The first time I went, I got a sandwich. It was really expensive and really small. I do like that they cut the meats and cheeses for you fresh and charge by weight, but the base premium is super high. My sandwich was $10 and had like one slice of cheese and two slices of meat. It tasted good though; if you're willing to spend that much on a small sandwich, you won't be disappointed! I had been wanting to go back to try the coffee and get some work done because it's a well-lit space and the tables are very spacious. I have to say, though, I was really annoyed by my experience. Here's how the conversation went down: Me: I'll have a drip coffee please Employee: What size? Me: Small. And can I get decaf, please? Emp: Sure! For here or to go? Me: For here I was getting my money out, not really paying attention, and then she brings my mug over and tells the cashier I got a decaf Americano. Me: "Oh, do you not have decaf drip?" Emp: "No, this is an Americano, is that ok?" Me: "Um, yea, that's fine I guess" DO NOT tell me you have decaf coffee and then make me an americano and charge me more for it. I would have gotten caffeinated drip coffee if I would have known. I didn't make a big deal out of it but that is annoying. Just tell me up front. It's only a 25 cent difference but I want to pay for what I ordered. I'll probably still go back someday but it's not at the top of my list. read more

Morgan and York is a solid place if you have disposable income and enjoy the finer things in life. Unfortunately, I am not there yet in life, and a visit to M & Y sucks my money. Staff is super friendly and helpful-- they are very knowledgeable about the products they carry and know much about cheese, wine, and chocolate. Their sandwiches are really tasty. How can it not be? Everything that goes inside of it are very high quality ingredients. However, I probably need 3 to become full, which would run me around $25. One day when I can afford the finer things in life, such as insurance, non-generic medicine, and 6 month dental exams, I will come back to Morgan and York and buy the entire store! read more

Calling M&Y unpretentious is like complimenting the pope on his ecumenicism.* The unnecessary dark blue butcher's jackets on every employee, the staggering effrontery of their prices for whole bean coffee, the thousand-dollar goat hock hanging from the rafters, and the random case of crazy expensive pocket knives perched on their obsessively polished floor --- the setup is more suited to Upper East Side Manhattan than SoPack** Ann Arbor. The prices range from decent to ludicrous. I have yet to find a 'steal' at M&Y. The selection can be awesome, but I've also failed to be able to purchase rye whiskey and chartreuse from their supposedly excellent spirits selection. I don't buy their wine because I can find better deals at Trader Joe's and Plum Market. However, they're pretty much my only source for excellent bread and cheese products if I don't want to make the trek to east or northwest Ann Arbor, and they do pull an excellent espresso***, so if you have the money to waste and enjoy feeling rich while you spend it, go for it. *No offense to His Holiness, but he does tend to make small gestures towards interfaith unity while simultaneously issuing papal bulls asserting the degeneracy of heterodox Christianities. **The neighborhood near Packard south of Stadium. You have a better name for it? ***Last time I ordered espresso (which, as always, was excellent) at M&Y I got an amazing yarn about the sugar they served with it which was in these unmanageable large chunks and was apparently produced in some kind of heirloom steel troughs. We were very disappointed to order two sandwiches at fairly high prices and received sandwiches half of the size of what they should have been. After taking them home and cutting the sandwich in half to split, we looked at the minuscule amount of filling and were highly upset that they cost us over $25 after tax. I ended up returning them to the store and asking for a refund. These are $5 more, and much smaller then the baguette sandwiches from another well known Ann Arbor deli (and in the case of the Roast Beef and Tellagio almost the exact same ingredients); but only a smear of cheese and two ounces of meat. We had gotten the Roast Beef and Tellagio from the other deli the prior week - and the less expensive sandwich had more of the delicious cheese and twice as much bread... made from similar, if not the same ingredients. Considering the higher price, I was really looking forward to a substantial sandwich, but instead I had a substandard experience. read more

