An omakase and hand roll bar, down an alleyway? Sign me up! This spot is a hidden gem that brings the Japanese vibes of hidden streets loaded with small bars and eateries, right to the Fulton Market area of Chicago. We're talking fresh fish being flown in from Japan, well crafted drinks and chef experiences that let you remove the thinking process to just sit back and enjoy. They also have a really good happy hour! The service is not only quick but great as well! Intimate, hip and relaxed all in one.

Been on my to go list for the longest and wanted to catch their Happy Hour: Tuesday - Thursday 11 AM - 2 PM Located in West Loop which has such a difficult place to even find parking Anywho, I'm so glad we caught their HH menu and not full menu because these handrolls adds up. $6 selected handrolls I got the hamachi truffle and spicy tuna both were pretty okay. Service was mad mad slow. I was ready for next Handrolls but chef was just kinda standing around. Usually when I think of lunch, I think of the lunch rush where people prefer to be in & out and get back to work. I wanted to get another Handroll but the first two took so long I kinda just left it as that because I was still hungry and 3 would have been perfect. My bil got the miso soup and it was disgusting. Overall just ok & make it to HH for the deals.

I came here after work for their hand roll happy hour. This is the perfect place to dine by yourself! Amazing service, I appreciated how this restaurant is quick to seat you and bring out both water and a wet napkin to wipe your hands after eating each roll. My favorite hand rolls are the negi hamachi and sake cucumber -- both are super refreshing and tasty! The cozy interior really makes you feel like you've been transported to a sushi bar in Japan!

    A5 Wagyu Premium Handroll

Came here on a Thursday night at 7pm, there was another couple that walked in with me, we both ended up waiting a good 15-20 mins before getting seated at the sushi bar. The place is quite small, most of the seating is around the sushi bar with some booths around it. Looking at the menu I was a bit torn between doing the Omakase or just ordering their handrolls à la carte. I ended up just ordering a bunch of handrolls, as I was hungry, but I think if I were to do it over again I would of done the Omakase, since my bill was just 5 dollars short of the prix fixe Omakase offering The spicy tuna and truffle hamachi hand rolls were fairly good, not mind blowing, but solid and not outrageously expensive. The Wagyu, while visually appealing and the King Crab Premium hand rolls were not worth the price in my opinion, both were tasty but not the orgasmic experience I would expect based on their price.

This was AMAZING!!!!! The Happy Hour is on Tuesdays through Fridays from 5-7pm, and you can make a resy online and still be counted for happy hour. All the rolls are $6 each. You can either sit at the counter where you can watch chefs make the rolls, or off to the sides where the tables are. We each got 6, and my ranking is: 1. Truffle hamachi - my friend Carly hates a "hipster roll" which has lots of additional ingredients besides the fish itself, but I'm ngl I love a hipster roll lol. This one has truffle oil, avocado, and crispy shallots, and the flavor was explosive and addicting. 2. Spicy salmon - your classic spicy salmon with quality fish 3. Blue crab - this had cucumbers in it, tasted just like a California roll! 4. Spicy tuna - your classic spicy tuna lol what is there not to love? 5. Negi hamachi - this comes with green onion, made it super fresh and one of the rolls where you can really taste the fish at its peak 6. Sea scallop - I'm surprised this ranked so low for me. It was still amazing, and this is the roll to get if you like superrrr fresh tasting seafood. So buttery, but I think the pickled veggie components distracted from the scallops themselves. Don't come and expect a fast meal though. They go in rotations and give you one roll at a time, so everyone in the room who still has ordered rolls left will get theirs before you. Aka round robin style!!

