Since I've moved to the medical center I have been searching for hair salons to take care of me. Before when I was on bellaire I was so used to paying 5-10 bucks for a basic cut. If it sucked I'd just move on since it wasn't a huge investment. I looked around the area and a haircut was just too much from a decent salon so I went with the budget cutters. TGF. They were serviceable for awhile, but on my last trip I was very unhappy with my cut. So much that was the last straw. So have been looking for a new place. This spot got 5 stars from a yelper that I actually have met in person. It's minutes away from work, so I figured why not give it a try? It's a tiny spot right next to darque tan. The parking lot is tiny but at least they have a private lot. The prices are fair and I enjoyed my results. Also if it is your first time they give you a FREE shampoo. I will be back. read more

Even called a client to make aure she could take time because I decided to get my hair bleached at the last minute. Diligently checked to see if my scalp was burning. She definitley knows her stuff. Boone is basically an awesome hair surgeon. She works quickly with speed and finesse and really pays attention to detail. She has a lot of experience and will pause for a second or two to make sure your haircut is looking great as she works, just like a sculptor. She puts in the best effort to cut the hair for us guys since we're not really good at giving hair descriptions more elaborate than "uhh..make it good?" Maria has also cut my hair before, and I'd choose either one any day. I've been going here for 3 years since it's easy to get to from the med centre, pricing is great for men's haircuts ($16), and the quality is everything I want. I know a few surgeons who get their hair cut here too, if that means anything. They really try their best to accommodate walk-ins, but for the best experience, call 24h in advance because they schedule appointments as customers call in during the day. I can't comment on women's haircuts because I've never been a woman. But I've observed many clients come in and be happy to see Boone and Maria, so I infer they have a good customer-client relationship. This is a great place that will leave you looking good for the inexpensive price. Don't be a tool who spends $40 for a "Level 9 supreme master Jedi hair whisperer stylist" haircut when you can get a great cut for $16 and be in and out in no time. Bottom-line: Enter a man-beast, leave looking presentable and charming. It's what I do every time. I was in the area and wanted a nearby place to wax my eyebrows. Looked on yelp and decided to make a quick stop here. I am not usually picky with waxing my eyebrows at random places cause how hard could it be to do a $10 eyebrow wax? I was wrong- When she finished, she let me look at the mirror to take a look but I usually think it'll be fine so I told her it's okay. The next morning when I was putting in my contacts, I noticed that the lady messed up one of my eyebrows.. She accidentally waxed 1/3 of my eyebrow off............ Lesson learned. read more

Came in for a haircut around 6pm (they close at 7) and was seated at 630. Unfortunately, due to a combination of poor communication and timing, I received a pretty terrible haircut. I'm sure that the hairdresser had a long day, but I definitely got the feeling that she just wanted to go home. Maria is an excellent stylist! I was so tired of spending $200+ on highlights in Rice Village, so I followed a friend's recommendations to try Zam's. I'm so glad I did! I have long baby fine hair, and lots of it. I was looking to get a solid base coat with two colors of foil highlights. Maria was able to reproduce the look I was going for exactly. She followed up with a great haircut. After spending three hours in the salon (my hair always takes three hours anywhere) she charged me a very reasonable fee of $130. I consider that a $70 savings! Maria definitely did as good a job as pricy salons. I also appreciate that she didn't try to sell me any salon products while I was there either. If you go to T&T Salon, ask for Boone. She is the best kept secret at any salon for the last 20 years!! I know because I have been following her around Houston since junior high. My 2 little ones go get their haircut from Auntie Boone, who always has lollipops for them after their haircuts. Her prices are very reasonable whether you want a kid's cut, adult haircut and/or style, perms, or color. (I've done all of them and it is such an incredible deal compared to other places.) She gives great advice about what you should do with your hair whether it is a cut, style, or color. I come in with pics from magazines and she can tell what will work or not. Saved me from having some really bad hair days!! I would highly recommend! Atmosphere: It's almost like a Cheers, but for HAIR - where everybody knows your name. They even have their own version of Norm, the owner of the uniform shop next door, who sits around in their salon when he's a little bored. Great central location in Houston (Holcombe and Greenbriar - down the road from the Village and Medical center) I YELP when I'm out of town, but forget to YELP my own favorite locals. read more

