Sierra Madre is a wonderful, charming little town in the L.A. area and situated along one of the main thoroughfares (Sierra Madre Blvd) is Roe Fusion. I had driven past this place a number of times and had been meaning to check it out. Finally on this unseasonably rainy Sunday I figured I'd step in and try it out. I was the first one in and was immediately greeted by my wonderful server Vanessa. She was very helpful, attentive, and gave great recommendations. Started out with the mixed tempura - fresh, nice assortment of veggies + shrimp. Then I tried their deal for two hand rolls - yellowtail poke and spicy garlic bluefin tuna. Both very tasty but particularly liked the taste of the bluefin tuna hand roll. Then tried two of their cut rolls - citrus salmon (very refreshing - the lemon juice and yuzu aioli is a nice touch) and the firecracker roll (shishito tempura inside with bluefin tuna and habanero ponzu that was complimented by the crispy onion on top). Both very tasty - I liked the firecracker the best out of the two. Ended this great meal with the miso vanilla creme brûlée. We actually intended to watch the Dodger game at the Mexican Restaurant, but did not find a place to park, so wandered west on Sierra Madre to find this relatively new restaurant hidden along the Boulevard. The location has been several different restaurants over the years, but the location has never been fully packed when we drive by. The food is good, but while we dined there, it seems the rice was a little to hard and was not what I was expecting. The California Rolls were rather small and really did not represent what I'm accustomed to. Also, the salmon sauce was a bit too spicy for being Japanese cuisine/fusion, and should probably try to be less spicy. Came on a Friday night around 6:45pm. Vanessa greeted us and gave our menus. It seemed like she was the only server working but her service was great! The ambiance of the restaurant is very calm and welcoming. There were plenty of tables to sit at inside with a nice patio outside with additional seating. Parking: Plenty of street parking out in front. Food: Ordered 3 sets of handroll pairs from the menu: salmon crunch (5/10), baked crab and avocado (8/10), tiger (7/10), spicy garlic bluefin (7/10)--but they were out of bluefin and substituted it with another fish. Baked crab was great but a bit small for the price. The spicy garlic tuna had a great amount of flavor from the crispy onions. The tiger and salmon crunch were okay but probably would not order again. Also ordered the filet mignon fried rice and the baked crab Mac and cheese appetizer. The mac and cheese came out after we finished the hand rolls and the fried rice. Filet mignon fried rice (6.5/10). This was okay. The presentation was great but it lacked salt/flavor and only had 8 dime-sized pieces of filet mignon. Had to add soy sauce on top to make it better. Would probably not order this again either. Baked crab Mac and cheese (5.5/10) --took 45 minutes so be mindful when ordering this. This dish was abnormally sweet. Was honestly not expecting that at all. It was like biting into sugar and cheese with each bite. It's also really small and ~maybe~ good enough for two people but really it's like it's for one person. The saving grace was the crab and cheese. That was super flavorful but the macaroni being sweet kinda threw me off. Overall, this place is decent and I would recommend it if you're looking for something new to try. The service was good.
