Well unlike the reason we looked for this place there were no happy hour specials. However we stuck around had a drink and then sampled their food and the saying goes don't judge a book by its cover well don't judge a place by the outside appearance. We arrive shortly after 515 went inside and we're probably the first people there. We sat at the bar. The drinks were great the food was great and the waitress was awesome. I found this gem on Yelp last summer when we were driving back to Buffalo from Blue Bell, PA. From the map, it appeared to be right off the highway we were on, but in reality - it was far from that. Once I set my phone's GPS to the address, it took us a good 30-40min of driving around country backroads that we thought we were totally lost and would die of hunger on multiple occasions. Luckily, we finally arrived and it did NOT disappoint. They had a Bloody Mary bar where you can customize your own Bloody Mary, and an extensive beer list including Hitachino Nest white ale, a Belgian white style beer from Japan - we were impressed, as we've only found that in one (Japanese) restaurant in Buffalo. I got the trap burger and my husband made some kind of a custom omelette. It's been over a year so I can't remember all the details of my burger though I do remember that it was absolutely delicious and I ate the entire thing. I recall the hubby enjoyed his omelette as well and we left as a happy couple of fatties. Well, I as happier than he was since I could relax and nap but he still had to drive another 5 hours to get us home. The service was OK. It was very much a locals' place and the waitstaff seemed a lot more friendlier with the locals/regulars, which is understandable. Once the food arrived...I was AMAZED!!! Double hats off to the Chef for his delightful creations. The food varieties are astounding and quality reigns supreme. I started with the homemade pierogies (sidebar: skipped the Mac and cheese only because there were so many awesome choices!!!). The chef did not disappoint. Rounded my meal with the Ramen and it rivals my favorite ramen restaurant in NYC. TRULY one of a kind! If I could have hugged the Chef I would have. Definitely stands out above the crowd. A great yelp find. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but they are solid with great food, fair prices, and amazing drink selection. Coming in on a Saturday night, you're met with a boisterous crowd, busily eating, drinking and conversing, all with live music in the background. Dress is casual, crowd aged generally from 30-50. Approx 250 bottles of beer on tap, along with about a dozen draft beers, and wide variety of menu items. Food specials and drafts are written on a chalkboard near the bar. Seating for 50 at tables and hightops along the wall, plus another 20 around the square bar, complete with a textured copper top. Meat and cheese tray features numerous local selections. We had the smoked trout (lightly smoked, light and delicious) from Emmaus and the peppercorn pecorino from Italy, both delicious. Food choices vary from small plates of pomme frites and fresh raw oysters, tuna poke bowls, mussels and flatbreads to soups & salads, sandwiches and heavier entrees. We had the Trap Door Burger, with dry-aged grass fed beef, pork belly confit, egg, buttermilk aioli, smoked gouda and red pepper piperade and the Pan Roasted Long Island Duck Breast with scotch duck egg and acorn squash ragout. Both were incredible, probably the best food we had during the 3 days we were in the area. Private parking lot, which can get pretty full when the restaurant is full. Wandering the countryside north of Philly after a job in Old Forge. This yelp review jumped out at me. It's a bit of a harrowing drive in the dark in unfamiliar territory, but wow! Well worth the trip. Today was the first day for a trial small plate of Chorizo Scotch Egg. Perfect soft boiled egg in a chorizo shell garnished with a crispy prosciutto and pickled onions. Then charred Brussels sprouts with pickled peppers and house smoked apple sauce. The final and best was the seared duck breast with roast beets, shallot confit, shaved fennel and fingerling taters. I've tried this place many times and I don't like it all. The food is unusual, odd for a beer bar and super expensive. And the potions of meat are very small for some reason? The bar has a quirky feel to it like they're trying too hard to be different. It's just a bar, install some tv's and turn up the music. We did not like the odd menu, the odd beer selection as if it were a steak nor did we enjoy our food. We like to spend our money locally and would love to visit this place but between their very odd hours, schedule and unusual bar menu, we don't. My wife and I popped into the Trapp Door a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night and were able to pick up two seats at the bar. The Trapp Door is a smaller overall restaurant with a large dining room that is open with both a large bar and mixed seating. It is a true gastropub with an expansive and varied menu, significant beer selection, and bar or pub feel. We have been to the Trapp Door multiple times for dinner, lunch, and bunch and have never really had a poor experience or a bad meal. We each enjoyed some beers and ciders from the extensive bottle and draft selection. The bartender provided great feedback about our selections and helped my wife choose what to order. As far as food goes we had the kale caesar salad, the ramen, and the house burger. The kale caesar was very flavorful with the perfect bite of anchovy and the crisp crunch of the baby kale. The ramen bowl was very flavorful, almost beyond words. The entire dish was well put together and really made a statement. The Trapp Door Burger is one of the more under rated in the Lehigh Valley and the shoe string fries are all ways great. Another great experience at the Trapp Door. read more

