Hi Yelp. Tried to support a small business. Mistake. Hope they don't get upset, waste half my work day, get mad over nothing, melt down, and break my car (again). *shrug* Never trust mechanics who refuse to explain their work. The only things they respect less than their profession are their customers. There's a reason a nearby spot told me they stopped giving Yeargan's the time of day. They act like guilty pre-teens who got caught cheating on a test if you ask them something. Dig other reviews here. There's a pattern. Short: Something went funny with my car when it was serviced. Their attitude during follow-up was "Yeah? Drink bleach." Then came the theatrics. Paid $200 to watch some guy freak out and wag the dog. Issue left unaddressed. Long: Got something done. Cool. They noted several issues, but I was already handling those through insurance (was waiting on two checks). Paid, drove home. Lightly touched a door handle. Couldn't get out. Hadn't touched it since leaving the car with them. Cable busted under their watch. Yeargan's lost it when I tried to discuss it the next week. Everything fine on voicemail, but when I went in, it was "$800 for this mysterious issue we *totally* did not cause, jerk!" Owner(?) came unglued and grew cartoonishly condescending when I pointed out they were the last people to use the door, and that I knew how cables break due to my job. You're a tech, sure, but I didn't toss my engineering experience when I walked inside. Yeargan's dived into desperate, scammy evasiveness. They didn't clarify the issue, explain policy, or introduce me to who worked on it. "We got out of it a bunch of times" was pretty much it. Didn't buy the glib take. Suddenly, they were aristocrats, acting like I dropped cash, left, trashed my door, and then sucked up their precious internet browsing time with my unwashed problems. The Nick Cage House of Reactionary Auto Repair and Trying to Scare 20-Year-Olds. Could've said, "Here's what we saw." Instead, Yeargan's demanded nearly a grand for a basic repair, which wasn't needed before I visited, and went full rage-clown. Embarrassing. Worked when I dropped it off, and you used it last... as you said ... so... Discount Occam's Razor for a second. The narrative would read, "Nah, some linebacker Conan'ing this handle around didn't bust it; the disabled person with a bum hand severed this threaded cable, yet didn't hear anything in a silent environment. Or micro-sized ninjas did it. Or Bigfoot. Anyway, we want $800 for this menial job." Sniff test: Failed. Where there's smoke, there's fire. Plausible deniability? Okay, but if you're certain? Explain it. I paid for expertise, yes? You already took the green. Back it up. Instead, Yeargan's showed no confidence in their work and threw a self-incriminating, huff-and-puff fit. Removed all doubt. Corpse at their feet, blood on their clothes, knives in their hands, screaming "We didn't do it!" but... uh... Hit dog will holler. After watching him deflect, I quit speaking with the huffy guy. He then started jumping into my conversation with another person to tell me what was what. Asked for an evidence-based explanation? Nada. Left to his own devices? "Power move Pete." Smartest cat alive, muttering to himself and tagging every other sentence with angry platitudes. A business model based on acting like a gym coach in a bad 1983 comedy. What's "overcompensation"? Hit dog will holler. Hurt their feelings when I responded to their 758th automated text with "You owe me a new door handle!" Boo-hoo. They wasted tons of my time, and a quick DIY fix corrected their mistakes. Yeargan's whining to the pay-to-play joke that is the BBB, using selected de-contextualized recorded snippets (... creepy... ) about how they *weren't* prickly, hostile, or unprofessional, was fun. "This customer ignored me while I repeatedly insulted him after he dared to ask basic questions! WE'RE TOTALLY *NOT* DEFENSIVE!!" A hyperventilating man with a bruised ego, barkin' and fartin' to distract attention from their team's negligence? Doesn't scan very "pro." End result? Door was still busted. Contrarian outbursts did not solve the issue. Watching employees roll their eyes at their boss and his sneering, bitter asides, most of which were factually wrong? That also didn't help. Door was still busted. Again: Hit dog will holler. When I returned to my regular shop, they immediately noted I didn't even need half the work they tried to push on me. They also told me they stopped recommending Yeargan's, and that something was "obviously going on over there." Tell me about it. People need their cars. They use them to earn a living and care for their loved ones. If your options are nothing or this place? Stick with nothing. Keep looking. Your money, safety, and time are worth something. Don't entrust your vehicle to Yeargan's. "Top notch" in the same sense that throwing trash at a wall makes you an "artist." read more

