Three stars for the skewers. The curry cheese plate and the cabbage pancake four stars though. Been wanting to try this place out for a while for the skewers but it was a little underwhelming. The cheesey curry and the cabbage pancake (can't remember real name) were the real highlights. The skewers flavor weren't bad, but they were pretty damn small for the price. The waitress even said if you hungry order something else cause the skewers definitely want fill you up. For a bar/tapas place I'm surprised they have no happy hour. I'm not sure why I don't come here more often. Maybe out of sight out of mind, or I'm not completely overwhelmed with the place. I like the fact its a Japanese grill restaurant of an assortment of proteins. I would say pretty much all the grilled tapas style options are very flavorful such as the grilled beef w/ teriyaki, beef w/ wasabi is a must, shitake was a winner, quail eggs wrapped in bacon and throw in the lamb chop w/ balsamic sauce would be dishes I would repeated order. The menu also provides ramen options, pork bun bao, and an assortment of poke bowls. I think what doesn't bump this place up to 4 stars for me is the music piped in is too loud for my comfort and service is a bit scattered. I'm giving this establishment a one star, due to witnessing an appalling situation by the manager (Will) involving bad customer service. I'm not here to speak negatively about this establishment as a whole, because the food, service, and ambiance is spectacular. It's specifically the manager who dampened the experience. Last night, between 9:00 and 9:15 (March 21st) A young woman walked in for a bite to eat, giving her order to the server, and conversing about the menu. Will, the Manager, or so he says, calls to the server while behind the sushi bar numerous time saying the kitchen is closed, and no longer serving. One fact to keep in mind is, the weekend closing hours for Yokushi Robata states 9:30 via Google. He approaches the now seated customer, and says they're no longer serving. She politely responds their weekend hours state they close at 9:30 (true), and Will is in full refusal to serve. She asks his name and for a manager. Will states his name and says he's the Manager. The customer continues asking if there's anything quick to order up, at least an appetizer or something, and Will still refused service. He drummed up long drawn out excuses, like mentioning the Pandemic (which I understand, but in this case, you can no longer blame the Pandemic at this point since the state is fully open) , and blaming the kitchen. Will also kept reiterating, "If the kitchen closes, I can't do anything about that." and walked off. Will did not want to serve this woman. Will did not properly manage. Will created a problematic environment. The young lady speaks to the server again asking for their corporate office information. The server calls Will over again. While the customer is trying to ask a question, Will blows up rudely interrupting her saying "OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO!! JUST DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO!! MY GUYS HAVE TO GO. I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THAT. I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHATEVER THEY WANT TO DO." Pointing out the many errors here, from what I've gathered, Will, the manager, was rude, inconsiderate, incompetent of properly resolving the conflict, incapable of improvising from a management perspective, lacks identifying error on his part, and refused to take accountability for his actions. How does, the manager, whose job is to manage, blame their kitchen for the reasoning to not serve this woman? You're the manager. The hours state 9:30 closing. The restaurant isn't even full. Is management not cross trained? Everything about this situation was unacceptable and could have been easily avoided. To the owners/corporate entity over Yokushi Robata: Indeed, your restaurant is awesome. Coming from a former bar manager working in the service industry for 10+ years, we all know, or should know, bad management can eradicate a business, especially with social media and camera phones involved. I hope you all will take the proper preventative measures for this to never happen again, and I wish you the best in the future. read more

The seating was also not very ideal(at least at my table), the chairs didn't have backs on them. Is my favorite Poke place for the last minute dinner before watching a movie at Edwards 24. I always park in the theatre garage and then walk to Yokushi Robata. The inside decor is pretty characteristic and it feels like to be in Japan. The Poke is very fresh and delicious. It is worth to mention that anytime I go here, the 90% of people present at the restaurant are Asian. That makes me think this place have good food. I always take the Poke plates, especially the one that contains salmon and Avocado. They recently changed the menu. Now you can finally see how your order looks like. I would definitely suggest Yokushi Robata for a dinner + movie night deal. read more

