Good vibe and great service, for sure. The food and drink menu looked good so thought it would be a great stop for lunch and drinks. We started out with a Martini for my wife and a Coconut Mojito for myself, only because I don't see them on the menu in the Midwest that much and haven't had one since our last vacation in Puerto Rico. The Martini was decent, but the wife wasn't feelin it so she changed to a Cosmo, which was decent as well - more for me! The mojito was good as well, but as you can see in the pic, could have used a little more coconut cream.. Started with the stuffed tater tots, which were ok, but made me wish I got the Ahi tuna crisps.. She ordered the Hellapeno burger medium rare, which was medium and again... was ok. I ordered the Short Rib burger which is supposed to be rib meat, brisket, and burger - also at medium rare. Mine was cooked perfect, but had zero rib/brisket flavor and was quite thin for that kind of burger. Pretty disappointing considering the description. Tavern on the hill is a nice spot to stop with comfortable seating and nice ambiance, good service, a wide ranging menu, and good food. Note: I would give this 3.5 stars if that were possible. I think this place is right in between 3 and 4. Food: I got the salmon salad and fries. The fries were very good and the salad was alright. The fish was quite dry and overcooked. Overall, it was fine but definitely not the nearly "perfectly cooked". Ambiance: this is a fun place for a group. It's upscale, well decorated, and not too loud (though also not awkwardly quiet). Stopped by Tavern on the Hill during a road trip back home to the cities from up North. We chose this place because they were able to accommodate a large party of 10 on a rather short notice which was great. When we got there, we saw a huge restaurant/bar sort of style place that seems like one step elevated from a Buffalo Wild Wings like chain with a more modern menu. They offer a big variety of pizzas, rice bowls, salads, burgers, etc. - just a big American menu. I decided to go with the Burrata Insalata Pizza after seeing a picture for it in the lobby waiting. First complaint is that the picture featured cherry tomatoes which were non-existent in my pizza. Despite this, the pizza was good - crispy crust and big piece of burrata. A lot of my friends ordered other more expensive items and were disappointed in "small portion sizes" according to them. The servers were friendly and helpful. Overall, a good stop! read more

This place is meh. Have been here many times and I recall it being better than it was today. The service was a bit slow. Sever not overly attentive to filled drinks. Good potions seemed smaller. Food was ok. Mine wasn't hot. Steak on it was ok. Other people at the table said it was "fine" but weren't excited by anything they had. A pretty good option if you find yourself in Duluth. While they don't have a ton of competition around town, this place is decent and has a wide variety of items to choose from so if you go with a large group, everyone will be able to find something they like. I have to say, this place was excellent - I've been to Duluth several times, and I was so excited to try some place new. As we were walking out of Glensheen, another group recommended this place. Pulling in to the lot, could hear a UMD game across the street. Not only did they have a wide array of beers and cocktails, they also sported some awesome non-alcoholic drinks that were quite fancy as well. We tried the fried avocado appetizer, and the dipping sauce was delish! I absolutely loved the Steak Cheezy (their spelling, not mine) Ciabatta, and my bestie had the Sassy Red Pepper Pesto Bowl. She let me try hers, and it was so tasty! And honestly, they couldn't go wrong with melted cheese, steak, and nice thick cut fries. Came here after finishing up a ski trip. Got the breakfast skillet. Was definitely worth it. It had a little too much salt but not too much where it was overpowering. The flavors mixed well together. Would get again. Was a chill place to get together and have a couple drinks. The wait staff was really nice and was able to squeeze in our meal a few minutes before lunch was started. We got delivery and were both starving looking forward to some dinner. Unfortunately our pizza was pretty sad looking and very much lacking food on it. Barely any meat on there, and you can see from the photo that there wasn't even close to enough cheese to call it a pizza. Seems like the pizza was carelessly put together and with how expensive food and everything is today, I expect to get a quality pizza with cheese covering it all, and more meat too. Not to mention, I got the notorious pig sandwich and it was all bread, barely any pork. A sandwich should have more meat than bread ratio. We were looking for a place to go for a late lunch. All the places by Canal Park had long waits. Glad we found Tavern on the Hill. The building itself is large and their patio is good size too. The tables were spread out well for social distancing. The menu has something for everyone. Out of the seven meals we ordered this afternoon, not a single one had edible fries. I initially thought we all just got sweet potato fries on accident, but they were just incredibly burnt regular fries. My son's $7 turkey dog was so shriveled that it was spongy in weight and texture. I asked for the Thai sauce on the side of my Thai Chicken Tender Melt, but didn't receive any at all, kind of defeating the purpose of ordering that particular sandwich. I can't help but wonder