I love the deli at M&Y, this is the place I always go to get stellar antipasti ingredients and luncheon meats. Staff are excellent and very keen on food and giving great service. What you will find: A toothsome array of salamis of all types, the Rosette from France is amazing. I also like the garlic sausage (when available), and the flower-shaped Caliente Pilar is spicy and really makes a sandwich zing. Tongue loaf (try it before you turn up your nose...it's good stuff!), pate', pastrami, parma and parma-style hams by the slice (or pound if you've got money to spare!) Sour and 1/2 sour fermented pickles, The Brinery goods, Avalon and Cafe' Japon breads (really good baguette's from Cafe Japon). The full-sour pickles will make a batch of Polish Pickle soup really special. Really high-quality imported pasta - I wanted to know what $10 pasta tasted like, so we bought a bag on a whim (and with a gift certificate...hehe) and it is definitely light-years better than the usual grocery-store varieties. I make my own noodles frequently, and this was better *sniffle!* Preserved lemons, Tracklements smoked salmon, REAL anchovies and pressed caviar (mmm), salted capers, cultured butter. A nice selection of cheeses, try before you buy (staff are always ready with samples) I've only had one bad cheese after 8 years of shopping at M&Y. At least 10 olive oils and 8 or so decantable vinegars...this allows you to TASTE before you buy - which I love, who want's to be stuck with something that doesn't thrill the taste-buds? M&Y also carries an interesting array of wine, that is different from the other wine shops in town. They also have a decent selection of hard liquor. read more

I literally live where I live in Ann Arbor so that I could always be a short walking distance to Morgan & York. People often complain that it's an expensive store - frankly, you get what you pay for, and I have regularly purchased items that were of better quality for a comparable or lower price to products you might find at Plums or Wholefoods. However, neither Plums nor Wholefoods has the atmosphere, staff, or events that make Morgan & York so wonderful. Matt & Tommy are great people who really know their stuff. All the staff at M&Y are AWESOME. We never could have believed that a beautiful european-style deli, with some of the best foodstuff to be had in Ann Arbor, would feel like such a positive extension of our family. As someone who has lived in some of the major food hubs of the U.S. and Europe, I can say with complete conviction that Morgan and York is simply the best anywhere in the U.S. I encourage everyone who loves eating and sharing food to shop at Morgan & York. Drop in, get a nice coffee, eat a nice pastry, and take home some beautiful cheeses, meats, and wines for the ones that you love. Morgan & York will always be an important part of our lives. I use Morgan & York in a limited way: to get meats & cheeses to nosh on with wine. I can't speak to their other operations but for cheese & meats they are top notch. They know their products, are generous with letting you taste & try things, and make great suggestions. They also have a nice wide selection of options. I have friends who come in to Ann Arbor once or twice a year, and this is one place that is their must-stop. We love zingerman's creamery but there are no meats there (maybe with renovation that will change). Zingerman's on Detroit street has more to choose from but parking is a bear. Total disappointment. The staff could not have been more rude. We were charged $250 to hold a reservation and the place was empty. We we made a complaint we received poor service. When we later made a comment to a manager the reply basically implied they are more concerned with making money then customer service. I'd skip trying this place. read more

Many award-winning wines and a great deli! But since I last reviewed M&Y, there is a new twist! They have added espresso and pastries, well worth an early morning stop, from 7:30 on, except Sundays, I think. The baristas are professional and friendly, and the coffee choices are superb. The pastries, from Cafe Japon, are out of this world. We often have their wonderful sandwiches made to order to take home for lunch while there, and I buy a few chocolates as well. I won't repeat what I and many others have already said about their exceptional food items, but I will say you should make an early pit stop for espresso and a sweet treat, just as you would in Italy. If you have a few minutes to spare, sit at one of the polished wood tables and read the paper or chat with a neighbor. It's a very friendly place. My husband drives and we always park in back in the early hours; maybe because the front door is still locked? I need to check with him on this. read more