    - good food, good ambiance, great service - reservation made and recommended - looking forward to our next visit! Anniversary dinner called for some tasty handrolls with pookie! We have had their sandos, and had a craving for handrolls, so it only made sense to return here. There was good service with recommendations and of course delicious food during their happy hour. I had gotten the negi hamachi, spicy tuna, hokaido scallop, truffle hamachi, and zuke sake. All of them were delicious and tasted fresh with crisp nori and were served with the rice still warm. My favorite was probably the negi hamachi... can never go wrong with those! My girlfriend had gotten the negi hamachi, blue crab, sea scallop, and truffle hamachi. Hers were quite delicious as well, no notes! The crowd favorite was the negi hamachi, delish. Great dinner, great experience. We had some good recommendations and they were great about taking our dishes as we ate. Everyone was kind through the meal and I love the small intimate space. Their happy hour was at a perfect time and had delicious options, I definitely would love to come back for the omakase experience. I know it's a small space, but the single restroom and timing of it all made us feel like it was never open, but not much that can be done. Even though we made a reservation, we did have to wait a bit before being seated which was annoying. Still looking forward to the next visit!

This is my favorite hand roll bar. I recommend going during happy hour because hand rolls are only $5 each and there are no bad options. My recommendations are: Blue crab hand roll Truffle hamachi hand roll And if you can handle spice, I'd recommend the spicy salmon hand roll For dessert, don't skip out on the Sandos. The ambiance is lowkey chill, with elevator music. LOVE!!! Plus the service is always great the last three times I've been here. Highly recommend for any sushi lovers P.S. I recommend booking reservations directly through their website rather than Google, as Google showed no availability and was unreliable.

I had such an amazing experience here! The service was excellent--friendly and great. We got seated at the bar which you can see all the hand rolls being made. Coming here right at 5pm really makes a difference because that's when happy hour starts and after that it gets busy. The hand rolls were absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the truffle hamachi hand roll, which had the perfect crunch, and the spicy tuna, which just melts in your mouth. The drinks were also super refreshing, making it a perfect spot for a girls' night out. I ordered five hand rolls, and every single one was packed with fresh ingredients and great flavor. To finish off, we tried the uni cheesecake, which was definitely unique--not your typical cheesecake, but still a tasty surprise! Overall, this place exceeded my expectations, and I'll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend! We will definitely be back for their sandos.

We've had this place on our list for a while now, so when we saw there was a Happy Hour from 5-7pm, it was our sign to finally try it out. Actually kinda funny how we ended up coming here sooner than later: we started a happy hour elsewhere thinking that was going to be our dinner plan for the night, but our experience at this other place was terrible, so we decided to leave early and came here instead just in time for the start of this happy hour. Immediately from the time we were seated at the outdoor window bar, service already blew us away with how attentive and welcoming all the staff was compared to where we came from. The happy hour consisted of $6 handrolls and $7 drinks. We ordered 4 handrolls each: truffle hamachi, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and spicy scallop, along with their toki highballs. The handrolls were so fresh and tasty and the highballs were delicious and made so well. Of course, it was my main mission that whenever we were to finally come here I was going to order their strawberry and matcha cream sando no matter how full I was from the main food. That sando I would eat over and over again. Overall love this place, the chill vibes, and the very friendly staff! Wish we went here sooner, but at least now we have a new go-to spot for whenever we crave handrolls, highballs, and sandos!

    Egg Salad Sando

I've had Japanese Sando sandwiches at two places in my life: Konbi Sandwich Shop in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles, and today at Yokocho here in the Fulton Market district of Chicago; both places were sensational, but ..........Yokocho just felt better. These sandwiches are so unique that you cannot compare them to any Jewish Deli, Subway, Jimmy John's, New Jersey Mike's or any Italian Markets making sandwiches. There is no similarity, competition or association to any lunch time fare, when it comes to a Sando sandwich. That being said, I had the most unusual and excellent tuna sandwich that was made with spicy tuna, spicy mayo, and arugula. My wife could say the same about her distinctive and quite beautiful egg salad sandwich that had spicy mayo, Arugula and kyukappa (a pickled cucumber). These sandwiches were not only delicious, but works of art - (see posted pictures)! I also had this magnificent Aemone Salad that had spring mix with Ginger carrot dressing - I Loved This Salad! Yes, finding such a good restaurant is the total success of Chicago Restaurant Week. I plan to hit 4-6 more Chicago Restaurant Week establishments this February.

