Had a great experience with getting my male cat neutered. He had become a bully overnight and we needed to get him fixed quickly for my young female's sanity. They had several last minute openings and we were able to snag one of them. All staff were kind and explained everything thoroughly. Very pleased. read more

Worst check in process I've seen. Was informed that process could take between 10-30 minutes. I'm okay with that, but when you pick and choose which cars to approach rather than in order of arrival it's not alright. When 10 others are helped prior to you and waving down the people to let them know that you are there and are supposed to be next. Poor customer service read more

I have rescued two dogs thru the York SPCA. There are so many animals and only so many volunteers to help that you have to be patient, but I felt the animals were all cared for and safe. I rescued a beautiful Red Nosed Pit and my current fur child, Radar, both of them "off the streets", with no history. I love them both. Consider donating goods such as old blankets, towels, laundry soap, cat litter...as well as spaying your cats, if you have any. That is the most heartbreaking is all the kitties that need homes that keep getting brought in. I will continue to support the York County SPCA read more

I was very surprised to see the limited number of stars for the SPCA in York, Pa. My husband and I adopted a dog who had been taken from his home due to illness and long time abuse. The SPA named him Chico, and we kept it. Our experience with the SPCA in York was wonderful. They treated us very well, were honest about our dogs issues, and the whole process was very smooth -- people all very nice! Good experience. Looking for another rescue pup to be Chico's brother!! read more

I took my puppy to the SPCA to be neutered. He did not do well. He developed bruising and redness around the incision and it turned out to be infected. If you have a good vet, have the procedure done there. read more

I adopted a dog from here two years ago and then about eight months later I adopted another. The people that work here really do care about making sure that the pet you want is a good match for you. They want to make sure the adoptions stick, and I commend them for that. read more

A terrible experience. The staff was not friendly and the overwhelming attitude was none of these dogs would be a good fit for your family. We were treated with disdain. There seem to be a lot of employees running around but not many people being helped. It seemed like we were annoying them to see a dog. At the desk an employee was looking up an animal we were interested in and we thought he was going to show us for confirmation, as we leaned in to look he looked at us like we were criminals and with scorn said excuse me. Maybe a HIPPA sign should be posted. I believe this organization is struggling financially and it is no wonder. Educating the employees that people looking to adopt should be treated like VIPs would change this place into a sustainable sanctuary. If 90% revenue is brought in from donations then that stream will quickly dry up. I don't want any of my tax dollars to go to this organization until they change attitudes. read more

I know that things with Covid has made it difficult with businesses, but I was so unhappy with the way I was treated when I came in to surrender my cat. I found an abandoned cat and decided to try to keep him. It didn't work out. The cat was injured and after trying to get him help, rehome him, etc - I decided to take him to the shelter. I was greeted very rudely as soon as I got there. They took the cat without even telling me much about what to do. So I was just standing outside. Then they kept coming back to ask me questions in a rude way, almost accusingly. I never got to say goodbye to the cat or ask questions or anything. I was planning on making a financial donation for the cat, but they didn't even give me a chance to ask questions about how to do that. It would have been better off and more humane if I had put the cat down myself. I was in tears even before I left their parking lot because it was traumatic for me. I didn't even get to talk to the person who had set up my appointment. They were quick to take my money though. I'm sure that they were putting the cat down and that makes me sad that this cat didn't even have someone to hold him while they put him out of his misery. read more

The York SPCA is absolutely amazing. I just rescued a beautiful kitten yesterday and the process was quite easy. They truly care and try to promote better lives for these animals. They ensure that when you make that step in taking home a pet that you are fully aware of that lifetime commitment. I have always been a loving, committed and passionate pet owner but too many people nowadays abandon that commitment. No pet deserves that. I am beyond satisfied with the help I received in this adoption process and it was one of the happiest moments of my life. My pet even came with a few little things to take home. There is really no better place to get a better companion. I am very thankful for everything. I love my baby girl, my first cat ever, my tiny little kitten. I will give her all the love possible. I have lost 3 dogs from them running away, and I have to say SPCA is a life safer! Each time we lost a dog the Spca has always been there for us. We were so relieved when they found our dogs. Spca is great and very helpful read more

During the application process we were denied because we fostered cats for my friend about a year or 2 ago, one if the cats we were watching for him was pregnant, so then we ended up with kittens we were fostering also, so of course we took them all to the vets for their shots. So when they popped up on our file when they called our vet, they didn't believe us that we didn't have them still and because they weren't up to date on the file they said they would have to schedule a home visit and not even just our home but the neighborhood, which would include us being responsible for stray cats they find and we live in the middle of the city(and by the time that would've happened and got approved the dog we wanted to adopt would've been gone, knowing this has happened before to my mother and they dragged out the application process when she wanted to get 2 brothers to keep them together and by the time she was appoved, they had already separated the brothers that were together since birth.) They also had strays on our file that we took in when they came to us sick, and instead of watching an animal die we took it got it medicine and let it back out once it was better. So that was also another cat in the file, which apparently if we don't hunt down that cat and keep it up to date on its shots everytime it's due even though it's an outdoor stray, we're unfit to adopt a dog. They want to find animals homes, but they make it so difficult for someone to adopt an animal that they still have to pay for. Maybe they wouldn't have to put down so many innocent animals if people didn't have to jump through so many hoops to meet their "expectations". read more

