I decided to have sushi for my bday lunch at work. Ordered with DoorDash and the online experience was very easy to use and navigate. I just wished you knew what was fried, grilled, etc but if you are a sushi lover who understands the menu. Great option here! The service again was online but very user-friendly. Sushi primarily served by the piece. So it makes it a great option for selecting multiple pieces of variety, balling on a budget and just pure easy eats. After trying the concept at Umi on Jackson, I was excited to try the Grain and Sea approach! After an office move put me in proximity, the first lunch at the new building was had here. This is the point where I once again confess that I have a strong disdain for imitation crab sticks, and am not of tempura-something in my maki. While there were some options without, these were few. That said, there was a fantastic variety, and I was still able to put together a tray of rolls that I enjoyed, with a handful left for a future visit. Especially as compared to their colleague on Jackson, I was extremely fond of G&S putting the explanations/ingredients on the placards. With Umi, I found myself asking the staff what is in everything - here, it's all spelled out. G&S also has three kids of soy sauce: low sodium, regular, and gluten free, IIRC. What truly makes G&S shine is their staff. Everyone I've interacted with was very friendly and welcoming, and made an otherwise mostly self-service experience pleasant, and not cold. When we come to the question of prices, it isn't exactly cheap, and being by weight, it adds up quickly. However, given the area, I feel their prices are in line with the market - the per/piece price appears to be ought the same as a spot where you'd get a box of 8 of the same. Final verdict; Grain and Sea likely won't be a daily or weekly tradition. However, I definitely plan on returning often enough that Yelp will consider me a regular! Really enjoyed grain and sea! I came here for dinner on a day I wasn't too terribly hungry, but had wanted something relatively light. The way they work is that you get a container and pick up individual sushi pieces and they charge you at the end by weight. I got four pieces of sushi which cost $9, and a side of miso soup which was $4. I ate and was very comfortably full, and the quality of the sushi was fairly good in my opinion! I particularly liked the salmon pieces. They have plenty of tables inside, and the bathrooms are decently clean so it's a nice place to get out of the heat and sit for a while as well. I was not a fan of this place... I do hope them the best though... I came in around 11:30 and was expecting a busy crowd, however it wasn't busy at all, I was actually the only person. The rolls looked dry like they had been sitting there for awhile... they had plastic covers to help prevent this and lifted it when I came in... The sushi variety was lacking- a lot of it had shrimp tempura or shrimp, which I'm allergic to. Quality was also lacking. Too much rice not sure if it's a way to add weight to the box, but the big gunken style sushi was mostly rice. I quickly ate this and left to another sushi place. read more

Not sure why this place barely has any reviews because it went viral on social media. Super unique concept of which you get to create your own sushi box without committing to the same pieces (unless you want to). There were a variety of nigiri, inarizushi, and rolls which were all FRESH, buttery, and tasty. I believe it's $1.25/oz and the total came to about $40 with a drink. I put together my own selection - green bean, cucumber, sweet potato maki and then a corn inari and a spicy tuna inari and finally an ebi tempura nigiri and plain ebi nigiri. Great food!! Really love the concept, you Dont have to eat full rolls, you can pick how many pieces you want from each roll. And all of them are so, so good. The service is great. I think the owners come out to see how we are doing, really fun and nice. The place itself is a great location in the heart of downtown. It's more grab your food and go back to work. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted and they explain the process if you're new. It's fairly simple-everything is clearly labeled with allergens marked and it is VERY clean. I felt extremely comfortable eating from here. They have an impressive vegetarian selection and I tried a little bit of everything. They offer edamame and seaweed salad as side options (after you get your sushi-not included in pay by weight system) as well as a few bottled beverages. They have all the variations of soy sauce you could want as well as wasabi and ginger and a mayo based sauce too. A few tables are available inside and all looked clean. No notes. This was a lovely surprise that I found when I was running errands downtown. It is buffet style, choose the pieces you want to create your own box. They had a great assortment of rolls, so I didn't have to choose just one, but sampled a piece from a bunch of different rolls. They charge by weight, and each piece came out to around $1-1.50 per piece. The staff were super helpful and friendly. The place itself is casual and very laid back.