My tire was flat, apparently slow leak as it seemed fine when I left that morning. I drove it there because it was close. They told me $450 for new tire and installation. Then gave me a huge "complimentary" list of things I needed to fix. I didn't appreciate the upsell. They did put air in the tire, which I appreciate so I gave the 2 stars instead of 1. I drove it to Costco and had tire changed for $270. I get that it's more expensive in local garages than chains like Costco, and I probably would have paid an extra $100-but they lost my trust entirely with their laundry list of "things wrong with the vehicle" which was actually fine. Too bad. I like to support local as long as I don't feel taken advantage of. read more

Their mechanics are well trained and well paid. You will pay about $200 an hour in labor. If you have a difficult or special mechanical problem, it may be worth the money. I ended up paying these high labor costs just to change out fluids, which was way too much to pay for the work I needed. read more

My son took his car there after an attempted break in, to fix the door lock and handle that was broken. First quote was $294 to fix it. Car got dropped off, and after more looking, they came back with a quote for $900, saying there were a lot of parts broke that they were not able to see on the original estimate. Seemed pricey, but we wanted to get the car fixed. So....told them to go ahead with it. They then said there was damage to the door they didn't realize before, which had to be fixed. Now for a total cost of almost $1300. At that point the door was apart and sitting in the shop. I called the shop and talked to Bryan at that point, as I really felt they were taking advantage of my son who is just out of college. He explained what was going on, and I told him I needed to know that was the final price. Honestly mad at myself for not just taking the car back and taking it somewhere else, but we went ahead and they fixed it. It now works, but they did not key the lock to his old key, so now he has one key for driver's side, one for passenger side. Door has fob which works so generally don't need the key, but seems weird. They also tried to sell him a $112 oil change before he left, and told him they wouldn't drive the car anywhere without the oil change since there was no oil on the dipstick. My son knew better on that one and refused the oil change and will have that done elsewhere. They also told him he needed brake system flush. I'd say beware of their practices. They lost a customer for sure. Felt like they were more worried about how much money they could get out of us versus good customer service. Good customer service equals more customers and more money. I wish more places would realize that. read more

I am a big fan of Yeargan's and trust them. I am inherently skeptical of anything a mechanic tells me because I am a young girl and they typically assume I know nothing and thus can be easily manipulated into spending money. I have had zero issues with Yeargan's overcharging me for unnecessary work. They are on the pricier side for a local mechanic, but I think it's worth it. Times visited: 3 or 4. read more

We recently moved to NC far away from our trusted mechanic. Yeargan's was suggested for my 2006 Chevy Silverado. I could not be more pleased with the service and especially the estimate. Brought car in for a oil change and it was not changed..I even brought the oil and the filter!!for them so they would only have to do a state inspection... They stole my oil... stole my filter and the car caught on fire within 15 miles of leaving the business.. I would not trust yeargans to do anything at all to anything for any reason!! PERIOD!! to any vehicle unless you stood There and watched them...I am horribly disappointed (and pissed off) with these people as they destroyed my best and favorite car ... And the last thing I told him was how with the economy this was my best and only dependable transportation and it is imperative that this car keep me going ( driving back and forth to south Florida to take care of my mom ) I hope that the laws of karma keep the responsible party without until the end of time...I even ask 2 or 3 times are you sure you changed the oil the mechanic acted like it was a stupid question... anyway stand there and do not leave if you have to get anything done there... read more

came in to get my inspection they told me that they do a courtesy test of filters and fluids. Wasn't able to come here ended up going to Jiffy Lube to get my filters changed because of the picture this place showed me. Come to find out those filters looked nothing like the filters that were in my car. so if they tell you you need to get your filters changed and your transmission fluid changed and try to charge you 600 bucks. Get a second opinion because more than likely they are not truthful and who knows what else they're not truthful with. read more

