Yesterday I took a chainsaw that had problem starting to the store. Immediately, I was told what was wrong. My worker had asked me to buy another machine but this one is just as good as a brand new one after we learned how to use it. Comparing with spending $25 an hour for my worker to try to figure out what was wrong, this store is super quick in problem solving, very knowledgable, reliable and reasonable for the charge. I bought a Stihl Chain Saw from Steve in the early 1980s. His prices seemed much better than other dealers I had visited. Since then I have bought several pieces of equipment from him. He knows small engines and specifically Stihl Chain equipment very well. Recently I made the mistake of visiting another dealer nearer my home in search of a simple screw. This dealer did not have this muffler screw for my arborist saw. After waiting 2 weeks for the part to be ordered, and received it was not the correct part. I visited Steve and of course he had the correct Stihl part. We both noticed that the muffler had elongated screw holes so I bought a new muffler, which was also in stock. I went here for authorized service for Troy-Bilt and the guy was an absolute jerk. He didn't even want to look at the issue I was having and told me to contact Troy-Bilt. Guess where I'm never coming to again? A small dingy little shack with a dude and an attitude. It's no wonder they lost their big yard on El Camino and now operate out of a little hole in the wall. Being female seems to underestimate my knowledge and the guy that's always there seems to think this. When I ask for a part and needs it's obvious instructions like putting on the bolt I'll ask for that stupid question to be announced Being too helpful MAYBE .... but I just feel it's a man's world only in that shop. I took my concrete grinder to get service , the mechanic took a look at it he said he would do it. I waited a week and I called the guy , he said he was busy he couldn't do it. After another week he said he was waiting for the parts. I went there the third week, he said the engine was broken and I needed to replace it, he never did anything an he even charged me for a diagnostic that was wrong because my grinder is in great shape, it only needed a tune up. read more

I own a small tree service in and Around Palo Alto. Since around 1985 I have bought my chains saws, blowers, and other tools from Steve at Yardbird. He has always been very knowledgeable and ready to help with any machine problem. He keeps a complete inventory of parts and supplies. Many times he has rushed through a repair so a job of mine could go forward. Anyone in a business like mine needs to support merchants like Steve and Yardbird and not buy at Home Depot or Lowe's and such stores since they do not give the kind of support and personal attention we often need. They have a wide range of quality lawn and garden equipment for sale and will supply you with the machine you need without trying to sell you the top of the line just to make a bigger profit. Went here today with my husband and his broken power washer. I know nothing about yard equipment. However, I do know hard working, honest and knowledgeable service. I was so impressed with the men that helped us. They have extensive knowledge and genuine interest in machinery. Even my father would have enjoyed picking these workers brains. I would definitely recommend this place to the skilled everyday user of yard equipment. I have dealt with this business for many years. They are always helpful and know how to fix up my power equipment. If you are just looking for a cheap chain saw or lawnmower, you might get it cheaper somewhere else (actually, I did not bother to compare prices, I bought my equipment at Yard Birds because I figured I would need help later, and that was true). But after you have been using power equipment for a while, a big chain store probably does not have the facilities to fix it or keep it running well. If you need a large, pro quality chain saw (Husky), this would be a good place to get it. One of the few places around that can sharpen a chain saw. Take off the chain, bring it in, they can get it back in a couple of days while you are using your spare chain. read more

I took a Stihl weed eater in with a a fuel delivery problem. After two weeks of waiting I called for an update. They said it was a carburetor problem and they would have to order a new carb. Two weeks went by and I called again. It was finally ready. I was surprised that the bill was much less then expected. The engine ran great and was better then when it was new. Slow, but an excellent repair. I was impressed with the inventory and pricing on their equipment and repairs. I will be back for service and to purchase equipment. read more

Owner a total jerk. I bought a new Stihl small gas chain saw. I've used Stihl, Poulan, Craftsman, and other chain saws for 30 years. This new saw wouldn't cut a 4" Cherry tree at the base. I took it back thinking that I had a bad chain or other problem. The owner said, "It's not a rototiller"--inferring that I hit the dirt with the chain. I said I did not. I asked that he fix the saw or refund my money. He became visibly upset. He said, "If you touch the dirt you can dull the chain instantly." I didn't hit the dirt--but I also disagree. I've accidentally cut through barb wire, nails, rocks embedded in trees, etc... in the past. It still takes time to dull a blade. I've never had an issue with a new saw with a dull blade not cutting. This guy grabbed the saw, went in the back, sharpened the chain (I didn't ask him to) and then said, "Come with me." We went out back and he started the saw, full throttle, and then started cutting big tree stumps like a mad man. I agree that the saw blade was dull. Not from me after 3 minutes of trying to cut a small tree with a new saw. This guy kept cutting until I took the saw from him and walked out the store. A new saw should never be broken in that way--it can damage the seating of internal components. Three weeks later I received a court summons. I was being sued by Yardbird Equipment in small claims court for $1200 dollars. The saw cost $220. In court the owner said the reason the suit was for $1200 was for his time showing me how to use a chain saw. The court awarded him $20 for sharpening the chain. He paid $25 to file the claim and $150 to have a court designee deliver it to me. Do you really want to buy a product from someone like this? If he had conducted a civil conversation we could have worked out something. Guess where I didn't buy my Stihl electric blower and gas weed whip? read more

I have been getting my chain saw blades sharpened there for 20 years, They have the highest quality chain saw blades, tools and service. Since they repair tools they can tell you which tools have the fewest problems. read more

These guys fixed a stihl chainsaw carb problem and when we got the saw back it was badly leaking bar oil. Before even trying to start it my wife took it down to be looked at. The person who she spoke to was RUDE and very disrepectful. He would not even touch the saw, look at it, or offer to do anything unless we paid. We will never give these guys any more business and I have related this abysmal customer service to my friends.Too bad ... your loss. read more

I went in looking for parts for my gas weed trimmer. The gentlemen took the time to evaluate what parts I needed and give brief advice on what I'd need to do to fix it. (I'm a mechanic). As he was collecting the parts, I asked about electric weed trimmers as compared to gas. Turns out there are different levels of power in the gas models and the electric one I was looking at was actually more powerful than the cheap gas one I had brought in for parts. I was a little skeptical, but decided to take a chance as I'd prefer to run a long extension cord rather than deal with the gas mess, noise and vibration of the 2-stroke gas engine. I got the Stihl electric trimmer home and immediately started work on the tall grass on my patio. Sure enough, he was right. Way better than my cheap gas weed trimmer! I got great advice, a quality product and excellent customer service. I checked the price vs online shopping and it was within $8, actually a better deal since I didn't have to pay shipping or wait for it to arrive. I'm happy to support this business and can recommend this business highly. read more

The customer service here is horrible. The person who runs this place acts like customers are a pain and cause him too much trouble. I left a piece of equipment to be worked on, and called every day for 4 days to find out the status, only to be told it hadn't been done. Finally on the fourth day I asked when it would be ready, only to be told he was too busy to do it, had too many phone calls and other customers to deal with. So that meant that everyone who came in after I did apparently had a priority. I will NEVER go here again. You can tell by the disarray of this place that the guy is out of control. read more
