Halloween night. Was already irritated when I arrived. The GPS led me to a location that didn't show the Cali name. Instead it was Wunder Garten, a type of outdoor fenced in park with a bar inside a tent, and cubby style seating. Weirdest thing Ive ever seen. Cali Burger is actually a food truck inside the fenced in area. The lighting is dull and almost like you're in a dark night club. You order from a QR code. I ordered a 1/4 lb dog w/slaw, and Gouda cheese. It was nothing extraordinary about the flavor of the dog other than being luke warm. The bun was toasted and slaw was just ok. Terrible food, customer service sucks. Fries came out cold, cheese was not melted and even if it was melted, the cheese was pretty solid when it came out. We asked them to warm up the fries, waited for 10 mins just to warm up the fries. By this time the sandwich was even more cold than what it was when it first came out. Finally got so frustrated for having to wait for so long, went up to the window to ask about the fries, seemed like the lady couldn't understand English or was ignoring on purpose. She kept looking at the cook while asking about the fries. Got more frustrated and I finally said "you know what? Nvm. Forget the fries." Then the lady said "5 mins"... which would have been a total of 15 mins total just to warm up the fries. I Walked away and left the fries behind. Came to Wunder Garden for The Office Trivia event this Friday and while we came too late to participate we figured we'd at least grab a drink and a bite. My friend and I were directed to the food truck outside. Never heard of CaliBurger prior but I can never turn down a good burger. Typical with many businesses post Covid you had to scan a barcode for the menu, which is limited at this location. I went with the blue cheese burger, my friend got the double and we shared an order of fries. They don't ask you how you want your burger cooked which can be a gamble but in this case it didn't matter so much because of the thinness of the Pattie's. We headed to the bar to order drinks while we waited and the food was ready by the time we made it back. My burger was perfectly seasoned and juicy. It had blue cheese, bacon, pickles and a sauce that I honestly couldn't name but paired well with the blue cheese. The fries were hot and crispy but nothing crazy to note. They do have options for "fancier" fries but I like to stick to basics when I'm doing a lot with my burger. My friend enjoyed her burger as well and while initially hesitant about having to get a double because of the limited menu she was happy with it. The food truck is currently parked by the tidal basin, near the MLK DC Circulator stop. It seems to be there daily. There are several trucks in the area. The french fries are the least expensive ($6) from the other trucks. They are decent, without being great. The vendor will give you extra ketchup packets, if needed. My guest liked the burger. Recently, the Caliburger Food Truck came to our building. We had the option of ordering our food in advance plus selecting a pick-up time. Instead, we decided to go to the truck when they opened at 4 p.m. It turned out that we were the first to get there. We placed our orders with the friendly man at the window. In 10 minutes, our food was ready. We both ordered the same thing --- The Caliburger Double, which consists of: "Cheddar, grilled onions, lettuce, pickles, tomato and Cali sauce". In addition, we each got fresh cut fries. The burgers were $8 each and the fries were $4 each. We enjoyed our meal. The burger held together when we ate it. The burgers were thin and cooked medium well. We appreciated that the Cali sauce didn't overtake the burger. Rather, all the ingredients worked well together with none of them overpowering the other. The fries were very well prepared---crispy on the outside and soft inside. They were still hot when we brought them upstairs and were seasoned with salt and some pepper. Fries are at their best when fresh, which makes it tempting to fill up on them, thus leaving no room for the burger. We resisted doing that. We were talking to a staff member at our building. She told us she ordered their veggie burger and thought it was the best she ever had. So, for those of you who want that burger, keep that in mind. They also offer chicken sandwiches and hot dogs. CaliBurger is a good food truck located at Wunder Garten. My wife and I have eaten from them both times there. Last time we were there we ordered the Venice Beach Dog, the Beyond Cali Burger, and the Nashville Hot Crispy Chicken. They were all very good and the chicken was extra spicy which was great. It did take them longer than expected to prepare the food last time which is why I am docking a star. We ordered fries, burgers, bratwurst and pretzels with beer cheese. I've never been to In and Out but my husband is still raving about the burgers saying they're even better. The bun was sooo good! Super soft, that's important for a great burger. After speaking with the owner it makes sense. Their ingredients are really fresh and locally sourced. Gotta love that! The housemade veggie burger so disappointing! The black bean and corn patty was super bland and the sad lettuce, dry avocado, sloppy chopped white onions, and dense bun didn't help. Food truck came to our community and my husband and I were really excited to try it! I would have given 5 stars because the food was good, however there were just a couple of issues. The first one being that he apparently had so many orders he was very