From a new volunteer: I'll start with the sad news of having recently lost my Toby (my dog) to bone cancer. While on a bike ride, we rode past the Baltimore Humane Society that I had not known existed. I got home, Googled BHS, and found that they also had volunteer opportunities. *insert smile here* You can complete an application online to volunteer, and they will quickly get back to you with instructions on what to do next. Fast forward, and I'm at BHS for my first training (DogTown1). You'll have to attend various trainings for whichever tasks you would like to volunteer for. Let me also state that their property is VAST. They even have a pool for the dogs to swim in. *insert smile here* After the training, we were given a tour of the facility. Those pets are LOVED! The volunteers really take care of them, from walking to cleaning and just learning the characteristics of each pet; it's an amazing thing to see. We were also notified of five of the dogs who were going home that day. I look forward to the rest of my volunteer experience. read more

I adopted my two cats from here and the service was extremely helpful. They made the adoption process simple and straightforward. I also got my dog neutered here for $175. They do tend to be booked so make sure you call ahead of time. They also offer vaccines when I got my dog neutered ($43 for a canine influenza vaccine). They charged $20 for a 2 week supply of trazodone (sedative), which was worth it. I fully support the Baltimore Humane Society! read more

I came to pick up some dog and cat food. I was able to sign up online, complete a waiver and schedule an appointment to pick up. My original day was on a snow day and the office was able to re-schedule me at a later day. Once I arrived, I called the office and was immediately in touch with a person who came out to give the food. They bring the food out and allow you to pick it up and take it into your own car. Easy process and much appreciated help from the Humane Society. Also, everyone I either spoke with on the phone, over email and in-person were lovely! read more

I had a cat carrier that I no longer needed and they accepted it. Glad I didn't have to trash it as it had only been used twice.

Would not even consider letting me adopt a cat after I admitted I might let it go outside. Also, they had dragged the interview process for adopting to be about 5 days with 2 days in person. I had even turned in my application for adoption in advance prior to going the first day. Oh, and on the first in person day, they ignored me for about an hour or so. The politics of simply adopting a cat have never been more thoroughly seen than in this office space - an office space that could possibly be bothered with completely processing my application until I had been there three times in person, so I gave up. This is a place that is supposed to be saving animals, but if they raise the bar too high, then no one will want to save these cats and they'll just end up selling them all as cat cadavers to some bio lab company. I definitely don't agree with that! read more

Put in an application to see one of the doggies on their website and was contacted the next day to set up an appointment to meet him! Upon arriving a few days later, the staff was super welcoming and gave us the option of seeing a few more dogs if the one we came to see wasn't a good fit for us (we found out he had some resource guarding issues that may not have been compatible with our current dog at home). The staff decided to bring out a female dog to see us first, a year old bulldog who, while a little shy at first, was super playful and loving. It was clear that she was the right pick for us. We brought our 13 year old yellow lab to meet her the next day, and the trainer who walked us through the dog introduction was so thorough and informative!! He gave us great tips as to how we should keep Maggie (previously Kazee) feeling comfortable, safe, and secure while adjusting to her new home. The facility was clean, the staff was welcoming and knowledgeable, and I couldn't be happier with our overall experience!! I'll be sure to recommend this place to all my friends! read more

We are looking for a family dog. There were about 10 - 12 dogs for us to choose from today. There are also cats...lots of cats and kittens to pick from. The site opens at 12 and closes at 6 Tuesday through Sunday. Although we did not find our forever pet today, we will be back within the next week to see if she is there. Once an application is placed and accepted, it is good for 90 days. I am happy that they screen and make sure the pet and family are a good match. Each dog has a profile that reveals if he or she is good for kids, playful, loves quiet and other special remarks. The fees range from free to $150 because some dogs are sponsored; they are neutered/spayed, vaccinated, etc. There were plenty of volunteers in green shirts. This might be a place just to visit to see how a shelter operates. read more

Just to update: my kitty's URI never went away despite treatment twice, and it turned out to be something more serious. I'd recommend keeping the pet insurance provided until you're certain your pet doesn't have any issues. There was no way for the shelter to know it was more than a URI, but I did feel like I was deceived considering they told me he was treated and would be fine after I brought him home. If you're adopting a sick pet or a pet recently treated for something, I suggest pressing them for answers and ensuring your pet was properly treated. Other than this, my original review still stands and the adoption process was very simple. read more