It's a late review but we need to write a review about Yokushi Robata! The restaurant wasn't big and wasn't small can fill up 10-12 tables. Well organized! We came last week for the first time and we weren't disappointed at all. Only one waitress but not a big deal since she knows what to do and handle the rush. Thumbs up for waitress! Spicy ramen was really really good. Rainbow poke bowl was reasonable price. Their grill wasabi beef skewers is one of you Must try. The manager was also friendly and kind. While the food was great, when asking about which dishes included an ingredient I'm allergic to, the employee responded "I don't know, so if you ask about different menu items I'm going to have to go back there and talk to the cooks about every dish you ask for. Other people with allergies pick a dish they know they can eat and order it every time- so I suggest you do that." They made it seem as if I was really inconveniencing them. I loved all our skewers! The veggies were great and well seasoned, the meats like chicken thigh, pork belly, soft shell shrimp, were all perfectly cooked. Would also recommend the cheese corn. Takoyaki and okonomiyaki were good but not great--maybe slightly off on the batter ratios, but well cooked. Overall, it's not bad Japanese robata-style food, but I've had better. The prices are affordable though, so it's a good place to satisfy a craving. Food: -Pork belly: 1/5 I would not recommend this. I've had pork belly yakitori before, and this didn't have a fattiness. -Unagi: 3/5 This was okay. It was probably one of the better yakitori skewers we ordered. I thought it was a bit too saucy vs more like a delicate flavor. -Chicken Thigh: 2/5 This was okay. It tasted more like chicken breast than chicken thigh. -Okonomiyaki: 2/5 The pancake was not made flat or thin enough, so when it was cooked, it didn't get a good crispiness to the outside edges. The bonito or fish flakes didn't taste fresh as well. They usually almost melt in your mouth, but this one didn't. They had all the right ingredients. They just didn't execute it well as I would like it. -Takowasa: 3/5 This was actually decent, but I've had it better at another place. -Hawaiian Poke Bowl: 3/5 This was good, but definitely not a Pokeworkds. The sauce was a bit heavy, but this is overall a good value for only $9.95. Service: Service was okay. It was more of a "transactional" service experience if I had to describe it. We basically sat down, and then we gave her our order. Then, she brought out our food, refilled our water once, and then gave us our check. Not much extra conversation, but that was fine with us. This place is so underrated. I really wish more people knew about this place so that I wouldn't be nervous for it to be out of business. Either that or maybe I usually come during the deadest times! Anyways, think of Japanese Tapas when you hear someone mention Yokushi. But this place seems to be as authentic as Japanese will get in Houston. I still haven't tried their main dishes (such as their ramen or don), but their poke is so fresh and I have no complaints. Not to mention it comes in such a big main dish bowl that you might need to ask for a to go box. Their tapas that have tried are to die for! Especially the scallop on shell!! If you're eating a dish with rice (such as ochazuke), I would suggest to make sure that the waiter doesn't take away the left over juice that's left from the shell, split your rice onto a separate plate and pour that juice onto that separated rice. Came here because the wait at oishi was way too long . I have to say this place is good for bar food and drinking but ramen and etc were just okay. Would give it 4 stars but my octopus special that I ordered took forever :( so everyone was half way done eating when mine came. The only reason this wasn't a 5 star experience is cause the main dish, the okonomiyaki, was super thick and not quite cooked through- it was delicious but I couldn't eat the middle. BUT! EVERYTHING ELSE WAS SPECTACULAR AND JUST bursting with flavor! The restaurant is spotless and has a casual dining layout. Food comes out pretty fast, save for the okonomiyaki which takes about 20 mins. My sister and I came mainly for the okonomiyaki, a wonderful Japanese savory pancake made with cabbage, mayo, fish cake and a choice of meat- this particular restaurant does theirs with pork. IT. Eric R. desired ramen and I had bookmarked Yokushi, so we stopped here before driving to Austin. When we walked in, the server tried to put us at a table right in the doorway, and it was a bit chilly outside, so Eric R. asked to be further away from the door. Then we scanned the restaurant and realized there were no chairs, just stools. We both have bad backs so we asked for a booth. She tried to get us in the corner 2-top but we both wanted to sit along the wall so we sat a two 2-tops pushed together. I started with water and Eric R. got the hot genmaicha tea. The menu looked like someone stamped the words rather than printed it (or used a broken printer) because I could hardly read the words. There were appetizers, poke bowls, donburi, ramen, and robata yaki options. We scrolled through yelp photos and the poke bowls had a ton of kale with them which was unappealing to us. Some of the combinations were a bit strange (yellowtail, jalapeno and corn) and these were not customizable. One of the poke bowls was $16.95-yikes! Eric R. stuck with the ramen (miso tonkotsu). The server disappeared for awhile after we ordered drinks, so it took awhile to place our initial order. I ordered an octopus salad and three robata skewers: chicken tsukune, quail egg, and beef with yuzu wasabi and seaweed. Eric R.'s ramen had ground meat in it rather than chashu. My octopus salad came out very quickly and was okay - the sauce was a bit slimy. The robata was tasty enough - but nothing wildly exciting. The server had to replace the drinks from the back - there were no water pitchers for refills. It was very chilly inside so we asked another server to turn up the air - he said the restaurant used a fan to distribute outside air so he could not turn up anything. It was in the high 40s/low 50s outside and I was under a blasting fan so you can understand why that was rather uncomfortable. The restroom was very cold as well and the women's had no purse hooks (a pet peeve). Overall, the menu was not that exciting and the atmosphere or no chairs and outside air means I would not return (or suggest people rush in here). If it was this chilly in the winter, I bet the summers will be excruciating too. read more