backed up, which caused people to wait over an hour for their food. We had a pick up for 7:15 and ended up actually getting our food almost 8:30. Being that he was really backed up my Cali fries was missing the grilled onions that were supposed to come with it, which was really disappointing. So my fries were a little bland. However, my husband loved his Parmesan truffle fries. He also said his Caliburger was good. Super poor service at Oktoberfest. Rude staff when people were wondering why there food was 40 mins late. Complete inability to handle volume and set realistic expectations on when food will be done partnered with the attitude of the staff was disappointing. Food was ok. Let's get this out of the way first, since this seems all anyone wants to know, is it better than In-N-Out? I will preface this by saying I have eaten at In-N-Out more often than I can count. So, the verdict? In many ways its exactly the same, and in a few, its better. I was excited to see this food truck by our place, glad to see them out during these times and happy to support them, and I can promise you I will be back when they roll up again! I downloaded the app and logged in early, when you select to place an order and select the date and time it will tell you where the truck is during that time. I confirmed they would be here and happily placed my order for a Cali Double (A Double Double) and the Cali Fries (Fries Animal Style). The order was hot and ready when I arrived at my requested time, along with about 10 other orders, yea words out, this place rocks. Let me also tell you I knew this place was going to be good when you can smell it from a block away and it makes your mouth water! Got back to my place and my food was still nice and warm. First up the burger. A nice soft bun, 2 good sized patties, juicy and full of flavor, all the fixin's including the grilled onions and thousand island. I closed my eyes and imagined myself in Cali, took my bite and was pleasantly surprised to have the flavors and freshness that i was expecting. This is a solid burger on its own and definitely reminds me of an In-N-Out burger. Next up the fries! Now let me start off with saying I am not a fan of the actual fries that In-N-Out serves. I know, I know, they hand cut them right in front of you, freshly fried etc, that doesn't make them great ya'll. Do i eat them, of course i do, but I like a crisp fry (which In-N-Out's never are) and one that has flavor on its own. Cali Burger delivers on both fronts and with the familiar grilled onions, cheese and thousand island, they do a better fry than In-N-Out. Their fries are crisp, cooked to perfection, and lightly salted. These are the fries you wanna eat. These guys know how to make a great burger, definitely check them out if you want a great meal and if you're craving a taste of the Cali fav In-N-Out you will not be disappointed. Now let me address some of the other critiques i read here on yelp. The menu was extensive. I could have ordered multiple tyburgers, bacon burgers, chipotle BBQ burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, etc etc. What more do you want from a food truck? There are plenty of options for everyone here. As to the price, I paid about $15 all in. People complain that because its a food truck its too expensive. I don't care if its a food truck, food cart, or 5 star white table cloth restaurant, when you use quality ingredients and make a great meal you can charge an appropriate amount. As a former resident of California who craves In N Out burger on the reg, CaliBurger is a godsend! I saw this place opened up at Wunder Garten a couple weeks ago and immediately knew I had to try it. I honestly don't have anything bad to day about CaliBurger. The fries are amazing, crispy, and well seasoned (dare I say....Better than In N Out?). After one bite of the burger, I never wanted it to end. The burger was juicy and fresh and had all the flavors I was hoping for. And to boot, their special sauce is pretty tasty. Having only had In N Out twice in my life (I'm not from the west coast like David), I was happy to find somewhere that even resembled the burgers here in DC. Wunder Garten was a 7 min walk from the NoMa metro stop, and it's a cute little enclosed space with tables, lounge areas, and a bar on the corner of First and L Street. The caliburger was in a truck located at the back of the garden, past the bar area and you order at a little desk they have set up, they give you a buzzer and you wait to pick up your food from the window at the truck. I got a Cheeseburger and Cali Style fries, and David got the Double. They seemed pretty busy and we had to wait a while for the food - even longer since they messed up Davids order TWICE. I personally enjoyed the fries more than I did the burger - the fries were seasoned well and tasted good with the melted cheese sauce. The burger was meh, it tasted like a burger off the value menu at Wendy's - only quadruple the price. $8 for a cheeseburger and $10 for the double, pretty steep. I give it a 3/5 for the burger. I think I'd rather go to shake shack and pay more for a good burger and shake or go to Wendy's and order 4 burgers off their value menu. Good to try though but probably won't revisit this location. I was pretty excited about trying out Caliburger from all the hype I saw and was hoping that a bite of the burger would bring me back to In N Out in California. Unfortunately it did not. While the burger and fries were far from being terrible and were relatively tasty, I think the