We've dined at the Zeitgeist a couple of times and have left fairly pleased. The food is upscale in conception and execution, especially in Duluth. The menu features a healthy amount of vegetarian dishes, and the beer and wine selections are well chosen. Service has been good each time and the ambiance is enjoyable. So impressed with the food! :) delicious and beautifully plated. Everything that came with our entrees complimented each other so well! The service was a tad slow for the food but our server was the sweetest. We enjoyed the duck rice bowl and roasted Rosemary chicken. Duck rice bowl was great Asian fusion and the duck was cooked beautifully. Nice place. Waiter is a touch smarmy & glad-handing, which is never a good sign. Had to wait over 10 minutes for our drinks, and when he finally brought them mine was wrong. I'd rather be waited on by a gruff scrub who has their shit together, but life is imperfect. Onto the food... Arugula salad is underdressed. A pity, because the salad dressing was actually really good. Nothing worse than a dry salad to start off a meal, especially when it cost five bucks. Was forced to mooch a few of my date's tomatoes for lubricity. A disappointingly paltry wad of parmesan cheese sat underneath the underwhelming pile of arugula, which only served to absorb whatever juiciness may have existed prior to its addition. Good flavors, poor execution. So far the most interesting part of the meal was one of the staff members pants.  They look like they came straight out of a Brady Bunch episode. Onto the entree... My rosemary chicken was swimming in a salty brine (see photos) that looked like a liquid small pox outbreak. Good flavors, but the salinity killed it. I found myself wanting to dip the ingredients on my plate in a glass of water so I could find out what they actually tasted like - except for the broccolini, which was half cold, tough, and fibrous. In all, a disappointing dish. Didn't even bother with desert. I wasted enough money on the salty madness that killed my tastebuds. In all, a great location spoiled by inferior food. What a hidden gem! The food was so much better than we expected! I had the scallops. I am a very picky scallops eater, I ONLY liked Kincaids scallops but they prepare them differently and wrecked a good thing. Well, Zeitgeist saved the day with perfect scallops served with Risoto and asparagus. The man had the trout which was my second menu choice and it was equally delicious. Cooked perfect and paired with wild rice. I also had two of the "Dr. Feel-good" cocktails. Perfectly made and I felt really really good after two! We followed dinner by catching a movie at the Zinema downstairs. Such a perfect and hassle free night night. We will be back! I can't wait! read more

Good drinks, food, music, and service. We ordered the duck pot pie and the smoked salmon arugula salad. For drinks we had the Airmail, Dan Stocke, and Buffalo Soldier. All were pretty smooth. The Buffalo Soldier is unique with coffee and a spiciness to it. Will definitely return when in the area. read more

I consider myself an aquavit connoisseur and I sampled a wonderful dill aquavit but was hit with a stiff bill on it. They were New Zealand green lipped mussels prepared fantastically with a nice coconut curry broth. Very generous portion of house made bread to dredge the sauce. This defiantly wins the award for best cafe in Duluth. We came in today for lunch. The inside of this place was extremely spacey and the layout made the place feel like there was so much room. I am a big fan of the brick walls and high ceilings. There was a lot of local art on the walls and some was for sale too. I'm not sure if it is a part of it but there is a small movie theater down stairs. We went to watch a movie there and we were the only ones in the theater and the place had a small intimate feel. It was a great place to bring a date. We will be back to see a movie! The food tasted super fresh and was delicious. We had a sandwich and some crus to share because we were not to hungry. I wished I would have orders more because by the end of the meal, we were craving a little more and I actually ended up leaving a little hungry. Our server/hostess was also very accommodating and sweet with and knew A lot about the menu and everything in the dishes served. read more

OK, so here it goes. I should start by saying that I am a bit spoiled when it comes to restaurants and cafes, because I travel all over North America as a part of my job and I've had the chance to eat at some of the finest places in the country. I shouldn't have that high of an expectation of an "Arts Cafe" in Duluth, MN, but given the way they come across, they really need to deliver quality. First of all, I'd like to give credit where credit is due. The ownership really put a lot of effort, time, and money into trying to bring a little more culture to a historically industrial town. The renovations and decorations used to create this trendy urbanite-like cafe was really well done. Straight lines, nice lighting fixtures, very creative use of old movie posters that have been blown up cover the huge wall that appears when you first walk in. Just, overall, a great atmosphere. As far as the concept is concerned, I also think it's a great idea. Combining Sundance type films with trendy food and drink in this town. It's a brave and brilliant idea. The thing that got us the most was the poor service we received on a Tuesday afternoon at 2:00pm...after the lunch "rush". There was literally one other person there when we arrived. I'm not sure if this kid was the exception to the rule...but after watching the manager on duty and interacting with the guy that runs the theater downstairs I am thinking this is their culture. The kid serving us was the bartender, waiter, and host all at the same time...which is fine because there were 3 people in there. I've never quite felt like the restaurant was doing me a favor by allowing me to eat there...but that's the feel I got from the staff there and I'm quite intuitive. The food was actually quite good. We had the bacon wrapped dates for an appetizer and an ahi tuna wrap with wasabi cream cheese and it was very tasty...my girlfriends rice bowl was lacking.....well.....rice. It was one scoop of rice and a bunch of brussel sprouts, but it was still tasty. Their drink selection was also very good. I am just very disappointed that I felt like I walked into a restaurant in NYC or L.A. and I was in Duluth where "Minnesota Nice" is supposed to be in full effect. I hope that management reads this and makes some changes because Zeitgeist Arts Cafe has potential! Don't let it slip away because of a lack of service. That's something you can control! read more

