Very small and crammed, new comics placed out on top of every comic bin so that you can't even search for the comics you want- the front desk told me not to move them- so pointless to come here to try and buy any comics( except for the newest week). Stuffy, way too small, the owner is rude (he was working front desk), and overall not a great comic shop. While continuing my comic book store hunting in the great state of California, my second and final destination was Yesteryear's Comics. Yesteryear is laid out mostly like your typical shop. I did notice they kept more than a few months worth of the current titles on the rack. Which worked out great for me since I was only buying new stuff. The trades looked well stocked. I was tempted by three of them, but I knew I had limited space left for goodies in my run bag. (That's my duffel bag that I'm going to use the day I runaway from home). The owner, at least I think it was the owner, was super friendly. But then again everyone I dealt with in California was super friendly. read more

I got back into comics a little more than a year ago, and Yesteryear's large selection of back issues made it really easy for my dusty collector instincts to kick back in. With that said, it's easily my go-to place for back issues from within the last few years, as well as new books and variants. Mike (the owner) gets a nice, new selection of books weekly, which really helped me expand my comic interests beyond the Big 2. Great vibe to the place which is part of the reason why I made Yesteryear my home store despite there being so many comic shops in SD. For what it's worth, I'm the type of customer that just wants to do my thing without being bothered, BUT if I need help or want to strike up a conversation, I expect down-to-earth, friendly, and knowledgeable service. I know most of these 5 star reviews are fake mostly women that wrote these reviews. Cmon now anybody ever seen episode of Big Bang Theory when 3 girls walk-in comic shop??? Mouths drop and everybody stops. The owner is jerk and swears his store is some Covenant of Comics. I remember going there when it opened and asked him he would carry figures or collectibles and he said "No just comics". I walk in recently and place is packed and crowded now and see whole bunch of garbage Funko Pops hit you in the face. Think I'm lying look at past photos few years ago. Start your pull here, this is the best comic shop in all of San Diego County. Best pull service. Ask about 20% Pull discounts and the 30% off trades everyday. Nice owner. Friendly. Not fake smile friendly just genuinely friendly helpful and keeps it real. He is responsive in letting you know which titles and issues are in stock. Current titles and their back issues are well priced. If it's against the wall they're most likely discounted. The discount depends on how long they've been out. He has a good availability of comics. If it's a current title he probably has most of their back issues. When Wytches was ending, I was able to buy all the back issues and got them discounted too. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about Yesteryear and Mike (the owner). I'd been out of the loop with the comic book world for over 10 years. When I started back up I went to a few popular comic book store locations and ran into this store. After just the first visit, I knew this is going to be my go-to. It's clean, organized, all back issues are well kept in boards and bags, without the store being too big to feel overwhelmed or lost. I felt like I was back at my old days of collecting. Mike not only greeted me but introduced himself and asked me what my name was. Since then, it's been like coming in to say hi to a friend. I don't feel intimidated to ask about how current story lines came to where they are. He's nice enough to either tell me how a character got there or if I don't want the story spoiled, he'd show me what books to get so I can catch up. As important as the customer service, the books are well stocked even the back issues. I've seen a series disappear then a week or two later most, if not all issues, have been replenished. He even offers pull-lists for those of who us want to make sure we get ours, know what I'm sayin'? Mike's always looking to help you find what you need. I get a good feeling he really enjoys what he does and it shows in how he caters to our nerdy needs. This is the best comic book store in San Diego! Mike is friendly and honest. He's always willing to tell you what's hot or whats worth reading. He may be running around alot but that's just more proof to show how much he cares about his shop and the comics. He always has a TON of new comics and variants that are priced better than any other store around, better than ebay usually. He has a huge collection of back issues and a large selection of new issues, variants, and trades. Plus most comics are discounted! I have been going to this comic book shop for a few years now and there are plenty of reasons why. First off, customer service. Mike is such a nice guy. He helped me start a pull list and the whole process was not intimidating at all. If there's a book you need he'll do this best to find it for you. Second, his prices are very competitive. Especially compared to other book shops that are down the road. Third, he has a great selection of books and merchandise ranging from indie books to the Big 2. From Manga to trade paperbacks. From blind boxes to Funko. Trust me, he has a large selection. T-shirts, toys, poster back issues. I'm surprised he has room for all of this stuff. Fourth, his place is pretty clean and has plenty of shelves. If you like to read indie books like Black Mask Studios or Double Take, he should be able to get you the books! Lastly, events and the little things. He will have an occasional signing at his shop and will give his customers a heads up of who and when the signing will be. