This dive bar that recalls moments from the 70s is right on the main strip in Sonora California. The bartender is super helpful and they have a nice selection of drinks. And then the 70s called. They have ashtrays up and down the bar that are being used by patrons who smoke in this bar without any ventilation. The smell from the cigarettes hits you like a pacific ocean wave as you enter the bar. There is no apologies nor concessions made for patrons who don't smoke and it is one of the most outrageous features in a business that wants to draw customers that I've ever seen. I don't get it! And I don't recommend this place if you have any allergies to smoke or cigarettes. It's really unfortunate, because it could be really a nice place to just have a drink with friends and play a game of pool. SMH! read more

I came in with my service dog that is only 5 pounds the bartenders were rude smoking a cigarette while serving beer. Completely unsanitary! They asked for papers. Illegal. (You may not ask for the dog to demonstrate the task it provides. It is also illegal to ask for "proof" of any kind, including documentation or a vest, as neither the federal or state government requires it. Showed up on Feb uary 14th at 1pm ordered a shot of dry gin and played some pool the bartender said min ten dollar limit but if I ordered two it would be eight and she would be ok with that I said thank you much appreciated I played five games of pool in an hours time and had two shots. Whenever I travel I like to get a 'taste' of the local bar scene. The bartender is great. He was on our order toot sweet. The drinks are inexpensive. A Bombay gin and tonic a double jack on the rocks and two draft beers 19 bucks. Screaming deal! The pool table is shabby but flat. Surprisingly the cues were straight. If you've heard hear a story about a bar fight in Sonora, it probably happened here. That said, I try to stay away from here as much as possible. Unfortunately a few friends like the strong drinks they pour, so I usually end up here once during a visit. Its an old place probably been around since the town itself. Its a hole in the wall kind of place, but more pit and less hole It always smells, has the worst patrons, and zero customer service. Don't even think of going near the bathrooms!! Went with Joey C. to visit Lacey P. in her village and ended up in a drunken haze requesting cigarettes. Who doesn't smoke when they're drunk nowadays? So, what's better than a bar you can smoke in? A bar that sells cigarettes you can smoke inside! Yep, we were officially in a Village. Joey C. put it quite accurately when he described the village as one of those pictures you see in a Wells Fargo of a Gold Rush Boom-town. There is a small dance floor, a pool table, American beers, hard liquor and live music - quite the happening small-town place. My favorite dive bar in town. This place has definate character. Its not everyday you can get cheap liquor, smoke inside, schmooze with tweakers and weirdos, see an occasional altercation, and scam on young hot men all in one place. There is definate crowd diversity here. Gets really crowded on Fri./Sat. nights, you'll always run into someone here. Also the randomly hot cowboy singer is a good draw as well. Sometimes it takes forever to get a drink or to settle a tab, so bring cash to speed up the process. read more

I've had a few bad experiences here. The first time I went to the Iron Horse was about a year ago. I'd just turned 21 and was really excited to go bar hopping (especially in a place that allows smoking). I'm from out of state and hadn't gotten a new license yet. When I handed mine to the bartender she exclaimed that it was fake and refused to give it back. It took 10 minutes and a younger bar owner looking at it for her to give me back my ONLY form of I.D. She didn't even apologize - she just said her daughter had one like that when she was 16. And she short changed me and said I was lying when I told her so. I was pissed. The second time I went here was because I'd been drinking over at The Office (which is amazing by the way) and my boyfriend wanted to stop over at the Iron Horse for a drink and smoke. I went with him reluctantly. I was halfway through my drink when a huge man came up to me and called me a faggot. He then proceeded to grab my ass and not let go when I told him to. First of all, yes, I am gay but he had NO way of knowing it. My boyfriend and I were sitting pretty far apart because this bar is usually full of drunken idiots. I'm sure he only thought we were gay because I have quite a few piercings and my hair way dyed purple at the time. Either way it was ridiculous. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars is that the drinks are really strong. I could see someone getting into a bar fight or even raped here pretty easily. It's the sleaziest place around. I'd suggest trying The Office or even the Sonora Pub first. read more
