This is a great studio if you are looking for an athletic style of yoga where the teachers and classmates motivate you to practice to the best of your ability. As other reviewers said, this places gives you a good workout. But more importantly, teachers care about proper technique and make you take the time to do the poses properly. Most yoga teachers give alignment cues, but I felt that teachers at Yoga Belly have a deeper understanding of biomechanics and point out the little things that go unmentioned at other studios. Jeff and Adam are my favorites but every class I've taken has been good. People look for different things in a yoga studio ... I'm not saying this is absolutely the best choice for everyone but you should at least come check it out. They have an unlimited first month deal for new students. Although their address is on Castro street, the studio entrance is actually at the public parking lot BEHIND Kirin Chinese Restaurant, which you can enter on Hope street. There's plenty of parking on weekend mornings but weeknight evenings can be a bit difficult. The studio is quite large - can probably fit 60 people. Most classes are heated to ~90 degrees and teachers will turn the heat on/off as needed. They have plenty of props like blocks, straps, and yoga balls. There are 2 change rooms but no shower (one of the few shortcomings ... but I usually don't shower at a studio anyway). They do not have their own bathroom but have keys to private bathrooms shared by other businesses in the same plaza. read more

Today was my first Yoga Belly class and I was very pleasantly surprised! First off, the location is great. I was a little worried at first it being off Castro street and the parking hell that you could possibly go through but there is a parking lot right behind the building and many spots open off a side street steps away so that was very nice. Walking up into the building, I was greeting by all the people there chatting in the front lobby, everyone was very friendly! Secondly, the yoga instructor, absolutely amazing!! She was fun, outgoing, very informative and helpful, she caters to everyones needs whether you are a beginner or advanced. I never thought I would be interested in joining a yoga studio. I've always just taken the classes offered at my local gym but after the experience at Yoga Belly I will definitely be joining the studio! The price for unlimited with automatic payments is unbelievable! You just can't beat that price, as well as the online registering that guarantees you a spot in the class of your choice. Love love love!! Yoga belly is fantastical! Vinyasa in a heated room is genius! A great way to create heat fast to open up the body. I feel so much progression in my asana practice and I learn new anatomical facts almost every class. Plus I've had a number of emotional break throughs in that very room. LOVE this place. I moved to the area last year and was struggling to find a hot yoga studio that was challenging yet fun. Yoga Belly fits this bill exactly in all of these ways: -Instructors are knowledgeable and helpful (Matt, Edna, Amber, Vivian and William especially!) - Class is challenging!! My practice improved so much in the months that I was at Yoga Belly - Great workout! You will sweat and it will hurt. - Music is a nice mix between your typical yoga spiritual music and hip hop - Clean studio with plenty of goodies (blocks, towels, bands, coffee) - A full schedule of classes so you always have options Unfortunately, the mountain view studio was too far for me to drive to. I have tried Yoga Belly classes with three different instructors here. 1-Although the instructors seem competent enough I have only heard once or twice a warning of how to come out of a deep stretch to avoid injury. I am a certified instructor and have years of practice, so it is not for my own good but I worry about less experienced students. 2- They play loud radio-like music. I practice yoga in order to get out of daily stress. I like to focus on my breathing, my body and on how I feel as I challenge myself with Yoga, but doing it while listening to Lady Gaga's music blasting in my ears, NO THANKS! Sadly, this seems to be a trend among instructors. Today after the second song by Justin Timberlake I had to leave. I can't concentrate on my breathing with the same old pop music I hear on the radio everyday and the instructor shouting over it "concentrate on your ujjayi breath!" It seems that it's many people's style though. So if you like quieting your thoughts with loud pop music, knock yourself out! If you rather hear your own body, STAY AWAY! read more

I was hesitant to write this review, however, believe it must be done so that at least someone can be made aware of this issue. I am conflicted by the positive reviews here. This is about the yoga belly class lead by Andrew. While a talented musician, I do not think its appropriate to leave the room multiple times to get your guitar ready (was held in a stretch pose for way too long). Also, all he did was speak of himself throughout the whole practice and mention his own personal experiences (note they were all negative). Just not a good vibe for yoga. It seemed like he was distracted and not focused on us or the practice. read more

I absolutely love this studio. All the instructors are great, and have very different styles--from fun the fun and fast paced choreographed moves of William's classes to long and intense poses of Edna's classes. They also play fun tunes (especially Will). They are very encouraging and truly support everyone's growth, regardless of level. On a couple of occasions, they have taken time with me after class to help me work on a pose that may be presenting a challenge for me so they can better see what I am doing and offer advice on ways to adjust. My practice has greatly improved since joining Yoga Belly, and feel blessed for finding such a wonderful place and a wonderful group of people with whom to practice yoga! read more

Definitely not a beginner's place. I took both types of classes and it was like no other yoga I had been exposed to. I was expecting more of a relaxing, stretching focus, but the focus was much more on sweating, losing weight, and toning up. This is fine, but if you are out of shape, elderly, or have back/other problems, this is definitely not the place for you. read more