Wow, I could spend hours in here, getting lost in the amazing array of chocolate, cheese, pasta, specialty sausages, mmmmm. It's like going to an amusement park -- it's expensive so you only go there on special occasions. Not really, but kind of. When I was hunting for some really good spanish chorizo and manchego, I knew to call Morgan & York first. (Note: cured Spanish chorizo -- NOT the Mexican style chorizo, is really hard to find around here, believe it or not). They had two kinds of chorizo and two kinds of manchego to choose from, and after some lengthy taste sessions, I giddily made my picks :) They also carry Ann Arbor Tortilla Factory chips and very fresh salsa. Their selection of loose leaf tea is small -- I would suggest to them to add descriptions of their tea and possibly have some samples for people to smell. That is essential to the tea-buying experience. If you are looking for any type of specialty item -- peppers, wine, beer, cheese, candy, chocolate, cured meats, etc. etc. etc. make your way over here, chat a bit with one of their knowledgeable staff members, and just explore. read more

They have a "big kid" candy department with glass jars that you pick and choose to make your own candy sack. Bag sizes are small, medium and large; the prices are $14.00 a pound. They had amaretto and rum cordials, dark chocolate marzipan drops, hazelnut candies, fancy malted milk balls, expresso beans coated in , you guessed it, dark chocolate! They also had packets of Pop Rocks in flavors I haven't seen since childhood, and lots of European specialties like nougat! On the counter as I was paying I spotted rose and violet pastilles. When you factor in the Deli, (which carries baguette from Cafe Japon, Iberico Serrano, spices, candy, and many other incredible treats) they win the prize hands down. I know this is Ann Arbor blasphemy, but I rarely go to Zingerman's any more! (Zingerman's is for tourists!) When it's not too busy, grab a hand crafted cappuccino. They do it well. I love coming to this place for a special breakfast or brunch. They have great baked goods, a nice little menu and wonderful coffee! It's also a fun environment since it's shared tables. I like the relaxed atmosphere and browsing all the fun wines, oils, vinegars and little food items they sell in the back. All the workers are great at service too - very nice and helpful. Always ate good here, always fresh. bought a few wines here before that were very good and well priced. They have wine tasting on Saturday's - I've never been there for one but, I think it would be fun to do once! I only had one bad experience - and sadly it was with their cheese counter. They sell so many wonderful cheeses and meats - all great! But sadly I did purchase a Munster (and when I say Munster, I mean Munster-géromé, or Menschterkaas, NOT Muenster), that had gone bad. And I don't mean like, I could not handle the strength of its taste, I mean it literally was bad, couldn't eat it, gave us a stomach ache. I never complained or took it back (what would they have done with it? Been stuck with a too-smelly cheese?) maybe I should have, but I HAVE bought some other nice Alpine cheeses that were excellent so, might have been a fluke when I got that one bad cheese. read more

I absolutely love Morgan and York for more reasons than one. :) 1. I am impressed by the new space since the renovation. There's seating now and the atmosphere is relaxed and decor is natural and beautiful. I especially like the tall tables near the windows because I prefer to stand when I'm there to do some work. 2. Coffee is delicious. I personally think Mighty Good Coffee does it better in terms of making the actual coffee, but I am a fan of Small World Roasters. I believe M&Y is the only place in AA that uses Small World Roasters. You really can't go wrong with M&Y or Mighty Good. 3. They have yummy salami! I do think their sandwiches and salads are something you can make at home with a fraction of the price! 4. There is parking! If you can't find one in the front, try the back! read more

