I found Su on Groupon in January. As with most of the hair places I have gone to I expected it to be a one off. Get my deal and move on. I wanted a short precision cut. I showed Su photos of my hair ideas. She listened, reiterating what she heard and then got to work. The shampoo, which is always my favorite, is something she did TWICE! Wow! Twice the love! Then the cut, I don't think anyone has ever taken the time to cut my hair with such precision and dedication. You can tell she loves what she does! It was FREAKING PERFECT! Not only did I LOVE IT, EVERYONE of my friends LOVED IT! It was exactly what I wanted and needless to say, Su has become the ONLY hairstylist I allow to touch my hair! (My hair is very fine.) Amazing haircut. I came to Jason a while back because I was in So-Cal visiting my friend and she recommended him. The salon itself is clean and bright and sleek in decor. Although I have moved 50 miles away from South Pasadena 3 years ago, I still visit her every other week as I find no one who can beat her meticulousness and patience in applying henna treatment. Went in to get highlights done by Su! As always, she was extremely patient and meticulous when bleaching and coloring my hair! I had told her that my hair was virgin hair, but after bleaching we realized I still had some dyed parts, which needed more time to lift the color. She was really flexible and spent more time with me to ensure the desired color was reached before taking out the bleach for coloring. I let Su choose the color tone for me and am absolutely in love with how it turned out!! Kowning this salon stylists many years ago ,they did great work and always leading the hair fashion

First off, I have never written a negative Yelp before, but I really feel my experience at this place really needs to be shared so others are forewarned! My regular stylist was on extended vacation and my pixie cut needed a trim. Just regular maintenance - no biggie. Bought the Groupon for Su thinking it was a way to get what I needed without spending the big bucks and maybe find a backup place for when my usual stylist is unavailable. Su was responsive and clear about her scheduling and the place looked great - clean, well lit, etc., But this woman gave me the worst cut of my life. She was SO slow (it took 1 hr 40 min) for what should have been a quick trim on my short pixie! She didn't even seem to have the proper tools and insisted on thinning the thick layers of my hair with clippers (no thinning shears?!) The result is now uneven, choppy layers (it looks like I have terrible split ends) and she did no shaping to the base of my neck. Su also mentioned several times during this exhaustingly long nightmare that 90% of men prefer women with long hair. WTF?! No thanks. Keep your opinions to yourself, please. It wasn't until I got home that I realized how bad the cut really was (I know have to make an appointment elsewhere to fix Su's awful handiwork) and on top of it all, I was really irritated by her unwarranted, ignorant and hurtful comments. Please don't fall for the Groupon deal like I did with Su. I am usually so forgiving and give people the benefit of the doubt in most situations, so it pains me to leave this review but I really was so bummed about my whole experience at Zen 2000. Oh I love this place. Su is the only one accepting the Groupon deal. She is fun to talk to and would really give you advice on what kind of hair style should fit you. The place is really nice and clean. Can't wait for my next appointment for the Herbal color treatment. Will post review after my appointment. But I think found my hair stylist from now on. I can attest that I have never cheated on my hair dresser, and I'm damn proud of it. Unlike other girls who cheat and go salon hopping, I know what I want, and I know who and where to get it from. I've been a loyal customer at Zen 2002 since 2005. Ya-Ling, my stylist, is the coolest, friendliest, knowledgeable stylist there is. She is so talented that I have referred not just one friend, but even an entire family to her. The family consists of my cousin, her husband, and their two baby girls. My cousin is next in line after me as far as loyalty goes. We are always the last customers to come in and always stay the latest catching up with Ya-Ling and getting our hair done together. Ya-Ling is the first and only person who I've ever let chop my hair off. I mean, literally, chop it off. In 2005, I was feeling daring for the first time and wanted to go for Nicole Richie's short 'do. Ya-Ling was my go-to-person, and she did not dissapoint! I always had long straight hair all my life, so that was a drastic change for me after 20+ years. I warned her that I was probably going to cry my eyes out too. Surprisingly, I sucked it up and kept my cool while she chopped and chopped away. Years passed and my hair got longer and longer, but this time it grew not just to my usual elbows, but right above my butt. My hair grows really fast, so I've been wanting to donate my hair. A minimum of 10 inches is required to donate. Finally, last week I let Ya-Ling chop off 13 inches of my hair!!! I'm donating my ponytail to Locks of Love so a little girl with cancer can wear my long, healthy, luscious locks :) Damn, I miss my hair. I miss the wind blowing in it =( but I know it's for a good cause and I love kids, so I'm glad to do anything to put a smile on those little girls faces. Plus, my bf and all my friends who've seen my short do really like it too. If you ever want a drastic cut or even just a basic trim, I highly recommend Ya-Ling at Zen 2002. It may depend on who you have as a hair stylist, but the one I have I love. She is so talented, friendly, and good at what she does. I just let her do whatever she wants and it always turns out nice. =) They changed their policy recently though. You have to book appointments directly with the individual hair stylists instead of calling into the receptionist and getting anybody to cut your hair. Its a bit on the pricey side though. read more