I did quite a bit of research for a yoga studio that would best fit my needs in the Mountain View area. After much consideration, I have to say this place was my best choice. It was exactly what I was looking for. Friendly people, cleanliness, awesome music to help motivate, heat to facilitate muscular movement, and best of all, SWEAT! I'm going to admit that I'm not a huge fan of working out, especially if it feels like a chore but once you get this going, you will want to keep coming back. It is fun, and challenging. I enjoy William's yoga belly classes because it best fits my needs, which is core work. Will always makes sure I get the poses right, without really putting me on the spot. He is kind, encouraging and helpful. I took Jeff Lang's power yoga class once and I got through it, but I'm not quite sure I'm at that level yet. He is also awesome if you're slightly more advanced. Let me tell you, though I came out of there feeling amazing. I was sore for a couple of days, but nothing some Advil, stretching and hot tub can't fix. :) No joke, after a month of yoga twice a week, I feel stronger, energized, and my body craves it. I'm going on vacation soon but as soon as I come back, I will definitely be a regular. I highly recommend it! Mornings are better for me, more parking and it is the best way to start your day! Great class, great instructors and great studio space too - very convenient if you're working in the technology corridor. I tried an advanced class not having done yoga in many years - it combined traditional yoga with also physical fitness. It wasn't easy for me but worked my way through it. So I decided to try a more intermediate-level class to work my way back up to the more advanced. Suffice to say, I'm hooked again on yoga thanks to Yoga Belly and looking forward to trying more classes with a variety of instructors to teach and challenge me. read more

This place is cleaner than most other hot yoga places. It's got HW floors so the room does not smell as bad. They also open both doors to Leto the air flow. However for their power yoga, it's not as intense as Yoga at Cindy's. It does not get as hot or crowded line Cindy's. so if you like it less hot, and cleaner than come here. read more

Went there for the first time today. William was the instructor and he was GREAT! Had an excellent workout..I highly recommend this place. William made it fun, interactive and was patient with everyone's pace..i dont need a stuck up, quiet place to practice yoga...william made it fun and that's what i need after a long day of work at the office. Yoga Belly is a great studio in Mountain View. They have several types of classes and pretty good teachers. Go at a time that you like and you'll find what is right for you. If you need hands on assistance, be sure to find a teacher that will help you. Otherwise, you're pretty much on your own to adjust and make sure you're doing things correctly. The only caution here is that the studio does a lot of contests and Groupons, so sometimes it can get so crowded that you're almost standing on top of people. And, sometimes the floor doesn't look very clean. Other than those small complaints, I'd say Yoga Belly is worth a shot. Definitely a different type of yoga experience as other reviews mention. read more

Love everything about this studio! From the owners to the instructors to the check in staff to the regulars, everyone who comes to this studio is incredibly friendly and nice. They foster a community of excited, energetic people who are ready to get a serious workout in. Yoga Belly is a beginner-friendly class, but not necessarily for beginners - most instructors mention resting and taking it as far as you are comfortable. Let me preface this. I work the check-in desk here in exchange for yoga. However, prior to becoming a check-in person, I paid for yoga here. I live in Hayward and I've been to tons of yoga studios- different Bikram studios and vinyasa studios through Fremont, Santa Clara, Union City, Santa Cruz, Sunnyvale, and San Francisco. I have been a regular at a few of these studios and knew which teachers were my favorites (challenging class, but friendly teacher) and which teachers weren't my favorites (lackluster about correcting your form or not challenging at all). I have found that I have had 100% success rate here at Yoga Belly. The teachers have always been hands down amazing, friendly, and given me quite the workout. The studio itself is very clean and the vibe in general at the studio is very young and hip. As I mentioned previously, I live in Hayward and work in San Jose, but I still make the trek out here because I love love love this studio. (And I did even before I became part of the check-in crew!) read more

This is not your average yoga class, nor may it be exactly what you want in a yoga class. Enter classes at Yoga Belly with an understanding that it is NOT interested in giving you a ton of deep breathing meditative space (their slogan advertises this pretty openly: light on spirituality, heavy on exercise). When teachers carry through on that well (Adam and Sean are good examples in my experience), it's a very good class that mixes real challenge with motivation and fun. The problem this method has is that there's not really an "intermediate" class option. There's really basic "Yoga Belly," which is not a challenging yoga class -- mostly like a very elementary (decent for getting your alignment on track but not really for sweating/getting your blood flowing) class with some situps for good measure ... and then there's "Power Yoga." With the right teacher, the Power Yoga class is really great. I had Adam as a sub once and really enjoyed his emphasis on holding your chaturanga instead of collapsing through the sun salutation. But Courtney's classes on Wednesdays frustrated me a little bit -- there's so much emphasis on getting to more advanced poses (splits, arm balances). IF you're already there, you are in great shape and she is a good motivator and a clearly very accomplished yogi. But she doesn't offer a sense of guiding people who aren't there yet to the poses you need to build strength ... in order to do that advanced stuff in the first place. No sense of the interstitial, which just widens the gulf, unfortunately. Not the most empowering experience. read more