Our service was great. Food was terrible. The menu looked fantastic, venue was awesome, and my wife and I were very excited. Unfortunately the garbage the kitchen sent out couldn't deliver on the "seasonal fresh" menu concept. My wife ordered the gnocchi. It was fresh made...at one point in the distant past. It tasted like it had been lost in the back of the freezer since last fall. The gnocchi was rock hard and couldn't be stuck with a fork. We registered our complaint with the waitress and I told her to tell the chef the food was an embarrassment to send out the kitchen. Any quality establishment would meet that with a no BS response face to face from the chef or manager. Instead, the poor waitress had to come back with an apology and excuses from the chef. That part was probably worse than the crappy food. Stay away and spend your money elsewhere. read more

Stopped into Zeitgeist Arts Cafe after a long day of researching in downtown Duluth and a great place to stop for snacks/drinks/entrees. Even though it was a Friday evening was seated quickly at the bar and had terrific service (not sure if normally two people working behind the bar but perhaps since it was a Friday evening). Large wine/cocktail/beer menu along with good selection of appetizers (had the smoked salmon which was great and much larger than expected). I have been wanting to eat here for awhile and finally got myself out of my own kitchen for a night out. The feel of this place is very nice. Our waitress was very polite and attentive. I ordered "The Shire" and my gf ordered "The living green rice bowl". The food came quickly and was very fresh and hot. Awesome flavor in both of our meals and a nice amount of food. We really savored each bite. We left feeling happy and light on our feet - 3 cheers for healthy meals! The front of the menu has some good info about the organizations they support and where their food comes from. Some of the food comes from "seeds for success" which is a program that has low income people gardening in plots all across the city. The food they grow is sold at farmers markets in Duluth and Zeitgeist buys it too. I look forward to coming back and trying the white bean burger. read more

This new addition to Superior street is fantastic. Absolutely delicious food, fun and friendly wait staff, and a very classy decor. The food is very reasonably priced (even for a college student) and the quality is superb. With the lounge downstairs, it would also be a great place to catch a drink before one of the shows in the adjacent Zinema2. I would highly recommend visiting this new and exciting addition to downtown Duluth. read more

I go to this restaurant a couple of times a week because I work nearby and am so woefully bored with all of the other local options. The menu is solid with some real standout dishes that I find myself craving, particularly the curry rice bowl, Nicoise salad and the mussels, but what's really awesome is the service. I've gone to this restaurant in the lousiest mood just to hole up with a glass of wine and a nice meal and the staff was that perfect balance of always around when I needed something/not bugging me when I didn't. I prefer eating downstairs but the lights upstairs are so cool it's worth taking a trip up if you're seated on the main level. They are super cool. Overall it's a really good use of space, and they totally have an elevator to get up the stairs when I bring my grandma here (which I will). I can't wait till it gets really cold so I can keep myself entertained for hours drinking cocktails and watching movies in the cinema next door without setting foot outside. Between the three of us we ordered two duck pot pies and a cheeseburger. The crust on the pies was pretty delicious, unfortunately the overly salty meat ruined the experience! It was basically inedible. We were trying to eat around what was supposed to be the main attraction. Our friend said that her burger was also too salty! She couldn't finish it. What's up with that? I could mention other so-so qualities of The Zeitgeist, but the poor quality of the food is the thing we will most remember. read more

