Yoga district is a great local DC chain offering yoga classes for an affordable price. The staff has been very welcoming and the instructors are great and will give you pointers on how to improve your form. They have all your normal yoga equipment from straps, blocks, and you can borrow a mat if you don't have your own. They have several locations all over the DC area. They also offer special classes and outdoor classes as well. read more

I have been coming to this studio on and off for about two years and couldn't love it more! I have tried a few other spots in DC but so often found them to be too boutiqu-y and overpriced. This place always hits the right mark of authentic and welcoming. I definitely recommend that people newer to the studio try out classes from as big of a variety of instructors as possible. They each have their own unique style that they bring to class and I enjoyed figuring out which instructors are best for my varying moods and goals. I initially was looking to break and sweat so gravitated to specific people. I now am getting more into yin yoga so have some new favorites! read more

I am usually very active and enjoy trying new workouts and different gyms. However, once I hit about the second trimester of my pregnancy I realized that I need to find something a little more low key, and more appropriate for the duration of the pregnancy. I am so glad I came across some reviews about Yoga District's Pre/Post natal Yoga classes! I have only gone to the Bloomingdale location, but I know they offer this class at some of their other spots as well. I have been going to this class when I can, and I really enjoy it! Aside from the physical benefits of yoga I have enjoyed meeting others who are pregnant or who have recently had a baby. The first couple minutes of class are spent on introductions and the participants have an opportunity to vent about pregnancy related issues. Taylor the instructor is great; not only is she a certified yoga instructor, she is also a dula, which makes her more than qualified to teach this class and understand the best exercises to incorporate. read more

I started taking their online Zoom classes, after attending a few in person classes a few years ago! I recently signed up as a new student, and got a two class pass, which was an awesome perk to try out their socially-distanced options! I took Edgar's Restorative and Gentle Yoga class and Monica's Slow Flow Yoga 1-2 class. Both classes were amazing, with Edgar and Monica allowing participants to turn video on/off as desired, but offering great alternatives for each pose and checking in when possible. I'm excited to continue with more classes - they have extensive offerings each day, and even some 1:1 possibilities and some outside, socially distant classes as well! I've always highly recommended Yoga District for their in-studio classes, and if you're looking for a yoga class at home, definitely check out their offerings! read more

Looking to re-establish myself in the Yoga world and this was a great place to start! I absolutely loved the two classes I tried out so far and am looking forward to trying out some more. My favorite yoga district location (of the ones I've tried!). The Bloomingdale studio is bright and offers a large, more traditional space for yogis to practice in than other yoga district studios. Classes tend to be larger at this location, but the space much more easily accommodates large groups, especially during their weekend morning classes that tend to be crowded. Teachers that I've tried at this studio have all been excellent and there is a great variety of yoga styles and levels on offer daily. Highly recommend mixing it up with different teachers until you find the one that is best for you! Yoga district's locations all offer a "no frills" yoga experience - teachers or interns are the ones checking you in for a class, so doors open 15 minutes before class or when the previous class wraps up and there is no "reception space" open at all times. They are CARD ONLY and you can rent a mat for $2 if you forget to bring one. I love that they offer a 2 for the price of 1 special for new students so you can try two classes to get a feel for two different instructors or two different locations without a big investment. Classes are ~$12, which is reasonable and cheaper than other studios. The only downside of this location is that it only houses 1 class at a time, since the space is only a large open room with a bathroom in the back. They offer a great number of classes throughout the day at the location, but if you miss a class by a few minutes, you've got to head to a different location or wait an hour for the next one! Not a major issue, but most yoga spaces offer 2 spaces and 2 classes simultaneously. Right off Rhode Island, parking can be a little tough late after the work crowd gets home and early mornings when cars are still parked from overnight. Lots of bike parking outside the studio makes biking an easy option to get to your workout! read more

I've taken a few classes here and really like it, especially Sunday morning yoga with Arielle. Like other Yoga District locations, staff and teachers are warm and welcoming. The studio is just that--a studio--with a small restroom, cubbies, and storage space for mats, blocks, blankets, and straps. No other amenities, which is fine. But it's good-sized, and I adore the paper lanterns. I tend like Yoga District, and this location is no exception. read more