We mostly shop the wine and deli. The Kermit Lynch wine selections and periodic wine sales make our trips to M&Y worthwhile. Sometimes you just want a wine with more flavor than the ones available elsewhere at under $10. We are never disappointed with spending a little more to get a memorable wine for a special dinner of quality ingredients. We have picked up wine for gifts, special dinners, and just for fun. Helpful staff gives accurate advice. At holidays there have been gift wrapping services that makes life easier while you donate to a good cause. Staff is also very knowledgeable about liquor and taught us about new rums to try, as well as an affordable choice for brandy for cherries. The deli is so fun - there are now local cheeses - the Camembert from Chelsea is so good. Wish there was an artisan gluten-free loaf as they do so many great local products. Sometimes you just want to be well taken care of or learn more about the great foods and wines of the world. And there is always plenty of parking in front or back (yes it is a quirky inherited parking lot, but that's Ann Arbor) read more

I actually liked the place better when it was Big Ten Party Store. They still have "Big Ten" on the awning, but they're officially calling it "Morgan and York" now. It was sort of a middle-brow place to get wine and cheese before, and now it's much more upscale. The place is beautiful and has a great selection of wine and cheese, but their wine selection is a little out of my price range. They do have a rack dedicated to table wines for $12 and under, and that's about the only rack I'd be buying from. Prices are a bit cheaper when you purchase by the case, though. I also like that they have a vinegar and olive oil tasting station. You can grave a piece of baguette and sop up some extra virgin olive oil, or some specialty vinegars that ranged from 18-year-old aged balsamic to a sharp but flavorful vinegar made from a Cabernet Sauvignon. read more

M&Y... I'm glad it exists and every couple weeks I feel like strolling over there... But I do end up a little underwhelmed. It's beautiful, but its SO pricey. They have so much, but they also have so little. It's is a great speciality shop, especially for wine, cheese, candids, meat, and fancy sodas. The sandwiches are.... Good. Not incredible, but definitely good enough that having tried a couple now, I still want to try more. They definitely use baguette bread, not sandwich bread. The bread is a little tough. The giant one-dollar pickle is definitely worth it as a side, as is the $5 gazpacho. I wish they had fewer wines and more groceries. read more

Morgan and York deserves positive marks for a nice atmosphere, friendly service, and a great beer and wine selection. They also have a cute, quirky selection of candy, which includes some European ones that are typically harder to find. The sandwiches are above average, but I always wish they were better. On more than one occasion, I've had veggie sandwiches that distinctively tasted like cured meat- not terribly appetizing; also, an indication that the grill isn't cleaned properly between orders. Finally, I agree with other reviewers that their prices are too high. I would ideally give them 3 1/2 stars. read more

I have never, in my 3 times visiting this establishment, received a warm welcome or gosh a simple smile, from any of the employees. This for me is reason enough to look elsewhere for nourishment. This is a hidden gem in Ann Arbor. The menu is amazing, great beer selection and maybe the best and diverse wine selection in the area.

Some nice high-end booze, but some lengthy waits and the occasional wildly-overpriced item. I've always been quite happy with their single-malt scotch selection, and they do have some interesting beers. There's a solid high-end deli counter, and enough bread, milk, and butter to save you a trip to a regular grocery. I have had one fairly off-putting experience: I recently saw Swedish farmer's cheese (Hushallsost), the same Scandic brand that Ikea carries as one of their few non-house-brand foods. I figured it'd be twice as expensive as Ikea, and happily ordered a 1-kilo wheel; at checkout it turned out even more expensive, and once home I found it gummy and old, on par with the worst shipments at Ikea. Not impressed. The chocolate truffles are fine, but nothing spectacular; the balsamic vinegar was good, the lemon excellent, but the pear with pink peppercorns neither peary nor peppery. Their markup is fairly steep --- when there's another place that carries the same item, Morgan and York will almost always be the more expensive. Sometimes I'm happy to pay a premium for selection; other times it leaves a sour taste. read more

