I was visiting Oakland during MLK weekend and a friend who lives in San Fran recommended Yoshi's. She said it is her favorite sushi place. I can see why. The place is nice and I love that it's also a live music venue. I didn't get a chance to check out a concert, but the line was long with people waiting to get dinner before heading into the venue. I thought the prices were reasonable and the sushi role I got was pretty good. If you check in using Yelp you're able to get a free order of edamame so be sure to check in when you come to visit. If I'm back in the area I would definitely come to check this place out and hopefully catch a concert. read more

We have been coming to both the restaurant and night club at Yoshi's for many years. The food has gone through a number of changes, mostly for the better. We still prefer the sashimi, sushi, and tempura offerings mostly. We love the many performers who usually pack the house in the night club. The only negative aspect is that the sound system could be improved as during our last two concerts, the musicians drowned out the singers. The audience was really into the Angie Stone concert last night, getting up and moving to the music with great enthusiasm. Only wish we could have heard Ms. Stone better. read more

Took my two daughter's to see Musiq Soulchild Saturday, July 22, 2017. He was such a disappointment. Musiq only performed for 50 minutes to 1hour, he admitted to not knowing all the words to his songs and asked the crowd to help him sing. The song arrangements were horrible. He mentioned that he had so many songs and would not be able to sing them all because he did not have the time and we weren't paying him enough. The tickets for this concert were $69 way more than usual. I will never attend another Musiq Soulchild concert. Also, I complained to Yoshis, but was told by Tammie that Yoshis do not have any control over how long an artist perform. Its really concerning to me that Yoshis is okay with this. So YOU YOSHI GOERS BE AWARE THAT THE ARTIST YOU PAY TO SEE AT YOSHIS are not obligated to perform a certain amount of time whether they perform 30 minutes or 1 hour Yoshis will not be held responsible according to the box office manager at Yoshis. I am a long time Yoshis this is my second time experiencing this at Yoshis but at a former location in SF with another artist, leela James, who only performed 30 minutes. Uninspired, overpriced, cafeteria style sushi restaraunt and club with live music that can be quite good (Hence the 3 stars). Be warned you can get much better sushi for much less elsewhere. C'mon Yoshi, just cause you can and have doesn't mean you should. read more

Came here for Valentine's Day. The steak was cooked well done despite the menu indicating that it would only be prepared medium rare. The waitress commented on her own volition that the meat was cooked way too much and offered to get me another steak. The steak she came back with was cooked through even more. My girlfriend's dish was cold. She also got another dish and that dish was also cold. It was clear Yoshi was just trying to turn a bunch of plates on Valentine's day in an attempt to take advantage of couple's looking to celebrate. Our bill was over $200. For those prices, each meal should be made to order to ensure quality. Very dissapointing. read more

I have to give this place 3 stars because I expected way better. I went there for a concert and we had a dinner before that. Food are overpriced and alright, or maybe I didn't really try good things from them. Drinks are good, they have variety of choices from cocktail to sake collections. I love their live music house, how smart of them,how they set up the stage and tables. everyone is able to see performance pretty good. I am excited to go their new place opening in a city. Yoshi's is a high cost sushi and Jazz club . The Jazz was memorable, but the sushi was poor quality for the cost. This review is very mixed. The restaurant was great. Yuki was our server...she was very attentive and helpful. The food was quite tasty. The salmon and sushi yummy! Unfortunately, our experience in the cabaret was not so good. We waited 50 minutes for service to get a glass of wine...as did others. The seating (high bar stools in the back) are very uncomfortable. You cannot stay in the seat for sliding off the stool Many gave up and chose to stand. The sounds system is average. The performers above average. It appears this club needs and upgrade/update. Nancy Wilson's show was amazing. I give the experience 4 for the restaurant, a 5 for the performance, and a 2 for the venue itself. Maybe I'll try the Yoshi's in SF. read more

We came to Yoshi's on a Friday night to eat and to attend the show (the Jazz Crusaders. Wow! Still amazing!) We had been here before for lunch and a Sunday matinee, but expected it to be more crowded on Friday night and it was. If anything, though, the service was better on Friday. This time we decided to eat light and ate at the sushi bar. Excellent Spicy Dragon and Yellowtail nigiri. My cocktail arrived after we began eating, but it was delicious and they did not skimp on the alcohol. We arrived to eat only about an hour before the show was set to begin and could not get show room seating at a table we thought we would prefer. However, it's true that acoustically there is no bad seat in the house. We've been in back, down front, and to the side and it always sounds great. The jazz venue is cabaret style and definitely intimate (read: squeezed together). My only real complaint about the venue is that, in the show room, most of the chairs are extremely uncomfortable, small & wooden. The show may seem very short, but you are ready to get up when it's over because of the seats. That being said, after the 8pm show was over they announced they had seating available for the late show. In spite of the chairs, we lined up and got into the next show for free. They played a totally different set for the late show. Worth sitting in those chairs! read more

