It was understandably very busy this morning as I waited for my coffees (for me and family). There were several on the counter between me and my coffees. I needed a cup holder tray to get them back to my hotel. Unfortunately, the cup holder tray was flimsier than I'm used to and I had to lift it over the other cups on the counter. One of my cups fell out. It spilled all over the barista's work area. I felt awful and apologized immediately. The barista was understandably and visibly annoyed. I apologized again, but she would not acknowledge my apology. She was obviously pissed off and I felt like a child, in trouble for the spill. Her coworker tried to help clean it, but she did not accept help and was busy cleaning it so the coworker proceeded to remake my drink. I get that they are super busy and spilling my drink made things harder and inconvenient for them. I also think as a human, and as someone who works in customer service, you should acknowledge someone who apologizes for something they didn't mean to do. Philz coffee is usually a treat for me, but my experience today didn't feel like a treat. I just felt bad. Probably won't go out of my way to go back. I hope management will read this and rethink training their employees.

There's almost always a good mix of people working inside or out on the patio, giving the space a productive but comfortable energy without feeling overcrowded. The staff is consistently friendly, welcoming, and efficient, and the drinks are reasonably priced for the quality you receive. My go-to is the Iced Vanilla Latte, which is always smooth, well-balanced, and never overly sweet. I've also tried several other drinks over the years, and everything has been consistently well-crafted. So if you're looking for a coffee shop with quality drinks, a great atmosphere, and a place where you can actually settle in and get some work done, this is the café for you!

Our waiter was amazing, knowledgeable, and very attentive. The restaurant is very cute on the outside as well as the inside! Even though we didn't try their pastries they looked amazing! The area is right by the La Joya beach so it was a bit busy and we couldn't find parking in the parking lot they had but luckily there was plenty of parking not too far away. Sugar and Scribe has a very inviting decor and atmosphere. They have a very colorful patio and super cute interior as well. It had a very spring/summery vibe with all the beautiful flower decorations. When we arrived we were lucky that there was no wait, and we got seated right away. Our server was sweet and attentive and came out order right away. I decided to get the fried hot honey chicken and biscuits and my boyfriend got the fried chicken and waffles. Unfortunately, my fried chicken and biscuits were way too salty and I struggled to taste any hot honey. It just tasted like watered down tobasco sauce, which was disappointing! My boyfriend said he loved his fried chicken and waffles. He also thought my chicken wasn't too salty, but I felt it was for me personally. So I guess it might be a preference thing. Overall, we had a good experience there. I would give them another shot and maybe try something else next time!

We came from out of town and saw a Starbucks near by but then saw this place. "Encanto Cafe" and thought to myself "I'd give an independent place a try' - bad idea. Although the place looked great. Nice atmosphere great scenery and people were already there enjoying the balcony seating. (By the way, there are stairs to climb in order to get in) Once I got to the cashier to place my order there was a house fly hovering around. As if the fly was a secret shopper listening to my order. They had their windows open so I can understand it how it got in. This doesn't necessarily mean this place is bad, but of course it was bothersome. The lady taking our order was a bit stand off-ish when I asked a few questions. As if once I asked, she knew we were from out of town and sort of kept it short. I got the vibe she likes to deal with her regulars or people who know what they want. As this was an entirely new place for us, I wanted to ask about their popular drinks or if there were any seasonal drinks or special. But all I got was mainly "there's a menu if you want to take a look" They do offer donuts and pastries but as the fly was hovering about (which the cashier ignored as if she pretended it wasn't almost hitting our faces) I was turned off by eating. The drinks we ordered were simple. Matcha and a cold brew. But they tasted plain. The coffee was similar to instant coffee, nescafe tasting (not that it was but it tasted like it) the matcha was "meh" . Oh and NO BATHROOM "did you try across the street?" is what you get from them if you ask. Overall, with poor service, poor tasting drinks and the bothersome fly, I didn't enjoy my time there. I regretted not going to the starbucks. Maybe for locals its a nice place to sit and chat but for me, I wont ever return if i'm in the area. My girl agreed.

And it's delicious!!! Allie was our host and was able to find a great place to eat. All the tables are great with even an outside covered patio available. Jade our waitress was very friendly and nice. She was very patient and professional and listened to us in a kind way. With young ones with us, it is challenging. However, Jade ensured that we enjoyed our meal at the Shorehouse Kitchen. At brunch, my go to dish is the French toast that will tell me the quality and care from the kitchen. I was blown away at how delicious the French Toast was. The name is the "CARAMELIZED TAHITIAN VANILLA BEAN FRENCH TOAST with Fresh Blueberries or Bananas and Chantilly Cream, or a Grilled Pineapple". Jade gave away the secret ingredient to me and I was impressed. An applied Maillard reaction with brown sugar brought the French Toast a new level of yumminess. The Chantilly Cream took it over the top, not to sweet and very creamy. Yum!!! Also tried the "RASPBERRY TRUFFLE MOCHA St. George Vanilla Bean Vodka. Raspberry Liqueur, Callebaut Belgian Chocolate, Espresso, Steamed Milk, Chantilly Cream" . AMAZING!!! The Shorehouse Kitchen is a gem with fantastic food and service. Definitely a return visit call for the family!!!

I ordered a few drinks for my friends and me to try since it was our first time here, and we were heading to the beach after. They hand-whisk their matcha for each drink, which I really appreciate because most matcha spots in San Diego pre-make theirs. I got the regular matcha latte. I assumed it would already be sweetened, but it wasn't, which wasn't a big deal for me since I prefer little to no sweetness. It was still really good: perfect consistency, and you can definitely taste the matcha. My cousin got the matcha cream top (similar to a matcha einspänner), and I loved their vanilla bean syrup(?) that was included in the drink. It had the perfect balance of sweetness and creaminess. My friends also tried the orange latte, and they were pleasantly surprised by the cream on top. The orange flavor was noticeable but still subtle, and the coffee itself was strong. The syrups balanced everything out nicely. Definitely would come back again!

Now on to the food which is the most important. Ordered The Cure with friend chicken, The Meso which was a grilled chicken burger, a latte and an orange juice...wait till you hear about this one. The Cure ($24) was basically a biscuit with gravy, tater tots and fried chicken. The fried chicken was overcooked - it looked too brown. It was chewy and difficult to chew and enjoy. I only ate half of the plate because even the biscuit was too dense to eat. The guy asked if I wanted a to-go box which I refused because there was no way I was goin to eat the rest. The Meso ($18) was just okay. It's literally just a grilled chicken burger - no sides included - you wan fries with that? That would be an additional $7. The latte ($6.50) I liked - simple. Nothing added - just milk and espresso shots. The orange juice...it wasn't on the menu, so no prices were seen. Well...turns out it was $12!!! Get real! No wonder this wasn't on the menu cause for sure no one would be ordering orange juice for $12 for 12.4oz. Now I don't mind paying for good food but the food here wasn't even good. These prices are getting ridiculous. When it comes to service...it wasn't good. I was looking for the waiter to come take our order. Ended up flagging someone else and then our waiter stopped by asking, "looks like someone took your order". When the food arrived we didn't get any condiments...again we waited for the waiter. Nowhere to be seen. I got up, went to their bar area and asked for hot sauce and ketchup. It's as if we were forgotten. The service was not what I expected. This was a $75 bill (with tax/tip) for 2 persons...we're talking $37.50 per person...for something so basic. Needless to say we won't be going back.