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that he has extended open hours on #NCBD. That's New Comic Book Day... if you didn't know, now you know. (Baby, baby!) Plus, to make things interesting he'll have a Pigskin Pick 'Ems during the football season and give extra discounts if you choose plenty of winners for that week. AWESOME! The only bad thing I really have to say is it took me nearly 10-15 mins to find parking :S... I usually shop at "Comics n stuff", don't get me wrong good people there as well. I was looking for a comic (Chew Vol. 3) and couldn't find it anywhere in the San Diego area, So I decided to call up Yesteryear's Comics, the associate that answered the phone was cool enough to put the Comic on hold. Once I got there, I browsed around for a bid (and yes I have to say that the center comics were too packed... its a comic book store, I would rather see it packed instead of low selection) However I was looking for another Comic and the associate (even though he was busy) was able to guide me in the right direction he even informed me about the discounts which I thought was AWESOME!!. I also asked for other recommendations on another Comics (Recommended SEX), he gave me a little inside on what it was about, and I was sold (awesome comic by the way). This store is the reason I finally made a Yelp account. What makes this my go-to comic book store in San Diego (despite living down in Chula Vista) is the great customer service. There are other stores with very helpful and friendly staffs as well, but Mike is a step above the rest. For example, the first time I walked into the store I knew nothing of comics aside from one particular monthly Zombie book that also happens to be on TV. I had gone 31 1/2 years without ever reading comics but I was interested in exploring other titles. Not only was Mike patient with my complete and utter ignorance of the various publishers, titles, universes (universi?), and story lines, he took the time to make a few recommendations to me based on what I do like and explained a bit about each of them. I was also impressed when I walked in there for the second time (about two weeks after my first visit), and he not only recognized me but remembered my name and had some new recommendations based on our past discussion. This was a few months back, and I now have a weekly pull list, I stop in for "Nerd Lunch" every Wednesday (and often on other days), and have even got my wife into comics thanks to Mike. The selection of new books here is as good as anywhere I've been in San Diego. The back bin decently sized and well stocked for the square footage of the store (he's talking about adding another bin which will help), and the hardcover/paperback shelf is small but also reasonably well-stocked (he's told me he plans to expand this as well). It's also the most organized store I've visited. Overall, this is a great small store and he'll have my business for a long time. One logistical note; the parking lot can be quite cramped during the lunch rush. read more

My husband came home one day and went on and on about this comic book store and this guy named Mike. He insisted that Mike was not just super knowledgeable but helpful and fair with his pricing. We went in one Saturday morning and I had the pleasure of meeting Mike himself, I got to see the clean and well organized shop, very impressed. This is up there with my other favorite comic book store on Adams. I love the genuine and sincere attitude of this owner, we got a killer deal on spiderman comics. This is the best comic book store I've been to in San Diego, hands down. I've been coming to Yesteryear's Comics for years now. Mike, the owner, is always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about comics. Also, Mike's prices are below actual comic book cover price. As someone who buys comics almost every week, this saves me a lot of money. I was disappointed when I recently moved pretty far away from Yesteryear and started looking for a new comic book store. I tried other stores for a couple weeks but the service does not meet the standard that this store has led me to expect from a comic book store. The service here is great, the prices are great, and the selection of comics consistently superior, so I will continue to drive from La Mesa back to this store every Wednesday so that I can actually enjoy the experience of buying comics instead of being treated like a wallet on legs, as happened at other places I tried. read more

He's a great guy that is very knowledgeable about his product, understands his customers, and carries all the variant issues you're looking for. He's extremely fair on his prices and keeps a very clean and tidy store. He carries a variety of back issues at the store. They are bagged and boarded, and well organized. I LOVED this comic shop so much. The owner was very helpful, knowledgeable, and answered all of my annoying questions. I went in to just look around because I just so happened to be in the shopping plaza and wanted to specifically check out Deathstroke comics and when I asked where they were he walked me over to them, showed me my options, and explained to me which ones were new and which ones were from a different series (which was a huge plus because he didnt just point to them or say "over there on the right") I also appreciated the fact that he didnt treat me like just some girl who didnt know about comics because ive gotten that vibe before at other places. Wow too much stuff and not enough space. Comics and funko everywhere and I do mean everywhere. But if you enjoy the hunt they may have what you want in a 1000 square foot store. Lots of collectibles too. