It was a beautiful day and we had an out of town guest. He loves golf but didn't have time to golf. So we decided to take him to dinner at The Grill at Torrey Pines. The view was amazing. I chose it for our guest. I knew I'd find something on the menu as a vegan option. I had read they were accommodating so I didn't worry and knew it would be great. I saw a few items labeled vegetarian and I asked what recommendations the server had for vegan options. She told me what was easy to be vegan on the menu and she offered to check with the chef. She came back and gave me more options, which was nice. The dinner menu is different from the lunch menu. I think the lunch menu had a falafel burger and a quinoa vegetable dish. So, for dinner I decided to have a southwestern kale salad without cheese and sub the dressing. I also got a side of roasted veggies. It was a nice variety of veggies and everything was fresh and tasty. I shared the roasted veggies with my husband because it was enough to share. I was very satisfied with the salad. Was here for an event and came back again the next day. Went back to back like I had a tee time I couldn't cancel. Both times I ordered the burger and sweet potato fries and just kept flushing it. Burger was big, juicy, cooked right down the middle. No weird bounce, no bad lies, just clean contact every bite. Fries were crispy and dangerous. The kind you keep reaching for like you think you've got one more good shot in you. Portions are generous. This is not small ball. You are playing a full course here. Food was money. No need for a breakfast ball. Staff was awesome. Friendly, on point, and everything moved at a pace that would make any marshal proud. Outdoor seating is where this place really shines. You are posted up watching golfers warm up and it is pure comedy. One guy looks like he is ready for Sunday at Augusta, the next guy is fighting for his life just trying to make contact. Overdue review for The Grill at Torrey Pines, which is the restaurant located on the ground level across from the golf shop at The Lodge hotel resort in La Jolla. Have dined here multiple times for breakfast, brunch and dinner mostly out in the covered patio with the view of the spectacular golf course. Valet or self park is validated by the restaurant. Most of what I have ordered were good but if the dish was not satisfactory, the staff have always been very accommodating to make it better. Yesterday's visit was for brunch and wanted to select foods I ordinarily have during Hanukkah. From the brunch menu, we ordered the Reuben, Smoked salmon avocado toast, house made potato chips with the onion dip, onion rings, a slice of chocolate cake topped with vanilla bean ice cream. Special thanks to the manager Josh. Some of the memorable dishes I had were the regular featured selections: Cardiff crack Tri-Tip fire cooked from brick oven outside salad and sandwich, Drugstore hamburger, calamari and the pancakes topped w/granola and berries. Unfortunate main steak plate My plate was the Cobb salad with the grilled steak. I would give this a 10 out of 10 everything was amazing. I love the flavors and even the roasted corn. Unfortunately, their main entrée item was their house steak was much smaller than my salad, even though it was at least twice as much. Great atmosphere and service is wonderful but the chefs need a little more training. The food was tasty by my food was not hot. My husband's Reuben, on the other hand, was piping hot. I ordered their famous burger with fries and right away I grabbed that first fry and it was lukewarm. The staff were great and replaced them but then when I took a bite of the burger was also lukewarm. I didn't want to ask again so I just ate it. So heres my suggestion for anyone who cares..the kitchen needs to work on their timing of which items get plated first. I could see my meal sitting under the warming lights for a while. Also for the price of my burger, I think the better choice of fries should be a thicker cut...the really thin almost shoe string style were just ok...plus they do get cold really fast. All the fixins were nice. Large sandwich and I could eat half of it. I really like the option to get 50/50 on the sides. I got the onion rings and sweet potato fries. Bad service, wait was long for food. Lots of attitude from the hostess. Dirty floor on the patio with food all over the ground. Our dog didn't even want to sit down (he's a clean dog). Service was good. It was very noisy possibly because there was a glass pane that blocked flow. We had Ruben Sandwiches, they used a rhy bun instead of bread. We ended up just eating the meat, etc. The meat was dry. It was my birthday and they did supply a yummy brownie topped with vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce which was a nice surprise. I had a reservation at 9:30 and planned a great breakfast with my family. We got seated with no issues. But then disaster struck. 