Boxes stored everywhere, dirty glass, chitchat in the kitchen.

The place is filthy and disorganized. The air and walls are greasy and gross. Seriously overpriced. Food okay. Service mediocre. Four employees standing around chatting instead of cleaning or filling coffee. Avoid this cafe at all costs.

Lumberjack Breakfast and Eggs Benedict

We stopped here on our way home out of Government Camp (less than 15 mins drive) for breakfast. It was pretty empty for a Monday morning so we had our pick of the seats and decided to sit right by the window. I would describe the style as cabin getaway vibes. They have the main restaurant part and a deli section for grab and go things. There was also an upstairs area where the restroom was but I wasn't sure if it was actually open for dining (my toddler loved the wooden bear statue toilet holder! How cute!) There was a corner area by the fireplace mantle with board games that seemed very family friendly. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and were told we can sit wherever. And water and drink orders were taken right away. I got the Lumberjack Breakfast special with the sourdough pancake option (available when they have them) and the sausage was super flavorful! My husband got the classic eggs Benedict. We got enjoyed our breakfast potatoes and I'm glad his came with fresh fruit! I haven't made up my mind about the sourdough pancake yet but I would recommend coming for breakfast here in our out of your way from your Government Camp trip!

Unfortunately this was a less than pleasant experience and it seems that it is quite common for ZigZag customers to be left waiting for over an hour without acknowledgment and apologies. We should have known that this was par for the course. Initially we were very excited to stop by the Cafe after a long hike in the Mt. Hood area. We went inside and asked if we could sit outside on the patio. After 15 minutes had gone by, I went in and had to ask if a server would come by with waters and take our order... it took probably another 10 minutes to get 3 waters and a Bloody Mary. We sat waiting and waiting for our food. An hour and 15 mins went by... we contemplated getting up and leaving as that type of service is inexcusable. Reluctantly we waited and finally the food came. The only reason I've given them two stars is because the food was pretty good. I hate to write a review like this but the lack of customer service or acknowledgment is disappointing. They could have preemptively shared that there is a longer wait time or apologized but there was none of that. Very very disappointing experience. They need to get their service sorted out in a major way!!

Firstly the atmosphere is so adorable you really Feel like you're in a little mountain cabin. It was the perfect little brunch spot on our way to Mt. Hood. Can't go wrong with chicken and waffles!! There was a nice outdoor seating area. The country fried steak wasn't our favorite. The meat was sort of tough and thick, but I'd definitely stop here again when traveling through. It was an overall good experience.

Marionberry pancake

Best biscuits in Oregon! I'm a southerner, and this is a proper southern biscuit, probably better than 90% of what you get in Texas. Crunchy exterior, fluffy interior, laminated in many layers. Perfect salt level. A thing of beauty. I had a scramble with a very generous portion--4 eggs. The marionberry pancakes are really good, with some crispy edges and buttered on the bottom. Atmosphere is typical mountain ambiance - full of wood paneling, eclectic, and so homey. Highly recommend the breakfast here!

Expensive food. Uninviting and rude staff. Looks run down from the inside and not really much of a store at al. Outside is pretty though! ;)

Waited about an hour for food that tasted a bit bland for the price tag. Interior is cute but overall I'd look elsewhere for breakfast

The slowest service around. Make sure you have over an hour and half of time around to wait.

My fiance planned a wonderful mountain getaway for us, and lucky for me- we had dinner reservations here. It was so chilly in December, We had a cold mountain day, and we bundled up to go to our dinner reservations and I have to say- I wasn't expecting much when I heard the name "Grill". I was thinking- burgers, fries, your typical post-ski grub. I was wrooong! We strolled into the coziest little restaurant and were greeted by the two lovely people working there. Felt like I very sweet family vibe. They steered us in the directions of the pasta dishes we ordered, and we had the Soup of the Day to start- I believe it was some kind of Tomato bisque and that hit the spot. The Hazelnut pasta was a hit for my fiance, and I loved that he got to try such a classic Oregon flavor in a pasta- how fun. My chanterelle ravioli filled me up so fast, I also loved being able to try chanterelles in this format. Both dishes felt very creative and full of so much Oregon pride! Delicious!

Fernie's Coffee & ZigZag 4 Stars…read more Headed up toward Mt. Hood, I swung into Fernie's Coffee & ZigZag on a cold mountain morning, chasing a memory more than a meal. Back in the day when this place went by a different name and the vibe was more Hoppin' they made some of the greatest biscuits and gravy around. Legendary stuff. So naturally, I had to try it again. Good news: it didn't disappoint. I won't swear it's as good as the original incarnation (time has a way of polishing memories), but it's a solid second-best, and that's saying something. The biscuits were hearty, the gravy did its job, and I left full and ready for the road. The coffee? Decent. It'll wake you up, won't change your life, but it'll get you to Timberline without falling asleep at the wheel. That said, the place feels like a ghost of its former self. Sad to see the market closed that part stings a little. The building still holds the echoes of what it used to be, and you can almost feel the history lingering in the corners. Service-wise, there was a moment. The lady at the counter was BS-ing with some guy at the window for a solid five minutes or maybe he was just standing there, staring into the void but either way, I was ready to order. That little pause cost them a star. Still, for the price, the convenience, and the fact that I was in and out with no line while heading up the mountain, it earns four stars. It's good, it's familiar, it's just missing something. If they ever find it again, this place could really shine.
