Xmas cookie shake and shack burger
    Lena M.

If you're looking for a quick yummy burger meal, Shake Shack is always the move. My fiancé and I came to this location for a fast casual dinner. I was sad to see that they didn't offer dairy free milkshakes. They did have fun seasonal flavors though and we enjoyed an overly sweet Christmas Cookie milkshake. I got my usual Shack Burger which hit the spot. There was a lot of seating available. It was pretty much empty since it was the night after Thanksgiving. We ordered our food at a virtual kiosk and took a number. Someone came out and served us our food not too long after our orders. There are a bunch of other fast food chains nearby too. We enjoyed our time at this Shake Shack.

Messy and no food. Why aren't they cooking.

Actual worst restaurant ever. I'm not coming back because of the wait, the hygiene, the shouting in the kitchen, and the fact that I waited over 45 mins for a simple order. In fact, my impression of Shake Shack as a BRAND has gone down. (PS are the employees high at w

I've visited this Shake Shack so many times since opening. Generally, the food is OK and the customer service consistently is mediocre. Since opening they've transitioned almost exclusively to receiving customer orders via self-serve kiosks, as is how most other Shake Shacks operate in the area and region. However, they still have the capability to take customer orders with their employees. In a way the self-serve kiosk improve customer service as there is minimal contact with staff, however, I've gotten into the habit of ordering food on the mobile app to increase ordering accuracy and minimize employee interaction. This location thrives off of foot traffic from the local nightclubs in Dupont Circle. They easily serve hundreds of customers on Friday and Saturday nights. Consider ordering via the mobile app to reduce wait time which is my recommendation for all Shake Shack locations only because there is so much liberty in being able to pre-order food with the intent of spending minimal time in restaurants.

Food: 5/5 Shake Shack burger with tomatoes and lettuce is excellent, especially for the price. Smaller patty so you might go with a double, but the price climbs $3 to roughly $10 for that. Burger doesn't come with fries... Fries: 4/5 Crinkle fries but much much better than Ore-ida. Crisp, fresh and tasty. Tried the bacon cheese fries, which seems expensive at $6.49 for a single cardboard skiff, but they went a long way and could easily be split with someone. Shake: 4/5 Tried the oreo-cookie. Very tasty and the cookie crumbles were just the right size to get through the straw. Bit pricy at $6.50 for the small size portion, being one reason for less than full 5/5. Ambiance:. Nicer than it looks from the entry. Music was some rap with some hip hop flair from yesteryear like Earth Wind & Fire. The backroom has a loft and is pretty cool. There were a number of tables back there with street people who had maybe bought a drink and just hanging until they closed. They were quiet but one had what looked like a couple days of trash surrounding him at his feet and he was sleeping wrapped in a blanket. Not sure this is the look you want for arriving people sitting in this large seating section. Couple tables needed cleanup but that wasn't part of their process during the 60 minutes we were there. Bonus for staying open late! Definitely returning, especially for takeout.

Yes, I'm going there: this is a five star shake shack. While the food is as you would expect it just about any other of their locations, the service with a smile offered by every single staff member brings this place to the top of my shake shack list. By comparison, the store in Hollywood, California, just a few doors down from the Pantages theater, features an entire staff of people who seemingly forgot how to smile. Not here in DC; the young lady that took our order, another lady who brought our food out, and a third individual who just happened to be walking by towards the back... Each of them treated us like we were guests in their home. And as evidence that it was not a fluke, we made two separate orders; one for our burgers and fries, and the second one for our respective chocolate and vanilla shakes. Because, as my dad says in Vegas: "we're not here for a haircut." I don't know the next time I will be in Washington DC, but like so many places that we have visited around our great country, customer service, kindness, and courtesy all seem to be far superior in many locations outside of my native southern California. I suppose we could take a lesson on that to be a little nicer and slow down a little bit. I'm not gonna hold my breath.

They have a great list of unique rotating flavors, and it's always fun to come back to try out their new seasonal releases. A few of my favorites over the years have been their hibiscus sorbet -- a delightful dairy-free addition to their Hispanic Heritage Month flavors that is the perfect balance of tangy and sweet -- the cinnamon cardamom -- a super spiced ice cream that, despite being freezing cold, feels like you're about to drink a warm beverage -- and blueberry sour cream crumble. When I'm feeling less adventurous, they also have a really solid strawberry ice cream that uses real berries (none of that artificial nonsense you see in grocery stores) with a delightful fruity, slightly tangy flavor. There's usually a pretty long line, but it moves quite quickly since they don't allow samples. It's also a small space that gets crowded pretty easily, so I'd recommend taking your ice cream to go and enjoying it as you walk around Mt Pleasant or on the benches just below the entrance to Mount Desert.

They also don't let people sample, which is weird for an ice cream place. Overall, I would not recommend this place because paying $8+ to take a random chance on ice cream flavors is not worth it at all. At least let us sample first...

For the sorbet, I was recommended the Lemon Opal Basil and Sour Cherry flavors, and BABY... my taste buds were dancing! Then I grabbed my surprise coffee from Will. He made me an iced Oat Milk Dolce Delizia with a hint of vanilla, and it was right up my alley. After the very first sip, it was an instant connection... with the drink, of course. The vibes were so good that my friend and I ended up sitting there talking for a couple of hours. Between the incredible sorbet, my new favorite coffee order, and the cozy atmosphere, Dolcezza has officially inspired me to start going on late-night coffee hunts and yap sessions. I'll definitely be back! Oh, and fyi... it does get a bit crowded, BUT don't let that scare you away! Everyone was super considerate and didn't linger once they finished eating, so others had a chance to grab a seat and enjoy the space too. I've tried other DDL lattes from other coffee shops around the city and this one is by far the best. It's good hot and iced. The seasonal strawberry matcha is also very good. This place is great for the seasonal drinks and gelato flavors using local ingredients. My absolute favorite seasonal flavor is the Blackberries and Cream gelato. I ate it so much last summer that I could see the color of the gelato get darker as the season progressed and as the berries reached their peak. I got a few hand packed pints to keep in the freezer but they didn't last long. The mascarpone & berries is my favorite classic flavor. I've been to every Dolcezza location in DC and my favorite is the DuPont location. The baristas are chill and somehow their drinks taste better than the other locations. Not sure how that's possible but I notice a difference. I think it has something to do with how the drink order is entered at the register. At another location, I noticed my DDL latte was entered as a latte with DDL syrup and it was noticeably off. Not sweet at all. When I asked the barista he said there was no DDL button but at DuPont the drink is perfect every time. I'm not usually focused on nitpicking but if I'm paying $10 for a coffee, I expect the taste to be consistent regardless of location. Back to DuPont. This location has decent seating but definitely isn't appropriate for longer study sessions during busy times. There's a large communal table and bar style seating along the front window that is great for people watching (or construction watching). It's conveniently located, about a 10 minute walk away from the DuPont metro. Is Dolcezza expensive? Yes. Will I continue to use my discretionary income on $10 coffee and gelato. Yes, because it makes me happy and it's an act of self care.