15 to 20 minutes goes by with no one greeting us or giving a heads up that they will be right with you. I had to go to front desk to ask if we had a server. But finally someone came and took our full order as we were ready and hungry. Our food came and lots of food was missing. Our bread/butter, eggs, and no syrup was given with the pancakes. And the pancakes sucked, all raw and not cooked. Service was all over the place. If you ask for one thing they totally forget about it or take another 15 minutes to get it for you. I came here for Christmas Day dinner and it was a mixed bag. I rounded up because I got married at The Lodge and will always have a soft spot for it. First off, this was the only restaurant I could find in San Diego that served a prime rib dinner for Christmas so that is why we ate here. I liked that they had the prime rib dinner for $95 but you could still order off the regular menu. My husband and I started with their classic chips and dip. I have had this many times, albeit not very recently and either it was an off night or they changed the dip recipe because it was not what I remembered. Usually the dip is creamy, rich and onion-y. This time it was very watery and lacking flavor. We were both pretty disappointed. I had the gin spritz which was very good and an overpriced but very delicious glass of Pinot noir with my meal. Now for the prime rib dinner. The starter creamy parsnip soup was odd. Who approved this? It was warm, and not an offensive taste, but it definitely didn't scream special Christmas Day soup. I know The Lodge can do great soups because we offered the most amazing rich mushroom soup at our wedding. In the parsnip soup there weee weird little crunch things and the soup was pureed and not smooth. The prosciutto crostini that came with it was quite good. For the main, the prime rib itself was definitely more medium the I would order (The Grill didn't even ask how we wanted it cooked) but the chicory smoked flavor was unique and there were some very taste fatty ends. I take major issue with the menu saying it came with mashed potatoes when in fact it fact with potatoes puree slop. I did like the truffle flavor. The creamed spinach was not a side but a very small decorative amount on top of the prime rib. It tasted great though, and given it was probably the cheapest thing to make, why didn't they give us an actual side of spinach?? The "side" of lobster macaroni and cheese was more like a scoop but it was done nicely. Finally we must talk about the "dessert." It is pretty bold to call a glorified hot chocolate a "dessert." Especially for a $95 courses Christmas meal. The marshmallow fluff was yummy but this was NOT a dessert!! Service was fine. I expected a bit more holly jolly vibes from the staff but that didn't happen. It felt very transactional, not personal, and not up to The Lodge's standard. The meal coursing also was fast paced and not timed out well. Overall, unless if you have loyalty to The Lodge and specifically want prime rib for a holiday meal, I cannot recommend this as a Christmas dining option. Our server was extremely patient with us as we hadn't seen our friend for over a year so we were busy catching up rather than looking at the menu. After the 4th time checking on us we ordered. Many of my friends, who don't play golf at all, come to eat here on the regular and always told me I should too. Thankfully, I finally did. The customer service was great, the patio was fun and had a really cool view of the putting green and golf course in the distance. That said, none of it would've mattered if the food wasn't good, but thankfully, that wasn't the case. It was great. My family goes to church not far from here and I could definitely see this becoming an after church spot for all of us. Excellent service, from when I walked up to the hostess stand they were extremely polite and friendly and seated me in "the best spot". The server was sweet and polite and professional as well. She made great suggestions and explained the menu well. The view and ambience is top tier for an outside setting. Warm and cozy with natural earthy tones. They smoke most of their meat in this stone fireplace outside. I had the berry salad with an add on of the "Cardiff Crack" which is a tri tip steak notorious in San Diego. Crack it was. I could not stop eating it!!!! Smoked taste but very faint smokeyness and so much savory flavor. Seasoned perfectly and I am not a big Smokey fan. However I Highly recommend this!