We went to this restaurant on a Thursday and had a great time. The food was good, service was great, nice decor and parking was not difficult. I had Kobe Beef, Seafood fritters (my favorite), grilled fish, and finally chocolate cake. Everything was good, that's why I gave it a 5 stars. We came in around 6:00 with reservation by 6:45 p.m. the whole place was packed. We also ran into Carlos Santana that night as he was going to have a performance later on. The food portions were just right and you can eat all of these feeling stuffed. We would definitely come back for dinner and music the next time. read more

It truly IS a great spot - wish there was another one somewhere out near my work in Danville/San Ramon area. Pretty good selection of performers generally, good food too, my only issue is that the seats are a little too close together if you choose to sit closer to the stage, and it always seems there are a lot of 'guests' who don't have to pay - wouldn't it be wiser to allow the paying patrons choose their seats first and whats left goes to the guests? But for real, I love this place and the one in the city too - I frequent both for people I love to see plus new faces and tunes. read more

Restaurant Review: My wife and I visited on a Saturday night. Elegant ambience with a casual flair. I noticed people wearing blue jeans to suits but no ties. Our waitress, Tina was very helpful in suggesting (after I asked her) what to order since it was our first time here. We ordered the Angus Beef Ribeye, Organic lettuce, and the Autumn Forest which was grilled veggies such as sauteed shimeji, shiitake, crimini and oyster mushrooms, kale, and yuzu soy. Everything was delicious though there was a bit of fat they could have trimmed off the beef. The miso and teriyaki sauce complimented the beef very well. The food is served family style so everyone shares the entrees. A bit skimpy for what you pay so don't expect to take home any leftovers. That is the way some restaurants keep their costs down. Overall this was a treat, so for special occasions we'll be returning. read more

Yoshi's is simply a can't miss. Whenever my sis drops by from med school during a vacation, this is usually one of the first places we go to eat - since I'm paying, of course (!!). If you can, go after 10 pm when the atmosphere changes for the better - it's always good, of course, but there's something about the late late crowd. I'm a big Tuna Roll eater, but I've tried much of the stuff on the menu - and it's all good. Check that; very good. You can get extra spice on just about everything, and the people there are exquisite. Eating Western-styled Japanese dishes beneath the smooth playing of a contemporary band doesn't get any better, and I would suggest Yoshi's to anyone and everyone. read more

My dinner reservations and the seating for the Sinbad show on 1-16-16 were EXCELLENT. Robert the Restaurant and Private Events Manager was very helpful with my reservations. (Extremely informative, patient, and accommodating with the changing number of people for the reservation. This was very helpful as a few people were traveling from Sacramento and Vallejo) The meal and the service were all on point. This venue is a great idea. They have good musicians and a good space, they just need to work on the overall quality of their food and service. Food and drinks are a bit pricey, so they need to be excellent in quality to justify the cost. Would be exceptional with a new chef and more experienced wait staff. Despite shortcomings, Yoshi's does a great job of bringing in talented musicians. I've witnessed memorable jazz here more than once! read more

We stay for a intimate concert and I felt like I was there for a Vegas show. Ah Yoshi's! I love their jazz club and have seen many memorable performances there. The restaurant attached to the club is convenient and convivial. The view of Amtrak trains passing adds a fine vibe. Why then is the food so problematic? Each time, I regret my choices. I see what others have ordered and vow to choose that the next time. A few years ago a friend ordered a sashimi dinner. It was beautifully presented and she remarked that the fish was fresh and delicious. This item wasn't on the menu this time but sashimi a la carte was. Three kinds of sashimi (5 pieces each) were ordered. Five chunks of each arrived on separate plates. What was presented were large gobbets of raw fish that had to be skewered on a chopstick and gnawed. It was an inelegant way to enjoy sashimi. With hunks that large, one tastes primarily the metallic flavor of blood and the fishiness of uncooked fish. We would have been happy to pay for fifteen much more thinly sliced sashimi on a single plate at the quoted price. As I struggled with my fish chunks, I noticed that the grilled rock cod on a table nearby looked delicious. Perhaps I will try it the next time and perhaps that selection will change my mind about Yoshi's food. Five stars for the jazz club, two stars for the food. read more

Yoshi's has to be the best jazz venue in the bay area. Wish there were more. This review is not a about the food but about the Omar Sousa Musical band that performed last night, Feb 29. They were amazing to say the very least. Omar Sousa (keyboard), Yilian Cañizares (vocals, violin, dance, vocals) and Gustavo Ovalles (amazing percussion). They served up a very dynamic, creative and fun filled night of mesmerizing Afro - Cuban joy filled influenced jazz. Omar is a master at nuance and control. Yilian was a sensuous, spiritual and musical goddess and Gustavo did way more than just keep the beat. He was a pro at every piece of percussion he could get his hands on. The diverse range of instruments matched the diverse range of how he could handle any mixed meter and tempo. The only glitch was that with the encore the show was only 1 1/2 hrs. i am trying to post photos from the show but Yelp will not take the photos from my computer. i've tried 4 - 5 times. software problem read more