(Note - Yoga District has a different listing on Yelp for each location. I wrote one review for all three locations and choose to post it here since it had the least reviews of the three studios.) Yoga District sets itself apart from other yoga studios through their yoga outreach. They run a non-profit, Yoga Activist, which supports yoga programs for trauma survivors across the country. If you have no heart and don't care if someone brings free yoga classes to people in homeless shelters, prisons, and numerous other communities that could benefit from yoga, you will at least enjoy the class prices. Yoga District is the most affordable yoga studio in DC. You can drop in for $10, get a 10 class pass for $88, or go for the unlimited monthly rate of $77. If that is still too much to pay, you can fill out an application to pay less. They have three studios and they all have their own pros/cons. I think the Dupont studio is the nicest, but you have to walk up five flights of stairs basically walking over sweaty hot yoga students that are passed out on the steps (there is a Bikram studio on two floors of the building). The Bloomingdale studio is the largest, though it is not that close to the metro. The 14th St studio is my least favorite, which is funny since I usually end up there the most because the location is the most convenient to where I live. Favorite teachers: Jasmine, Matsimela, Bernie. Some of the other teachers just did not stand out at all. They offer a good variety of yoga classes, meditation, and yogalates. I think some of their classes were at a lower level than other studios (for example: some of the 1-2 classes should be listed as 1). But, overall I am a fan and think you should check them out! read more

I was worried about going to this location in not the best part of town but surprisingly the one block radius around this studio is completely gentrified. Except for the convenience store next door to the studio that has a half dozen men standing outside chatting. Hence I understand why there's no bench outside the studio to wait because see the studio is one room so you can't even enter the building until the class before yours is over, you have to wait outside on the sidewalk (not ideal in the rain). The studio reminds me of a Miami hotel, a large room with a high ceiling, surrounded by white walls and 1 wall covered in flowy white curtains. From the ceiling hangs white paper lanterns. That creates a wonderful backdrop for the candlelight yoga class. The candles are simple but real flames and the ceiling lights are dimmed while music is played. I did think the room was a bit chilly with the ceiling fan on, I'm used to doing yoga in heated rooms. I tried my first Prana Flow class with Alexandra and really enjoyed it. They have a water cooler with cups available and mat rental is only $1. It's about a 4 block walk to the Shaw metro. read more

The stereotype is that as a guy, I'm supposed to dislike yoga. As a guy who has done lots of weight lifting in the past, this stuff is supposed to be pointless. The honest truth: Yoga is tough!! I loved every second of it. Yoga District was a perfect way for me to take a first class. I didn't get any weird looks from the other participants, the instructor was very cool, and the class that I took was challenging yet simple enough for my uncoordinated self to follow along. $10 a class, early Saturday morning? The people were very happy to know that I signed up online. Everyone was doing their own thing so I didn't feel out of place at all. Good place to go for the beginners. I found heaven right here on earth!!!! Best yoga studio and only $10 a class, or even less if you buy a package. It's also clean. Furthermore, I have attended this studio many times and have tried all of their teachers. Not once have I been disappointed and what makes it best is each class has a different energy depending upon the teacher, but always in a good way. I'll warn you though, if you need complete silence to focus, this might not be the place for you. There are a few drunks who hang out by the liquor store next door and lots of passing traffic. The neighborhood can sometimes get a little loud but by me being city girl, I'm used to blocking out noise, so it doesn't bother me at all. read more

