Trying this location as it's in the neighborhood. The space is very small and they really pack you in, which makes for a "not so relaxing" and chaotic experience. It would be great if they cap at a certain number to create a better experience for clients. The sound bath (Sunday class), was *exceptionally* painful for my ears. It's a tough technique to master, and maybe the instructor was having an off day? I would have left, but I was not close to the door and didn't want to tread over folks to get out. The instructor saw me in pain, but didn't stop by to speak to me or show any consideration. It was unfortunate, and something I'd expect of most yoga instructors. read more

3.5/5 - Convenient yoga studio in the Potrero neighborhood. Purchased a pass of 5 and attended a variety of classes. I liked yoga instructors Michelle, Zoe and Elise - their classes had a good pace, vibe and poses and they provided modifications to make it easier/harder. The class maxes out at about 10 people comfortably and I enjoy that it's a smaller class but there was one time that it felt tight for space. My biggest knock off the rating is from a morning class I attended where there was a lot of hair and dust around me which was distracting. I'd suggest the studio does a vacuum before each class. Tip: the heater is at the far end of the class (by the changing room) which will blast on and off throughout the class so I wouldn't recommend setting up there if you run warm. read more

A friend of mine recommended Mayu to me when we were talking about yoga studios closer to this side of the city we live on that practice more breathing and traditional yoga flows. Located at the tippy top of one of the hills in Potrero Hill, it's quite a nice leg workout for me to walk 20 minutes to the quaint and cozy little studio. The space is very simplistic and aromatic with some natural diffusers or incense. Luckily, Mayu is available on ClassPass and I was able to book and attend two sessions to date. There typically does not seem to be too many yogis in the classes I've been in, about 6 people maximum and more than enough room for everyone to space out at arm's length, which is a huge plus. I've taken classes with Gizella and Sara, both of whom are great instructors and lead you through a slower paced flow, allowing you to truly focus on positioning yourself properly and your breath with each movement. It's definitely not the type of studio where you break out into a sweat, it truly is a relaxing experience and a chill flow. The only feedback I have is to be a little warmer with the students here, as I feel both instructors were a little distant upon interactions and on a couple of occasions, the class was canceled without much notice an hour before. read more