YogaBelly has really helped me establish a Yoga practice. I was always slim and never had trouble with weight but I always had trouble with strength and developing muscle and tone. I also couldn't really get into running or the gym even though I did both intermittently for years and pretty seriously. But at YogaBelly, they have different levels of classes, convenient timings, easy parking most of the time and they almost always accommodate you if you show up last minute. I have gotten significantly stronger, more flexible, starting to get more muscle and of course I feel great! I mostly study with Will, Matt and Edna. They are all fantastic in their own ways. Will teaches the more basic classes and he is a good teacher for a beginner. Matt is a great overall teacher and he teaches across levels. Edna is an advanced teacher and you should generally be somewhat comfortable with basic poses if you wanna take her class. She has a unique style and is very outspoken so her instruction might bother you if you have a specific traditional view of yoga in mind. Overall, with there no-nonsense online reservation system, great clean space, congenial staff and the special offers that appear every now and then, its a great place to practice Yoga. read more

Everything is pretty right on the previous reviews so no need for me to repeat. But for me I enjoy the atmosphere of a smaller studio and you get to know your fellow students and instructors. Not as plush as other studios that have showers but they provide free small towels, coffee, tea and candy! Yes, candy is unhealthy but let's have a little fun in life. I tried a Yoga Belly class a couple days ago and was blown away. I just moved to the area from the East Coast and had heard great things about the "yoga in California" but this exceeded my expectations. The studio itself is gorgeous - very clean and airy. They sell a handful of cute yoga items in the front store part, then the classroom is in the back. The class took place during a 95 degree day, so it was a perfect hot yoga temp. The instructor, Andrew, was so friendly and welcoming. He even had us all go around the room and say our name and why we like yoga at the beginning of class! I had never seen that anymore. His flow was challenging but also fun. He made jokes throughout class to remind us that yoga doesn't need to be taken too seriously. He also had some pretty zenful thoughts during savasana and played the guitar which was a really awesome touch. Amazing class, and I can't wait to go back. read more

This is a workout-focused yoga studio. They're super friendly and know most of the clients by their first name. The space is really nice with natural light and mirrors across the entire front wall. The monthly rate ($99 with a 6 month commitment) is on the cheap side for yoga studios these days (IMO). The regular lunchtime classes are great for folks who work in the area. read more

i can't say enough great student about yoga belly. i got the groupon deal and seriously cancelled my gym membership once i bought a regular unlimited monthly pass. you will sweat up a storm, but all the instructors i've had have been great about adding easier or harder modifications depending on the class level. this is one of the only places i can shut off my stupid overactive brain, get an amazing workout, and leave feeling better than when i walked in :). read more

I love the yoga belly concept. We focus on the core which it is actually very important for any of the yoga poses and life in general. I love Will's classes. I went to this studio for two months so I'm writing this on the basis of my time trying out the studio. I was really excited to find a heated studio near home, but I think the Yoga Belly method is probably not for me...the classes include about 20 minutes of ab work...they try to yoga it up, but it's mostly different types of crunches. This sounds good, but it takes away from actual yoga time so I didn't find it as beneficial as I anticipated. It also means the studio is more aerobics than yoga focused. That being said, I really enjoyed the instructors, my favorite being Barbara, who was no nonsense but lots of fun. The studio is sometimes clean. People, seriously, when you sweat on the floor, you wipe it up--the towels are free! I tried two of the advanced classes and they degenerated into inversion contests which is really not my thing...like I said, more an aerobic gym than a yoga place. Overall, I would recommend anyone considering heated yoga give this place a try...it may end up working out for you. It's a nice studio, just not for me. read more

I have been practicing yoga for about a year. I have tried several studios, and Yoga Belly is my favorite! The studio is heated, and most of the classes are power yoga. You will sweat a lot and get a great workout. If you're new to yoga (or exercise, in general), their "yoga belly" classes are a wonderful way to get started. Their prices are very reasonable, and they offer great promotions. They treat their loyal customers well - their monthly unlimited packages are a great deal if you practice at least a few times a week. But the BEST thing about this studio is that it's a COMMUNITY. The owners are wonderful. Will is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He is so happy and positive. He seems to remember every client by name. All of the instructors and staff are very friendly. A few of the instructors know that I've struggled with various injuries (non-yoga related) this year, and they often ask me how I'm doing. When I first injured myself, they suggested variations for poses that were too painful for me to do. They are always available after class if you have any questions. As others have mentioned, there is no bathroom in the studio (it's just outside the studio and is shared with other tenants of the complex), but there is a curtained-off changing area and Yoga Belly provides towels, filtered water and good coffee. If you're looking for a challenging workout in a welcoming, friendly environment, you should definitely try Yoga Belly! read more
