I showed the owner a picture of what I wanted and she asked me what I liked about the stylez which I appreciate. I've been going to Joanne for the last 10 years. She always listens to what you want and will give you her honest opinion. If she doesn't think your desired cut will suit your face shape she'll let you know and work with you to find a nice middle ground. She's honest and realistic and will manage your expectations. I have extremely thick and black hair, and when I wanted to go from black hair to blonde she let me know that with my hair texture it would'nt happen in one session and that it takes time, effort, maintenance, and multiple sessions. I ended up not doing to look, but I was happy she told me what it would take to achieve the look i was going for. I trust Joanne to a point where I am willing to let her take the wheel and surprise me with a haircut! I do this when I want a fresh look and when I'm not quite sure what I want. I'm trying really hard to cut this place slack but I have to admit, I'll probably not be back. I'm sure Joann's a really nice person but she has got to get her schedule straight. Called in Friday because reviews on yelp were good and she said she was free. I scheduled for a 4:00 wash & cut because I had dinner plans at 6- 2 hours should be more than enough time. I got there at 4PM sharp and sat for 45 minutes before she had someone wash my hair. Apparently she's the only real stylist that does cutting and "technique" work? Sat with my hair in a towel for another 30 minutes (my patience was very good that day, thank God) and then she finally came over. She'd had 4 other people's hair going on at the same time, including at least one that came in after me. They all looked like repeat customers but still...I did have an appointment! She handed me some hair magazines and left me alone for another 15 minutes. An hour and half in, I finally got her alone to me and my hair. I told her I wanted side part and bangs that part to the side, a slight trim and some thinning and layering. She kept insisting that blunt bangs would look great with my eyes. I'm wearing a t-shirt and jeans mind you, so I point out that I'm not a big fan of very feminine or girly hair. She insists it will look great and starts cutting away. I wind up with very low blunt bangs right over my eyes. She gets called away to finish perming some lady's hair so she has her assistant give me yet another shampooing. Then the assistant curls my hair. I looked like a little girl's doll, just short of a pink frilly dress. I was not that happy, considering the assistant didn't do a very good job blowdrying my hair or curling it. She comes over at the end and tries to straighten the curls out a little which helps a bit. I missed my dinner reservation because I left at 6:15 from the salon, a good 2 hours and 15 minutes from my reservation time. My hair was not suited to me I think and I really wish she'd stuck with the general guidelines I'd given her. The cut wasn't terrible and I'm sure it would have suited some people- I have gotten compliments but I did think she didn't spend half as long as she could have. I had some uneven sides of the bangs I had to cut even myself. At $40+ tip, this was far from the best haircut experience I've had. Guess you just have to take a chance and learn from it...definintely do not come here on the weekend unless you have a couple hours free. She was nice, just terrible with the time management. read more

My friend who got her hair done here suggested Joann after I mentioned I needed to find a hairstylist in LA. I decided to go for it since my friend's hair looked good, reviews were decent and her cut and dye was only $90! The first time I walked into the place on a Saturday, Joann politely told me that they are pretty busy on weekends and without an appointment she wouldn't be able to fit me in. No worries, I took a card home and made an appointment for today. Today I got my hair dyed and it turned out okay... the bottom of my hair is darker than the top but I think this might be the nature of my hair somehow. ANYWAY, I ONLY got a dye (no cut) and she charged me $100. My hair is like 1.5 inches past shoulder length. I was a little shocked when she told me $100 because my friend whose hair is a couple inches longer than mine got a cut AND dye for only $90?! I felt a little ripped off... this probably happened because I am a newbie and it was my first time but still... a little steep and I was only 80% satisfied with my hair. Other than the price, Joann is really sweet and listens to what you want. She is good at making suggestions and giving you ideas when you are not exactly sure what you want. After my mom saw the gorgeous bob my friend received from Joanne, she decided to start going to Hair Tech 2000. Now, my mom is super picky. She rarely keeps going to the same hair stylist for more than 3 times, so when she stuck with Joann, I had to give her a try. Joanne is very honest, and will tell you what looks good with your face shape and what cut and color you can pull off. She really looks out for customers rather than just looking to make money. For instance, after telling her I would be going abroad for a few months, she suggested different hair colors that would keep better, and cuts that would last longer as well. Overall, Joanne offers good hair cuts with good value. I wouldn't go here for anything super advant-garde, but if you're looking for a good cut, and want to be safe, I would definitely recommend Joanne. read more

