Not only was the "z" amazing, but the complimentary cashews and marinated olives were a delicious surprise! I couldn't leave without trying the "strange magic" as well, based on my excellent bartenders recommendation. She assured me it wasn't syrupy in the least and she was positively correct. It was Delicious!!! Takes champagne to a new level! I would love to return with a group of ladies to order the disco ball-a spinning punch bowl filled with tasty spirits and topped with champagne! Summer in the city means Rooftop bars and this one just opened up. I wouldn't count on a beautiful skyline from this bar, but worth getting up and out for a quick drink or two. Reservation system is god awful and doesn't allow to reserve outdoor seating, although when you show up, you're told that outdoor seating is for reservation only lol. With the many places to choose for a girl's night out in Chicago, Z Bar was the place of choice and we are still talking about it days later. We were seated at an outdoor table giving us views of the city that can only be found at the Peninsula. Interestingly, although you were seated in the middle of downtown, it was still quiet enough where you could have a decent conversation and you weren't competing with the typical noises of the city. The Z martini was made to perfection and I was "forced" to continually order it throughout the night. Alina explained the menu, answered all questions, and every recommendation made was a knockout. She was friendly, polite, and well versed in regards to ingredients and the overall menu. It started drizzling so we moved inside, and the transition was smooth when Brooke took over. She checked on us throughout and made us feel as if we were the only guests in the room. It was as if she would read our minds and meet our every need--before we even had to ask! Gabriel ensured that our table was cleaned the moment a plate was empty and we so appreciated his attention to detail. He treated us as if we were royalty-can we take him home with us next visit? This was a culinary experience that sets the bar so high, no other place in the city even compares. To top it all off, Kathryn (who I believe was a manger of sorts there) checked in to make sure we were pleased with the experience. What?? We felt like we were the only guests at Z Bar and were so appreciative to everyone's attentiveness and service. I realized this is the perfect place to have a private party, so the hostess even game me the private events catering manager's business card--score!! I can honestly say there is not anything else that could have been done that would have enhanced the experience. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time going anywhere else. A year ago we stayed at the Peninsula and tried Z Bar. A complete mess. Too crowded, too disorganized. Thought we'd try it again on a Wednesday. Was told by the front desk they served food until 11:30. The hostess told us they served food until 11:30 and gave us menus. We ordered a cocktail and was then told by our server that the kitchen closed at 11:00. All their technology and they don't communicate with each other. Seems to be a lot of upper management who have no concept of how to manage their teams. I can't believe that they are still part of the Peninsula group. Maybe Marriott needs to train their staff. American Express needs to review who they let into their Fine Hotels and Resorts program. Chicago has so many good hotels that we will try next time. read more

Visited this past weekend with friends and had an unpleasant experience. The tables were fully committed due to a private event/ limited space understandable. We make our way to the bar which is first come first serve. We were able to snag some open seats and waited about 15-20 mins before the bartender who was directly in front of us even acknowledged we were there. I understand this place does high volume however the least he could have done was greeted us and communicated he would take our order when he was able. It was pretty embarrassing because we were raving about this rooftop to our friends who had not been there before. Normally the service is great and the staff is very friendly this was not the case on Saturday evening. I encourage Z bar to revisit the true definition of professionalism and hospitality. Management should also resolve why their staff appears so stressed and unhappy and how they can make improvements. read more

For such an upscale place, the bartenders should be able to smile, ask how people are doing, and be genuine. Please hire bartenders that are people persons because we did not get that vibe at all! There was wait for outdoor seating, so we decided to sit at the bar instead. The bartender greeted us and made us feel welcome. Overall, the drinks are on the expensive side, however the quality of ingredients is very high. I had an old fashioned and my wife had a fruity raspberry drink. Both were delicious and we enjoyed them very much. They offered us cashews and marinated olives at the bar, which was a nice touch. DO NOT GO. Worst experience in Chicago. Terrible attitude by the hostess. After I had already payed for the overpriced drinks and food, a simple question got a very patronizing and demeaning answer. They also lost my credit card and put the blame on "another customer passing though the table and taking it" rather than simply looking for it. Always love taking people from out of town to this location. It has the perfect little outdoor roof top section with a view of Michigan Avenue. If you are in town you need to come by here and at least have 1 drink to experience the views and the atmosphere! Such a disappointment! The food was good but TINY for the price. The service was awful. First, we were told we'd be seated outside in 20 min. They never told us when our outside table was ready. After 15 min of sitting indoors, still no waters. I got up and went to the bar and asked for waters. There was no apology or recognition by our waiter that we had to get our own water.