I just did my first ever yoga class at Yoga District Bloomingdale. I also have a twisted ankle that made me double-think even going. Worry not! Arielle made sure I could modify every position that my ankle couldn't take. I thoroughly enjoyed the "workout" (which I feel entitled to call it that as I broke a sweat)! I have been practicing with Yoga District for a year and change now. I have to say they do it right. I go to a lot of the different locations, but since I can't Yelp the company as a whole it seems, I figured I would review the location I go to the most. I love the teachers and the overall energy. I practiced for many years in Santa Monica with this "famous" instructor and that "famous" instructor, which was fine... but Yoga District has the best teachers I have practiced with by far. Knowledgeable, intellectual and humble. Personal favorites are Tricia, Aqeel and Gracy. If you are a newbie or are super advanced there is a class and a place for you. They make it easy to find the right class with their website. I also love the flexibility of being able to go to whatever class I can get to with the 10 class pass. Recently out of a relationship and decided yoga would be my way to cope (I am a weight lifter). The first day in my new single life I came to Jess' class and my life was completely changed. This woman is so modest yet knowledgeable and says all the right things. I am still a beginning, but feel extremely comfortable coming to a level 2-3 class under her instruction. I got a voice mail from Jasmine at Yoga District to explain the problem about not notifying me of the studio move and class cancellations. The "explanation" was that Yoga District's email list is so huge that they didn't want to tell everyone that the Bloomingdale studio was moving and that the MindBody software has quirks completely unrelated to Yoga District not notifying registered students when a class is moved or cancelled. The MindBody software quirks supposedly explained why my cancelled classes that had been credited were uncredited shortly after I posted my yelp! review. In fairness, they were credited back again when I complained to them. I think "I'm sorry, we're doing the best we can" (see response from Yoga District below) is a huge improvement and am glad they got there, so I added a star. read more

My experience with Yoga District started off shaky - but with some excellent customer service, I will definitely say that I am a fan. I'm not totally new to yoga, but the time and life changes that have occurred between then and now have been substantial enough that I'm pretty darn close. I bought the new-comer's two for one pass and first tried the Restorative Yoga class on Sunday afternoon - I don't know that it's what I was looking for, but given how many times I nearly fell asleep, it perhaps was what I needed. The problem came with the second class - billed as a beginner class, it felt like anything but and I was so uncomfortable that I left before the end of class, close to tears. My first reaction was that I don't belong in yoga but I'm glad that I eventually emailed YDs feedback address. Jasmine responded quickly and thoroughly addressed the situation, including speaking with the instructor and modifying his schedule to not include beginner classes, offering a three-class pass and suggestions of which instructors might be a better fit. I gave yoga another shot last night and it went wonderfully - class was challenging, yet Kate M. was very good about offering modifications to meet the students where they were. It felt very welcoming and I will be purchasing a class package so that I can attend this class regularly. For any other beginners thinking of trying Yoga District, Kate was fantastic and Jayanti and Paul A. were the other teachers that Jasmine suggested - haven't tried class with either of them yet, but I will. read more

Some of the classes and teachers here are great, and some not so much. You will get a good stretch/workout, but some of the classes are actually not yoga. Yoga is when mind, body and breath align. As soon as you have added music or added your own stress to the practice (teachers bringing in their stress) then you have taken away from the practice of yoga. It's a shame because this studio is right across from my house, and now I refuse to go here because of loud pop music. Some teachers are also not knowledgeable about leading meditation when they do so. read more

I'm new to Yoga and Yoga District but I have taken about 7 classes there now and I feel very comfortable singing its praises with a 5. This place is a little slice of yoga heaven in my neighborhood. I love its mission. The price is right. The teachers are compassionate and unpretentious. I haven't felt awkward or like I'm slowing others down because I'm less than pretzel-like yet. In fact, the environment is very supportive and friendly. I bought an unlimited pass on impulse when I realized I didn't bring $10 in cash for my second class and wanted to meet the $15 credit minimum. I was a little worried having only experienced one of their classes but no regrets so far (and it is so cheap for students). I have a feeling I'll be practicing here as long as I'm in the area. read more