Wow... Urban Bistro in Duluth! Basics: great service, great atmosphere and better food. This is my first experience "trusting" yelp while traveling. I found myself in Duluth for a single night. I decided to check out on my yelp app what was recommended nearby downtown. This little place had a few reviews, and all 4-5 stars. I checked it out for lunch on my way out of town. The place is great! I am a Michael Pollan fan "In Defense of Food" and this place prepares very simple foods, healthy and in a great environment. I would expect this level of quality in San Francisco or Portland, but not Duluth. Give the owners a lot of credit. I had the artichoke bake and it was so creamy and loaded with artichokes... not filled with spinach as a cheep substitute. I had the mushroom sandwich with fruit. the sandwich was perfect but what really caught my taste buds for a surprise was the quality of the fruit. Anybody traveling in the Mid West with real West Coast experience will tell you that fruit really degrades after shipping across this country. Another reason to live out west! I am not sure how they did it, but the pineapple spears where so fresh and ripe and the grapes were loaded with water and the just right amount of crispness. If I lived or worked in the area, I would make this a regular stop. Unfortunately for me, I was only in / out for the day. If you are in the area, make this a must stop. read more

Had a wonderful evening tonight here. I read the Yelp reviews and recommended this place for dinner tonight. My co-workers and I are visiting Duluth for training for the next 3 weeks. We were looking for a restaurant to try and we were not disappointed. Our server Maya, I believe that was her name made great recommendations for entrees and was super sweet! I had the Coconut Curry Bowl with Scallops. My Scallops were cooked perfectly and the curry was delicious. My co-workers enjoyed their dishes also!!! It's next to a movie complex and I would definitely recommend this place for someone on a first date or someone looking for a great meal with variety and affordable prices!!!! My wife and I were passing through Duluth on our way to the North Shore and someone recommended the Zeitgeist to us for dinner. We found the food VERY good with a interesting mix of Asian and new American dishes. The smoked gouda stuffed dates appetizer were particularly tasty. Wy wife had the curry rice bowl and enjoyed it, but I had the pressed fig prosciutto sandwich and it was REMARKABLY good. A great meal was had by all in our party: Caesar salad, Whitefish, Chicken sandwich, and Proscuitto & Fig Sandwich were our choices... and we all left happily full! I got the coconut curry with tofu ($12). First off, I need to say that I don't usually actually enjoy tofu; it is something I order solely for protein. The tofu here actually had some nice flavor to it! (Aside from just absorbing the flavor of the sauce.) My husband got the mushroom ravioli and let me try one....it was seerrrrr geerrrrrd! The ravioli itself was lovely and flavorful, and the sauce was creamy and delicious. I just want to note that when my husband's salad came out, it looked SO GOOD. Salads are normally not that tantalizing. It looked so fresh and full of delish veggies..... We all shared a cone of truffle fries with aioli sauce and ketchup, which was to die. I love me some truffle fries. Hooray for a good selection of vegetarian dishes!! I got a glass of Vouvray which I really enjoyed, and it was the cheapest wine at $6.50 (most were $7 or $7.50). On our trip to Duluth, we drove past this place on our way to another eatery. We were intrigued by the name and decided it would be a place to stop for one of our other meals. Boy I am glad we did. We decided to do a late lunch here on the 3rd day of our trip. P had the curry bowl .... I tasted and it was awesome. They cooked the tofu perfectly. I had the prime rib sandwich. Although it was a little more cooked then I like it wasn't dry and it was flavorful. The fries or pomme frittes were very tasty (warning to peanut allergies they are cooked in peanut oil). Our server was in training (his 4th day on the job) but he was very good. I loved the decor of the place. It felt more like a Minneapolis NY restaurant then in the middle of Duluth. Hope it is around when we visit again. read more

Rice was a little crunchy in the coconut bowl and the banana creme pie was not so much a pie as the brown sugar cubes were quite hard and difficult to eat, and the bananas were not cooked. Overall, I loved the ambiance and the concept but I didn't have anything revolutionary. Would probably try it again but would look around for other spots as well. read more

One of my favorite places to eat in Duluth. Food and service has always been great here. As a frequent traveler, I like to try the local establishments wherever I go and this one is definitely a good find, especially in a town the size of Duluth, MN. The New Zealand Mussels in coconut curry are tasty as an appetizer and the sweet and heirloom potato gnocchi is something deliciously different to try (although the cheese sauce wasn't prepared as well as it could have been one time). The roasted chicken is also a nice way to go. The cocktail menu is fun and the bartenders are quite knowledgeable and handy with the good variety of spirits behind the bar. This used to be such an amazing restaurant (in 2011). The past 3 times we have been there have been really bad experiences. My husband ordered the fish sandwich. When it arrived, one side of the open bun had lettuce, tomato and onion and the other side was nicely toasted - but empty! Somehow, both the chef and the waitress failed to notice that the fish was missing from the fish sandwich. The waitress was hardly apologetic but did retrieve the fish. I really hope that waitress is no longer there. read more
