This is to review Garden Shoppe's seasonal produce. (We have yet to experience the plant nursery…read moreitems.) We'd seen this place many times when stopping at Braxton's for pet food. Finally tried them for veggies the other day and we were really pleased. We normally get non-organic produce from Gentile's in Newtown Sq if/when it's decent quality (prices can't be beat, but quality is sometimes lacking), or we trek to Wolff's in Media for better quality (which you pay for there). What made the Garden Shoppe helpful to us is its convenience to the nearby Acme and Rite Aid we use, and the quality we got for the price. Quality can sometimes be on par with Wolff's, but with lower prices than Wolff's. They did not have the selection of the Wolff's or other larger produce stores, so expect what one might find at a roadside produce stand, not a full market. But for basics, they filled our need very well. One complaint was the corn. Places like Wolff's will normally let you husk it there, and if you get a half-brown dud, you don't end up paying for it. Wolff's has a lot of pride and does not want to sell you something like that. At the Garden Shoppe there is no means of husking, and we have ended up with 40% of our ears in really bad shape (half the kernels missing, worms, rot, etc.), so if they could set up a husking station it would be a great relief. For the other items, though, we're glad we finally tried them, and are sorry we didn't do it years sooner.

They were resistant due to the expected cost and what they considered the ridiculousness of "staging" a house for the market, or even making needed updates. (Yes, these people are trapped in their memories of how it was to sell a house in the 1970s.) Norman Carpet to the rescue. Everyone I dealt with was professional and offered top-notch service, from Walter Bechtold in the Conshohocken warehouse (where we chose samples) to Susan Sullivan (the rep who coordinated our order) to the two installers (Steve and a young man whose name I didn't get). When we discovered that we needed to get the job moved up a day or two so that potential buyers could see the house, Susan stepped up and pushed the job through scheduling on short notice, for which we are eternally grateful. The installers arrived on time (in fact, an hour early) and got the job done within a few hours. Steve and his partner were extraordinarily polite and friendly and did a good job. The new carpet looks miles better than the old carpet, and, most important to us, was affordable...to the point where my parents now wish they'd been less resistant and had gotten more than the staircase done. Yay, Norman Carpet One.

I cannot speak to how good or bad this store is in terms of their carpet and flooring business,…read morebut, as neighbors, they are despicable. Despite having multiple, and usually empty, parking spots both in front of and behind the store, their employees continuously take up every spot on the neighboring street, a street where actual residents clearly do not have enough parking. They have been asked politely and repeatedly by residents if they could please use their own parking, and they refuse. Rudely. There are many elderly residents on the street who end up having to walk from a block away because employees of the store take up minimally three to four parking spots every day. After the blizzards, when we spent many hours digging out a few precious spots, Norman's employees rolled in and took them. As I wrote, I cannot speak to how they do as a business, but if this is how they treat their neighbors, I'm guessing they are the opposite of nice and or integrity based people to do business with, which seems to be the case judging by their terrible reviews.

I don't get there often as I don't live right nearby, and as some may note, it is not the cheapest nursery to shop at. But the cost factor drops when one experiences what is likely the very best service one can get at a nursery in the Main Line/Delco area. I have been to Mostardi's twice in the past week, and each visit I experienced the same kind, very proactive and attentive service from every person I encountered that worked there. Even at the cash registers people are helpful with questions and patient, and in today's visit, I got design advice about laying out my plants purchased in the intended pot I had for them from a clerk who also does potted plant design for Mostardi's. The nursery is beautifully well-kept and importantly, the plants are vibrant and well-tended; you don't get distressed plants from this place. I found also that the types of annuals I purchased were priced competitively with some of the Lancaster County nurseries I go to often. Mostardi's, much like a locally owned hardware store, reminds people why going to Lowe's or a similar business for plants, while convenient, is not necessarily the best deal and certainly cannot offer the same quality of plants or service.