My first Yoga class ever!!! So exciting!! I dropped by here randomly- I was staying with a friend who lived on the street adjacent to the studio. I looked up and saw that they had a class for $12 that day, and I said hey! May as well try! They have multiple locations but this one is very convenient because I live in the Shaw-Howard area! You can drop in or you can do a monthly/yearly gym membership, not sure how it works with their multiple locations, but I think its pretty flexible.. depending on your finances you can pick an option. Oh my gosh I love Yoga District. First, the price absolutely cannot be beat. I promise you'll fall in love enough to go at LEAST twice a week and make the monthly package worthwhile, but if you can't make that commitment drop-ins are still affordable at $10/class. I love that they have studios all over the city- and with such cheap drop-in classes I can talk friends into coming along. The only time I've taken a class I didn't like at Yoga District was with a brand new instructor, I think someone who'd come out of the teacher-training. It was a bit boring and not very informative, but since I have a monthly pass I don't mind going to those every once in awhile. Everyone's new once! The regular instructors are GREAT. They come from varied backgrounds and have individual styles, from very hands-on (unless you request otherwise) to not-so-much, from gentle voices to strong, from spiritual to more strictly athletic, but they're all encouraging and have something to offer. If you really want to perfect your form, I highly recommend Paul's class. He leads a very simple flow and will adjust your pose to improve your form and, when possible, experience greater depth. He also has a soothing demeanor and gentle kindness that helps you feel safe to try new things. As far as improving my practice, Paul's class has been incredibly beneficial. I lived in Bloomingdale and loved having this studio right down the street. The studio is simple but very comfortable. You will want to show up EARLY even to the less crowded classes, because there isn't a lobby and the instructors themselves sign you in. Now I live on Capitol Hill and I'm thrilled to have the new studio on H St!! So far I've taken classes with Kat K, Matsimela, and Hannah. All three instructors were fantastic. Kat K has a background in Vinyasa. She has a confident voice, warm energy, and a fun but smart style. Today the flow focused heavily on hip alignment and deep, slow breath- I feel like I formed some good habits. Matsimela's background is in Sivananda yoga. His class last week offered a nice, deep, restorative stretch and we spent a lot of time on the floor. Hannah's background is in Dharma flow and her tone is very sweet and spiritual. I've been to the Bloomingdale, H St, and Dupont studios. I love the first two, but Dupont is a bit cramped. I still go on the weekends sometimes. Highly recommended weekend plan: Go to bed at a reasonable hour on Friday (because you went out Thursday anyways), wake up early Saturday and go to Paul's class in Dupont, go to the Zoo early in the morning while the animals are awake and going crazy, get lunch at Lebanese Taverna. read more

I love Yoga District with a passion. It is a down to earth and welcoming studio with helpful and friendly yogis. The classes are $10 and some of the money goes toward Yoga Activist, YD's activist non-profit that provides yoga to underserved communities (trauma survivors, homeless individuals, mentally ill individuals, etc.). They have the cheapest classes in DC that I've seen, $10/class, with some free classes offered (meditiation, chanting, self-defense classes). They also offer discounts on their monthly yoga pass to non-profit workers, teachers, social workers, vegetarians/vegans, etc. My favorite classes are yoga 1-2 and flow yoga 1-2, though they offer a wide variety of classes, especially on the weekends. This studio is one big and beautiful room, which makes practicing in it very enjoyable. The location is about a mile from any metro (15-20 min walk from Shaw or New York Ave metro), but accessible by biking or buses. read more

