But it was super crowded so I ended sitting in the back section, which was more comfortable because there were less people. Nate and I were in Ann Arbor on a sunny, almost 70-degree day in March and I knew I wanted to try to find a spot that had an open patio. It can be hit or miss finding a spot with outdoor seating so early in the season, so I texted my friend and fellow Elite Tiffany S: "Do you know of any places with a patio that might be open today for lunch?" Her reply: "York!!" So off to York we went! I will say that parking seemed a little tricky as it's sort of tucked into a residential area - we got lucky with a spot on the street. They do have some designated parking in front but that lot was full. I couldn't really tell by reading reviews & looking at Yelp photos what this spot was like, but it's an interesting mix of coffee shop, wine bar, and deli. There is also a Ricewood BBQ window and I think a food truck in back. The patio has ample space and I was surprised to see it wasn't super busy. We had just eaten, so we weren't hungry, but they do have sandwiches, cheese boards, salads, and breakfast items. Everything sounded really good, so I would definitely come back in the future. We saw people hanging out and working, so Nate fired up his laptop and got some work done while I sat and read. I loved the murals and art around the patio. Also huge shoutout to the staff - especially the person who informed me that I am eligible for an Ann Arbor District Library card since I work in the city! The food tastes excellent! It's fresh and Greg crafted made with local ingredients when possible. This was the soup of the day and a perfect fit for me. I love black beans and quinoa. There's tomatoes, onions, garlic and kale in this as well. Jts a good balance of flavors, and textures, a foodie's delight. There's good ambiance here with it becoming a townie favorite. I stopped in for a casual bite with some girlfriends after going to pilates down the street & ended up having one of the most memorable evenings thanks to the food, drinks, and the warm hospitality - especially from Jaden, the bartender, who was an absolute gem. I started with the Bresaola and Cheese board & added a side of raspberry jam (which was recommended by Jaden), a decision I highly recommend. A sophisticated yet comforting starter. Next up: the drinks! The first was the Wakey Wakey! - a bold, smoky-meets-bitter cocktail with depth and complexity. The mezcal and spiced rum gave it a warm, sultry kick, while the real espresso shot and demerara brought rich coffee notes and a hint of sweetness. The grapefruit added just enough citrus to lift the drink and keep it balanced. If you like your cocktails with character, this one's for you. The second cocktail, Thistle and Thorn, was a complete contrast in the best way - bright, floral, and slightly spicy. The strawberry rhubarb aquavit was so unique and played well with the rhubarb and Cocchi Rosa. The jalapeño, honey, and lime gave it a sweet heat that lingered just enough without overpowering. Refreshing and layered. For dinner, I had the Reuben, and wow - what a sandwich. The corned beef was tender and flavorful, the Brinery sauerkraut added the perfect tang, and the house-made Russian dressing brought everything together with a creamy, savory punch. The rye bread, grilled to perfection, had that lovely crunch and richness from the olive oil, with a touch of sea salt and pepper that enhanced every bite. Easily one of the best Reubens I've had. I love York because it's such a multi-purpose space. I love going with friends for a drink in the evenings or on the weekends. I also love going during the weekday to get work done over a pot of tea. They have a huge wine selection that's amazing and the food is very good. They always have a lot of options given there is a barbecue pop up inside as well. The only downside is that it's a bit pricey as a graduate student so I can't go as often as I'd like. But when I go it's always a treat. read more

I've never been disappointed with their food. Sandwiches were very good. It was a bit too chilly to sit outside. Only complaint I have is about the acoustics. We were there at lunchtime and the place was packed. Every table occupied. Lots of background noise from all the people. The three of us are all 75 or older and our hearing isn't what it used to be. Despite its flaws and high prices, York is one of my favorite breakfast places in Ann Arbor. The food at York is consistently good. Whether it is something simple like Avo Toast or it's a gourmet salad or sandwich like a Bocata. The ingredients used in the food are high quality so at least you're paying a premium for excellent and artisanal food. I like that there is a beautiful outdoor space which I often frequent to get fresh air and avoid respiratory viruses. There are lots of culinary options in addition to the cafe. Ricewood is located in York where you can get good BBQ and outside there is a food truck called Bao Boys, which I have yet to try. There are mistakes made. Once I made a takeout order and they didn't include the salad I ordered. Luckily I checked in the parking lot and went back inside. The worker apologized and I received my salad. Just a note to check your takeout orders. York is always busy with long lines, so something may fall through the cracks unintentionally. read more

