I used to feel incredibly intimidated about yoga studios and taking classes with other people but one day I decided to overcome my fears and give it a shot. I went to Yoga from the Heart. When I first entered, I was greeted by warm and friendly faces which helped ease some of my nerves. They helped me get my equipment (yoga block, blanket, strap, etc.) and guided me into the room. The studio wasn't filled with young, buff bodies as I expected, but instead a mix of elderly people, young adults, middle-aged adults, men, and women. All ages and walks of life united for one purpose: Yoga. It warmed my heart knowing that all these diverse individuals were taking time out of their day to dedicate a portion of it to themselves and their wellness. The class was led by Lynn Burgess owner of Yoga from the Heart. She had a cool, calm, and collected demeanor about her. She seemed eager to share her yoga practice with us. What impressed me most was her knowledge of the body and how the bones and muscles all work. She would walk us through each pose, letting us know exactly how to align it or customize it to ensure that we were getting the most out of the poses and practice. She made sure that we found what felt right to us, she never pushed us to get into a pose, she always eased us into it and gently carried us over to different poses. Through her class I learned that I was missing some critical information that an at-home yoga practice just cannot offer. I learned different ways I can improve my practice. I learned why the yoga blocks, blankets, and straps are helpful for those that may be a novice, like myself. I learned a lot about my body and how to personalize each pose to improve my practice. At the end of the class I felt absolute and total relaxation, as if my body was frozen and the class helped me defrost it. It was a feeling that even my at-home practice could not replicate. I felt like my entire body was worked through. Yoga from the Heart made me feel at home, it was a remarkable first studio experience that helped me get rid of the fear of doing yoga with others. If you also have the same fear as I did, I highly recommend you buy that one-class pass and head over to Yoga from the Heart. This studio knows how to make you feel comfortable and at-home. I've been going to Yoga from the Heart for two years now. My daughters and wife have practiced it on and off for years. I finally decided to add it to my exercise regimen because I'm just not as flexible as I used to be. Yoga from the Heart came highly recommended and so I gave it a go. I took the Beginning Yoga class taught by Lynn Burgess, the owner and master yogi and I'm hooked. I try to go every week now. I don't know how I was lucky enough to stumble into the absolute best yoga studio in Sarasota but I did. I've sampled other yoga studios when my schedule requires it, but I keep coming back here. Lynn instills her 1 1/2 hour class with an excellent combination of spiritual, cerebral and physical. And she manages to do so with the elegance, wit and grace of a true master. She's been doing this for years (I encourage you to read her bio). She and her small team are genuinely interested in making you as good as you can be or want to be. I'll admit, it was awkward for me in the beginning because I'm used to my routine workout which involves weights and cardio which I can do in my sleep. But Lynn and her teaching assistant(s) help you find the right pose, position your hands, feet and rest of the body correctly and overall get on with it. I soon learned that it's not a competition and you progress at your own pace. You're sometimes cajoled into wanting to do better but never shamed into it or made to feel like a newbie. It takes years to really feel proficient at yoga. Lynn's admitted more than once that it took her 6 years to get her heels to the ground in the "downward dog" position. I'm now one of the Tuesday night regulars and new people pop in all the time. I'm no pro at this, but now I am able to pop into a headstand (using a wall for support!) at the drop of a hat. I feel so much better. I know how to treat those occasional aches and pains, particularly lower back, that come from sitting at a desk and staring at a computer all day. I now stretch every day and meditate quite often as well. And, yes, I'm here to tell you that my flexibility and posture has significantly improved. It really opened up a new world for me. I moved to the area from out of state in June and was worried about finding a yoga studio comparable to the one I loved back in Chicago. Well, I found Yoga From The Heart and could not be happier! Steve and Lynn are such positive, caring instructors, I've already brought my sister in and plan to tell anyone I know that is interested in yoga to try this studio. They supply all the props you'll need (including the basic mats and blocks). They are friendly, welcoming and truly care about making sure you have a great experience. My boyfriend and I just had a private lesson with Lynn (he was nervous having never tried yoga before) but Lynn could not have been kinder to him making sure to adjust her teaching to accommodate some old injuries he has. I met Lynn in February 2018 and took several private yoga lessons with her. It was a wonderful fun filled experience. Lynn is extremely knowledgeable about physiology and restorative yoga positions to get the body going and stretch the necessary muscles. She knows how to individualize her instruction to your personal needs. She is warm funny and caring which made the hour sessions fly by! Her cost for individual sessions was very reasonable and well worth it. She also expanded my knowledge and confidence in the yoga experience as I am new to yoga.