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. T-shirt galore especially anime. No manga books just toys. Mostly modern action figures like avengers. Prices reasonable. Stop looking. Just come here. Mike is super friendly. First time we went in, he greeted us and asked us if we were looking for anything in particular. I started asking about some upcoming titles and also some current ones that I wanted, including back issues. He picked them out for me. Came in the following week and he even remembered my name. I was pretty surprised because I didn't think anything about our conversation was special for him to remember us. Just goes to show how incredibly attentive Mike is to his customers. 6 months later, I'm in here every week. And this is the only shop where I keep my pull list. -Shop has a great selection, as well as some Silver Age collectibles. -Discounts on the first week of a release, slightly less discount for it's second and third week. -Extremely clean and organized -Mike is extremely knowledgeable. -Frequent sales. -Only downside is parking during lunch hour. It may be difficult. I come here after work though, so it's not a problem for me. Mike also runs some fun contests for his regular customers. He has gotten to know my preferences really well, and points me into the direction of some new stuff. Hasn't missed the mark yet. He supports great artists and writers. And, he cares a great deal for his customers. If he's out of something, he will get it for you. He networks well with other people in the business, which only makes for a better shop. There are other, bigger, comic stores in San Diego. But I like this store and have made it my first stop for new issues. It's a newer place, only open for about a year now. Located in an easy access area in a strip mall, between the 15 and the 163, I found it by accident one day and walked in. The owner's a cool guy - he's usually listening to sports talk radio during the day. My favorite thing is that he discounts his current issues. Comics out in the first week get 25% off (I think?). The second week are a smaller discount. After that they go to regular price. But it's a great service that differentiates him from other stores in the area! Who doesn't want a discount? He buys good quantities too so you can usually find what you need before he sells out. He's also got some posters, some figures, and sports cards if you're interested in those. The graphic novel selection is decent but not near the size of So Cal Comics, but his store isn't that size either. I mainly come here, though, for the friendly atmosphere and the great discounts. That's a hard combination to beat - and I think that as he continues to build his business Yesteryear will become an even better destination for all-things-comics here in SD. read more

The worst store in San Diego , you have boxes pilled taller than human height , couldn't get to comics I wanted to see , when I asked for the price of a unpriced comic you responded with check the other ones , what the others that have no price , you got stacks of comics on top of the ones on the tables so every time you are looking for a certain title you have to move shit around some customer service you have , this is one reason shops like yours don't make it , the shop "used to be nicer" better service. Now your a messy unorganized store , get a bigger store . A mark of a great local comic shop owner is their ability to recommend new comics to their patron's taste. Mike did just that on my first visit to Yesteryear's Comic when he suggested I add the new Marvel Now Thor #1 to my pick up list. I was skeptical because I really never followed Thor and he isn't exactly one of my favorite heroes. But his recommendation made me change my mind and now that comic is part of my weekly pulls. His last suggestion was Peter Panzerfaust from Image Comics but that is rare to find but he said he'd let me know when the new issues would come in. It is very neat for a comic store which I find to be rare and refreshing because I'm just use to chaos in your LCS. The order speaks to the professionalism I really have been hoping to see so that haughty literature heads can see that graphic narrative and comic book vendors are sold in classy places (not to say the other establishments in San Diego are not classy, they're just not really neat and tidy like Yesteryear's. Has a pretty great section of up to date titles and Mike does his best to see if he can get what you're looking for. Remember to shop at stores like Yesteryear's because they are a diamond in the rough. I may be a comic book nerd, but we're smart and shrewd customers too. I grew up with the Xmen, and as a child born in the 80's I was really a kid of the 90's. My love for Xmen extends farther than my arms can stretch, in fact it started on the other side of the pacific ocean. I loved the Xmen from the Philippines to the states. Growing up watching the cartoon I always pretended to be my favorite Xman- the cool, calm and ever charming Cajun GAMBIT. I dreamed of owning an action figure, though the best we could do then was the trading card and that was always more than enough because I would just draw him over and over... Fast forward 20 years later now an adult- I didn't know that I would be taken back to such joys when I came to your store to come across a comic hanging on your wall- Uncanny Xmen 266. The first appearance of GAMBIT! I just had to have it! Thanks to a dear friend, he got it for me and I was a kid again. I wish you and your wonderful establishment continued success so that many others, young and old can experience what I have.
