The fountain drink machine was broken, the AC vent on the ceiling was leaking and no warning signage posted, the condiment station wasn't organized and the "open" sign in the window had one working and one broken...just remove the broken one. We were in the area on a stopover, having both been former residents. I realized there was a Z-Burger nearby, something tickled my brain about President Clinton and "best burgers" in the same way Ben's Chili is the best chili, and it was close enough. We just wanted something to sate our appetite for a bit until dinner and drinks later. So we stopped in, and upon entering, I thought I had made an egregious mistake. The place looked like it was once good, in the same way a derelict, dead, amusement park looks fascinating. Or those Web sites that catalog dead malls. Boxes were stacked in the long hallway on the left side, from the front area past the kitchen and to the restrooms. Some I wouldn't have been concerned about, as they were labeled "cups", "napkins" and the like. But some were clearly relatively new boxes of FOOD products. Some of which require refrigeration. I thought, "Well, there's a health code violation or two." The fountain soda machine where you can self serve was out of order, and had stuff piled up around it, so a makeshift other refrigerated cooler offered a small selection of bottled drink instead. But we were hungry and I didn't want to hunt somewhere else, so ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce, Z-sauce, pickles and onion, and a large fry. The food - is actually still pretty good. Not sure it's the best burger in DC, but it wasn't bad, and better than fast food. The lettuce was fresh and crisp. I couldn't figure where in the store it could have possibly come from. The burger was cooked well and tasty, and the fries were a generous portion, fresh cut and piping hot. So what would have been a 1-2 star review, is now a 4 star review by that basis, but I highly encourage the owner and staff to CLEAN the place and put stuff away. read more

The new restaurant looked appealing but when I walked in I saw there was no seating. The menu seemed high priced for fast food but there was a great variety. I got a coffee shake, onion rings, and a hot dog. I should have got a small onion rings because they gave me so many it could have been the whole meal. The batter in the rings tasted a little burnt from the fry grease and there was way too much of it. They were so thick you cold mistake some of them for doughnuts. Other than that, the hot dog and shake tasted good. Unfortunately, someone stepped in dog and tracked the smell inside which made my appetite turn. Very disappointed with my experience at Z-Burger (Washington, DC) I placed a takeout order and the service was honestly terrible. From the moment I walked in, the staff seemed rushed and uninterested, like they were doing me a favor instead of serving a paying customer. No explanations, no friendliness--just get in and get out. To top it off, I paid almost $8 for a single portion of fries, which weren't anything special. And then they added a charge for "service and packaging." Excuse me? So if I don't pay that, do I get the burger in my bare hands and the fries dumped on the counter? The prices are way too high for what you get, and the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth--literally and figuratively. I rarely eat burgers and fries when I travel, but if you zoom in on the photo of the front, you'll see a sign that says "Voted Best Burger". We live in Indianapolis and were just visiting DC and stumbled upon this gem! The food is INCREDIBLE and great size and made to order. They have TONS of milkshake options and various sides. The staff were not only pleasant and friendly but went out of there way to make sure we had a fantastic experience (even wiping down outside tables for us to sit at so they were freshly clean)! Novice move - I forgot to take pics. At any rate, I had dinner here before seeing a comedy show at the DC Comedy Loft just a block or so away. Yelp told me not to eat at the loft and I heeded the warning. I thought we'd be rushed since we got a late start getting to the area, but service was super friendly and fast. It kinda reminded me of a Five Guys because you have to specify you want a single burger, otherwise you'll get two patties. This wasn't an issue since I got the turkey burger which only comes with one. You also get to choose from a plethora of toppings- and I got about 5, including banana peppers. The turkey burger was good enough - nothing special. I liked the soft bun a lot. I also got the onion rings. This was a HUGE serving from a huge onion, or two. The coating was sweet and tasty, which reminded me of almost a hushpuppy - but a really good one. The onion rings my fave thing, actually. I could have handled eating the entire bag but I checked myself. Haha. All in all, it's a decent place to get a burger. I'd try a beef one if I were in the area again. I'd also try the half fries and half onion rings as a side next time. That's great that it's a menu item. They also have so many shakes to choose from, if you're into that. *Seating is super limited. This place was great. We stayed at the hotel nearby and needed lunch when we arrived. The owners daughter was working the register and took our order. They have shakes, burgers and cheesesteaks. She said if she is there they have 100s of shake combos she can make. We said we were visiting for a quick weekend trip. We had 14 yo twin boys with us and wanted to know what was goof to do/go. DO NOT COME HERE. The restaurant tainted our concrete with what appeared to be CIGARETTE ASH. I am not an over reactive or hyperbolic person--I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially in a situation where I am at a counter service establishment with narrow margins. But we were at Z Burger tonight for dinner, and sat at the counter inside to eat. I am 9 months pregnant (ie noticeably pregnant). After dinner we went back to the register to order a peanut butter cup concrete. We received a peanut butter milkshake, which is different because it doesn't have peanut butter cups in it. Duh. Figured it was not a big deal, so we went to the counter to politely ask if some peanut butter cups could be added since that's what we ordered. The man at the register was persistently and adamantly rude to the point that it was pretty embarrassing. He began arguing with my husband and refused to fix the issue. We simply asked to receive what we ordered since we paid for it already and this was incorrect. Finally, he took it from us and we waited about 10 minutes for them to take it back and add PB cups. Thought that was kindof excessive since they weren't busy. We received a completely different concrete (different color) which seemed strange. It didn't look anything like they normally do though. It smelled a bit funny. I took a spoonful and gagged/spit it out because It tasted of chemicals. I asked my husband to taste in case it was just me, and he confirmed that he believed there was CIGARETTE ASH in the dessert! I am absolutely disgusted and appalled at the sociopathy behind this action. My God it's just some peanut butter cups! I am PREGNANT and these monsters answer to customer service could have harmed me. We will NEVER be back and I will be telling everybody I know to avoid this establishment at all costs. read more

We arrived around 2:30 am and the place was packed with other patrons who needed a greasy delicious burger after a long night of not adulting. I got the bacon double cheese burger with an array of toppings and a small order of fries to share. I can't remember much about the fries except they were 'okay', but the burger was delicious! It was made fresh to order and full of flavor. I can't say they'll replace my love for 5 guys, but they did hit the spot and if I'm ever in the area again I'll definitely be back. Since there are LCD order screens on the customer side of the register, it wasn't clear to me whether I should enter my order myself or tell the man at the counter what I wanted. In relatively short order, he looked up from his entry and asked for my order. Prices are higher now than the last photos of the menu were posted, so I was a little disappointed, but was still happy with my chosen indulgence: onion rings. The staff seems to be busy with many online orders. And as they finished and handed me my order the attendant was friendly and accommodating. The onion rings are yummy, large, and crispy! A burger is a simple construction. If you're going to charge $10 for one, minimally it ought to taste nice, stand up as a sandwich, and fill you up. Z burger- at least at this place- failed. If you like your bun to soak up moisture and breakdown like a nice Ethiopian injera, you'll love this place. If you like your burger to be soaked in sweet ketchup and taste like lettuce that's a shadow of some crisp leaf, this place works out. Tried it for the first time today (1/30/23) and absolutely LOVED it. I have never had fries so perfectly seasoned and a milkshake so perfectly blended. I got the bacon philly cheesesteak and it was the size of my forearm! They were incredibly generous with the toppings and everything together was just perfection. To top it all off, the customer service was amazing and the food did not take long AT ALL. Z Burger easily became my favorite food spot after tonight. Honestly, I'm giving this place 4 stars only because I wish there was more room to spread out while ordering and waiting for your order. Their burgers are amazing, especially after a long day and night. They have many toppings that are free to add (but unfortunately as with all good things, guac is extra). The fries, the seasoned z fries, are so yummy and come with this tangy dipping sauce. The atmosphere is so fun. The employee who runs the cash register is so kind and put up with my inability to choose toppings. Cleanliness is good from what I noticed and all employees wear masks. But like I said, if you have a larger than like three group of friends, sitting down here is near impossible and unlikely, especially in keeping with COVID regulations. The food is great and if you're by yourself or grabbing to go this is a great option. But if you're looking for a place with friends, it's a bit of a squeeze. I tried to accept that food was going to be cold and that I didn't have a way to warm it up AND that it was EXTREMELY LATE. However the Bacon Philly Steak was horrible! I think they forgot to season the meat for starters. I added mushrooms and peppers but they were not there.Does it look appealing to you?? Every neighborhood and city needs its greasy burger spot, and local chain Z-Burger is it for Dupont! My needs are simple. I love getting my burger stacked with all the scrumptious toppings and washing it down with some fries and a shake. I don't really know what is in Z-sauce, assuming it's mayo mixed with other stuff, but it's good. And by the way, they have almost 100 flavors of shakes. I am partial to Oreo, but no matter your taste preference, there is a shake out there for you! The couple times I've been here during COVID they looked like they were practicing good sanitation, wearing masks, distancing, etc. It looks like you can sit out on their small patio. Since the Columbia Heights location closed (or maybe it's re-opening? I'm not sure), I'm glad this still exists for that greasy fix you sometimes just need in your life. read more