I came here through ClassPass, and as a beginner at yoga that has only done a few classes at different locations, I have to say that this was my favorite experience! While it didn't feel like too much of a workout, it got my blood flowing and was nice to learn how to properly fit in breathing with my movements. The instructor Michael took us through many different poses so that we were continuously moving and there wasn't much down time between poses. As a beginner, I really liked that he would come over to help demonstrate/guide me into proper form. Michael made the environment feel so welcoming, and his talking throughout the session was both soothing and motivational. There was light music playing in the background that helped set the tone. Namaste Very intimate way of doing yoga and I honestly enjoyed every second of it. The classroom itself feels like your doing yoga in your own home. It's very cozy and warm lit up with only candles around the room. The community feels closer and connected together with every pose. The yoga instructor Michelle was so calm and collected. She made the class so welcoming with her ability to kindly teach you on the side with anyone who was struggling with a pose. She gave kind encouragements and empowered you to do more if your body was up for the challenge. Yoga Mayu has always been known for the quality of its teachers. Gisella herself may well be my favorite teacher in my 20+ (...on and off....) years of practice. There's a focus to her classes that's very compelling. And her adjustments are magic--it's as if you can feel the proper alignment in her fingertips. Yoga Mayu has curated a wonderful space in the heart of Potrero Hill to begin or continue your yoga practice! It's conveniently located on a corner and (surprise surprise) has accessible 2-hour public parking across the street. No meters here! The interior itself is simple with white walls, clean cherrywood floors, and large private windows that still allow for plenty of natural sunlight. This creates a wonderful and peaceful ambiance to settle into. The class capacity would be pushing it's boundaries to say it'd fit 20+ inside. I see this as a good thing as this creates a setting of true intimacy between teacher and student. Additionally, they have plenty of yoga pillows/props/blankets for practice and a large bathroom doubled with as a changing room for any immediate needs. However, where Mayu really shines (as any yoga studio should) are with its plentiful selection of professional and skilled teachers to select from. In particular, I've been practicing under Annabelle's Vinyasa Flow and it is nothing short from being outstanding for my novice skill level. I was extremely nervous at first not knowing if I'd be able to keep up with the pace or maintain the proper poses as long as instructed. To my delight, I quickly learned Annabelle's guidance was beginner friendly when we would reach specific stretches that I was comfortable in, but then would offer the advancement of its form if I inclined. Some (to my own surprise) I was able to do and push my limits in a healthy way. While others I learned that it was literally beyond my reach and to maintain the original pose. She also would compliment individuals who were doing well and would kindly guide others when necessary. Lastly, I really enjoyed how Annabelle began and ended her sessions with us; this included moments of self appreciation, gentle formations to ease in and out of, and various meditations that left me feeling strong and elevated by the end of class. One thing to keep in mind about Mayu is there are no mirrors to validate your form. This in turn forces the teacher to further focus on their students throughout their practice and also may require the student to do a little more searching for what targeted pose is. Otherwise, this sweet studio and their awesome teachers has a lot to offer. This is a great little yoga studio. I tried my first class today via Classpass and I felt calm instantly walking into the candle lit studio, plus refreshed walking out. You need to bring your own mat and towel, but they have cubbies, blocks, and blankets available in the storage area towards the back. My 4pm class only had 5 people in it. But it was great because Kathyrn, the fabulous instructor, was able to give personalized adjustments. Highly recommended :) read more

I enjoyed coming here when living in Noe. Yoga Mayu has friendly staff who are skilled and ready to instruct or help when appropriate. Yoga Mayu is an absolute gem! This is the best yoga studio I have been to in San Francisco, and quite frankly, the only one I want to practice at. The space itself is clean, simple, and beautiful. The ambiance is calm, pleasant, and unpretentious. Every teacher at Yoga Mayu is well-qualified and experienced, and they each bring a different perspective and specialty to their classes. I've taken many different classes here, and continue to be impressed with the quality of teachers and collective knowledge and expertise at this studio. The classes are a great size (maybe 30 people at max capacity, usually less), which means you actually get personal attention from the teacher (not an assistant/other student) and the moderate class sizes allow each teacher to to get to know the students and actually help them continue to progress. This is also a great studio for beginners or those new to yoga as their Yoga 101 classes are very thoughtful and really establish a strong foundation. Yoga Mayu is an oasis, and a small, female-run local business which I am proud to support, especially given the exceptional quality of the services provided. Well, you know me, I am picky about my yoga experience. With ClassPass, I decided to try this yoga gym in Noe Valley, SF. Noe Valley is a quaint part of town. I had to Lyft around. This one was worth it. Nicole led the group and she was very helpful and attentive. I am not perfect at yoga, but I like to perfect my yoga poses and routine. This one seemed to be for intermediate yoga practitioners and it's a serious group. She starts with some words and meditative practices and then it gets into an hour and fifteen minutes of yoga. It had a lot of variety and basics. I didn't know everything, but yoga routines are always gonna change. Nicole could help out because I looked like I needed it. We used various equipment for yoga like blanket, blocks, and sandbag. I didn't know if I could make it through the whole time, but I ended up okay. Yoga practitioners should always try to be encouraging, but you know me, I need special attention at times. This yoga gym is homey and comfortable. It is one room on one floor. I would try it with ClassPass. Noe Valley is cozy. read more