I came here for Chicago restaurant week. The yelp reviews made me curious to try the sandos because the restaurant had a high rating. It's a really cool restaurant with an open concept where you get to see the chefs make the hand rolls in front of you. The miso soup was a bit bland but filled with lots of fresh seaweed. The hand rolls really stole the show for me. I will definitely come back here just for the hand rolls. The seaweed was crispy and made for a perfect bite. The rice was slightly warm in contrast to the cold fresh fish. Some of the best spicy tuna I've had. Truffle hamachi had plenty of truffle flavor but the fish was a bit over powered. Strawberry matcha sando was fluffy, slightly tart, and the bread was perfectly chewy. Yum!

Hand rolls . I'd say 4-5 a person is the right amount for a meal

Loved this place! Intimate modern vibe with great service and excellent food. Their happy hour from 5-7 during the week most nights brought me here - great deal as each hand roll is 6$. We each had 5 which was the perfect amount. Every roll was delicious- particularly loved the scallop hand roll. Shared the matcha strawberry sandwich for dessert which was worth the splurge. Great service too. The only thing preventing me from being a regular is the parking situation ( not easy - ended up using valet next door which was not cheap).

We tried: Chicken Katsu Sando - katsa sauce, red onions, kyukappa Spicy Deviled Eggs Sando - spicy mayo, arugula, kyukappa Spicy Tuna Sando - spicy mayo, arugula Unagi Donburi There's very few spots to get Japanese sandos in Chicago and this spot is the best so far. We really liked the flavors of the arugula and onion slaw in combination with the proteins. Chicken Katsu was delightfully tender, probably thigh meat. The three sandwich set is a very good lunch deal for two people. Unagi meat was decent but the rice was properly cooked and fried shallots were delicious. Service was good. Not a fan of the dim lighting and weird hours. Limited seating inside.

Unlike some places that just make variations of existing classics (except for items specifically so named, like the Old Fashioned or Espresso Martini), all of their cocktails are unique and interesting. Time for a punch card? I ordered the Maximillian the Imposter. While I'm not typically a fan of banana (except for banana bread), I thought I'd step out of my comfort zone, and I wanted to try something 'flaming'. Flaming it was! The preparation of the drink involved a surprising amount of fire. I initially thought this was just for show, but no, this translated into a noticeable smoky flavor. Beyond that, the drink was strong, not overly sweet, and an all-around delight. There was one bartender on the night I was here, and while it was busy, I was still able to get my drink in a reasonable amount of time. I also feel as though they have reasonable prices, especially considering the quality and the market rates. King of Cups gets busy, and for good reason: they are an all-around phenomenal place, from the drinks to the vibe, and everything in between. A guitarist sits somewhere against a brick wall and plays music lightly but energetically. Service is friendly from start to finish and smiles are on everyone's faces. The menu is pretty easy to understand. You can get a three-course meal, or you can get each entree à la carte. You have two fondue candles in front of you, one for the cheese and dessert, and the other for the oil. We chose the three-course meal, and it was delightful. We started with the cheese appetizer. You get a basket of bread and fruit and we chose the seasonal cheese to dip. The oil for our meat was then left to heat, and we received a massive platter of veggies and meats for our main course. We chose the option for all selections of meat and seafood. After trying all the meats, I would opt for the lobster and shrimp. You can also substitute the oil for a broth. I would like to try the broth for next time. In one of the shakers, Gejas makes their own meat spice mix. It's recommended to put on the meats and even the desserts. It's a mix of tangy and savory and was a great compliment to the meal. We then chose the seasonal dessert, a white chocolate with vanilla cookies. Fruit, marshmallows, and churros to dip. We were so full by the time dessert came, but we enjoyed a few bites and took it home. The three-course meal, with five types of meat, came with about 10 pieces of meat. It doesn't look like a lot of food, but it truly is, with the apps, veggies, etc, your stomach will be full when you walk out of here. They also start the entire course with a mixed salad (so technically it's a four-course meal). It was very fairly priced, as well. Initially looking at the prices, you may think it's expensive, but it truly is a value with the amount of food they serve. This was rated as most romatic restaurant in Chicago. Its ambiance gives you the romantic feel, the guitarist adds to the atmosphere, and the staff is professional and friendly. This really was a great place and we enjoyed our time and meal.