The problem with Yoshi is inconsistency. On a good day, and if you are lucky, you can sample good (not great, but good) sushi. So, it has always been a hit-and-miss experience for me. Last Saturday however, it hit a new low for me. The nigiris are sub-par at best. The fish are a bit dry and not super fresh. The portion is tiny. The duck carpacio is over-salted. The O-Toro maki is such a disappointment, the yuma is overtaking the delicate toro, and I was in constant search for the toro throughout the entire meal. Had it not been for the convenience of having something available to nibble before the show (at Yoshi's Jazz club), and the high expectation that maybe, just this time, things are going to be perfect... I don't think I would spend $$$$ to dine here. Yoshi is overpriced and under-deliver. I can certainly get the same kind of sushi quality from the chilled box at the nearest grocery store. I perfer the Yoshi's at Oakland than San Francisco. San Francisco's is not organized in my opinion. I love the atmosphere at Yoshi's. Live jazz with dinner is always a great treat. I enjoyed a lot of live jazz and soulful artist at yoshi's. This is great with your spouse or hanging out with your girlfriends. My Mom & I also enjoyed live jazz and dinner some months back. That was lovely. The only thing that is disappointing is that they're constantly changing their menu.I realize that change is good, and it would be if they had more of a variety to choose from, but that's not the case here. The last time we went, we were seated in the bar area. The waitress was awesome. Which is a plus. Sometimes if you're seated in the main dinning room, the waiters/waitress are hit or miss. We still love to go despite the recent changes. We'll just order a couple beverages, sushi, skewers, tempura, & maybe a 'Kakiage' Fritter. Overall, we always have a great time. read more

Came only for the restaurant. Very poor service, would not return. We stated on the opentable rez that it was my brothers bday, but the restaurant did not recognize it at all. I even called to confirm the rez and the lady told me she saw it on the reservation. So they just choose to ignore it the day of. Fine. Front of house lady was incredibly standoffish and rude - didn't bother to explain the shoes situation at the tatami table (aka her job) but came just in time to condescend us. While waiting for a waitress to show up, we tried to flag her down a few times and were studiously ignored. Clearly she was done with us. Our party continued to be largely ignored by the clearly overloaded waitress. The runners and busboys tried to makeup for it - they were the only redeeming part of the service; the only ones who cared and made us feel like valued customers. The food is nothing to write home about, but I did appreciate the vegetarian options. My bf liked the soy sauce. They allowed me to make a custom veggie roll to supplement the lackluster veggie sushi options. My brother ordered a beer which never came. Chicken was blah, not worth ordering. Dessert course was best with lovely creme brulee and teas. I was excited about the tatami area, but its just one table - not a section - and there's a pit instead of proper floor seating. It was awkward putting our shoes back on next to a table that was eating. It's a gimmicky thing, and I cringed a little bit at the graceless execution. read more

I had booked reservations thru open table for dinner and tickets for the show thru Yoshi's web site. We were going there for my girlfriend's birthday. I was parking the car and my girlfriend went in to be seated. The manager asked her if we were also seeing the show. She responded yes. He said he would not seat her in the dinning room until she was able to show him the show him the tickets I purchased on line. I had the tickets and was parking the car. We had dinner reservations, I cannot see why they could not seat her and have me show them my tickets when I arrived and asked to be seated. The manager on top of that was very very rude to her. We had dinner. The food can out very late. When show time came, our waiter was suppose to bring our seating arrangements for the show. He said that the front desk was very behind on seating arrangements. He never brought our seating arrangements. We stood in line and checked in with the personnel at the show entrance. They gave us our seating assignments. When we went to the seats, our seats were already taken. They had to find us other seats. We ordered desert an coffee during the show. The coffee never came. I have been a patron of Yoshi's for 20 years. I have been there many many times. They have always been great. This has been the worse experience I have ever had there. Something has changed and they are not being managed well. I will no longer recommend this spot. The food is great by the service and our treatment by staff was extremely poor. read more

Worst experienced ever. Waited more than an hour even though we made reservations. When they finally seated us our table is not completely ready. Our waiter tried so hard to attend to us but always failed. He kept forgetting to give what we asked for. I've gave up reminding him for my tea cup. In regards of the food their main dishes our horrible. Steak is too dry even though our waiter said all the filet mignon gets served medium rare to medium. Lobster was good but the risotto that served with it is doesn't taste anything at all. It tasted like a porridge with no ingredients. It just tastes really bad. For the price of the food that we all ordered this place is not good. Bad service, bad food ruin our Valentine day. read more

I've heard about Yoshi's ever since moving to the Bay. I've been to excellent jazz clubs in NYC, DC and NOLA. I found Yoshis to be over-crowded without the cool venue vibe. The act was good, but the ticket was like $60 with fees. It was nice to eat some fresh sushi and the drinks were good. read more

I truly enjoyed the entire experience. I was born and raised in the Bay Area and this was my first time dining and attending the live entertainment afterwards. Everything we ate was amazing. Yoshi's is OK. The staff is friendly and the bar is nice, well stocked and reasonably priced. The food is just OK - it's not great. I don't know why, but I've never been blown away by the quality all the times I've been there. We usually eat there before a show in order to get the reserved seating. The venue is OK. What I like about it the most is that they get really good acts. What I like the least is that they cram you into those tables like sardines. If you have a heavy stranger sitting next to you, it can make for an uncomfortable 2 hours. read more