Scam !! Went in for new spark plugs and a safety inspection and they came up with all kinds of things that didn't need to be done. Not to mention their ridiculously high prices (Seriously $400 for new transmission fluid that didn't need to be changed??) This is probably the WORST place to take your car. I'm gonna plant this right here.... just in case Yeargan's Top Notch Automotive, Carrboro, NC won't let it go to their FaceBook page. I posted it there a few mins ago #yearganstopnotchautomotive #yeargans I dropped my van off Thur 11/15/18 at 5:00 PM to have the hot/cold air blender and blower motor assessed. I received a call Fri 11/16 at about 3:30 PM telling me the vacuum lines in the dash were bad and had been replaced. He said the air blender was now working but still wasn't functioning properly because the dash control unit for the air blender was bad and needed to be replaced, as well as blower motor and circuitboard too. The owner told me it would be almost $800, and the work would be finished Mon afternoon. I gave the Ok to proceed. Monday afternoon at 4:10 PM I called the shop to check on my van. It went to VM and I left a message asking for someone to call me about my van. At 4:45 PM. I called again, and got VM, so I left another message asking for someone to call me before the shop closed at 5:00. I needed to pay for the work and get my van. I called again at 5:15 PM and got VM again. I didn't leave a message that time. Tuesday morning I called at 6:15 AM and asked that someone contact me when the shop opened so I could come get my van. At 8:35 AM I called again, and this time the owner answered. I asked what the situation was with my van. The owner told me that everything was done but he'd ordered the wrong circuitboard because he didn't know my van does not have an AC installed, at all. I told him I had three questions: 1- Did the person troubleshooting my air blender not see there wasn't an AC button anywhere on my dash? Didn't he or she notice there are no AC controls at all inside the van while he or she was fiddling with the buttons on the dash trying to get the blender to function? 2- Why hadn't anyone returned my calls about my van? It was supposed to be ready Monday afternoon and here it was Tues morning and I was having to call the shop to get info from them. 3- When would the new circuitboard be inhand and installed? The owner suddenly became offended because I 'was questioning their competency' because I asked if no one had noticed the AC thing. He told me they hadn't been working on my AC so they hadn't payed it any attention. My reply was, 'But someone had to be looking right at the dash as they tried to get the air temp to cycle from hot to cold.' He told me that they hadn't called me because, and I quote, 'I've been covered up like chicken $hit. I haven't had time to call you'. The owner then berated me for questioning the competency of his staff and told me to, and again I quote, 'Come get your van and get it off my damn property!', and then he hung up on me. Twenty-five mins later I was at his shop to get my van. It was completely together. As if it's never been apart. As it turns out nothing had been done to it. Nothing, at all. The dash control had not been replaced. The blower fan had not been replaced. The air blender issue was no different that it was when I left it with Yeargan's Thursday evening. I took my van and left the property. Later that afternoon my wife stopped by to pay for any work they'd done and parts they'd used. I did not want to be indebted to the shop. The owner told her we didn't owe him anything because they'd only diagnosed the van. For the life of me I doubt even that much happened. I'd already lost two and a half days of work because of Yeargan's. I believe I narrowly avoided being scammed out of $800 on top of that. Yeargan's was recommended to me by the folks who work on my other car. They know about this event now, as well. read more

Just finished my second big repair at Yeargan's since buying a 14 year old Honda Civic last year. After a bad experiences where I received out-right false information that I believe was meant to scare me into A LOT of unnecessary spending (or else they just don't know cars) from Al's Garage in Chapel Hill, I was happy to find a mechanic who is honest, very knowledgeable, and straight-forward. Before agreeing to any work on my car, I tripled checked Yeargan's suggestions for repairs and quotes, and they were always in line with advice from those I trust for auto advice. I'm no expert at car repairs, but I've had the following work done, and things seem to be working fine now: new timing belt (including timing belt tensioner, water pump, camshaft oil seal and sprocket), AC repairs, and replaced the muffler and tailpipe. Thank you Yeargan's! p.s. Some logistic information: Yeargan's is located behind Gourmet Kingdom, next to another auto repair shop (a bit confusing). If you need to drop your car off before 8am, there's a key drop box. And if you need to pick it up after 5pm you can pay with a credit card over the phone (sometimes they're around till 6pm too). I appreciate that they email a PDF of all the suggested repairs, plus cost of parts and labor separated out. This shop got our car in on the day of appointment, e-mailed us a full detailed estimate before proceeding with the work, and when it was time to pick the car up, there were zero surprises! I found a coupon for this place in a local booklet and thought, hurray! Cheaper oil change! I called last Thursday afternoon to ask if Yeargan's could squeeze me in for an afternoon oil change. They were all booked up, and the desk person -- I'm assuming Brian -- told me to call back the next morning (Friday) to get in on Friday afternoon. I dutifully called back the next morning. The same desk person's response? "You should've made an appointment yesterday for today!" I was frustrated and dubious about this place's service by that point, having never been offered the option of making an appointment, but the coupon was such a good deal that I thought, okay, one more chance. I asked about an appointment for Monday. The desk person told me to bring my car any time after 8am, took down my name and car information, including that my car needs synthetic oil, and we were done. I brought my car in about 12:45pm the following Monday (today). The desk person informed me that the mechanic was at lunch and wouldn't be able to service my car until 2pm. I asked, "If I bring it back at 2pm, will it be ready in time for me to get back to work nearby by 3pm?" He assured me that it would. I emphasized that I had a meeting at 3pm I needed to cover, and he told me it would be no problem. I brought my car back just before 2pm. The desk person took my key and I settled down to wait. At 2:37pm I got nervous and looked out at the parking lot: my car was still there, untouched. The other guy in the waiting room told me he'd gotten there just at 2pm, no appointment, and they'd taken his car for an oil change. I asked the desk person what was going on. He made hurried excuses and said my car would be done soon. Long past 3pm, going on 4pm, he at last confessed that they hadn't had the kind of synthetic oil my car takes on hand and had been forced to send someone out to get it. He also said, "If I'd known you were going to be waiting for the car, I would have scheduled you for an appointment early in the morning!" What he meant was, "If only I'd listened to you to begin with, this raging clusterfuck would have never happened!" Long story short: this business does NOT communicate well. What I saved in money I ended up having to spend in time, and I am not pleased at all that I went through the hassle of making an appointment only to have been cast to the side regardless. I will only seek out this place again if I receive another coupon for a cheap oil change... and if I have a whole day to spare to just leave my car there, since my time was clearly their lowest priority. read more

