We called ahead to find out if pups were welcome and were told they were. We were welcomed in. We were offered a sample of their slushy while we chose our flight selections. We each did a flight of five from what was available. I had the "My Morning Coffee, a "semi-sweet" from the selections of meads. It really did not have any sweetness at all and was quite dry. I tried the Choke Cherry Wine, Feel Better Berry, Baco Noir and Cabernet. Choke Cherry was tart without sweet. Feel Better Berry was cloying. Baco Noir was dry as was the Cabernet, which had a slightly astringent undertone. The ambiance is much more casual than a typical winery tasting room. Flights are served in plastic cups written on in sharpie. We were regaled with stories of the tasting room cat bringing its various conquests back into the building for the owner to find. My husband and I visited Yellow Car in late April, 2024, and had a lovely time. We had been driving all day through a windstorm, tumbleweeds and all, and finding Country Car was a very welcoming break from the road. We each ordered a wine tasting, with five pours (1 oz each) from a wide selection of fruit wines and meads ($8 each), and then shared them in order to taste all ten! We enjoyed the wines, and especially the honey mead, and purchased an extra bottle (750 ml, $25) to take with us. Jim, the friendly proprietor, also gave us a taste of their wine slushees, and we ordered a plate of excellent, and fully loaded and reasonably priced, nachos. Yellow Car, and Cortez Colorado, is a convenient stop for tourists on route to Mesa Verde National Park, and even Arches which we had just visited. For any RVers out there, Yellow Car participates in the Harvest Hosts program, with reservation. read more

If you're cruising through Cortez, CO, make sure to stop by Yellow Car Country Wines--a charming and quirky little spot you can't miss with its bright yellow signs and even a yellow Beetle out front. We found Yellow Car thanks to the Harvest Host a program, which businesses welcomes RVers to stay overnight and check out their businesse. It's a better alternative to the Walmart parking lot. Living close to Fredericksburg, TX, the second most visited wine region in the US, we know wine but this place is entirely different. Don't expect a dry wine here! Upon arrival, we were greeted with a tasty wine slushy. We then moved on to a tasting, each of us choosing five pours (a lot of wine!), and we were definitely feeling the effects! While these wines aren't my usual style, we did find a couple of standouts: the Blueberry Hill and the Red Velvet, both delicious enough to take home. The owner Jim and his business partner, Susan, were very accommodating, making us feel right at home. We loved relaxing on the comfy sofa with Cabby, the cat, while sipping on these unique and sweet wines. It's a cozy, divey spot that's a lot of fun. We did try the nachos and zucchini sticks, which were okay, but if you're hungry, I'd recommend holding out for Wild Edge Brewery Collective for your meal. It's worth noting that Yellow Car doesn't engage with social media or reviews, which is a bit of a shame because they don't "mess with that stuff". Pointing out how nice their reviews were. Great Harvest Host destination. There were three RV's that overnighted all together. Yellow Cab gets a total of five stars in part due to the great overnight spot. read more

I went to Yellow Car Country Wines in Sept 2025 when I was in the Cortez area. Jean was a wonderful host and the service was impeccable. I loved everything so much, I went back the next day to try more of their wines and meads. I ended up going home with 14 bottles. Normally, I'm a lover of red, dry wines like Cabernet. There wasn't a fruit or grape wine I didn't love. Deep & Dark, Apple CInnamon, Lainey's Temptation (!!), Apricot Jalapeno, White Strawberry, Merry Orange Berry, Feel Better Berry, etc. etc. Plus the Honey Mead and My Morning Coffee! I could list the whole menu here. Needless to say, I'm going to make Cortez and Yellow Car a yearly tradition. read more

Jean took such great care of us and made sure we were warm and our cups were always full. They have a HUGE selection of wines that are all so delicious and fruitful. Jim is a great host, always available but never hovering. We moved to the area about 2 months ago but hadn't stopped by because we associated fruit wine with sweet wine. That is definitely not the case! There are so many options of mead and fruit wine from dry to sweet. There were 3 of us. We each got the tasting pours, so we shared and tried 15 of their offerings, along with the frozen wine slushies. The slushies were really tasty, particularly on a hot day. You can really taste the fruit in the wine - they don't add a bunch of sugar like you typically associate with fruit wines. We'll definitely be back and look forward to Jim's graciousness again. read more

This place ended up being such a lovely surprise! We randomly popped in 20 minutes before closing, and ended up staying for an hour and a half. The owner was wonderful. This winery is INCREDIBLE! I highly encourage you to give it a try if you're in the Cortez area. Family-run, you will get an incredibly warm welcome not to mention the wine is delicious! I recommend a flight so you can try a little bit of everything. My boyfriend and I loved the afternoon tea meade, tutti-frutti wine and apple cinnamon. Not to mention Jean and Jim (the owners) are so sweet and kind. You won't feel like you're at a traditional winery but rather someone's hike where you're a welcome guest. read more

Wine tasting with Jim and Jean is like visiting with cousins you haven't seen since childhood. This couple has a natural gift of hospitality, a shared passion for a small family business, and Jim's creative streak and wine science is producing some lovely wines. Word of advice: if you are stuck on grape wine, enter Yellow Car with an open mind. Jim has created multiple fruit wines that are pleasing drys and semi drys. Not sugared, just fermented apricots, pears, elderberry, & many more. They mash and prepare the fruit themselves. Their grape wines are pleasing but we quickly got over our grape snobbery with their impressive fruit wines. Jim was a hoot. He and his wife run the business out of their home. We were the only ones there the whole time. Might have been because it was Tuesday, but could have also been due to the current events of 2020. The wines were delicious, and they have a special going on now through the end of 2020, to do a tasting of 5 wines for $1. You can't find that anywhere else. They also have some red wines that were very good, even though their main thing is fruit wine. Would recommend to anyone who likes wine, good people and a beautiful view. read more