I've been taking classes at Yoga District for a just under a year and I really like it. A few pointers: - Studio locations: I've been to the I St, H St, Dupont and Bloomingdale locations. The first three are all in old houses and cute, but the studios are small, oddly shaped, and can get really hot, especially in the summer. The Bloomingdale location, is actually shaped like a yoga studio, and it's on the ground level. There's tons of space, and it actually seems like the other students are more friendly, as well. -Pricing: I think Yoga District's pricing is really reasonable. I purchase the 10 class pass and generally have no problems using it up. They're really helpful about helping you transfer over unused classes, too, and understanding if you cancel and want to get that credit back. The pricing is especially reasonable when compared to other yoga studios in the district. They do want to make sure it's accessible. -Instructors: The instructors are great. They're all pretty young and very nice and helpful. The ones I've been to the most are Fiona, Cara G, and Kate A, and they're all great, but even the others I've been to here and there, they're great and down to earth. I've only had one kind of hippy-like instructor, but some people like that, so really there's someone for everyone. - Signing up: I think the online system is great, but it can get really packed. They say they save 2 spots for walk-ins, and they generally do a great job of fitting people in even above that, but it can get very crowded. I've noticed over the last year that the after work classes have gotten really popular, to the point where if you want to reserve, you need to sign up at least 3 or 4 days in advance. The good thing is you can always sign up and then cancel up to 2 hours in advance if you change your mind. If you're willing to wait a little longer, the later classes seem to be less full. When I go to 8:00 classes they always seem to have plenty of room for you, which also means the instructors can be more hands-on. Overall, I really like Yoga District a lot, and it's all but replaced my regular gym routine. I just moved to DC a few months ago and scoped out Yelp reviews for studios before my arrival. After reading all of the reviews for Yoga District, and considering the Bloomingdale studio is one block from my house, I made my choice. I haven't regretted it. I read a few negative reviews about the space, or being over-corrected, or not being spoken to at the end of class... I think most people come to class to practice, not take in cush surroundings. The studio is always clean and has all the necessary amenities (blocks, blankets, water, even spray to clean your mat at the end of class). Teachers ask whether students would like to be corrected or not before class, and whether anyone has any injuries. I think it's also important to know yourself, and your own limits. Teachers are there to help, but are not mind readers. If something is too much, lay off or ask for less adjustment, right? I've found almost all of the teachers to be very engaging, interested in each student making the practice their own. There are sooooo many different teachers (and really, I've liked almost all of them), so not liking the way one teacher taught or failed to thank students after class (side note: I love Aqeel and do recall him thanking students and addressing them after class, though those things are really of lesser importance than the class itself for me) should not prevent a person in search of a great studio from returning for a different class. Also, I've been to classes of all levels. The yoga 1 classes are certainly at a low enough level for beginners. I even brought my 64-year-old (non-athlete) mother to a class (yoga 1-2), and she did great! She just rested when necessary, and the teacher was super helpful. I've only been to the Bloomingdale studio, and have found Steve, Paul, Gracy, Nichele, Aqeel and Jasmine to be my favorites so far. After years of living abroad and moving a lot (dropping in at random studios or just practicing on my own), I'm happy to have found my yoga home. I've been to various YD locations, and have never had a bad experience. The teachers are kind and respectful, and the students tend to follow their example in this. I do not recall ever having a poor experience with either an intern or teacher being judgmental or snobby. I think they make an effort here not to condone that sort of behavior. The price is great, when compared to other local studios--$12/class, with free and by donation classes offered on occasion. This is infinitely more affordable than other studios in the area. There are various types of classes offered by Yoga District; not all of them are for me, but I appreciate the variety and flexibility in times offered. If I try a particular style of yoga that I'm not fond of, I simply make note of that, and try a different type. My only complaint is that I wish they offered more classes beginning in the 7:00 hour (specifically at the Bloomingdale or Columbia Heights locations) though, I'm sure there's a practical reason why they don't. read more

Got a new student 2 class pack for $12 and so far so good. The studio is no frills but it does the trick. The teachers seem good but so far haven't done some of the back bends and inversions I'm used to from other studios. Stay tuned as I check out more classes. The location in bloomingdale is perfect for me to get to after work. They open the doors 15 minutes before class and they don't have admin staff during Non- class times in order to help keep prices reasonable. Also notable: no paper towels or disposable cups used here! They give you real cups and towels to them clean and launder. If you like that kind of thing. read more

Beautiful space, small and clear, mellow vibe, a great space for yoga and meditation. All levels were welcomed and taught to. You can come with experience and be stretched or come as a beginner and learn in a non-intimidating environment. They rent yoga mats for $1, yay! I've taken classes from a variety of teachers with different styles at Yoga District Bloomingdale, and all were engaged with the students and clearly dedicated to the practice, well-versed in both the physicality and philosophy of their chosen style. I brought my partner with me to his first yoga class ever, and he liked it so much that we've made it a weekly thing. So glad we have such a lovely studio within walking distance of our house. I also appreciate that the above is a part of their political philosophy. In addition to being committed to affordable yoga, they train yoga instructors to teach underserved communities and do outreach to trauma survivors, homeless shelters, youth in detention. With multiple locations throughout the city, they are definitely the most convenient studio in DC. And you really can't beat the price of $10/class. Convenience and affordable factors aside, the teachers at Yoga District are awesome. They keep their classes fun, light and welcoming to all levels. And they also keep the hippie spiritual talk to a minimum, which I definitely appreciate. The classes are definitely challenging so I am usually walking funny from how sore I am the next day after class. If you want a good workout, I'd recommend: Steve's Astanga class, Aqeel's classes, Hannah's classes, and Alicia's classes. But from my experience, all their teachers are pretty good so it's hard to go wrong. read more