We decided to randomly eat here as we passed by. It was a very pleasant experience. The spicy tonkotsu ramen was actually spicy! Usually I have to ask for extra chili oil at other places. Yokushi Robata - Yokushi Don (pork belly over rice) - Poke Near Me - Houston, Texas

I went to Yokushi Robata during their soft opening on a weeknight. It looks like a typical Japanese izakaya and serves yakitori (skewered meat or vegetables), tapas, ramen, poke bowls (Hawaiian sashimi bowls over rice - think chirashi), and donburi (rice bowls). I ordered a hot green tea w/ roasted brown rice ($2.50) to start off. This was just a cheap tea bag thrown in weird-tasting water; I don't recommend getting their tea. I ordered a few small tapas including the garlic edamame ($3.75), the Goma-ae - boiled spinach with sesame sauce ($3.50), and one chicken breast skewer ($1.95). The garlic edamame was good, but the Goma-ae was pretty bad. They served it cold. The chicken breast skewer was okay; they served it with teriyaki sauce poured in the plate, so you could use it to flavor the meat. I also ordered a poke bowl. I went with the Ahi Tuna which was made with tuna, mango, cucumber, seaweed salad over rice for $9.95. It was pretty small, and they add a lot of green leafy vegetables over the rice (seems to be shredded kale). My friends all ordered the other poke bowls, and their bowls were also full of this shredded kale. I wish the bowl was a bit bigger, but what can you do. Overall, I left still pretty hungry, so you'll need to order a lot to be full. I wish their tea wasn't a cheap tea bag and that their Goma-ae plate was done better (preferably not served as cold). I still want to try their ramen and donburi bowls, so I could see myself coming back here when they are fully up-and-running. read more

Nice and well decorated store with lots of Japanese stuff. I gave 5 stars for service since it was fast and took only 15 minutes for food to come out. But foods are not worth the price. For 5 of us, we ordered total 7 skewers, 1 bowl of rice and 1 dish of udon. We wanted to taste first and if we were still hungry, we would order more. However pork skewers was very dry. At first I was skeptical about going to a place specializing in just skewers, but had to give it a try since there has been a lot of buzz about it. Jellyfish Salad (4/5) - sauce is flavorful with a good kick. Ika Geso (5/5) - seasoned really well and fried perfectly. Tako Yaki (5/5) - plenty of octopus inside and not full of flour like other places. Fried perfectly. Teriyaki Avocado (4/5) - grilled so that the avocado gets nice and soft and teriyaki compliments it very well. Lamb Chops (6/5) - because it's that good. Perfectly seasoned, tender af, amazing sauce! Quail Egg (4/5) - basic quail eggs lightly grilled with seasoning. Only reason for 4 is because I love quail eggs. Otherwise, it's just quail eggs. Chicken Meatball (3/5) - was not my favorite. Seaweed and mayo drizzled on top was delicious. However, the meatball itself lacked some seasoning. Beef w/ Teriyaki and Garlic Chips (5/5) - highly recommend. Not too much teriyaki that overpowers the beef. Cooked to perfection, medium rare, and juicy. Bacon Wrapped Tomato (3/5) - not an amazing dish, but still good. Only reason for a 3 is because I'm not a big fan of tomato. Girlfriend likes tomatoes and gives it 4/5 Chicken Skin (5/5) - usually chicken skin is not very good at some places and I would never give it a 5, but the skin here is delicious. Not too crispy where it's dry and still has a little bit of fat. Pork Belly (3/5) - probably our least favorite meal of the day. Was a little bit on the dryer side. Didn't stand out as much. Hawaiin Salmon Poké (4/5) - probably the best poké in town and I've tried numerous places. Salmon and all ingredients are very fresh and made to order. Only reason for not 5/5 is because San Diego Poké is unbeatable. Cremé Brulee (5/5) - an order comes with black sesame AND green tea. Sugar on top was perfectly torched and not burnt. Green tea has strong flavor, as it should. Both me and my girlfriend don't like black sesame, but we ate all of it because it was so good. All in all, this place is amazing and will definitely be coming back. Sit at the bar because the chef is really nice and will guide you through your meal. Note: make sure to tip the chef too, not just the waiter. read more

Found this tiny place near my hotel when visiting Houston, and had dinner there. The inner decoration was typical Japanese bar style and I was seated along the window. There were a wide variety of skewer choices on their menu, ranging from veggies to beef, chicken, pork and seafoods. I tried several of them, unagi, teriyaki beef, shrimps, corn, chicken gizzards and asparagus. I liked unagi and the sweet and juicy corn. I also had the matcha shortcake for dessert, but it turned out to be small in portion. Quick service and relaxing vibe. Overall a nice place to enjoy some Japanese foods. read more