Not many Michelin starred restaurants can pull that off on a Monday, but Esmé always seems to have energy. This place has become one of our most reliable favorites. They change the menu a few times a year in conjunction with rotating local artists, and the restaurant itself feels more like a refined art gallery than a traditional dining room with white walls, clean lines, simple and elegant. Last night was no exception to their usual excellence. The experience is really anchored by Chris Gerber, a longtime Chicago hospitality pro, and his team. They are flawless. This is true hospitality in every sense of the word. They usually keep two signature dishes, and for good reason. The caviar supplement sounds odd on paper, but in your mouth it is absolute perfection. The cod sounds simple, but it is anything but, rich, decadent, and always one of the highlights. Everything new on this menu was also outstanding. Every course had beautifully balanced sauces that made sense with the dish, and the presentations were creative without being gimmicky or over the top. The plating always ties in with the featured artist in a way that feels thoughtful, not forced. One tip. Be careful when choosing your beverage pairing. We did not read closely enough and ended up with the more inventive pairing that included cocktails and a beer. It was fun, but afterward we wished we had gone with the higher end wine pairing instead. Bottom line. Esmé remains one of the most consistent Michelin starred experiences in Chicago. To echo several of the reviews below, the salad was awkward to share and scanty, the soup was good but the bread served with it felt like an afterthought, the sturgeon wasn't anything special though the sauce was quite good, and we are pretty sure the cut of beef was not wagyu or if it was it was not cooked the right way. The beef was the most disappointing part, I couldn't even chew through all of it. The add-ons were the best part - pasta was great and our dessert was delicious. But the rest of the meal was unfortunately mediocre. Hoping that others have a different experience with the regular menu!

Great dinner here tonight - had the mussels, burger, and octopus. All were exceptional. The drinks…read morewere also very good, and the service was awesome. Great meal overall.

Chicago Restaurant week. I reviewed various dining options in search of a good place for dinner…read more Reddit gave me some ideas. I'd never been to Willow Room and liked that they had a four course dinner menu, with items I liked. I was able to make a reservation for a Saturday night at 8:15pm. PARKING Parking on Halsted on a Saturday night can be a nightmare, and it did take a minute to find street parking. North of the 1800 block is busier because there are several restaurants within a two block radius. Side streets are permit parking after 6pm. Meters on Halsted are $2.50/hr. ATMOSPHERE Willow Room was pretty packed. We had a reservation for 8:15pm and my party of two was seated right away. The restaurant features a full bar, dim lighting and is nice and roomy. They have banquette seating around the perimeter, in addition to tables in the middle. SERVICE Our server, who was very nice and accommodating during our dining experience, came by and gave us our menu's. I had already decided on the RW menu and after review, my friend was interested in the Beef Wellington (not on RW menu). Our server informed us that normally the whole table had to order off of the RW menu if one person does, but said she would check with the kitchen since this was the last day of RW. Luckily, we were able to proceed with ordering from different menu's. FOOD I ordered a raspberry Cosmopolitan. I'm a Riesling/Moscato girlie, but I tasted the Riesling and didn't like it. RW dinner was priced at $60. I ordered: First Course: Caesar Salad (Typical salad, was good) Second Course: Mussels (Tasted fine, came with a baguette) Third Course: Short Rib (Could've been slightly more tender and better seasoned. I've definitely had better. Wouldn't order again.) Fourth Course: Orange Ricotta Donuts (Donuts were very good. Three were served, a few more would have been more filling.) My friend ordered a glass of Pinot Noir and: Truffle Fries (Fries were very tasty. I would order again if I went back.) Beef Wellington (The breading was buttery and very good. The beef could've been more seasoned. I wouldn't order.) Key Lime Pie (Was not sweet and had no taste. When our server came back and saw it was uneaten, she offered to take it off the bill. It should be removed from the menu altogether.) The busboys and server were very attentive. Our water glasses were always filled. OVERALL The atmosphere was nice, our server was great. Of all the food we ordered, I would order the truffle fries and Cosmopolitan again. I did leave full and did take my leftover Short Rib to go. Main dishes needed more seasoning. I would dine here again and try a different menu (brunch/lunch), or Happy Hour if they offer it.