If I could give 10 stars, I would. The process: Call them to set an appointment to see the available cats/kittens. Fill out an application. If the staff has any questions they call to clarify. Come on the day of the appointment to view the available cats/kittens. If you like one, then arrange to pick up and get orientated to the transition process. For me this was a 1 hour orientation session about Slinky and what my after-care responsibilities were. In addition, if you have concerns, tell the interviewer. I am firm about not wanting any animal on my kitchen counters or table = so there was a long discussion about training options and how well each technique works. After this orientation, you will be given ALL the animal's paperwork and advised to establish a relationship with a Vet. You will also be given a list of "participating vets" in your transition paperwork. This list does not include all the Vets in the Greater Baltimore Area. The Baltimore Humane Society also does follow up with various other departments within the non-profit, IF you ask a question that the customer service person (may be a volunteer) cannot answer. In my case, a trainer at the Baltimore Humane Society called to explain to me how to use Training Techniques to get the eye drops into Slinky's eyes. OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS 1. VET: Dr. Kevin Smith, Beltway Animal Hospital, 8702 Loch Raven Blvd, Baltimore - corner of Loch Raven Blvd. and Joppa Rd. Bring the paperwork from the Humane Society. Dr. Kevin ALSO talked with me about using training techniques to get the eye drops into the cat's eyes. 2. BOOK: I would also give this book 10 stars if I could. Total Cat Mojo: The Ultimate guide to Life with Your Cat. by Jackson Galaxy. Has an INDEX, which is very helpful for researching specific topics. Can be purchased used on Amazon. I was VERY FORTUNATE to have a number of people AND the book to help me out with various personality and health issues with Slinky. She is well now AND does not walk on the counters or kitchen table any more = at least that I know about. In Short: The Baltimore Humane Society gives new and perspective animal "parents" information AND support so that the likelihood of a loving relationship between the animal and the person is more likely. This is so important if you want to have a more peaceful relationship with your cat. If you want more information about cat and human relationships and how to negotiate them - get the book. It explains everything in detail. Dr Kevin also re-enforced what the trainer and the book all recommended. read more

GO HERE if you're interested in adopting, fostering, donating, or volunteering!! I am absolutely amazed by the friendly, knowledgeable staff at Baltimore Humane Society! I had fostered for a different organization and received nowhere near the support that this organization has shown thus far. The veterinarian even called me directly to explain the pet's medical needs and answered all my questions. They're busy but definitely are organized. They genuinely care about their animals and will accommodate fosters (providing manuals, emergency numbers, etc.) and help them decide on an animal that fits their schedule and personality. In my opinion, this is the perfect way to lead to permanent adoption. They are a no-kill shelter, so reach out to this organization before contacting anyone else! read more

I attended Dogfest today with Toby, my lab (and boyfriend of nine years). What an awesome experience. The admission included games and lots of freebies. I especially liked the sand park, swimming, and duck pond where they got to pick a duck and win a prize. They had lots of vendors selling nicely priced, useful merchandise. the merchandise varied from food, treats, clothing, leashes, anything you could desire for your pet and so unique. Tons of dogs up for adoption to good homes and rescue organizations on hand. So much fun and well worth it. Good job human society and volunteers! Parking was easy and free too! read more

My wife Anna and I adopted Misty on Nov 26 2016 and wow what a special day for us all. The staff at Baltimore Humane Society were a breath of fresh air, every and I mean every person we dealt with was great . The young lady in the kennel area was so sweet I am so sorry that we can't remember her name but you could tell she really cared about the animals. The young lady who explained the paper work to us was great and even made us a really nice tag with all our info on Misty's tag . When we originally inquired about Misty she told us everything and we went right to the shelter to claim her, we did the application on line to speed up the process, this young lady was expecting a baby and this was her last day before her medical leave and she was great, also the supervisor who approved our application was great and wasted no time giving us a answer . They gave us a folder with the history of Misty and a lot of other information we could use, so anyone looking to adopt a pet do yourself and the animal you are adopting a favor and give the Baltimore Humane Society a chance forget the pet store this is the place to find happiness. My husband and I adopted 12 year old Rupert on 2/3/17 from the Baltimore Humane Society. We are so thrilled to have this little man in our life. The staff and adoption process are unmatched, and we've adopted from many rescues. We were given all possible information on Rupert, some medication and advice were sent home with us, the handouts provided are full of wonderful information, and all the staff we talked with were excited for us.