So here I am with a friend - the day before the Lehigh Valley Half marathon and looking for something vegan to eat. I walk in, nothing vegan on the menu other than soup. The bartender asks why the long face (are you expecting a joke here?) and I explain my situation. I need non-greasy, vegan food - and allentown is very limiting. He tells me that they can whip up a mushroom panini in no time, am I interested? He explained the different mushrooms and sauces that go into it, all vegan, and I emphatically said yes. This is fun place. It's small and not particularly fancy, but the food and drink are good and the service is even better. We visited on a weeknight during the dinner rush so the atmosphere was lively and the servers were working hard. Andrew was very attentive and quite knowledgeable on local breweries and farms. I had the halibut with quinoa and foie Gras. It was well-balanced and tasted fresh - none of the muddled flavors that are so common at "gastropubs" these days. What a hidden gym! More people need to check this place out. Outside looks like a house on the side of the road. Upon walking in you find it to be a nice cozy bar and lounge. The Trapp Door is just a magical secret. Ok so maybe it's not a secret to many but I will tell you why it's worth driving to. Philly people - you must come here! NJ people - you too! If you look up the definition of Gastropub - this is it. I've traveled all over the world and tried many who claim to be Gastropubs - this place is the true definition. The service is as friendly as you can get. They make you feel comfortable and as if you were a local and as if you have known them forever. We were 3 guests and as appetizers we had the bone marrow and the duck confit, then had the smoked trout and the Spanish chorizo. The duck, bone marrow and home made smoked trout ( and I'm not necessarily a fish fan) were absolutely amazing. Already dreaming about. Seriously -to write home about. The chorizo was good but average. Then we split a burger - medium rare - and let me tell you - if you are craving a burger - you will fall in love! Cooked exactly as we had requested. They also had homemade condiments. Phenomenal. One of us decided we should order desserts and many times after having such a great meal - I'm apprehensive of ruining it by ordering dessert since sometimes it's not a speciality and leaves you a bit disappointed. Yeah, no. You will just be even more in love. We had the pumpkin crème brûle ( Im over all the pumpkin and was apprehensive however it was spectacular and the pumpkin was true pumpkin - not forced). The beer selection is quite good and they're completely fine with you trying a sample of the draft beers, which is always great. The service is very good, but the real star here is the food. This review cannot improve on the huge cross section of existing reviews. I cannot give a full 5 stars because of my personal preferences. You know what they say about opinions and a**holes? We all have one. That they didn't have an "American swill" lager draft e.g. Yuengling is unforgivable. Is this a conceited attempt to act elite? Having a vast selection of unfamiliar overly priced variations of beer is what you get here. (I was a homebrew enthusiast 25 years ago and know a lot of these so-called craft beers are hype). On the one hand I am pleased there are variety and choice, but they are way overpriced for what you get because, for example, some brewer adds tangerine peels to the mix or something. Then too, I'm not a fan of flavored coffee. I like foreign import coffee (and beer and wine), but dumping flavors into these, then charging a premium is an American mongrel thing. The food is tasty and of a decent "take extra home" portions. But again, they add an odd spice or trinket like a fig piece on vegetarian pita bread with smoked cheese. Odd combination. Several menu items have odd combinations. Study in detail. To each his own. The hamburger with egg was extraordinary. Though you can get something similar with bottomless fries at familiar non-fast food hamburger place (or see my Frenchtown NJ Cafe review), for half the price. The Cuban sandwich is extraordinary too. The acoustics are incredibly terrible. You can barely converse and hearing the waiter describe things is a challenge. It was relief to get out of the place. Let's begin with this is a really good place to find. A Gem of a place. This is a place the locals eat at. This is an old wood building that once was an old gas station that is very old. It was converted over 50 years ago into what is now a Resturant. The current owners really have a love and appreciation for there love of a taste of the local cuisine. The beers are crafted locally and some are brought in. The mix drinks are good. The food is exceptional in this very unassuming building. This restaurant is a wonderful place for its incredible beer selection. The tap selection is so broad I've never ordered a bottle in spite of the deep and broad options of bottled beer. Not fine dining, very casual with lots of wood. No white tablecloths or anything fancy. But it was warm and friendly. Place was packed since it was Valentine's evening. The menu is impressive but I'm still thinking that they will over promise and under deliver. I have never been more wrong! My duck was fantastic. Everyone loved their meals......LOVED their meals. Dear Hubby, who is a picky eater (but I say that he has a very narrowly defined palatte) had the spare ribs - loved it. Caramelized brussel sprouts - yum. Seabass- yum. Desserts were average (creme brulee was average but too sweet) to exceptional (homemade strawberry and chocolate ice cream). Service was outstanding. We travel frequently throughout the US, Europe, and here and there. While we don't consider ourselves demanding diners, we know and enjoy a good meal. Don't fall for the high rating, the food is very mediocre. I should've known to stay away when there was a scotch egg and cubano on the menu. The scotch egg was way way way over priced, just because it was soft boiled??? It wasn't even crispy! The greens and sauce was delicious. I got the cubano, since nothing looked appealing to me. Get something simple how could they possibly mess up????? I don't know how it was sous vide. It was so dry, bread soggy and extremely salty!!
