Yocco's Hot Dog King is a 100+ year old cultural phenomenon in the Allentown/Bethlehem area, where frankfurters are truly snack royalty. There are a half dozen of these small fast food outlets by this name (as well as several other franchises and independent dog houses) around these parts. Our reason for stopping- a need for a break after a long drive home from Niagara Falls. Although still 75 minutes away, we like Yocco's individually handgrilled sausages from past visits, and our hunger after 6 hours on the road had us looking forward to the break and even fantasizing about that first bite and snap. We ordered a dozen of their classics, grilled and rolled with mustard, onion bits and a thin smear of their unique savory chili. Each was wrapped in white paper and boxed in plain cardboard. We also grabbed a large size crinklecut fries. We were really hungry, and quickly wolfed down those crisp babies as we drove south again toward Quakertown and then onto Route 313 all the way to Newtown. Sorry. No pics, as that Yelp courtesy was forgotten by our yowling bellies. We scarfed down two hots dogs apiece in the car, saving the final two for our kitchen table. While I wouldn't have them as a regular part of my diet, these Yoccos really hit the spot. No apologies. The Hot Dog King is proudly displayed by an iconic mural in the parking lot and in life size form in the dining room. If you're new to Yocco's just know that "everything" on your hotdog includes chili, mustard, and chopped raw onion - no thank you. Yes, finally I, along with SGW's Local Eats & Take Outs made it to Yocco's. Now the reason I am here is to defend the honor of Yocco's, and also to get some great tasting dogs! So, call this a Re-Review of Frank the Tanks Raw Dogging. Now I walked in along with my Outside the Box Live Co Host FP (False Paranormal NEPA), and we were greeted with open arms, a big hello! FP ordered a cheeseburger which he said was really good, they made to to his order actually, he likes his well done, (Thats how they do them as we were told). Me I, to a degree, recreated Tanks, I got a plain hot dog. Now the plain was a 4 out of 5, the dog had a great taste, good bun to dog ratio, it was toasted. Now it would have been a 5'er if I hod some type of topping on it. Now the second I tried was the chili dog, now I did forget to add the cheese as per tanks video. Again, good bun to dog ratio, the hot dog was great, now what made it a 5 out of 5, the onions, mustard, which I'll talk about in a second, and the chili sauce. The mustard as looking at it was not your basic bright yellow mustard but almost looked like a brownish color, regardless of it tasted great on the dog. Now the sauce, they don't overkill your dog with it but just enough to give it that great taste. So again, tank was wrong on the plain and chili dog. Now my third dog was the mustard and onions, another 5 out of 5. Now the fries were average pre frozen but came out nice and hot. GREAT DOGS YOCCO"S, YOU ARE DEFINITELY "THE HOT DOG KINGS", and the honor of the dog has been defended. Don't go here. Unfortunately, this place is going downhill fast. It's been around for nearly 100 years. But, there are better places to go and the atmosphere is bad and the overall experience is bad. And the staff is getting worse and worse and worse. And I don't like this place anymore. I moved 2000 miles away for four years and when I came back it was way different and everything was bad. When I'm in the mood for a hot dog, this is where I like to go. I like to order the chili cheese dog with everything on it. The hot dogs are slightly burnt, with a dry chili sauce on top. If you get it with everything, you'll get american cheese, onions, and mustard. I like to get two of these along with a large Mrs. T's pierogi's which will contain three large pierogi's. Unfortunately, you won't get any dipping sauce with that--I would like to see some sour cream to dip that in. But overall, I like the food here and prices are reasonable, but note that this is cash only, but there is an ATM machine in the back. If you don't like/want hot dogs, they also offer hamburgers and cheese steaks. You'll also find crinkled fries along with an assortment of drinks. Their is a drive-thru or you can sit inside. The place isn't overly big and looks old. Tables are a dark finish and the benches are a bright red, green, or blue. It's a bit of a drive for us to get up here, but about 3-4 times a year, I get in the mood for their hot dogs and make the trek north. read more