An absolute Ann Arbor institution! It's been cool to see how York has evolved over the years from a small (but amazing) wine and deli shop to a largely expanded indoor/outdoor community gathering hot spot. So many different vibes at York! I just went today to pick up mortadella for sandwiches, as York is the best for quality deli meats and cheeses. Indoors, there's plenty of seating for gathering with friends. Outdoors, there's plenty of seating with heat lamps in the winter. You can get good coffee/tea, breakfast sandwiches, Zingerman's pastries, simple deli classics. They also have cocktails and mocktails, beers and wines. If York's menu alone isn't what you're craving, they have a Ricewood BBQ and Bao Boys on site, and a rotating cast of food trucks. Often have music and community events as well! Check out their instagram or site for upcoming special events. I enjoy their wine tastings. Parking can be a little tricky, but they've improved signage to help. This place is so cute and cozy! They are so knowledgeable about the alcohol. We learned all about Chartreuse which is a super rare liquor and hard to get ahold of! This is a great wine bar but also has tons of options for drinks and food as well. Lot of seating and on warmer nights they have food trucks, fire pits, and music on some nights. There is also a side restaurant included in this place that serves fresh bowls!!! From morning until night and when they sell out they slap a Sold Out sign on that particular bowl so it's definitely FRESH and first come first serve! this place is known for wines and cheeses so stop in for a really great Ann Arbor vibe and treats! York is a great spot to catch up with friends, any time of day, any time of year. I've gone to York a number of times with several different groups of friends and am a bit horrified that I have never reviewed it until now. Whether indoors or on the patio, meeting for lunch, coffee/tea, or dinner, it has an inviting ambiance and a selection of food and drink that will appeal to most anyone. There's also a wine shop in the back with an array of different wines. I've never bought there or attended the tastings, but that's a great thought for the next review! My most recent visit was with some girlfriends on a weekend afternoon. The place was hopping! I got a pot of herbal tea and grabbed a table in the wine shop area. After they had gotten their fancy coffee drinks, we sat down to catch up after several months. The pleasant din of the restaurant hummed in the background as we sipped and chatted. I've also gotten cheeses here for cheeseboards (I'm married to a français, so he is picky about good cheese), and I'm happy to say that the ones here passed the test. York is hyped but lives up to it, and I think one visit will prove that to you! read more

Always a great time at York! I've been coming here for years even back when it was just.a wine and cheese shop called Morgan & York. If you drive by on any Friday or Saturday evening you'll see the courtyard is packed (even in the winter!) and some deep house playing by local DJs. They offer up some housemade menu items like sandwiches and snacks and have a full service bar. You can also buy a bottle of wine and pay a cork fee to enjoy it while you're there. A number of pop-up restaurants are featured here too! I've had the pleasure of trying some true local gems in terms of food who rotate throughout their patio. The only downside (if you can call it that) is that *because* it's so popular it is *always* crowded (a great problem for them to have, though!). You can expect a line for ordering food and tables indoors to fill up quick. It's also quite crowded inside. But during the warmer and fall days, I tend to go outside in the chairs/tables provided in their courtyard since it's a little bit more spacious. York Food and Drink is a restaurant-wine shop hybrid, located in Ann Arbor. The restaurant features a long bar that flows into a charcuterie/cheese area and then a coffee bar. I was there on a recent holiday, in the early afternoon, so the restaurant was packed. I was checking out the merchandise, both the chocolate in the large wine area and other gourmet goodies located near the charcuterie, when I spotted the cheese boards on the menu. They looked interesting, especially with soup. However, as I perused the menu board a bit longer, I thought that the Jamon Serrano and butter bocata (sandwich) would be a better choice. This is a Spanish take on one of my favorite French sandwiches, ham and butter on a crusty baguette. There are two separate areas for dining, across from the bar or outside in what is known as York Yard, as I later learned. While outdoor dining would sound appealing most days, it was unfortunately very windy. The sandwich was okay. I liked the ham, which tasted a bit like prosciutto but I was disappointed by the baguette. The bread was tough and leathery rather than crisp and chewy. In addition to the sandwich, I picked up some local honey, French chocolate, and hot chocolate. The staff here are exceptional. They responded to my questions with patience and kindness. Incidentally, York Food houses Ricewood Barbecue and shares its yard with Bao Boys, a food truck offering Asian street food. read more