I can't recommend Brian and his team more highly. I have been going there for many years. I can fix most things that go wrong with my car and do all my own maintenance. When something is over my head or requires tools I just don't have they do the work promptly and professionally. I think he has come in under the estimated cost about half the time. Super super super disappointed in this place. I went to here thinking I'd be getting better service and quality than a corporate mechanic or dealership, plus I felt as though I'd be supporting local. I needed a new axel and shocks, which cost me about $1500. Expensive, but necessary and would have cost me the same anywhere else between labor + cost of parts. About a month after getting the axel + shock service done here, I had to get some an oil change and an inspection, and took it to the dealership I usually go to. Come to find out that the mechanic at Yeargan's whom installed my shocks and axel didn't install it correctly, and hammered the hell out of it to the point where it damaged my bearings. The dealership took a video fro me to show me and there were a part literally dangling from my car... WTF? I had no idea because I would have had to crawl under my car to see what was going on and my car wasn't making an distinct noises. To get it fixed at the dealership was going to cost me another $1000. I'm okay with mistakes, but why didn't the mechanic just tell me what had happened and then offer to fix it right away!? NO INTEGRITY whatsoever. Yeargans let me drive a car out of their business that had poorly installed axel and shocks (which is dangerous as hell) and then also damaged my bearings, also which is dangerous. They have a warranty but the part that bothers me is the fact that the mechanic knew they messed up my car and then let me drive it out of their business that way. And I'm sure as hell not going back to the mechanic that fucked up my car to begin with. Now I'm out $1500 in the middle of a pandemic and having to pay even more for a problem that would never have existed if it had just been done correctly to begin with. If you are an assertive woman, who asks questions-be prepared to be talked down to and disrespected. Between December of 2015 and April 2016, I have taken my car in for the same problem, 3 times. During my first visit, it was their suggestion that I replace 2 parts. We decided to try replacing one first to see if that would help, as it would be a cheaper route. When I took the car back in January for the same problem, you'd think they would maybe look into some other things that could be causing the replaced part to stop working again. Instead, they replaced the same part for a second time. Yesterday, the issue returned for the 3rd time. I called Yeargan's to ask where they were getting the part from, and they told me. I called the auto parts store and asked their opinion and if it was possible to wind up with 3 defective parts in a span of 4 months. The gentleman stated that by the time it was replaced the second time, he wasn't sure why they weren't looking into other possible causes to diagnose why this kept happening. I agreed. Yeargan's called to tell me I had to replace another part. I explained that there was some noise occurring, (as I did the 1st time I brought it to them). I was told that they looked over their notes and that I never mentioned a noise, and if I HAD, they would've checked the other part the second time I brought my car back. I asked, "So this is my fault?" The owner didn't like that. I expressed how I didn't understand why they didn't test other things, and decided to replace the same part a second time. The owner replied, "You can come get your car so I don't have to listen to your smart mouth anymore." I was mortified. After hanging up the phone, the owner proceeded to call my place of employment, and left a message saying, "This is Yeargan's Automotive. We are getting ready to leave for the day. If you want your car, I suggest you come pick it up. It's 2:45, come get your car." After receiving that message, I called him back to let him know I was on my way. Their business hours are 8AM-5PM, so that message was very alarming and felt a little threatening. I immediately went and got my car back. Throughout all of the back and forth with this business, there was never any understanding or apologies for the hassle/inconvenience. They simply did not care. The customer has no say. The owner is always right. And if you call him out on something or ask questions, he will treat you poorly. In addition to this terrible experience, I now have to go somewhere else to pay for a part and labor that is STILL under warranty with Yeargan's. I do not want to step foot in there ever again, or speak to the owner, so I am choosing to eat that money. Lastly, the other business that I am taking it to for repairing both parts is cheaper than Yeargan's. Maybe we were both having a bad day, but I'm pretty sure businesses shouldn't treat/talk to their customers this way. read more