If you're craving a quality glass of vino, upscale fromage or even thin slices of prosciutto derived from pigs that were fed truffles exclusively during their short-lived life, look no further than Morgan & York! This quaint shop features cheeses that are made right here in Michigan (and give the classic European favorites a run for their money) along with the trusty classics such as Humboldt Fog and creamy french chevre, forcing customers to unconsciously pace back and forth while trying to decide what to sample and/or purchase. Not being so into flesh consumption as of late, I cannot vouch for the quality of their meat - though my partner in crime says it's the best he's ever had. My favorite area of the meats is a small selection of fish from Durham's Tracklement, an Ann Arbor establishment that sells only the best fish in the midwest. As for wine, the selection is acceptable for those not seeking out something rare. While their array of wines are limited, Morgan & York always has something that will do the trick for any occasion. Be sure you know what you're looking for before visiting the store, as the staff is clueless when it comes to assisting a customer in pairings (or hunting down a certain varietal). The chocolate station always catches my eye, no matter how hard I try to avoid it. There are countless options of sweet treats, some more appetizing than others (chocolate covered Oreos? No thanks!). Their cookies have rocked my socks off once or twice (more like twenty plus times - shhhh!), and I've yet to find one that I didn't adore. Whether you're getting a bite to eat, or want to catch up with a friend over a glass of wine and a cheese plate, this place is the one! The only downfalls are the lack of outlets in the main space and the single stall restroom. It's not as hidden a gem since they changed their name from "The Big Ten Party Store" and got a classy new awning, but Morgan & York is still under-recognized as the wine and cheese leader of the Ann Arbor region. Yes, that prestigious title is often mistakenly assigned elsewhere, usually to Zingerman's (at least the cheese part). Let's say you know nothing about wine and don't have a lot of cash, but you're throwing your first grown-up dinner party and want to impress your friends. Go to Morgan & York and lay yourself at their mercy. They'll do you right and help you pick out several tasty wine options within your stated budget (N.B. you do have to be willing to pony a minimum of around $10 per bottle--not even the pros at Morgan & York can magic up a $5 bottle of decent wine). Oh, and mixed in among the displays of wine are candies from foreign lands (ok, mainly Europe) and AMAZING HOMEMADE TRUFFLES. As wonderful as the wine experience is, the cheese counter in the back is where Morgan & York shines. They have a huge spread of different cheeses (at least as many types as you find at Zingerman's, perhaps more) and a staff of well-versed cheesemongers who are happy to share samples with you of pretty much anything. I've gone in and said, "I like cheddar and parmesan" and been handed little slices of cheeses I never knew existed that hit my palate just right. I discovered both Piave and Cantal at Morgan & York. They'll also sell you the perfect crusty outside soft inside baguette to transport your cheese selections to your mouth. There are two things that could improve at Morgan & York. One, the parking lot confuses me and I hate it, although there are plenty of spaces with parking in both front and back. Two, I wish Morgan & York had a better selection of American and South American wines. They specialize in European vintages, and certainly have tons of good stuff, but my favorites are usually American. read more

My first Morgan & York experience was on Saturday when a group of us went to see a magic show--that is, a demonstration of how to turn cow's milk curd into fresh, ready-to-eat mozzarella. it was fun to watch, and the best part was that at the end of the demonstration, we got to eat ALL the cheese that was made (about $100 worth, our friend calculated). A fun way to learn about cheese, have a delicious snack, and familiarize ourselves with a gourmet shop to which we'll certainly return. We liked the large jugs of various oils and vinegars from which you could fill a glass bottle--just like getting a glass of lemonade--and the coffee shop in the back. Much of the merchandise--especially the fancy cheeses and imported chocolates--were crazy expensive, but I got a generous loaf of bread for just $2.95--crusty, chewy, and made with my favorite Grizzly Peak Red ale! On our way out, we picked up Crush sodas in every flavor and a big handful of Lion bars--it's always a holiday when you find the stores that stock English/European candy bars--and ate them on the handy wooden bench/seats outside. I wouldn't do my quick-n-dirty shopping here, but for a treat on a slow afternoon--yessiree! read more

