I came to check out Yellow Submarine after i saw the little segment on the Food Network, and i am so glad i did. I go to school and live in philly so i've had a lot of different cheese steaks from a lot of different places around the area, and i'm sure i'll catch some heat for this, but I think Yellow Submarine is better than Pat's and Geno's (just using Pat's and Geno's since i'm sure a lot of philly natives have been there before). First off, the size of the cheese steak is huge! Yes, size matters (when it comes to food). They have to serve the thing on 3 paper plates. Second, the thing only costs $9,. Who can say no to that? Also, this place isnt a tourist trap like Pat's and Geno's. The downside? They close at like 10pm, so its not the best choice if you have the munchies after a late night of partying. If you ever get the chance, check this place out. Note: They have Whiz, but its not the same as the Pat's kind of whiz, and according to my friend it didnt taste as good, so keep that in mind when ordering. Personally, I prefer provolone. read more

This place was pretty fantastic. It's the epitome of blue collar eats, as it's a lot of good food at a reasonable price. The cheesesteaks range from reasonable to pretty darn substantial to "we're gonna need a bigger boat". My wife and I both had the cheesesteaks with a side of fries. I liked the provolone better, the wife said the wiz was better. I don't think we'll ever quite agree. If we hadn't gotten fries, the sandwiches wouldn't have been a problem, but there were two big potatoes or more worth of fries. Ordered three cheese steaks and 10 Parmesan Garlic Wings, cheese steaks were good I personally think rolls are a little too soft and for my taste were cut a little to far down the middle. These roll for steaks I think should only be cut half down, it make the steaks to want to fall out the bottom but roll were super fresh and sandwiches were pretty good by all how ordered them. So, yelp prefaces reviews about how we are in a pandemic and to keep that in mind with restaurant complications. Well, I wish that was my issue. Unfortunately, it's not. this place doesn't understand how to stay sanitary or how to wear masks appropriately. The cooks were either not wearing a mask or had in under their mouth. They also weren't wearing gloves. I'd rather not get covid again because a place handled my food without a mask and gloves. I have lived locally for 30+ years. I had driven by the yellow submarine 100x but failed to ever stop. Family and friends would ask if I ever ate there and I always said no. All that changed today when I finally pulled over and had lunch. I ordered a small cheesesteak with fried onions and an order of fries. The cheesesteak was larger then I expected. It had the appropriate amount of meat and cheese. It isn't like the sandwich was overly stuffed, but it was more then many pizza shops would do. I felt the roll was subpar...too soft for me. I prefer the hard outside roll. The portion of fries was outrageous. So many, I couldn't finish them. They did lack salt, so if you are eating on the run make sure to season them. They reopened the ice cream half of the building last year after being closed for many, many years. The ice cream side was surprisingly clean and well maintained. The girl working was very pleasant. This is a bit of a tough review for me. We moved to Maple Shade a little over 4 years ago, and live right around the corner from Yellow Sub. They were so awesome when we were working on my house. We didn't have napkins or plates or anything and they were so kind and quick to offer them when we stated the situation. Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly. The ugly: It is not a dine in experience at all. I would love to see them get new flooring, fresh paint, and newer tables. I get it is a small take out spot, but people are going to eat it and it wouldn't hurt to create a nicer ambiance. The bad: I do most of my orders online because the phone can be challenging. Often times my order wont be ready when it says it will be online, which is fine, but sometimes they get my order wrong. Twice I have ordered psychotic wings and I will get the hot sauce instead. I never know until I get home. A lot of items are wrapped in aluminum foil, which I don't recommend because even though I literally live 4 minute drive away, the roll or bread gets soggy from the steam. The good: Many people complain about the kids that work there. They have never been rude to me, they are just teens who are trying to earn a buck and have fun. They may not always be perfect but they work hard and the food is always good. The 2 large cheese pizza deal is fantastic. The wings are always fried really well. Very good wings for a takeout spot. The cheese steaks are what they are known for, but they have a lot of other great menu items. The hoagies are plentiful, and I love that you can get actual sharp provolone. Fries are always large portions. Underrated menu items are the burgers (very large and you can customize!), onion rings are FANFREAKINGTASTIC. They aren't the frozen crap you get at most take out spots. Make sure you ask for the house sauce with them as well. They do really good mozz sticks as well. I really do love the yellow sub. I wish they could serve beer instead of ice cream. It's probably a good thing they do not. I would be a gluttonous 600 pound man if they did. What a joke. How do I order a buffalo chicken cheese steak and get not hot sauce on it? Fries tasted like they were sitting out and not crispy, like we asked. Asked for no drum sticks for my wings and they gave me all drum sticks. Salad had unripe tomatoes in them and was overall a depressing looking salad. Worst part is they weren't even busy. The online ordering is not a very good interface. It's does not make ordering what you want easy so I had to call. Everytime I called I was immediately put on hold for 5 minutes but they just lay the phone down so I can hear the girl just talking to the guy who works there. So anyway, I hung up, called back, waited, listened to her conversation, repeat. I did that 3 times before she actually talked to me. All she said was do you live in Maple Shade, no, we don't deliver. I live 1.9 miles from shop, there are parts of Maple Shade farther away than where I live but she never asked. So I ordered pick up, I ordered a chicken cheesesteak and they forgot the cheese and were out of curly fries. I also got a sad looking chicken sandwich with brown lettuce. I don't understand any hype over this place, whatever they may have done well in the past, they no longer do it. The reason for 5 stars is because this business clearly stands by it's reputation. It's hard to find great service but even harder to find a company that makes up for there mistakes without thinking twice about satisfying their customers above all else. I'll start off my saying, I really really like this place. It actually saddens me to give them a 4*, but such is life. Their Italian hoagie is my favorite hoagie in this entire area. Portions are massive, so if you get the smallest size it will be plenty. I always get hot peppers on the hoagie and they really give it a great kick. My dad introduced me to this place and it's also his favorite hoagie in the area. My mom loves their cheesesteaks. In fact, if I ever go there I call her and ask her if she wants me to pick her up one. The only reason it's not a 5* is their delivery. I called once on a Saturday and they don't deliver until five, I was then forced to order elsewhere. Then I called again at night and they said they don't deliver to me because I'm on the other side of 38; I'm literally a 8-10 minute drive from there. It's because of those delivery policies that I don't order there more frequently. If they change that, I'll never order sandwiches from anywhere else again. read more

