So to keep that tradition (ignoring the fact that I'm just lazy about it, as my wife would tell you), we went to a hair salon that his son has been to for his hair cut. Parking is on the street and they take reservations, though I got lucky in getting a seat right away without one. My stylist knew what she was doing, asking what trimmer blade size I wanted. She suggested I go one half step higher than my ask, than got to work. Buzz, then detailing, then a a shampoo, then final cut with scissors. And she took care of my cowlick so it wouldn't be so pronounced. Probably 15 minutes from start to finish. Fifteen dollars (including shampooing). Just so no one is confused, Bích Nga is pronounced bik nyah. It's a Sino-Vietnamese term (#1) that denotes a beautiful (nga), blue green gem (bích). The latter is like sapphire/jade (bích ngọc) and has significant meaning overall. Midtown has been home to a lot of very pricey hair salons, but Bích Nga is a nostalgic reminder that this neighborhood was once home to a number of Asian owned businesses. The outside of the shop is frozen in time and the old school charm is undeniable. It's a quiet shop, since they don't play music and not every station is occupied with a stylist. The weekends are usually fairly packed but the waiting area is limited to a few chairs and a couch. Walk-ins are welcome but I always recommend calling ahead of time and setting up an appointment. I still remember when men's haircuts were a cool $10. After a few rounds of pandemic price surges, now it's $15 per cut. Even at $15, it's still a deal compared to the $50 equivalent, which is every men's salon in the immediate vicinity. The owner is Huong, who along with Cam, run this shop. There is no credit card or digital payment accepted here. It's strictly cash only. They've always been consistent with my hair. No frills and a fairly quick cut all things considered. Favorite barber/hair place since moving to Houston 8 years ago. First heard about the place from some college friends as a cheap, reliable shop nearby. Staff are friendly and speak primarily Vietnamese but are welcoming to all. I live in Galveston now but come here often when I stop by houston. $13 for shorter length guys hair. I went in for a haircut this week, I haven't been back here in a long time because I started going to M Salon. It's cheaper here so I thought I'd go back since I just need a trim. I wanted layers. Violet cut my hair. She asked if I wanted to keep the length and I said yes so she said she'd only cut off less than an inch, just split ends. She cut off several inches and did a terrible job with my layers. I feel like Joan Jett! Now I have to go to M Salon for them to fix my cut. You get what you pay for. Price was $35. read more

AMAZING fade, but the stylist didn't seem super familiar with how to work with 3B hair (very wavy/slightly curly). Overall, a great experience, and I would recommend them. Excellent service for the price! The only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is because I told my stylist how my hair reacts to certain cutting techniques and she full on didn't listen. I had a 3:30 appointment but they didn't take me till 4 (after I had to say something twice) for a wedding. I had no idea what the pricing was. I found them on Yelp and they were close to my hotel. The lady did her best with her tools and knowledge but my hair looked like how I could do it myself if I tried. It looked nice but did not look like I got it done. I came here as it was a recommendation from my girlfriend. I was able to call around 10 am and set up a same day appointment in the early afternoon. There is a window of free parking on the street in front of the shop, I cannot recall the timing but you can't park there in the early morning (i think 7-9 am) and afternoon (maybe 4-6pm). I walked in the place and was seated within 30 seconds. I showed a photo of what I wanted my haircut to be. The lady was took a good look and knew what to do. She was pretty diligent in the bald fade section of my haircut. She offered a shampoo and conditioner before cutting the topside, which I agreed. The water was not too cold yet not lukewarm, which is in the realm of my comfort. Once done, we went back to the chair and got on the scissor work. I asked for a quarter inch to be cut off. This is probably where the miscommunication came into play. She may have misheard me as she was showing how much to cut off by putting her two fingers on my hair and measuring it out. At first she had about 2 inches and after a few back and forth of lesser cut we came down to a little less than an inch. The precision of cut was good. However on the blow drying of the hair, she proceeded to dry it as though I was an early 90s news anchor. I have never worn my hair like that before nor did my photo show any representation of a hairstyle such as that. Luckily, I went home to wet my hair to reverse those effects. The cut was $15 (including shampoo/conditioner). Overall, a good price I was looking for in a haircut and will try again next time with a more clear cut direction of how I want my hair to turn out. read more

Called in to see if they had a spot opening for a quick trim and the lady said to come in and wait a little and she can squeeze me in. Sammie usually cuts my hair but another lady ended up cutting my hair. I felt rushed because she wasn't going to wash my hair at first but I asked if she could. Before Sammie, I've never stuck with the same stylist twice because nobody gave me a haircut I truly liked as soon as I stepped out of the salon. She is patient and listens to your preferences but also assertive and honest about what she thinks will work for your face shape. The search is over! This place is everything I've been looking for! Close to where I live, dumpy on the outside, surprisingly cute and clean (!) on the inside. I was sketched out by the run down warehousy outside and wondering if the $15 haircut would be worth another hair disaster in search for a decent cheap-as-dirt haircut. But as I rounded the corner, lo-and-behold, the Mecedes Benz parked outside somehow quelled my fears enough to at least give it a chance. Upon entering... soooo cute! There are really plush (not cracked!) leather chairs and big screen tv in the waiting area that leads into a 6 chair salon where three stylists were working in a neat, clean, finished space. The stylst were all styled and made up and looked like they knew what they were doing (I know this is expected at "normal" salons, but it's not so common at the cheap ones!) Violet took me back to get my hair washed, nothing too special, got a little splashed and I had to watch the lady in the back eat her midday lunch. I was taken over to her station. I showed her what I wanted (I had an exact picture) and she confirmed the idea to me verbally. Long story short, she did a great job! It wasn't til the final seconds of styling that I saw the haircut that I had asked for. She did a great job with very little direction. It took about an hour total, she had to stop briefly a couple time to talk on the phone but I'd rather have her stop than end up giving me a mutlitasking mullet. She used a razor the whole time (which is fine with me, I know other people have issues with it) AND IT WAS ONLY $15!!!