I returned for a girl's night a few years after my first visit. The place has been updated and organized into areas for: food, bar, wine bar, rice wood BBQ, and outdoor patio. It's. Beautiful space with great service and amazing selections. I must also acknowledge the efficient, innovative set up they have in place for complementary feminine hygiene products and touch - less disposal. Kudos! Now for the food! York is a neighborhood gem! The only reason why it's not five stars is because York is a victim of its own popularity. That means it's hard to find a seat in the coveted York Yard. And it's all about the yard. Where do I even start? Let's turn this around and start in the very back of the inside space, because that is where you will find a very well curated and thoughtful wine shop, staffed with passionate knowledgeable wine lovers. There are a few well selected beers and aperitifs too. On my most recent visit when I came in on a warm summer evening, I was looking for a light red wine, with bright acidity, that would go well with a variety of foods. I was thinking a Beaujolais would hit the spot. Fun and playful wines are having a moment, and I was first shown a couple of those that sounded delightful, but I was really in the mood for something more... French. After talking it through a bit more, I was recommended a Gamay. Without asking the price, I decided to go for it. When I was being rung up, I had the very pleasant surprise of the bottle being a good bit less than expected. Corkage for enjoying the bottle out in the yard is a very reasonable $10, and that included both an ice bucket and some impeccably clean Riedel stems. I'm a real stickler about glassware, and these were perfect! I guess what I'm trying to say is York has wines for every budget, and I highly recommend going for a bottle versus going for a glass at the bar. But there is a bar out front that has some well made cocktails, wine by the glass, and beer pours including brews from Mothfire just down the street. Beverages are great, and the coffee service is solid as well. If you go early, it's easy to enjoy them in the yard. After 6pm, even on a weekday when there isn't a hyped food pop-up, your chances of getting a seat outdoors is dicey. I've had to abandon evening plans on several occasions, because I had no interest in hovering around waiting for a table to clear up. It's all self serve. No reservations. Saying it's "the law of the jungle" may be a little over the top, but that's how it felt to me. Food options are delicious. Ricewood is located indoors. Bao Boys are in a trailer outside. And York itself has several delicious sandwiches and salads. More importantly, they have a very select assortment of some of the worlds very best meats and cheeses. Breads come from Zingerman's Bakehouse. And there is a lot to love. Provided, of course, the food of your heart's desire isn't already sold out. There is a surprising amount of scarcity at York. Once I went towards the end of the night, and I couldn't get a baguette sandwich because they were all out of baguettes. In my heart of heart, I know this is a good thing. Food is fresh! It's not sitting around. Product moves. It's also good for the bottom line, as it limits waste. And I guess that is good for the earth too. The trick, and I hate to share it, is to come early. Cut out early from work, and come before 5pm. Go to the wine shop. Get a bottle. Bring a book or a magazine. Snag a primo table. Hang out. Relax. When you're hungry eat. Linger to dusk. If you're lucky there may even be a fire. Just don't wait too long to eat, because what you want might be gone by the time you're ready. But once you're a bit into the bottle of wine, hopefully you won't care quite as much. Because all told, the York yard is a truly lovely experience. Growing up with my parents owning an Italian deli in New Jersey and moving out to Michigan in my early adulthood, I've longed for the day I could find imported prosciutto by the pound. I moved into the neighborhood a few years ago, and was pleasantly surprised when I visited York for the first time. While the price point is a bit more than my wallet prefers, I know that I can source quality meats, cheeses, and wines from York when I want to put something together for a special occasion. Day-to-day: I love coming to York, especially with my two dogs, to sit outside and enjoy cold brew (super strong) and a breakfast sandwich when the weather cooperates. If it's a little later in the day, it's the perfect spot to hang with coworkers or friends and enjoy happy hour. There is often live music, art pop ups, or food trucks that visit the outdoor "yard" feel that York has put together. You can find fire pits and picnic tables to enjoy snacks & drinks from York, while also visiting two other food establishments on the property: Ricewood (BBQ) and Bao Boys (bao buns food truck). Both are excellent and merit their own 5-star reviews. Their bar is top-notch. Give them a follow on Instagram to see some of their weekly cocktail specials, or stop by and hang with the awesome bartenders. The line to order a drink at the register can get long, but if you sit at the bar, you can order right away. There is always something to improve upon though-- it seems that some of the staff do not have the same "pep in their step" as others. I've overheard baristas/employees talking about customers as I've waited near the register for a coffee, which I found to be unfortunate. We are all human, but it was a poor touch.