Nestled a little more than an hour or so north of Philadelphia is a time warp in the form of a Hot Dog restaurant called Yocco's. With six locations in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania Yocco's has been delivering qualities hot dogs amongst other classic american foods since 1922. I had received a tip from somebody to go here since I like hot dogs so much & I must say it was so much more than just stopping in for a hot dog. It was like going back in time. I wasn't even at the restaurant yet when I started to get a feel for the place. I had already passed a few farms & some old-fashioned restaurants but then I saw the advertisement for Yocco's on a bus stop and could tell that Yocco's was going to be like some of the other places I had passed during my drive there. The only concern that entered my mind was "what will the state of the restaurant be?" It's not out of the question for a localized restaurant chain to not be in the best of condition right? Luckily I didn't have to worry about that issue because as soon as I pulled into the parking lot it became clear that Yocco's values keeping the property & restaurant in pristine condition. So upon entering the restaurant and finding myself back in time with the entire restaurant looking like a movie set in the 80's my eyes immediately were glued to the menu. I could smell the dogs cooking & I needed food ASAP. True to the time warp that Yocco's is they are a cash only establishment so bring some or hit the ATM if they have them. Rocco's South had one but not all six of their locations do. The hot dogs at Yocco's come made well done, you have to ask for them to be cooked otherwise if you prefer them not to be well done, with mustard, diced onions & a special Chili Sauce and that made my heart smile because I am a firm believer that Ketchup does not belong on hot dogs. So to see that MUSTARD not ketchup comes on them in the restaurants preferred state told me I was going to really enjoy these dogs. The two main staples of Yocco's is their hot dogs of course but also to my surprise Mrs. T's Pierogies locally founded & headquartered in Pennsylvania. I'm not usually one to get pierogies, let alone see them at a fast food restaurant, but I had to have them to say I had a true Yocco's experience. I also got fries & a cheese burger which is also served with mustard, onions & the special chili sauce. I was so confused when the food was just plopped on a tray with a liner and told to enjoy my food, but then I remembered I was in the 80's and went about my business and took a seat. So after tearing through my food I must say that I was not let down. The hotdog had a great snap to it and the mix of the onions, mustard & chili sauce was fantastic. Everything else was pretty good too especially given how affordable everything was priced but there's a reason why they refer to themselves as "The Hot Dog King." While I thoroughly enjoyed my meal I walked away with an empty feeling due to the fact that Yocco's isn't necessarily a short trip for me. As I bid a fond farewell to Yocco's I knew I would be back but wouldn't be back fast enough. For anybody in the tri-state area it's definitely worth making a detour there if you're on a trip to the Poconos or anywhere else in the Lehigh Valley area. Starting with the plain dog, there was absolutely nothing special about it. It wasn't even that good. Moving on to the chili dog, the chili was disgusting. I didn't even finish that dog. My husband got two plain dogs with whatever condiments he usually puts on, and he didn't finish his second dog either. The pierogies he ordered we decent, at best... and no thanks with the fries. I can see how someone who didn't grow up on Yocco's "doesn't get it". It is a local's only real reference to fast food as a kid. They are Reading's Berks hot dogs and done so well. This was the place to go for fresh hot dogs, and sides, and when I say sides I mean the Choc milk . it has been a while since I was in a Yocco's, but I use to know everyone and anyone. From going into the first original w/ my gram and seeing the boss man ted, to visiting Bruce B at his different locations to seeing a young girl and to this day I can not remember her name start on Hamilton Blvd at Cedar Beach, become a manager in Emmaus and get moved to Catty Road store still w/ the company. As we all know the food is great, and the service is fabulous. The fact that the employees stay as long as they do, says more to this business then great food, at a reasonable price. It says they have a great sense of community and want to make sure the locals have a place to visit, and the returning locals have an iconic place to return to. read more

I stopped here on a drive through the area on the advice of my brother, who is a fan. One positive thing you can say is that the dogs are inexpensive. In the day of 3-5 dollar hot dogs that is refreshing. I ordered three all the way and the cost was under $5 so if price is the chief concern I'd say Yoccos is a bargain. The Yocco's special is a very good deal and a good dog. Two reasons I didn't give it a five... 1. I like K&J Doggies in Bechtelsville better (again, sorry) 2. No sauerkraut... This place has a nice old fashioned feel to it and their hotdogs buns has a nice, pleasant chewiness to them, in which they're most known for (their steamed buns). These hot dogs are to Allentown what Cheese Steaks are to Philly. I've been going to this place since I was a little kid and nothing has changed. The sauce, dogs, buns are all the same and that's awesome. If you want to try something quintessentially Allentown then you have to stop here. The restaurant is not much to look at but let's be honest... that's not why you're here. The people are friendly and efficient but parking can be a bit of a pain depending upon the location.