They are fair and reasonable with their prices and work. Brian Yeargan will give you very hands on service. He will not overcharge you, and he will tell you when you don't need something. That is something I really appreciate. I do with they would start to accept cars before 8am because I have to get to work early. But all in all, they are a pretty good choice as you family mechanic. Yeargan's is a fantastic automotive shop. While they fixed my car I took a walk and they were kind enough to come fetch me because it's hard for me walk long distances, and they knew why. That was an unusual request however they were very kind and accommodating not to mention superb mechanics. You can't get more top notch than that! read more

I brought my car in for the rear rotor and pads to be replaced and spur of the moment, asked Brian about two other random things with the car. He made the time to check out and fix those two things, one being a temporary fix for my radio antenna that he was kind enough not to charge me for and the other was a hi beam headlight. I'm rocking out to all the stations now, crystal clear! Thank you for taking good care of my car, explaining the issues with my car in a matter of fact manner, and giving me exceptional customer service! read more

Will never go here again. Twenty year old truck wasn't running. Misdiagnosed and wanted $200 for a $60 distributor. Got a used one for $35. Expected to pay $113 for labor and nothing more. Never heard from them in four whole days. Truck was not present neither day. He got pissed because I didnt purchase his bs part he did extra work that i didnt ask for and he didn't notify me first. $362 went to $480. and I paid for a part I didnt need and truck still isnt working. So he basically charged me for his misdiagnosed and i paid for a part i didnt need. Taking "Top Notch" mechanic to court soon. Will keep you posted. I really don't know what work they did. 2 spark plugs for $45 and $200 for a distributor as if i needed racing equipment to take out garbage. read more

Oil plug fell out ten days after I had an oil change done here. These guys accused me of scamming them and they wouldn't put a new engine in my car. I wouldn't take my car here because chances are the work will be poorly done and you might lose an engine and therefore a good, reliable car. I have tons of friends that go to Auto Logic and they have never had a single complaint. Guess that was my mistake - I'm going there next time. YEARGAN'S VEHEMENTLY DENIED THAT THE OIL PLUG COULD FALL OUT TEN DAYS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. I can't say enough good things about Yeargan's. I have brought my 2002 Camry there for several repairs as well as routine maintenance and safety/smog inspections. The staff are always friendly, professional, speedy and above all, trustworthy. The price is always reasonable - less than what I have paid at Chapel Hill Tire and Auto Logic for MUCH better service. The usual process is as other reviews describe: drop your car in the morning, receive a detailed estimate by phone and email by lunchtime. Often, they finish the work the same day and I can grab my car on my way home. The staff are extremely patient and happy to explain all repairs, their rationale, when you need them, why you need them (or don't), what is a safety vs. maintenance issue, etc. (In contrast, I have found that other auto repair places in Carrboro/Chapel Hill are impatient with explaining the repairs and can be pretty patronizing in their treatment of customers). Example of the type of treatment you can expect here: Recently, I bought my Camry in for a check engine light. The car is old - 200k miles - and I was debating whether to do the repair, or sell the car as-is and purchase something newer. Bryan generously walked me through the pros and cons of each option, and ultimately helped me decide to get something newer, never pressuring me to do the repair (even though he'd make money if I did so). And, he didn't charge me for the diagnostic check on the check engine light -- something Chapel Hill Tire charges $100 for. Amazing! Above all, I so appreciate the openness and honesty from the staff. As another reviewer said, there are zero surprises. You're never upsold into a repair you may not want or need. Great service at a great price. I came in prepared to spend several hundreds of dollars on a minor issue. Bryan took a look and told me I didn't the work. I tried to pay him for his time, but he wasn't having it. Don't waste your time anywhere else. As long as I live in the triangle region, this is where I'm taking my car. Period. read more
