We were celebrating my friend's birthday and enjoyed bubbles, the Asian Salad, and the Shrimp Louie Salad. Everything was perfection and full of flavor. This has been the worst experience I've had a restaurant. Soft opening or not. Even my fiance who is a patient person said it was terrible. Where to begin 1. It took forever for our drinks and appetizer to come out. 2. No one bothered to check on us the whole time after taking our order. 3. The servers were all over the place. Apparently they were short handed. ALSO. One of the waitresses or maybe she was the owner/wife was literally wearing slides. Like foot exposed slides. That has to be a health code / safety violation. 4. We waited at least 30 mins for our entrees to come and once we flagged the waitress down, she admitted to us our order was on hold and was never sent to the kitchen. So we would have been waiting there all freaking night. So unacceptable. She didn't even bother to comp the appetizer or two badly made drinks we received. We didn't even want the burgers at the point and asked for the check. 5. The sampler plate was not good aside for the wings. Everything was lukewarm or cold. There was no marinara sauce for the mozzarella sticks either. A bunch of unnecessary stuff on it too like a spiraled carrot salad and lemon wedges. In all, what a disappointment. We were eager to try out Zac's since we enjoyed The Office for many years. I like the new layout! Far more practical and more comfortable than the old Office. Service was excellent: friendly, just enough drink refills, fast, etc. Zac's has great employees. We had the chicken club sandwich and the chicken Caesar wrap. The club sandwich was very dry -- chicken was dry, bread was too thin, over-toasted, brittle and oddly enough...cold. The chicken Caesar wrap was slightly better; however, I wasn't expecting it to be hot. Not sure if the menu said that, so that might be on me. The problem with a hot wrap with lots of lettuce is that the lettuce gets wilted very fast and then even a little brown/slimy. The fries served with each sandwich were great! Crispy outside, tender inside...awesome taste. Portions are big! The pricing is very fair for the amount of food served. To be honest, I think they could make things 20-25% smaller and still feel justified with the same pricing. I hope the items I highlighted improve. Not sure if I'll be back but if they're still around after 9-12 months then I'll be sure to give them another try. read more

I went today for the SOFT opening of the restaurant and the food was good but nothing that really stood out to me. The service at the time was OK considering that it was a soft opening so it was understandable that not everything was working perfectly. The drinks did take a long time to come out though, the food came out before the drinks did. The jalepeno poppers were good and it came with ranch and sweet and sour sauce which made the poppers really good. I recommend dipping it in the sweet and sour sauce. Zac's burger was good but it seems like the meat needs more seasoning since I could taste the bread more than I could taste the meat. The prickly pear margarita was delicious and I would recommend if you like tequila with a slight smoky aftertaste. read more

The Asian Chicken Salad and Chicken Cobb Salad were both fresh, flavorful, and generous, and the calamari was outstanding - fresh, crispy, and perfectly prepared. First, I believe this restaurant has real potential, and I sincerely hope to see it improve. I live close enough to walk here and would happily become a once-a-week customer if the food finds its footing. I also plan to update this review as things evolve. The bar looked inviting, although the dining experience was disrupted by two bar patrons repeatedly screaming at a football game just a few feet from our table. I expect some enthusiasm in a sports bar, but the volume felt out of place in a family restaurant and made it difficult to enjoy our meal. The restaurant may need to think about how it separates, or balances, the bar atmosphere and nearby dining area. The larger issue, though, was the food. The kitchen still seems to need considerable refinement. Several dishes arrived topped with unusually long carrot shavings that were awkward to eat and didn't seem to add much. Both of our salads appeared to use a prepackaged lettuce mix, and the dressing tasted more like something from a packaged grocery-store salad than a freshly made restaurant dressing. The potato skins were bland and hadn't been cooked long enough to develop the browning and crispness that would have given them more flavor. We order Brussels sprouts almost everywhere they're offered, and unfortunately, these were the least successful we've had. Pan frying or deep frying them may have produced the crunchy texture we usually love, however they were completely softened due to being smothered in a sweet, dressing-like sauce that seemed to contain citrus, possibly orange juice. That flavor profile overwhelmed the sprouts and made the dish feel heavy and strangely casserole-like. Serving a different sauce, and only on the side for dipping, would make a substantial difference. The roasted cauliflower steak may have the most potential. It could become a distinctive and memorable dish, but ours felt unfinished. The cauliflower was cooked through, yet it lacked the deep browning and caramelization needed to create flavor and texture. With better execution, this could be one of the restaurant's standout offerings. There was also a small technology miss: I tried to complete the post-meal survey through Toast, but the app said I had already submitted it when I had not. We may simply have ordered the wrong dishes, so we intend to return and try a few more things. I genuinely hope I'll eventually have to eat my words, because our area needs another good restaurant and we're rooting for this one. One can only go to Laurel Street so many times before branching out. And we want to branch out. At this early stage, bringing in an experienced restaurant or culinary consultant to evaluate the recipes, preparation, and execution might be a worthwhile investment. The location and concept have promise; the food just needs to rise to meet them. If so, I would happily frequent this place even with a too-rowdy bar. read more

Between the delicious food and great service, this is another destination spot in San Carlos for both sporting events and just looking for great food. We watched the 49er game there. Lots of screens and seating options. Apps are plentiful and tasty. We had the nachos with chicken. The wings also look great. And then the crown jewel: the Zac burger. Easily top 5 best burger. Since I loved the office, I really wanted to love the new Zac's bar and grill. Unfortunately food was disappointing and they really should have kept the chef from the office! We tried several dishes, and what we really enjoyed was the variety--there are options for someone looking for a lighter meal, as well as plenty of choices for when you're ready to indulge and enjoy a little guilty pleasure. Paired with the mashed potatoes and veggies, it made for a comforting and satisfying dish. We also enjoyed the bay shrimp salad-I like that the lettuce was chopped which made it easier to chew. The atmosphere was another highlight. The space had a nice ambience with a fun, relaxed neighborhood-bar-and-grill vibe. Even more memorable was the hospitality. I went to Zac's for dinner with my partner and we sat at the bar. I really like the ambiance, and the bartender was friendly but he didn't seem to have more than a minimal knowledge of the menu. He said he was new and this was his 4th or 5th shift. I ordered the skirt steak (medium rare) which came with mashed potatoes and broccoli. None of the 3 items was hot nor did they give off steam. They were room temp, at best. I sent the plate back, and when the female bartender returned with the food and set the plate down, I could see that the meat was now medium well with hardly any pink. Then I pulled out a piece of hair that was partially under the meat that looked like it was either from a beard or some other part of the body and held it up for the server to see. She watched me pick out the hair and then asked if I wanted them to do the entire plate over again. Of course I said yes. Finally the food came out steaming and was very good. Normally, a restaurant will comp the food or at least a glass of wine when something like this happens, but there was no offer of any type of compensation. I'd like to go back but it's going to be a while. read more