Executive Summary: Maria is an excellent stylist, does not yack incessantly, and the prices are right on. I have been going to this salon for a number of years. Under prior ownership Maria would occasionally cut my hair and since she has become the new owner she cuts it all the time. Maria is friendly and extremely professional. She knows just how much you want to talk (or not talk) and she always remembers how I like my hair cut. I get compliments of the non-creepy type so I guess it looks good. A guy's review: I'm nit-picky when it comes to haircuts but I've always left Zam's feeling satisfied. I've been going for over a year and had my hair cut by every stylist that's worked there. Generally I ask that it be short, textured and proportionate, although I've gotten more complex cuts as well. They seem to only hire experienced people that know what they're doing. I feel you get the quality of a higher-end salon for the price and expediency of a corner barber shop. At $16 I think it's more than reasonable (tip them - they deserve it). Scheduling is easy - you can make an appointment with very little time in advance and they often stay later than their posted business hours. read more

The barber (Soraya) was nice and polite but she went too short on my front hairs despite my explicit constant request not to do so. I am going to use cap for a week or so. Wouldn't recommend. I went in for a trim. Came out with extremely uneven layers (see above). Side note my hair was all the same length with no layers when I went in. The hair stylist probably was the worst I have ever met so far. I lost it on her, that wasn't nice but I really couldn't think of a better way to say I didn't like my hair cut. She asked me same questions and when I answered it twice she appeared like it was the first time...if you get a hair stylist asks you same questions and can't remember what your answers are, you probably have her. Fist of all, She was on her phone when she was working with me in the beginning. She presented understanding of what I wanted: just shorter, no new style or any thing; I said I want it shorter, so my hair would look more curly. she said, yeah when your hair is shorter it would look more curly, if it too long then it would pull it down and strengthen it. So I thought she understood that I wanted it to be curly (my hair is naturally curly), she also suggested more layers, which I was agreed up on. Everything is Good! Next thing I know, she cut my hair into a totally boy style and strengthening my hair when she was drying it. I lost it, man. I said why are you straightening it!? She said "what do you want? I'm not going to argue with you!" At that point what I want is not even possible anymore, unless she could makes my hair grow. During the hair cut, I asked her what the difference between cutting girls hair and boys'. She said there were not difference, girls 'just took longer. You won't get an answer like that from a real professional, would you? I could have been politer: don't say anything, just go back home and cry for hours, but instead I told her I didn't like it and I only cried for one hour after I got into the car. I didn't expect I could be so dramatic either... A bad hair cut can bring so much bad in you. Who would thought! In general, it was a very bad experience. But it's only this hair stylist. I don't know about other ones. Also, it seems like a good boy hair cut place. I saw cute boys with cool hair cut sitting in there. The place was clean. She didn't charge me for the hair cut. This place is conveniently located near the Medical center. I have heard good things about all the stylists but I would like to specially mention Boone. She is highly skilled, and takes time to understand what one is looking for. She gave me an amazing layered bob before a conference meeting I went to . Felt sharp and confident in my cut and she had set it really well. She has a good eye for style and gives useful tips how to style the bangs and more. The price is reasonable too, got a shampoo, cut and blow dry for a well set hair style all for $35 She does her job so cheerfully, you leave that place feeling great! read more

I love supporting local businesses. Jackie has been cutting my hair since 2001 (at least when I live in Houston). She does a great job and always is around. The decor of the salon isn't that modern, however you get a good haircut, personalized service with a smile, and a good deal. Had an appointment with Maria after hearing good things here, and I'm so glad that I did! She listened to exactly what I wanted and then communicated the whole time about what she was doing. She spoke about the process and my hair, gave her suggestions, and made sure I was on board as she was working with my hair. (For example, explaining why she was cutting layers as she was, and asking me if I was okay with the length). Constant, on-target communication that made me feel both heard and taken care of. PLUS I got the perfect haircut that I wanted (Even though I just gave her keywords of my vision and she made it happen). It was also quick--in and out of there in less than 45 minutes. Yes, it's more casual than fancy salons, but those places come with price tags that hurt, and I do not think tthey could have topped Maria's work. $35 for women's cut, which is mid-price and a good value for what you get. I just want to add that I've been coming to Zam's for months now, exclusively with Boone. I just wanted to update my review because I'm just very happy to be here. Boone is able to give me the cut I want and for a good price. She always squeezes me in too. I like to get haircuts that aren't too over the top, kind of like tamed undercuts or whatever they call them. Sometimes I just get a high fade and a combover. She makes me feel comfortable and reminds me when she's out of town too. I also like the two Maria's that are there. They also give guys haircuts, especially the Maria who sits right beside Boone.
