the meat did not look like the previous visit. She understood and told me the meat might be an end cut. She asked if so would I like to get a few more pieces to cover the small once's.