I mean sure I can go burn a hole in my wallet and go to one of those pricey places, but you gotta balance it out with something reasonable. I get my cut with Joann, who's one of the owners. Never really had a bad cut with this place. With some asian places you come out looking like you got a haircut in asia, but this place she understands what you tell her. I don't have anything against the really asian euro-fob funky semi mullet look, but that's not my style. If that looks is your style she could probably do it. I would recommend this place to anyone. I've been coming here for about 6 years now and I've never been unsatisfied with Joann. She speaks English, Taiwanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese. She's very nice and very helpful as I am always open for suggestions for my hair. She always gives me great suggestions and I always love how my hair comes out. One of the things I love is that when she dyes your hair, she makes her own hair dye specifically for you. She mixes everything all on her own based on how you want your hair to come out. She takes care of your like its her own hair. She's dyed my hair a bunch of times before and my hair never comes out dry and ugly. She uses the good stuff so that your hair doesn't get damaged. She also offers treatments to keep your hair looking shiny and healthy. One other thing is that you don't come out smelling like hair dye or ammonia. I will definitely suggest to call and make an appointment first specially in the evenings and weekends. She has many clients and she gets booked pretty fast. I saw Joann about a month ago for a maintenance trim and walked out completely satisfied! My previous stylist in San Diego has gotten so popular/busy (thanks to yelp...) that it was simply impossible to get an appointment anytime soon. Not to mention she started giving sloppy, 1/2 hr haircuts as a result of trying to see more clients in a day. Since I'll be moving to the San Gabriel area soon, I decided that I might as well find a new stylist. My appointment with Joann was on a Friday. Not realizing that the plaza is a popular lunch spot = no parking whatsoever, I ended up parking on the side street (2 hr. max I believe), and was a few minutes late to my appointment. Luckily, Joann was still with a client, so she had one of her assistants wash my hair while she finished up. I went in with an overgrown a-line bob, and explained to Joann that I'm in the process of growing my hair out but felt like I needed a trim. She was very nice and patient with me, taking the time to ask questions and presenting options to me as to how she could cut my hair (inside-out cut vs. layers?). She also asked me how I wanted my bangs and made sure we were on the same page by showing me examples from a japanese hair magazine. In about an hour or so, I ended up with exactly what I wanted - a classy yet stylish cut. I came here for prom hair styling because I got a free voucher from a school auction. I brought in a couple of pictures I liked, and the picture of my dress, and she honestly told me what she thought would look best. Her assistants did the curling, and she came by to put it up. It looked amazing. At first I thought it was too curly, but she said it'd uncurl a little bit, and it did, just in time for pictures. She also took the time to put flowers in my hair to make it pop more. I really liked that she did her best and didn't just brush me off even though I was getting it done for free. She also took a lot of time and put in a lot of detail for the other girls who were getting their prom hair done. If I had an event, I'd definitely come here again. So, in an effort to recession-proof my wallet, I started to search for a new place to cut my hair (I used to go to Vidal Sassoon in BH) and found this place on Yelp. It had three things going for it: 1) Close to home, 2) Cheap, and 3) Good reviews. I decided to give them a call and they were able to squeeze me in on the same day at 6:00pm. When I walked in, they immediately washed my hair and gave me Japanese hairstyle books to look through to pick a style. I found one for long hair, but my hair was only medium length, so the owner said she'd give me the cut, but style it for my length. When she finished, I looked amazing! I never had a hair cut look this good, not even when I was paying $100+ at Vidal Sassoon. I've been here twice and I likeee the result both times that I went. This place is always packed packed packed, so it's best to get appointment instead of coming in. I'm not sure if there's another owner there or not but both times I got Joanne and she's one multitasking person. I trust Joanne. I've never had anyone else ever understand my hair and what I want. I can fall asleep while she is cutting my hair and wake up to see everything is done - HAPPY EVERYTIME. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Sure, the place doesn't look like a Beverly Hills boutique salon, but she's got the same skill, if not better than any stylist in LA, to do the job. This place is definitely a cut above the usual strip mall Asian salon in that Joanne is very attentive, professional, and fluent in English. Having said that, I've had pretty average haircut outcomes both times (hence the 3 stars). It's definitely worth a try, but just didn't work out for me. (Fyi - my hair is coarse and thick, looks great flat ironed, but I usually end up running out the door with a ponytail.) read more
