This place is extremely over hyped! I went for the first time today and as soon as I walked in there was a smell of oldness and mildew. The menu is very lengthy and hard to look through everything to make up your mind on what you want exactly. I ordered a "skillet" with pancakes. The pancakes were clearly frozen and heated up. The sausage and bacon tasted like the bottom of a skillet. I also had to beg my waitress for a refill on WATER, YES WATER! She literally walked past my cup multiple times! Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, for sure. I always love having a huge breakfast and then choosing to eat light during the rest of the day. This past Sunday I had worked overnight and not got much sleep. Although I always feel guilty skipping church, I knew that my attention span wasn't going to be long enough to sit through a 2 hour service, so we decided to hit up the Farmer's Market and go to breakfast. I never really went to VIPs more than a few times, as it wasn't really my scene. Now that the owners have remodeled and given it a hipper vibe, I feel that any type of person could come here and enjoy it. The floors are all hardwood and the booths have been touched up to make this look like a more modern version of VIPs. On to the food. Their menu is huge and have way too many choices. I prefer a menu with a few options or else I end up just staring at it for days and days not being able to make a decision. I was between the stuffed biscuits (biscuits stuffed with an egg and some other stuff) and the skillet. I ended up going with a skillet and I'm glad I did. It was so delicious. I can't remember the name, but it had gravy, pieces of sausage, mushrooms and peppers - with eggs of your choice on top. It was really good and HUGE. I ended up eating half of it and saving it for the next day for breakfast. My husband had the greek omelette and I thought it was better than mine. I love feta though and this had a lot of it! Our waitress was very attentive without being the overly smothering kind that just makes you want to scream "we said we're okay -- LEAVE US ALONE." She showed up enough to let us know that she was there to help and let us enjoy our food. The only real complaint was that their OJ was way overpriced. I ordered a large for $3.00 and some change and it was the smallest glass I've ever seen. I'd stick with just water next time. Ok. Let me just say this place is much nicer inside now. It was a greasy spoon and then it changed. I was not happy about the Ruben I had here. When you make a Ruben, it has wet kraut as part of it. You put toast down on a plate. You put meat down on that toast. You put kraut on top of the meat and the top slice of bread down. That keeps the wet kraut from destroying the bottom toast. This did not happen for me. I got a severely floppy soggy bottom bread. They wanted to fix it. But I don't really trust anyone with food I send back. So they brought me a new piece of bread. Un toasted. Kinda funny. Not the experience I wanted to pay ten dollars for. So, I grab my proverbial "berries" to you. Stopped by this place for a quick breakfast on my way out of Kankakee! It was a large facility and I was seated immediately. The waitress was sweet and kind- offering plenty of time for me to look over the menu. I ordered the cinnamon roll pancakes and they were so tasty! It was hard to order just one meal because there were endless food options. I ordered a few salty sides to go along with my pancakes and the price was great! The waitress did spend a significant amount of time talking to one table (15 minutes or more) and I was left waiting for my bill throughout that time. Not the most memorably delicious food you'll ever eat, but you get a lot of decent quality food for what you pay for. Anything with eggs is always very 'meh', but you get more of them for free - and unless you say otherwise they drench all your broad-based products in mounds of butter. But otherwise it's alright. This was my first visit to Yolks & Berries and it definitely won't be the last. I have a 4 yr old with anaphylactic (potentially deadly) food allergies to dairy. We also can't do eggs or gluten due to her allergies, so we're very limited on places we feel comfortable going to. Today was New Year's Day and the place was packed. I was glad I brought her something to eat although we did order her berries and bacon. I talked to our waitress about being cautious on how the bacon was cooked because of her severe allergies. A few moments later, the owner, Ambrose, came out to discuss our daughters specific needs and asked if he could make something special for her. After several trips to our table discussing options and ingredients, he was satisfied. He said he has young family members who also have allergies, so he understands what it's like not being able to eat out places. When our meal came out, I couldn't have been more impressed! Ambrose served my daughter her plate and it looked exactly like the picture she picked out on the menu. It was made special for her. He made gf/df toast covered in strawberries and strawberry syrup sprinkled with powered sugar. She was so excited! And she ate it all! As far as the rest of our order, I have no complaints. All meals were prepared exactly as requested, everything was delicious, and we never felt pressured to to leave (I've been to restaurants that are more interested in flipping the table to make money versus letting people leisurely eat and converse). I can't wait to go back. I'll definitely be promoting Yolks & Berries to other allergy-sensitive families. I'm glad we have a place like this in our community. read more