high prices was a huge turnoff for me. A good part of the allure of In N Out is that it is so stinking cheap. Is a double-double from In N Out worth $2.50-3.85? Absolutely. Is it worth $10? Me thinks not. I do understand that because the food is served from a food truck, the prices are elevated (which to this day, I still don't understand with food trucks in general), but the price point was just tough for me to get over. Burger and fries (no drink) came out to $16! That's a really hefty price any way you try to swing it. I will say that the taste seemed close to In N Out but it wasn't 100% spot-on like others say it is in my very humble opinion. I did make a mistake in not customizing anything or asking if they had a secret menu to see how close they were to emulating In N Out. I'll definitely be back at the Wundergarden so if I'm there and I'm hungry, I'll give this place another shot. Again, I'm sorry if this review sounds negative but I did give it 3 stars so obviously it was nowhere near being a terrible experience. Being from California, I was really excited to try the In N Out copy cat in DC. The venue was pretty cool with lots of seating in the outdoor beer garden. I ordered the double cheeseburger because my normal order at In N Out is the double double. Their version was pretty close but it tasted like their patties were made from frozen patties. In addition, they messed up my order twice. Lastly, the price for a burger is pretty steep for what you get. Burgers at In N Out would be $3-4. The burgers cost in the range of Five Guys around $8 and then extra for fries. So you'll be spending around $15+ for an average burger. I would give this 3/5 stars. Good idea but execution could be improved. Maybe their non food truck location is better. For now, I'll stick with Shake Shack and Five Guys for my burgers until I go back home to California. read more

They have only improved year-to-year, and many patrons asked for food options and they brought it. That is how I discovered CaliBurger. TL;DR The food here is inedible, misleading, and uses very low quality ingredients. We spent $40 on 2 truffle fries, regular fries, the cali-burger, and a brat and threw away half of the meal. Truffle fries - no truffle at all for $8/9. No truffle oil, no hint of truffle. Instead, they sprinkle dried, canned Parmesan over soggy fries. Disgusting and misleading for a $4 upsell. Regular fries - see truffle fries. soggy potatos. Burger - no way resembles In-and-Out. I would have rather eaten McDonalds over this, which is saying a lot. The patty is some frozen garbage meat that is loaded with sodium, fat, and void of any taste. We ate very little and went around the corner to get Indigo. Caliburger really brings down the otherwise good drinks and atmosphere at Wunder Garten. Literally any other food would be an improvement; having no food would be an improvement. read more

I try not to leave negative reviews. I know the restaurant business is a daily struggle and sometimes things just aren't going right. But this place really needs to do better based on my recent experience there. I like Wunder Garten and would like to see this part of it succeed. First of all, pricing. If you're going to charge $6 for fries they'd better be damn good or a least a huge portion. These were neither. They seemed a bit undercooked and you only get a tiny boat of them. Same with $10 for the double burger--I can honestly say that there are numerous fast-food chains that make better, more filling burgers at cheaper prices. Also, when a Nathan's hot dog is cheaper at the ballpark ($4) than your restaurant ($6-8), you know there is an issue. Second of all, service. It took over half an hour to get a double burger, a grilled cheese "burger" (see below), and a tiny side of fries. If this were an actual food truck out on the street people wouldn't get their food before lunch hour was over. They do have buzzers for you to take to your table, but when you see a food truck you expect to get your food in under ten minutes, and certainly not three times that. Third, the grilled cheese "burger." I'm giving this its own separate category because it deserves its own public shaming. We knew when we ordered it that there wasn't an actual patty involved (veggie or otherwise--which begs the question, why call it a burger?), but the toppings still sounded fairly robust so we thought we'd give it a go. Unfortunately, the toppings were almost nonexistent and it's basically just two pieces of cheese on a hamburger bun. How filling, and a steal at only $6! Again, with a few adjustments--lower prices, faster service, better portions--this could be a great complement to the Wunder Garden bar. I was going to give this place 3-stars but then I remembered how much I paid. It truly was Meh...I've experienced better. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger and Truffle fries. After ordering, they give you a buzzer to pick up your food once ready. In total it took about 15 minutes and there were a few folks ahead of us. The Bacon Cheeseburger was basic - sad to say that the burger itself just tasted like one of those frozen hamburger patties from Costco. The fries were super basic too. Shoe string fries sprinkled with truffle oil and Parmesan. I just expected better for almost $18. My friend did order the "animal fries" and they were low key good. This review may have gotten bumped to 3 stars if I swapped fry orders. Sidenote: I have had In-and-Out before and while the fries were similar the burger was not! read more