if they would have tried passing that off to patrons who were dining in as opposed to picking up. I had ordered a bacon cheeseburger (addition of pickles) and had picked to have it pink inside. The burger was hard as a puck- well done and had no bacon or pickles on it. And I got the "steak" salad which was delicious. Grapefruit mojito to drink which was very good. The lemon cake for dessert was great, but light on lemon flavor (I like my lemon desserts sour.) This restaurant is not far from our home. We try to like it but are consistently disappointed with the service. We walked in, sat at the mostly empty bar, one bartender. She made drinks for the servers until finally I had to get her attention. She came and put the drink coaster in the puddle of water in front of us. I had to ask her to wipe it up. I went to the Tavern with some friends last week and had a great time. The food was great the vegan steak bites are mid but the server named Nick who spent time in California was really personable and served us fantastic drinks. We had a great dinner at Tavern on the Hill tonight. I believe our server was Jackson (something like that?) and he was very attentive and prompt. He suggested The Tavern Marg and it was PHENOMENAL! I had a fussy little one and he was great with boxing up my food and grabbing my tab so I could hurry on home and not let my kiddo disrupt others. My steak salad was absolutely delicious even though I didn't eat it for another hour. This will be on our visit again list everytime we visit my sister in law! First timer. First impression was a little loud because of how busy it was.... okay I started skeptical. Food was great! Drinks poured well, and service was great. Only complaint. If you call your nachos "Srinacho" they better have some sriracha kick which these didn't. They were almost too much on the sweet bbq side. Other than that and a request for a side of sriracha we were really impressed. My wife thought her Side of Brussel sprouts and butternut squash pasta was the best she's ever had. The menu had a great variety of choices. Next time we're in Duluth we'll make a point of stopping back. This is just a update from my original review. I took another trip to Duluth to visit my daughter Next-door at Bluestone and gave this place a go. Here's my 2 scents - I love the modern look and the outlets in our booth for usb charge, that's awesome! Our server Sam was on point and we never had a empty glass on the table. We never did get checked on by management like we did at their sister locations. Bathroom was very clean and staff was very friendly. Now the food...... We had started our evening with an App. Sweet Thia Chili wings and that sauce was perfect sweet/spicy and copious amounts of sauce on them. My wife had a pizza called the Blue Stone and she thought it was "very good" she followed that up with a lavender lemonade that was also "fabulous". I went with a (make your own pizza) I did Alfredo sauce, chicken, feta, blue cheese and a BBQ sauce drizzle. This people was an intense punch you in you mouth of amazing flavors and messed with your taste buds in a great way. I would highly advise giving the pizza a shot. Their pizza is a cross breed between Napoli / thin crust / traditional. It was good though. Also, just a FYI , they have the gluten free option crust if desired. My only hang up....... I come from the Midwest where beer cheese soup reigns supreme and this beer cheese soup was anything but. I would consider that a cheese dip with waaaaaay too much corn starch and maaaaaaybe ok for dipping bread into. It confused me and our table. It wasn't a soup or a dipping sauce. If they could perfect a decent beer cheese soup, this place would have no flaws! I love Tavern on the Hill. The staff are always amazing! Nick is by far my favorite waiter of all time. He always is on top of everything and always kind. One thing my group noticed while in tonight was the ambience has changed noticeably. We come nearly every week for the food, but also the atmosphere. Tonight there was a different type of Playlist playing. I knew immediately something had changed. My group misses the old Playlist. It always made us happy. We had an OK dinner at Tavern on the Hill, but I honestly think that maybe that had to do with what we ordered. Overall I liked the restaurant itself. It's a nice relaxed restaurant but still had a kind of more upscale feel than a lot of restaurants in the area without being too pretentious. For dinner, I kind of just did a combo of appetizers. I ordered the lobster bisque, which was good and surprised me when it arrived at the table with some bits of real lobster on the top. A nice touch, along with the nice toasty piece of bread that came with it. The soup itself tasted very good. It was a bit thick in consistency but I suspect that may have been because it was near the end of the night. We also got the coconut shrimp which were totally good coconut shrimp. Nothing exceptional but absolutely tasty with a nice dipping sauce. And then we got the fried avocados, which were probably the biggest disappointment of the night. The avocados were not creamy and the breading was just kind of meh. We'll be back. We'll just maybe order differently. read more

Whether we sit in one of the private booths, at the big bar, or at a table under the glass-covered patio, we find that we're always able to relax while dining at Tavern on the Hill. We've eaten breakfast, lunch, and dinner here at different times of the day and week and have always enjoyed the food.
