Zanzibar is where most of the UCSD population go if they want to stray away from their usual $5 Subway/ Burger King/ Tapex crap and eat legit food. I only came here once and had the Turkey Bacon Panini with a side of potato chips. The panini was fresh and crispy and the potato chips were crispy. The portion size is decent enough for me to take some of the chips and half of the panini to go. (They have to go boxes on the counter which I thought was considerate). The one weird thing about Zanzibar is that not many students tend to eat here. I went during lunch time and it was mostly the "older" crowd that works at the Student Services Center and around. I was very happy to see Zanzibar pop up on the UCSD campus - one can only eat so many Burger King burgers and Rubios tacos. Their food is on the pricier side, but it is very delicious. I like the "hot" turkey/bacon sandwich - it's filling as a lunch, and comes with some of the most delicious chips that have graced my lunch tray in a very long time. Zanzibar Cafe is my breath of fresh air on the UCSD campus. When you have a choice of Zanzibar or generic fast food (see: Panda Express, Subway, Burger King), why would you choose anything else? My favorite aspect of Zanzibar is the selection. I think I could come here every day of the week and still find something new and exciting to try. They have a great list of salads, soups, sandwiches (hot and cold), and burgers. One of my favorite standouts is the soup of the day and half a sandwich combo. I haven't had a soup that I haven't liked (although I'd have to say the butternut squash was my favorite) and the vegetable sandwich compliments it perfectly (especially if you dip it in your soup!). I'd suggest asking for the slaw on the side rather than the chips, especially if you're not a potato chip fan like me. Normally, I am not a big cole slaw fan, but the version here is really good and not slimy or saucy. The main compliant I keep hearing is the price and that is ridiculous. Most of the food here is in the 7 dollar range and that's pretty much the same price you pay for half the quality at Tacone or Croutons. One of the best places to eat on campus, although I might not rate it so high if the competition or location were different. My go-to meals are the mac and cheese; tuna melt; and shrimp and kale salad. The house salad is also really good, with a decent portion of avocado. Their sides are generally very good, but I have experienced some issues. My favorite is to get half slaw, half chips. The chips are consistently awesome, housemade and well-fried. The slaw has always been good, except the other day when my slaw wasn't dressed at all. I took it to the counter, and was told the slaw was pre-mixed and they didn't have the dressing to give me. The side salads are good, and I have had the occasional miss. The balsamic vinaigrette is tasty and very strong. Occasionally the greens starting to turn. Their beer and wine selection has decreased over the years, but they generally have some good local brews on tap, which is what I look for. They have Torani syrups for italian sodas, and that is my go-to drink option. read more

It's so cute inside...they were hanging up art which included pictures of gels when we were there today, and playing music from Death Cab, Sufjan Stevens, and Iron and Wine. They have a stage area, and the decor is very stylish. The coffee was better than the other coffee on campus, and the food was too. I had the turkey bacon pannini and while there wasn't much spinach and the bacon wasn't super crispy, it was better than a lot of the other options on campus. And the house chips are good. I came here plenty of times, but forgot to give them a review until now. The on-campus Zanzibar Cafe mainly serves pricy lunch food. Given that, I come here a lot when I crave for food that's not TapEx or Burger King. I've only tried the turkey bacon grilled panini and the chicken pesto grilled sandwich here. Both were good! All the ingredients tasted fresh and the combination of flavors were very scintillating! The potato chips were good too as a side, and this is coming from a person who ABSOLUTELY HATES eating chips like Doritos and Lays. I don't know why, but the Zanzibar chips tasted really fresh and didn't have that greasy, gross feeling other chips have. Now, if you're strapped on money, then I suggest you come there during their happy hours (4-6pm, M-F). $4 teriyaki wings are amazing, although you only get 6 pieces. $5 Mediterranean plate gets you this salsa/ceviche thing and hummus with olives along with sliced bread, and while it's not particularly filling, it really tastes healthy and delicious! $6 cheesebread is also very good. Happy hour also serve beer and wine, but to me, consuming alcohol on campus is still an awkward concept. I can just imagine getting a little buzz before going to lecture/discussion...but