Every teacher I've had at this location has been excellent. Each teacher is unique, so it's best to go in with an open mind and be willing to try multiple teachers. Personally, I like the variety and am willing to do any class, but you can also find that teacher whose style is just right for you and sign up for their classes. Punctuality is important, and popular times will fill up early. I think they oversell popular classes sometimes to the point of ridiculousness. Also, the bulk class pass expires after 3 months, which is normally fine, but if life happens, you're out of luck. The location is super convenient for those of us in Bloomingdale and Shaw, but the drawback here is that there is street noise that may interfere with your moments of meditation. It is what it is, living in the city, but worth noting. read more

The studio and instructors are five stars, but the practice of sardining as many students (35! In a 700 sq ft space!) as possible to the point even a forward fold is difficult isn't good. I'm glad people are excited about yoga, but capping last minute sign ups or walk-ins would really improve everyone's practice and experience. read more

What can I say that hasn't been said already? I love Yoga District! I have practiced at Bloomingdale and 14th Street and I really enjoy being at both places. The staff members are always accommodating, helpful, and friendly and the space is always clean and bright. As a novice, I am sort of insecure about my abilities but the instructors are always there for proper adjustments and they are very encouraging. My only wish is that they would offer more Pilates and Yogalates classes throughout the week. read more

I've been to two classes at Yoga District in Bloomingdale, bringing my grand total of yoga classes ever to two. Both were Level 1 classes, but it did seem like they expected to have a good base of yoga knowledge. Although I've never been to an organized class, I've watched some how-to videos on YouTube - which totally saved me. If I was actually starting as a total beginner, I would have been completely lost - instead of only slightly confused. The studio is a nice, calming space. However, classes are fairly large (both classes I attended had about 30 people); again not ideal for a true beginner. I love this studio. I few months ago I moved to DC from Boulder Colorado and quit going to yoga thinking it would be too expensive. YD is a wonderful find. All three studios are great, but this bloomingdale location feels like a little community. The classes are usually 75 minutes long, which is perfect for getting in the right mindset at the beginning of class and really having enough time at the end to cool down and process what just happened to you :) The flow is never the same twice and there is always time to work on each and every part of your body. Yoga District is a wonderful combination of dedicated, thoughtful, and comfortable that's allowed me to push myself from never doing yoga to attending my favorite classes at least 2-3 times each week. One of the best aspects of Yoga District is the variety of classes and teachers, and you should try a few to find the ones that you enjoy. It's also really nice that with a monthly membership you can go to any of the studios. To note a few of my favorite classes/teachers you should visit: Andrew H.'s yogalates class will leave you bathed in sweat and questioning your own stamina, Marci is both introspective and patient in how she explains the poses, Emily R. will make you work muscles you didn't know you had... I can't list all of the fantastic yoga teachers I've met here. The bottom line is that Yoga District is a lovely community with a multitude of great instructors. read more

Love this place ... it's a non profit neighborhood yoga studio with multiple locations. I love the space in Bloomingdale.... opened airy with plenty of room to practice. The types of classes are varied and the instructors are al fantastic ... classes for everyone from beginner to super advanced and a pace that begins at slow and relaxed to that hard core yoga practice... one just has to select the right class. I've been coming here for a while now and I've never been disappointed. What I like about the classes is as long as one is participating the pace doesn't matter... someone in front may be curled like a pretzel and you may be in a 1/4 of the way to it pose and that's ok... it's still yoga!