The staff seems very disorganized. One staff member will say one thing and then 5 minutes later another staff member will say something the opposite of what the first person said. This staff seems very overwhelmed and often unfriendly. Overall, don't trust the advice you get. Be very cautious if you adopt from here. I am concerned when they contradict themselves if you talk with more than one staff member. We adopted a dog from there 4 years ago and that was a good experience. Now it seems like a very different place. read more

I have adopted three animals here (a guinea pig and two cats) and each adoption process went smoothly. The staff has a lot to deal with - the front desk folks deal with people dropping animals off to be surrendered, people hoping to adopt animals, and communicating with behind-the-scenes staff and volunteers. So, some of them seem a little stressed, but so would I, if I had their job! We are currently in the process of adopting a dog and have been treated with kindness and respect, while it is apparent that their main priority is ensuring our home/family and the dog's personality/needs align. This is so important to ensure the animal being adopted doesn't end up back in the ASPCA's care ever again. After this canine adoption is complete, our fur-family will be complete. I 100% recommend adopting an animal from here - after all, even if you catch an employee on a bad day, a little human annoyance shouldn't ever outweigh saving an animal! read more

I have been at this shelter three times. First time to pick up a little Dalmatian mix for transport to a rescue. The staff was friendly and they were extremely busy that day. Second time for another dog for a rescue. Every time I went the shelter was busy, and I always felt like they treated me so nice. The facility was very clean and organized. Trust me this is probably the best animal shelter I have visited as I am a rescuer for different rescues and I have been to many, many shelters. I noticed a lot of volunteers walking dogs, and caring for the animals when I was there. My third visit was the same. I'm making a fourth visit to this shelter tomorrow, and the lady (Donna) who called me to schedule a neuter for my dog was very nice. Called me back immediately both times. I hope tomorrows visit goes well also. Kudos to this shelter. read more

I have never felt more welcomed or well treated than I was at the York County ASPCA. I have to admit, after reading so many negative reviews on Google, I was leery to even visit this shelter. After being pre-approved via the application process, I was given a call and was told so. This process only took a few days, but I can assume that it could a bit longer during certain times of the year. The caller was kind and professional--wasn't rude at all. After visiting the shelter today, I was still treated with respect, and that same kindness I was before. The staff allowed my girlfriend and I to visit the dogs, as well as walk, and see one. ALL staff were kind in this regard, and wanted to make sure that both our needs were met, and the needs of the animal--which I can respect greatly. The staff were also very thorough, and wanted to make sure the pet that we chose would be right for us--I was grateful for that. These are obvious people that care for the well-being of these animals, in both the shelter and in finding a good, loving home. I highly recommend the York County SPCA to anyone wanting to make a difference in a pet's life. P.S, DO NOT let the negative reviews deter you from visiting this facility--as I have found my next best friend there. read more

Horrible place. Bad business practices, terrible customer service, they never answer the phone. More than half their animals are not even abused, they are stolen from poor families who can not afford the legal fees to sue the s.p.c.a. Many come from loving families who are heart broken from the theft. To add insult to injury, these same loving families are looked spun badly when trying to adopt from this same place. read more

Yesterday, Friday, December 29, 2017, at precisely 10:00 am, I happened to glance out my patio door at the Hanover Apartments in Hanover, PA, and saw a gray, apparently well-fed cat walking on the grass outside. For a second I didn't give it another thought until it dawned on me that it was about 20 degrees outside with even colder temps and snow predicted for that night. I became very concerned for this cat's welfare. I immediately looked up the number for the York County SPCA and called to tell them about this cat. Unfortunately, no one answered the phone and I was sent to voicemail. I left a detailed message outlining what I saw and a description of the cat. I expected a quick call-back because of the imminent threat to this animal's life, but they did not return my call until 5:05 that afternoon. I was unable to pick up the call at that moment, but returned the call within 10 minutes, but they had already closed; I yet again left an urgent voicemail. This afternoon at about 1:00 they decided to finally call me back and I was able to speak to a very condescending young lady. First she asked me if I had the cat in my possession, to which I answered no (if I did, it would be reasonable to assume I would have mentioned that fact in my two voicemails). She said since I didn't have the cat in my possession there was nothing they could do and implied that I should have gone out and brought the cat in. Sure! I would have had to immediately go outside to retrieve this cat before it could scamper off even though it was 20 degrees and I was barefoot and shirtless at that moment, then risk getting clawed and bitten without even knowing if this creature was rabid. She then proceeded to lecture me that I should have called 911. This is the first time in my life that I have ever experienced such a situation and felt I was caring and responsible enough to call them and speak to a live human being at a supposedly "humane" shelter. I was particularly irked that she seemed to put the blame for this cat's possible demise on me when it should be incumbent on THEM to properly contact the appropriate authorities upon receiving my voicemail. Their attitude was entirely nonchalant and uncaring and it was MY fault that this cat may have died. Hell, I tried to do the humane thing and the York County SPCA bungled the whole situation and blamed ME for them doing so. A totally inexcusable, inhumane, and irresponsible response to a desperate and dire situation. read more