Everyone here was very professional and friendly. I got my hair permed with a loose body wave and a layered cut. Jason and Tina were very knowledgable and Tina gave me a nice scalp massage while washing my hair. I cannot say enough about the friendly atmosphere, but the true test is what your hair would look like after you wash and style it at home. I've been admittedly stingy when it comes to my hair lately and well...it showed! My hair was at its worst, bad cut, bad color, ridic texture. I booked an appt with Yaling. Initially I thought inward coming in for a cut and color. Her super sweet and amazing assistant,Sue, told me about a hybrid hair straightening treatment they offer. I didn't feel "upsold" or pressured at all. After speaking with Yaling I decided it was a "Go"! It's a combination of the Japanese hair straightening and the Brazilian blowout. Let me say this, 4 hours later I couldn't be happier. My hair is smooth, looks healthy and is cut in a way that will promote the growth I'm going for. A friend recommended Jason. I've been told I have beautiful hair - it's thick and shiny and healthy. I don't take any credit, as I barely wash or brush it and never style it. When I called to get a consult appointment, they said just call in the morning the day of and tell us what time you're coming, which I did. I don't live near here, but made the trek to Pasadena, did some shopping and stopped by mid-afternoon. There were 3 people in the salon when I walked in: Jason and his client, and another stylist. Then it turns surreal: I walk in, they look at me and no one says a word. I stand there, the other stylist motions for me to sit down, and I do. After 15 minutes, no one has said anything to me. I look at Jason and say: I'm your consult. He barely nods. I sit there. It's definitely Zen. I wait. And wait. And wait. I felt like an imposter at a dinner party. After 45 minutes, I got up slowly to leave, expecting someone will say something: Hello. An apology. An explanation. Something. But nothing. Well thanks to Jason and the Brazilian Blowout my life has changed forever.. I've been going to Jason for a while a now and he has always managed to take the mess that I give him and make me look like I didn't just get out of a wind tunnel. But I could never successfully recreate what he did (well to be honest, I still can't, but at least it doesn't look like I didn't even try anymore). The Brazilian Blowout has become the pinnacle of my hair experience with Jason and I am truly humbled and in awe of his many talents. I look at my hair everyday and I still don't recognize it. The texture has completely changed. My hair is soft, manageable, and most importantly, SMOOTH.. no more uncontrollable frizz and no more pony tails =) The best part? I can now roll out of bed 10 minutes before I'm late =) As for the salon itself, it is always clean, professional and very welcoming. Jason from this salon has extensive experiences with styling Asians and he knows how to give you good-looking and easy-to-care hair styles. Most importantly, he listens to customers. Additionally, I recommend trying their herbal hair color. It's herbal so it doesn't hurt your scalp and it stimulates your hair growth. The only safe and healthy hair coloring option. I can't explain how much I love my haircut with Jason. So it started an year ago. I've been trying to look for a good stylist around the San Gabriel Valley area (seriously, I don't want to drive to WLA for a haircut), then I read these amazing reviews on yelp about Jason and Zen 2002. And all these reviews mentioned that Zen 2002 is a high-end place, so price isn't cheap. Eventually I say to myself "I'm going on vacation, I'll throw down $$ to get a great haircut and look amazing in all my photos!" I came to Zen 2002 and met up with Jason--that totally changed my life. Before, I believe that a "decent" haircut is satisfying, I don't have to spend that much money on my hair, as long as I look acceptable. Then I walk out of Zen 2002, I told myself "No, I WILL HAVE to spend this much money to help my hair look amazing, because every morning I look in the mirror I feel good." The salon itself is very organized and clean, the overall environment was great. On top of an awesome hair artist, Jason is also a very wise, intelligent, scholarly person. He's very well caught up with current events and what's out there. Throughout my whole hour of haircut sessions, Jason never ran out of topics to talk about and all the conversation weren't just random gibberish. I knew I wanted natural looking loose waves. I had called in advance and asked Jason about pricing and how the perm process works at Zen 2002. He said that for a first time customer, he always prefers to do a consultation so that he understands what the customer wants. After meeting him for the consultation, I found him very personal and professional. He knew what I was looking for and was confident in creating the outcome I was hoping for. The next day, I had my appointment (which he fit into his already full schedule because I was leaving town the the next day). He wrapped my hair using small and medium rods and told me the reasoning behind doing that. I had a great conversation with him and learned of his passion for beauty and the art of hair design. I not only gained respect for him as a hair stylist, but I felt like I could trust him. All in all, my hair turned out great and I would recommend Jason to anyone who wants to try something new or is looking for a reliable and professional hair stylist! Extremely upset that I trusted the opinions of others on here and went to get a haircut at this place. Opted for the owner, because he's the most expensive, thinking it was gonna give me the best results and I went with a reference picture and a head full of thick hair all the down to my ass crack. Showed him the picture of EXACTLY what I wanted and told him the exact amount I'd be ok with with him cutting..less than 6 inches. He cuts my hair from the get-go all the way to my shoulders and sends me to the wash. I'm already praying that this guy knows what he's doing after the initial mess up of cutting half of whole hair length. The lady who washed my hair was nice enough, no complaints about her. Anyway, after the wash, I keep crying in my mind, worried, but still praying this guy knows what he's doing. When I just see length cutting after length cutting and none of the face framing I wanted, I mention again : please stop cutting the length, I don't want any shorter than this. This is already too short. He tells me he's gonna cut the face framing pieces I so badly wanted (a Bardot style haircut--which is TOTALLY ACHIEVABLE on a head of hair like mine) after the hair is dry. Tugs and tugs on my hair and on the knots he's created by blow-drying the way he did, then he goes to the face framing part. I show him the picture again. Beautiful face framing long Bardot bangs and some longer pieces. He's done. I'm left with a freaking weighed down stuck to my freaking face shapeless crappy flimsy pseudo whatever they are because they are not bangs they don't frame my face and I'm 120 dollars poorer for a job I'm EXTREMELY unhappy with. Bring a bottle of cognac for the Zen Master for best result...LOL Jason is the most creative and detailed stylist that I've ever work with. The downside is that you will get a longer session with him than others. Another unique quality with Jason... My hair is far more manageable and the style seems to last few weeks longer.
