california roll
Wing Y.

Came here a few weeks ago with my mom, wife, and kids. They were full, told us it would probably be 25 minutes or so, but called us up 15 minutes later with a table. It's a small restaurant with a sushi counter to see the chefs at work. We ordered a bunch of things to try and came away really impressed with the food and service. The kids ordered their usual rolls (though the California roll was with real crab). I really enjoyed the chicken wing skewers, hamachi kama, and sea bass. They have several different chirashi options (by price) and I got the middle one ($50). The fish was super fresh and the rice was excellent. Very happy to have this place in downtown Sierra Madre. It reminds me a lot of Sushi Maruyama in San Mateo, one of our favorite spots.

Lemon roll, spicy edamame

Wow! What an amazing experience and service! We got the spicy garlic edamame which was perfection! We got the Asian roll, lemon roll, spicy tuna roll and eel avocado roll! I loved the Asian roll and lemon roll so much!! Such great quality of fish and flavors!! Can't wait to come back again :)

We came by because we wanted to try akimo and shirako! They are seasonal and depend on availability so we called ahead to check. The place is near the center of Sierra Madre, so nice walkable area with plenty of free parking in the rear lot. Staff seated us quickly and took our orders. The dishes all came out as they were prepared; some dishes were noted on the menu requiring extra time. It filled up quickly after opening on a Sunday, so recommend calling ahead or getting reservations.

Stringy connective tissue and tough skin!

Wanted to come for a nice omakase lunch special so we got seated at the sushi bar. We asked the chef what were the different omakase tiers $80, $100 or $120. He proceeded to tell us omakase means "chef's choice" so he could decide, can be up to 30 dishes if we wanted. We asked approx how many pieces of sashimi came with the $80 set, he wouldn't tell us, only said the $80 is lower quality fish...um way to sell your omakase. I understand omakase is chefs choice, but usually you can tell us ballpark how many pieces of fish, and if we needed to supplement with appetizers or other things...instead of risking it we decided to get the nigiri set lunch... The nigiri set lunch was so underwhelming! The tuna was such bad quality and had lots of connective tissue in it which was inedible, the skin on one of the fish was also chewy inedible. Also my ginger had a piece of hair on it! When I told the server she just took it away and they didn't even apologize for it! I had heard good things about Yui but we were SO disappointed!!! Would NOT recommend!

Miso soup, side salad

Best sushi I've had in a long time! I heard about this gem from a friend and had to try it out for myself. I've heard the sushi chef sources a lot of his products directly from Japan and that's what makes this place even more special. It's a quaint little sushi restaurant in the heart of downtown sierra madre that is clean and modern. Cute place for a girls day or date night. Came here for lunch and they have a lunch special menu and the meals are really reasonably priced. Nigiri sushi lunch is only 25 dollars and comes with a miso soup and salad. Not to mention the fish quality and sushi is of impeccable quality. So delicious I wanted to order 2. Hamachi cilantro: so fresh with the herbs, flavorful and light at the same time. And fish was so fresh, melt in your mouth quality. The Portion is on the larger side as well. My friend and I sat at the bar and the couple next to us were having an omakase lunch. I didn't even realize they had an omakase option. It ranges ranges 80-200 dollars so you definitely can choose based on what your price range is. Service is top notch, they checked on us often without feeling like someone was interrupting you throughout your dining experience. Would definitely come back and try their omakase next time!

Yui is an amazing restaurant. They have very bold flavors and traditional food. Their service is good and they make sure to be very efficient. They are not the most kid friendly but that is ok. Their ambience is very plain but not boring. It is very traditionally appropriate.

Friendly, delicious and fresh! I love the yellowtail belly and the salad dressing but the staff is just as amazing as the sushi!

I'm always interested in quality sushi joints that aren't so expensive you can't take a child and stayed alert for a chance to visit. I went with my mom for a quick Monday lunch before she dropped me off for vision correction surgery (which makes Akinori one of the last places I wore glasses). We only had about forty-five minutes, and this was just enough time for a light meal at the sushi bar. The restaurant was small and casual, and we opted to sit at the counter. There were a few other customers, and service was friendly and timely, but not fast. The chefs were skillful and deliberate, and they made delicious sushi. We started with snow crab sunomono, a nice light appetizer of vinegary cucumber and seaweed with a few meaty hunks of sweet crab. Then we got some nigiri: red snapper, black snapper, and tuna sets, which came with akami, toro takuan, ootoro, maguro zuke, and seared ootoro. Every piece was fantastic, the fish fresh, the nigiri delicatelly formed. Finally, I couldn't resist the maximalist Akinori roll, with spicy shrimp and langostino rolled with rice in soy paper, possibly tempura fried, then topped with spicy tuna, eel sauce, spicy mayo, chives, and tobiko. I love an over-the-top spicy-tuna-centric roll, and this one was deeply satisfying. Akinori also does ramen and teriyaki and offers a bunch of reasonable lunch specials. You can eat here pretty cheap, or spend as much as you desire on good quality nigiri. I live almost 20 miles from Pasadena, but I hope to visit this place again.

One of the freshest--if not the best--sushi marketplaces in town! Yama Sushi Marketplace is a small…read moreshop that is always packed with locals looking to satisfy their sushi cravings, and after my first visit, I can definitely see why. The store offers an impressive selection of Japanese goodies, including ramen, condiments, fresh sashimi, and a wide variety of sushi rolls. There are so many options and combinations to choose from. If you are looking for sashimi, head to the back of the store where they have conveniently packaged fish sold by the pound, and they will happily slice it for you. Or, if you are in a hurry, you can grab their freshly made sushi rolls from the refrigerators. On my visit, I picked up ahi tuna, toro, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi, along with California rolls, tuna rolls, and salmon rolls. Every piece of fish was incredibly fresh with a buttery texture and amazing flavor. The quality of the fish and the perfectly seasoned sushi rice were so good that I barely needed any soy sauce or wasabi. I only recently discovered this hidden gem, but it has already become a place I will be visiting regularly. The sushi is high quality, reasonably priced, and absolutely delicious. If you are a sushi lover, Yama Sushi Marketplace is definitely worth checking out!

Eventually I found out a few friends of mine have also gone for years and made their suggestions. As I didn't know what to expect I figured I'd go one day, which I did. Actually, it was about 3 weeks ago. I had driven by it but never stopped by which is crazy. At first glance you'd think the business is still closed and waiting to be opened but you have to drive to the back of the parking lot to enter the establishment. I couldn't decide which sushi I wanted so I got a few. It's cute and small on the inside but it's easy to find what you need and it's easy to see what you'd like to buy the next time you go! I can't wait to go back. The only thing I didn't like was their spam musubi, but it's not the end of the world! The sushi is still something I'm going back for!