First, they have NO public restrooms. Second, the location is bizarrely located in the middle of all these homes. Fortunately, they did have about 3 tables on the inside and outside to sit. There are only bottled drinks, no fountain sodas. So, for the lack of amenities, its location, and lack of bathrooms I would not recommend this place as a pit stop if you are driving through Philly/NJ. Instead, I probably would have just taken the 95 and ate at Popeyes. But if I were living in the area, then I would definitely frequent this joint. As for the food, well I will admit that it is good and the prices are fairly reasonable for a very large and piping hot sandwich. They also sell pizzas here and their phone in orders during lunchtime was fun to watch. We sampled the buffalo wings (sweet and smoky - extra crispy batter), Philly cheesteak with mushrooms (bomb), and chicken parm sandwich (also delicious). I'm a native of South Jersey, but it's impossible to know about every single cheesesteak joint in the area. I actually heard about The Yellow Submarine on "The Best Thing I Ever Ate". I live elsewhere in the country now, so my husband and I decided to check them out on our next visit. Yum! I'm not sure I would call it the absolute best cheesesteak I ever had, but it was damn good. It was definitely one of the best cheesesteaks I've had in Jersey. Good flavor, good meat to cheese ratio, good bread. The value is also incredible. I think there were three sizes: mini, regular and large. I had a regular and it was quite sizeable. I can really pack away the food, but a regular sized steak and fries were too much. Next time I'd order a mini if I really wanted the fries. All in all a solid experience. I will definitely be back the next time I visit my folks! read more

Stopped by last night for dinner, definitely had one of the best cheese steaks in a while. Growing up in Philly and relocating to S. Jersey, I do occasionally get the cheesesteak craving and make my way out to Philly for a Cheesesteak but that will be no more! I've tried the cheese steak with mushroom added to it and the pizza steak. The cheese steak was soo beautiful. Just what you expect from a true original Philly cheese steak. The meat was so juicy and tender, bread was soft. The sandwich just melted in your mouth! 5 star cheesesteak for sure!!!! The pizza steak was a little drier and I don't recommend it. I think the tomato sauce sucks up the juices from the steak so it tastes a little drier. I would love to give it 5 stars, but giving it 4 for the lack of fountain sodas. A real cheese steak goes along with a nice drink being slurped with all that ice. Yes the place is dingee, but as the other reviewers said that is the appeal.