Great selection of wines, largely from small vineyards, with a wide range of prices. I stock up during the wine sales, when the case discounts bring the fancy bottles within my budget. On top of it all, they are super-friendly and helpful. Tell them what you need and how much you can spend and you will end up experiencing a wonderful new wine.They also have a huge selection of beers from all over the world, including all of the great local breweries. The deli makes terrific sandwiches, with the best baguettes in Ann Arbor, sourced from Cafe Japon. They make what may be the best cappuccino and espresso in the city. My kids like to try the different oils and vinegars while I shop for wine, and each has a favorite sandwich that we pick up for picnics. read more

Now also known as Morgan and York, this store as BIG 10 was once the only game in town when it came to exotic ingredients. Then: a long decline, when the exotic foods all got dustier and dustier (and all they seemed to sell was kegs of beer for fraternity parties). Recently Big 10 has undergone constant and obsessive remaking of its image and its selection. Now you find high-end cheese, overpriced spice (go to Whole Foods bulk section for better spices or to Farmers Mkt for fresh in season), and pretentious wine. Many of the things they used to have are gone, but the neon sign survives. I don't know about the kegs. read more

I'm addicted to M&Y. The staff is awesome. They are knowledgeable without being pretentious. The espresso is yummy and they use Calder dairy for my lattes, making them extra tasty. They are only getting 4 stars because I'm a vegetarian and they aren't very veggie-friendly. But I'm a coffee drinking, bread eating, wine sipping, chocolate-loving gal who manages to find plenty to love about this store. And even though I'm a vegetarian, I love that they display the whole leg of whatever unfortunate beast it belonged to above the deli counter. It is expensive. Sometimes really expensive. But a lot of their products come from small European producers that get shipped here while stopping for customs and tariffs. And many of their local products are specialty items so you don't get to benefit from mass production cost-savings. In a macadamia nutshell, this place is what Trader Joe's wants to be but can't because their cheap-ass business model forces them to sell cheap-ass products. So, if you aren't wealthy, this is a good place for special treats for special occasions and an everyday latte (which are reasonably priced.) If you make a little more money, love fine food and wine, then consider yourself lucky enough to have stores like this available to you. Bon appetite! (added later that day: what crazy timing! Wonderful coffee and teas made to order at the counter where you are able to sample and shop good cheese and deli meat. Morgan & York rocks. I first checked it out with my boyfriend, as we both like cured meats, pate, and a fine espresso. The employees are welcoming, helpful, but not in that breathing-over-your-shoulder manner. They are knowledgeable, and over by the deli counter, are happy to give you a taste of anything. Just the other day I got a taste of their summer special of Spanish gazpacho. YUMMM. On my first visit I tasted theif half-sour pickle and their espresso. I found the espresso to be a little bitter, myself, but excellent espresso is hard to achieve. The crema dissolves quickly, and to get it just right, not sour, but not yet bitter...hard. Have you tried their sandwiches? Made from excellent ingredients, they are simple, and better than anything I've gotten around town. Or out of town, for that matter. Their truffles are made in-house, and the balsamic truffles are top-notch. The peppercorn pate is yum. Country style (coarser), went well with a baguette from Cafe Japon. I love Morgan & York so much. I love cheese and wine, but I'm not an expert, so I love coming in here and just asking for suggestions. They never talk down to you or make you feel like an idiot for not being a wine snob. They're happy to work with you in whatever price range you want, and I've come away with some new favorite go-to $15 bottles of wine. The cheese counter is my favorite though. Unfortunately, it has ruined my ability to go to Trader Joe's and be happy with whatever cheese I find there because now it all tastes bland and boring compared to the amazing specimens I've had at Morgan & York. My go-to favorites are triple cream brie and the discs of local goat cheese. I've had a couple of sandwiches as well, which are a nice treat once in a while. The coffee is also quite good. I especially love their mocha. The counter can get quite busy on the weekends, especially on Saturday around the free wine tasting, so I like to stop by here on weeknights when I can. read more