My experience was rough. I took my female there to be spayed due to their discounted prices. There is a reason they are discounted! I originally made appointments for both of my dogs which I needed to prepay for. I tried to call to cancel one of the appointments but some days there is no one to answer the phone so I brought my one dog in and told the lady at the desk I'd like to cancel the other dogs appointment. She assured me I would get a refund. That was November 24. Today is December 15 and I still haven't gotten my money back. Also my dog ended up having some complications. They tell you that if this happens you are to call them back right away! Well I have called. Over and over and over again. I've left messages which they have never returned. I ended up taking my dog to our vet and she has some type of infection and an unidentifiable mass in her abdomen. The vet honestly has no idea what it could be. I haven't been able to communicate in any way with anybody at the York County SPCA since I picked my dog up on November 24. I made a mistake caring about how much money I spent over the well being of my dog. Do yourself and your furry friend a favor and spend the extra money to have you veterinarian fix your pet. read more

York co SPCA is a nice place clean and ok. Staff is nice but at times disorganized. My family went there to adopt a cat after ours died and it took us several hours to do so. We waited in line for a half hour to fill out the application then we were able to look for a cat. First we asked about the cats online and those cats were fostered out so we would have to come back, then we decided to just look there and once we found a cat it took forever to get someone to help us. Once we were able the volunteer was nice but kept leaving us in the visitor room and we had to go hunt her down to ask questions and to see other cats. After two hours we were ready to walk out due to frustration. Then another volunteer was nice enough to help us out and showed us another cat. This volunteer apologized for the problem and finished helping us. Once we decided to get both cats it took another two hours to finish the process. We told them that we were going to get dinner and come back because they were taking to long. They did not like that but my husband ended up talking to the manager and she allowed it. When we got back an hour later we still had to wait before the cats were brought out to us to take home. We started this process at 11 am and we finally went home at 10pm. I am not joking. By the time we got home we were angry, tired, and hungry. It is a great place but very difficult to get through the adoption process and also the dropping off process too. Many people waiting to leave animals were getting frustrated with them. They are over whelmed and need a bigger staff to help with both processes and a manager that is better organized. Also, York Co could use another SPCA in the area. read more

I fully intended to walk away with one, if not two cats, but wound up walking out frustrated and empty handed. The new facility is nice and I wanted to support the SPCA, but would never recommend or return to this place. They denied my application saying that I didn't own my home. I had to drive 30 min. home and 30 min. back with proof of ownership only for them to tell me that the cat we wanted wasn't good with small children (I had my boys with me.) They avoided showing us cats we wanted to see saying that an old male cat was best for our household. We had requested a young female. They would say "here is one" and put us in a room of older males and leave. ???!! They never brought us the cat we asked to see, so we just walked out. I guess they figure the little plastic box the cat is living in is a happier home than our large home with a loving family. No wonder they are overcrowded. When sharing my experience with friends two of my friends said they had the same experience. Fur-ever home in East Petersburg, in Lancaster is wonderful and that is where we adopted our little girl. read more

The York SPCA operating out of the PetCo on Eastern Blvd. in York, PA has shown some really poor business ethics today and I felt compelled to share this story so hopefully no one else experiences what my friend did. A close work friend filled out an application for a kitten a couple of days ago and was approved yesterday. He was told that he could pick up his new little friend today at lunchtime and he happily showed her photo to several of us here in the office. He could have gone to a breeder, or surfed the pet ads in the paper, but he wanted to adopt, and he trusted the York SPCA, but they let him down horribly. When he called this morning to re-confirm his pick-up time, they told him someone else was there at that moment and they were releasing her to these other people instead of honoring his application. Georgia, who he spoke to this morning, callously told him "first come first served", which was utter garbage because he WAS there first - several DAYS first, so if "first come first served" was truly the rule, then it was certainly broken here. This is lousy treatment by a group who is supposed to be encouraging adoption. There was no sensible reason why this should have happened - they could easily have re-directed the new people away from this particular kitten since there was already a approval in place and a pick-up time agreed to. Pulling the rug out from under my friend in this way was at least unprofessional and disrespectful, and at most discouraging - our whole office was discussing this awful treatment today and none of us will never trust the York SPCA again. read more
