Sometimes you end up being the customers you never meant to be. The Zig Zag is what it is: The place you stop for a bite between the mountain and Portland. It fulfills its duties properly with dependable food and enough history to make it interesting. We were between the mountain and Portland and ate. Because of a tiny, tiny, tiny (like, really, really small) and understandable misunderstanding between the waitress and my son, we had to correct his order. He felt horrible. Who doesn't hate a misunderstanding? So when she came back and asked how the food was we all said fine and, after a beat, he saw his chance: "Great!" he said. But it sounded like a sarcastic, "GREAT." As in, not great. As she walked away he said: "That didn't sound right, did it?" Which sent us all into hysterics and reinforced his unintentional sarcastic great. The she wished us a happy father's day and my wife told her I wasn't the father (if you saw my nose and my daughter's nose, there would be no discussion. You can only inherit a nose like that. But you wouldn't want to. We all have our crosses to bear.) Everything was fine even though everything seemed wrong. Then we clogged up the toilet. After closing. After they'd cleaned the toilet. Took some friends from Chicago up to Timberline and picked this place to eat based on other recommendations here. The ambiance and service was excellent. Food on the other hand...standard ..what I would call...chow...what you would eat when you are hungry, but nothing else...fish and chips was really greasy and overbreaded, salads were basic, pasta marginal. Chowder was ok, but there was absolutely nothing special about this place that would cause me to go back...might be willing to try the pizza...saw several delivered and they looked pretty good... read more

I mainly go here for the bar side which is hidden from the restaurant side. The bartenders are always friendly, and during NFL games there is a great big appetizer menu that has great prices. Lots of old time working class locals hang out so it's a fun place to meet up. I like the pizza, just be warned they cut it in square slices, so if you want regular cuts, let them know when ya order it. The only downfall is that they close at 10pm, so don't expect a late night out. read more

A staple on the mountain for as long as I can remember. A great place to stop on the way down from a day of skiing/boarding and warm up with great food in a cozy authentic log cabin. In my opinion, the pizza is the best here. Nice thick crust, cut into squares and lots of options to choose from. My favorite is the chicken garlic. Another favorite is their house green goddess dressing. Yummy, but be prepared to have garlic breath! The service is nothing special, but not bad. There is a bar in the back that mostly houses locals. We have been a few times, but twice have had obnoxious locals try to start things with my husband (who is the most mild mannered guy around). Not the Zig Zag's fault, but I would stick to the front of the restaurant. read more

Love "T" fast most attentive server I've had in years, and it was so refreshing. She's so sweet and I felt like I was back at home and my mom was the one taking care of me. I usually don't leave reviews because people tend to only have something to say when they're being a grouch or for their own selfish reasons but I wanted to make sure I wrote one for this place. We ate here after a long day of travel on our first night in town. We were incredibly disappointed. We were seated right away and the staff was very friendly, which was great. It was not overly busy and we waited an incredibly long time for our food to come out. We ordered the nachos as an appetizer, and it came out AFTER our main dishes. The ingredients on the nachos were clearly processed and pre-made including a nasty "cheese" sauce and large slices of what I would call deli chicken. My husband ordered the meatloaf dinner and said it wasn't too bad. My son ordered a gluten-free pizza and only ate one bite. His backup were the nachos but none of us liked them. I ordered a Cobb salad, and the greens clearly came from a bagged iceberg mix. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. read more

What a delightful place! We stumbled in by chance and were immediately charmed. The food, the hospitality, and the atmosphere are all great. We came back two more times during our week's stay on the mountain. My husband says the burgers are tops, I had and enjoyed the chicken Parmesan, grilled cheese, and special stroganoff. read more

I've been here a few times after camping/hiking at Trillium, and every time they've had great waitresses and good pizza!

I've only been a handful of times, but recently went on New Year's Eve. The food was average, but the service was awesome! They also have GF pizza, which is a great plus for me, as I have to be GF. Our food came quick despite the holiday rush & our drinks were good. The lounge is full of locals & the entire place has a dive bar vibe to it--in a good way! Not gourmet, but definitely good & casual with nice servers. Great for a low-key day. read more

We normally eat the pizza here but I wanted steak last weekend. It was the worst steak I have ever had. No flavor just out of the package flipped on grill no seasoning, frozen veggies just boiled and thrown on my plate no flavor. So very disappointment. the pizza is good and so is the rest of the menu. The staff is friendly and this place is a good hang. They have a lot of TVs for sports and other events. The corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day is good also. This is just a great place for hanging out with friends and socializing. They have live music in the summertime which is a lot of fun. I like the zigzag inn a lot. I prefer their wings, cheeseburgers, and the pizza is pretty dang tasty. Delicious cold beers on tap also. read more

I've been going to the zigzag inn for many years during the weekdays. I have always gotten fantastic service during those times. However, I went in with some friends during the evening and sat on the bar side. The bartender/server we had was unimpressive to say it nicely. She was very slow and inattentive and didn't even know what liquors or mixers they had in stock. When we had finished our drinks we had been waiting for about 20+ minutes for a refill and we had to go to the bar the ask for more, which took another 15+ minutes to get beers which was absurd especially considering there were only one or two other patrons in the bar. If I remember correctly on the receipt I think it said the server/bartenders name was McKenna or McKenzie possibly? My friends and I have always loved coming to the zigzag inn but after this experience, we will not be returning during the evening hours anymore due to "McUnimpressive". However, during the week days we will always come through when in town! read more

Being someone who used to eat here every weekend when I was a child, the food had gone way down hill! These days there is hardly any toppings, even when you order extra. The pizza is very bland, over cooked and made my whole group sick that night. They stopped using there homemade sauce and started using tomato paste (blah) The dining area is nice but I only saw my waitress once through the hour experience, leaving me with out a refill the entire night. A trip to the local mountains wouldn't be complete without a stop at Zig Zag Inn for pizza! The atmosphere is cozy and pub-like inside the old mountain cabin building. Because we can never bring ourself to order anything other than the pizza I can't speak on the rest of the menu, but we do enjoy the Meat Lover's, Greek style, and Barbecue Chicken Pizzas. Their thick crust is great and so is their thin. We also love the way they cut their pizza! The service is friendly and prompt. A very worthy local establishment to stop at if you're ever headed through the mountains on highway 26 in Oregon. Oh...and it's very easy to spot on the highway. read more

I had the prime rib, fantastic. I read some reviews that some people weren't happy with the food, not my wife's or my experience. I thought they had great food and great friendly service. Other than the quirky parking this place is a pleasant surprise. If what you care about is great food and service, this is the place to eat.

Do not come here if it's busy. We had a party of 9.. 3 orders were wrong, tomatoes on the salad were moldy, fries weren't cooked all the way, and 3 of us didn't get our food until the rest of our party was already done with their food. Eventually after waiting for so long, we had to cancel our order and just left. Worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. I'm surprised that this place has as many stars as it does.