yeah, in case you like to drink, they have a good selection of IPAs as well as wines. Finally! Something new, and GOOD at UCSD Price Center!!! It opened up in "The Loft" on the second level of the PC expansion. I've only been once so far, and I got the turkey/bacon panini. It was delicious. The potato chips were fantastically greasy and salty. Mmmm. One coworker got the same sandwich, but with coleslaw, and it looked great! This place is actually pretty good for being campus food. It has the most 'restaurant vibe' to it and is perfect if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of academia for a little while. I got the butternut squash soup and it was very delicious. It had a creamy consistency with a subtle hint of butternut. It was a decent amount of food (which is nice because I hate walking around campus carrying my leftover food) . The price here is about maybe a little over a $1 more than the prices you'd find at the rest of the on campus food places. Definitely one of the hippest places on campus with a nice socially welcoming vibe. HA! how's that for being a socially dead campus?! The place gets packed during the lunch hour, but they're pretty efficient with getting your order and food out to you quickly. Since they're so busy, tables tend to get a little bit dirty, but not excessively. The food here is great. Although prices tend to run slightly higher than other eateries on campus, the quality of the food here simply can't be surpassed. I love how they incorporate grilled veggies into their sandwiches. GENIUS! The Mediterranean sandwich and oven roasted turkey melt are definitely a must. If you're ever given any suggestions on the soups from the cashiers, take it! They suggest the most oddly sounding, yet delicious soups ever. I'd opt out of getting the mac n cheese here; it's not much to miss and you can definitely get better from Kraft's. The homemade coleslaw is the healthier and better tasting option to get than the homemade chips; also, you won't get a sore throat and oil slushing/sloshin around in your stomach (if that were possible) from eating the coleslaw. 3.5 stars, but i bumped it up for being so hip! read more

Came here recently and had the chicken pesto hot sandwich + side of greens (would have tried the chips but gave them up for Lent; they looked delicious). The sandwich was good, but it didn't taste like a chicken pesto sandwich at all. It honestly tasted like a sweet bbq chicken sandwich, and I don't think there was tomato in mine as advertised. So it was good, but not in the traditional sense of a chicken pesto that you'd expect. It's so different from the one at Croutons, which is my usual there. The side of greens comes with balsamic vinegarette, which wasn't bad either. It was $10 for the sandwich and side, so it's pricey, but the food is quality. The rest of my party ordered shrimp tacos and lobster bisque which they enjoyed. All the other food options look solid as well. Love the atmosphere, love the selection, love that they serve craft beer AND wine! I'm just glad a place like this exists on campus. I will return for lunch or happy hour soon :) read more

Checked this out at lunchtime 'cause of proximity and because they seem like they have a pretty laid back vibe - they serve beer and wine, and several options of coffee. I tried the chicken & black bean quesadilla, which was ok, but definitely a bit pricey. I happened to be there in time for the Taco Tuesday special, which was, instead of $9 for three pieces of quesadilla, it was $2.50 a piece. I didn't really know what the cashier meant by "pieces", i.e. how big they'd be, so I ordered 2 pieces. I also ordered the Pear Anthem cider. They had three flavors of cider and about 6 beers on tap with enough of a variety to please the average beer drinker, at $6/16 oz. I liked the cider, but was kind of disappointed by the size of the quesadilla. It was tiny (see pic)! Plus, I came across a lot more dry, hardened tortilla than I'd have liked to. I figured I'd eat and then decide if I wanted something else to go, and I ended up getting a cup of vegetarian chili to go. The quesadilla wasn't bad - it kind of tasted like the southwestern eggrolls from Chili's (I know, classy comparison, but it did!), and I did really like the accompanying salsa. I dined with a friend who gets the turkey burger everytime she goes, and she enjoyed her meal and the chips that came with it, as well as the White Ale she ordered. I enjoyed the cup of chili enough. Topped with sour cream and loaded up with beans and veggies, it had a good flavor to it. There were just these giant chunks of zucchini in it that I could have done without. And while the accompanying cornbread was a nice surprise, it was disappointing to take a bite and discover the staleness of the bread. Womp womp. Just now I realized I paid $17 for a lunch where the best part was the