I started going here just over a month ago shortly after they opened their Noe Valley studio. This studio is just adorable. Between the quaint location in Noe Valley to the relaxing environment inside, I feel exactly where I should be when practicing. The floor is padded, so going into inversions or arm balances feels a little less scary than on a hardwood floor. I've taken class from a handful of teachers here, but my favorites are Katie Cosgrove and Traci Burleigh. I take class with Katie almost every Saturday mornings (great way to start my weekend). She's intense while also being very un-intimidating. She adds a cardio element to the class too through fast flowing transitions, so you get your heart rate up and sweat. I have also taken class with Traci and recently had a private with her. She is a great teacher! During the private she asked me what I felt like working on. I've been practicing forearm stands for months and feel like I haven't made progress. She worked me through a lot of shoulder strengthening moves and then put me up against the wall to practice. I felt like I learned so much in that 1 session. Overall, I love this studio and am so happy it's so close to home as Noe Valley has been waiting desperately for a yoga studio! read more

I love this studio. It is clean, inviting, and safe. I especially love how there is a cubby in the front for shoes and one in the back --away from foot traffic-- to leave your personal belongings. Brenna is a excellent teacher! I have been taking classes with her for a few weeks. She teaches a class that makes sense to my body and feels safe. Brenna knows how to pace class as well to keep everyone engaged in the movement and explains how to modify the pose for various levels. I would recommend this class to anyone new to or experienced with yoga. read more

I accompanied my sister to a pre-natal yoga class, despite the fact that I am not in the family way. The class was nicely paced, and while being fairly easy, seemed to offer a good balance of stretch and strength. I'm planning on returning to check out the lunch time flow on Fridays, so I will update this review if/when I take additional classes! Every time I come to this location they have credit card issues and the staff is not friendly. The small space isn't that great either with low ceilings. They show no effort to help with check-in and don't seem like they care that you make the effort to be there. The studio is small but clean and inviting, and I really enjoyed the class I took, "Mellow Flow," which is sort of a combination between vinyasa and restorative (perfect for my still-recovering knees). I live in the neighborhood and have been attending classes at Yoga Mayu for about a year and a half. The teachers are fantastic and take care to make sure you are doing proper form. They are also able to tailor their teaching styles to the skill level and energy level of the class each time and no one gets left behind of conversely feels unchallenged. The studio is also adorable and well-maintained and convenient to public transportation and everything you would want on 24th street in Noe Valley. Finally, on a personal note, the owner, Gizella, permitted me to do a work exchange when I was in between jobs, so I was able to continue my yoga practice and take classes in exchange for cleaning and helping out around the studio - for which I am very grateful! This is my favorite place to practice yoga in the city. All of the instructors are experienced and knowledgeable. The space is nice, clean and calming. I have done the long term boot camps and I take drop in classes regularly. I have consistently had a great experience at Yoga Mayu. I do miss the Yin yoga classes they used to have. But otherwise, I can't think of a single thing I do not like about Yoga Mayu. read more

Upgrading to a 5 since it's among the better studios in SF. The instructors are solid and knowledgeable. Studio space is clean and well laid out. There's cubbies to store your shoes in the front and a back room with supplies and to tuck away valuables. Roomy practice area but generally smaller class sizes. For days when I forget or don't feel like lugging it around, the mat rental and towel rental prices are super reasonable at only $1. The vibe is non judgmental and chill. There's mix between a handful of regulars who seem relatively dedicated and people casually trying out yoga. Classes have just the right level of spirituality, with an opening and closing om, and sometimes a short story to begin. Everyone has something different they're hoping to get out of their yoga practice. Yoga Mayu is a great place to take a thoughtfully sequenced class and get more attentive instruction. While Brenna is great at suggesting harder variations or fuller expressions of poses, I haven't noticed the intensity or difficulty level of the classes increasing that much. read more

But I think the main differentiator for me is the impressive quality and style of instructors here compared to other studios. Many yoga studios (especially through ClassPass) can be hit or miss, but Mayu is the only studio where I know I get consistently high-quality flow and alignment focused classes with great music to inspire movement.