bottled beer. The service wasn't bad, but it could have been better - when I was in line to get the chili with several people behind me, I was held up when the girl in front of me ordered a latte and the lone cashier abandoned the line to make the drink for her. They should really have more people on deck, at least one more person, when it's as busy as it was for lunchtime. I work at UCSD and although I try not to eat out for lunch too often, I really can't resist heading to Zanzibar from time to time! My friend always gets the chicken pesto sandwich, and I always get the turkey bacon melt, which is absolutely AMAZING, imho! I tried breakfast once, and it was equally delicious. They have nice presentations, and the ingredients are always super fresh. I also have tried my friend's pesto sandwich, but for me it's a little too bready as it's served on focaccia. The turkey bacon melt is done in the panini press and it's crispy, cheesy and bacon-y. Beat that! The side dishes for lunch are just as good as the mains, which to me is a huge plus! You come for a sandwich, but you leave with either WARM, home-made potato chips, or crispy (mayo-free!) Asian slaw. They serve huge portions when you eat there, and still pretty good when you get to-go. It's so hard to choose between chips and slaw, and unfortunately they won't let you have both, which I think is kinda lame. The staff is super nice, and it has a great laid-back vibe. They have cool music playing, yummy baked goods, and they even serve beer and wine! I really enjoy going there, and it's way more comfy than sitting in the bustling Price Center for lunch. Cheers for the best place to eat on campus! Such an amazing place to let loose and relax in between classes or before a big exam. The clientele are mainly professors or other business people and students with deeper pockets. I always order the blackened fish sandwich with side of greens and an upgrade of the vegetarian chili. This is my favorite lunch at UCSD. The Fish sandwich has this amazing aioli and the meal overall is healthy. For around $15 The ambiance is a little hipster just like the biomedical library. The fish tacos here are so good!!! That's basically the only thing I get when I come but that's because I'm picky and I must say it never disappoints. Good food, good music, good environment. Very relaxing place to just hang out in between classes or to have lunch with someone. I see some people studying here time to time too. My daughters wedding reception was at the Loft on the ucsd campus and the catering company was Zanzibar Café. Erin Campbell and her team from Zanzibar made our amazing day even more amazing. The only reason I'll ever come here is for happy hour deals on campus. It's not really a great spot for food unless you're looking to have something more upscale (read:pricey) than PC fast food, but it's only marginally better. Happy hour is from 4-6 and all beers on tap are $4.50, and wines are $5.50. They have a pretty limited selection, maybe 8-10 beers and about 6 wines. They have deals on some of the smaller plates, and I got fries for about $4 which were pretty good, and it was a generous portion. Friends usually choose this place over any other on-campus eatery for a lunch date. The place is pretty big as it has taken occupancy of the Loft on the UCSD campus. During the day and night, this place is usually bustling with students, staff, and faculty members. There is plenty of seating available and a wide variety of seats to choose from depending on what you're feeling into. The service is pretty quick. My first time here, I've ordered the Chicken Pesto Flatbread with house chip. The sandwich was delicious. The chicken was not too dry and the food was very warm when it came out. The chip was amazing. These chips are freshly made to order and are quite warm you receive it. I've came back multiple times and have ordered the same Chicken Pesto sandwich many more times; however, the quality has definitely not been consistent. The last time I've ordered it, the sandwich was a bit over cooked. The bread was tough and burnt while the chicken was a bit more dry. The pesto was also drier than how it suppose to be. Also to my disappointment were the chips. I've ordered the house chips alone during the Social Hours (4-6pm) multiple times and the quality has decreased. The chips were not as crisp as the first time I've been here. In fact, I've had some of my chips too soft to its touch and some of them were over burnt. The consistency of the food has definitely taken its toll I believe I've also tried the breakfast one day. I believe my dish was called the Farmer's Scramble that consisted of potatoes, eggs, sausages, and tomato sauce. This was a simple scramble. The eggs were not overcooked and the blend of all the ingredients is just what you look for when you want a simple breakfast. The ingredients were not the freshest, but it will do. However, for the price (~$6.50), it is not worth the price. In addition to their food, I've also came here for my morning fixes of coffee. I always order a vanilla latte. The quality of the latte are not as great as I would prefer it to be as it is usually on the sweeter side. However, I still come here for coffee because they usually have a $1 off coupon for expresso drinks from the PEG coupon book. Zanzibar Cafe is this cozy little bar and food place in the second level of Price Center on the UCSD campus. I never really went here because I thought it was mainly a bar, but wow was I wrong! The day I visited, I ordered the vegetarian panini with a mixed green salad. Since this place is pretty small, there wasn't a lot of places to choose to sit for a party more than 5, so we sat on the pretty glass table on the corner. It would have been perfect if it was not for 2 things: 1) Underneath the little seat cushions were pieces of food. Not just like a chip or something: there were actual remnants of someone's leftovers on the ground- like pushed under the cushions. It was capital GROSS, and 2) our party's order did not come together! I had to watch the others eat their yummy looking food while I waited for a simple panini order to come out- its not good to leave people hungry and wanting, Zanzibar! Other than those two miffs, the food was actually really delicious. Nothing felt too oily, and the flavors were all pretty balanced. The only reason why I probably would seldom visit is that compared to the other options at PC, Zanzibar is a bit more on the pricy side (hence the $$ rating- which is hard for me since I am totally a cheapskate). Being at a college campus, I'd rather go elsewhere for lunch. Their service is not the quickest, so I'd only order here if I had at least an hour and a half for lunch. I'm not a big fan of their chips. They're not as crisp as I'm used to. However, their shoestring fries that they have during happy hour totally make up for that. I dunno what it is, but I seem to be attracted to Parmesan and truffle fries wherever I go. I think that Cafe Opera Patisserie truffle fries are better, but this place is more convenient to get to since it is on campus. Chicken Pesto Sandwich - good, but I still like Crouton's version better. Pastrami Reuben - My first time trying a reuben anywhere so I can't say whether they make the best reuben in town or anything, but from this experience, I think that I will stick to my chicken pesto. This has to be the best food on the UCSD campus (sadly). I have never been dissatisfied with their assortment of sandwiches, burgers, and soups. The workers here always tend to be all smiles and are usually really helpful. When I go here I usually get the chicken pesto warm sandwich or the turkey burger (both are so amazing). These meals usually come with a side of chips or cole slaw, but I just ask if they can split it half and half so I can get the best of two worlds. The cole slaw is really light (NO MAYO!!) and has like a sesame taste to it and the chips are so fresh and delicious (but sometimes really oily). I have also tried the tilapia sandwich and the quesadilla which was not that bad but I would probably not order again. The quesadilla was just too expensive for a it's size (I think it might be around 8.50$?). The soups there have always been great and I wouldn't mind trying those again. I went to the Zanzibar cafe for an after-work happy hour and was sorely disappointed. The beer selection and prices were good, but the wine selection was poor. The menu looked good on paper, but the portion sizes were ridiculously small when they finally made it to our table. There is no wait staff here, so you order at the bar and your food is eventually brought to you. We paid $7 for a cheese plate that contained three tiny dots of cheese, a teaspoon of jam, and 12 slivers of mini-baguette. The Med plate was tasty but also very, very small in terms of portion size. The $2 chips are really good and are probably the only fairly priced food item on the menu. The bar staff were very nice but were completely without a clue as to how to take orders, serve drinks, or handle more than one customer at a time. I saw several people come and go without ordering while the bartenders dawdled around breaking glassware. This was at 4:00 on a Wednesday and the place was half empty. I can only imagine what it is like during a packed show. The students selling Korean BBQ on Library Walk are considerably more organized, efficient, and professional than these folks. The hard reflective surfaces made the atmosphere loud and noisy even with the place half empty. I can only assume that the acoustics are similar to that of a dumpster. The IKEA chairs and sofas were cold and uncomfortable. The real bummer occurred when we paid for a round of drinks and food at 6:29 and then were promptly told by a manager that we had to leave at 6:30 so the band could do a sound check. We told him we would finish our drinks and leave, but he kept demanding that we leave. We asked the bartender why they didn't tell us they were closing at 6:30 when we ordered and they seemed to be unaware that this was a problem. read more

When you finally live off campus (or even when you live on), it's a given you'd have to try some on campus food that you have to pay for. Zanzibar is one of those restaurant/bars on campus that everyone should try at least once. I've been there multiple times now. My usual is the Vegetarian Chili, it comes with corn bread and the chili is perfect! Lots of vegetables and a big scoop of sour cream and cheese, the corn bread is delicious and baked to just the right consistency! I've also tried their Reuben Panini. I personally didn't enjoy it, but the cheese Panini my friend had that I took a bite of was pretty delicious! I didn't enjoy the mocha I got there, but that's probably because I like my coffee extra sweet! The Zanzibar vibe is great, but probably because it turns into the Loft at night, a great little hipster/artsy joint with bands playing and so on. The service is super nice and fast, and just being in there makes you feel like a professional, like you're living in the real world but without the pressure. For something on campus, I definitely love it. Price is a little high to be honest, but the portions are huge! Get what you pay for. read more

This place is pretty fancy looking for being located on a campus. The loft is a chill place to hang around between classes. I've eaten here twice and its alright. The first time I got the Zanzibar House salad. It's got... artichoke, avocado, sprouts, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, with their house balsamic vinaigrette. It was pretty good. Price was about ~ $7. Today, I decided to try the Vegetarian panini (peppers, cheese, mushroom) with a choice of fries or cole slaw. I was really disappointed. Not only did it take more than 15 minutes to get my order, but my panini was soggy from the oil. It fell apart on me and halfway through, I just gave up because at this point I was eating soggy bread with oil dripping over my fingers. No bueno. The only thing really going for this place is the decor for the Loft. Other than that, Zanzibar is a fancy-looking, high-end cafe. Perhaps I'll give it another try someday. I'll admit it was a smart move to expand the Loft into a cafe, since they used to throw dry concerts years back. It was only sensible to add the liquor's license. $7 for a wine sampler during happy hour seemed like a generous menu item at first. Then when the 3 half full short glasses arrived, I was reminded again that I was at a business at UCSD which means they are always stingy with their portions and charge you up the butt. After being served some cheap wine, I came to conclusion that Zanzibar is wack. The waiter came by to notify us that they were going to close the place at 7:00 pm to set up for soundcheck for one of the performances later on that night. It's not a good idea to drive out your customers in the peak of happy hour when they just momentarily received their drinks and just want to unwind after a day of work or class. By the way, we ordered the simplest appetizer--edamame. Total approximate time to finally acquire the tiny dish= 30 minutes. After always hearing random people talk about Zanzibar Cafe on campus, I had lunch here with my old roommate. The food was decent. I had a turkey panini which was pretty good except that it was super salty. It also came with a side of fresh kettle chips. My roommates sandwich came with a side of cabbage salad which I noticed she just picked at - probably not the best. Overall it was a pleasant place to have lunch and catch up. It really made me forget that we were on campus. The atmosphere is nice and the staff was very friendly. I would definitely give them another chance to wow me, just have to choose something else to order - maybe their breakfast, which seemed pretty enticing on their menu. read more

SWEET POTATO FRIES - WHERE ARE THEY??? This brought me here, over and over, and then I made additional purchases... Now I'm so disappointed... They've been better about the music, and have happy hour food specials... Many faculty, staff, and grad students agree that sweet potato fries are/WERE a draw... Hopefully they'll accept feedback and bring them back. Nice for lunch - or it would be, except the music is unnerving and petty crappy. Volume is too high, and blasting from every speaker, every day. Music is cool, but so is being able to talk to the people you came with, and to think...makes me wanna bring my lunch, then go off campus after for drinks ... Too bad. If they mellowed out the bass and rotated the menu some it could be perfect (almost). read more
