So happy to come upon this spot! We were planning on eating at Timberline Lodge but it was snowing up there and we wanted to leave while we still could. Tried the Maza but it was closed for a private party but they suggested "Huckleberries" - we looked it up and Huckleberry Inn - and THEY HAD HUCKLEBERRY PANCAKES! After the closure of the mile high ski lift and the alpine slide (preview weekend,) it was nice get a WIN! Delicious food, lovely waitress kept out coffee and water glasses full, came by at all the right times. Get the huckleberry pancakes! Light and fluffy and many huckleberries! This place. We've been here a few times over the years - it is essentially the only breakfast spot in Government Camp. Everything is expensive - $6.50 for a generic English muffin is wild. $15 for a short stack - what? These are resort prices and it's so far from that. Coffee is only $3 so that's nice. Good luck getting refills, never saw the waitress after she took our order. Speaking of which, I ordered the Mt. Hood Omelet that comes with hashbrowns and toast. I guess they only offer one type of toast because she wrote an "M" on her notepad, grabbed the menu out of my hand and walked away. I was (not so pleasantly?) surprised when my food arrived 3 minutes later. Magic. Food was fine, Sysco ingredients, jelly was runny and toast had the lightest smattering of butter. TLDR: Great staff. Edible food. Good selection of local libations by the can, none on tap. The food is of average diner / cafeteria fare, found anywhere in the US (perhaps by way of Sysco). It's edible, if not standout in any way. Pricing for most menu items is on par with the rest of this ski resort town, with a few surprisingly well priced offerings seemingly tarted at summer campers and camp staff. They provide food and lodging for a few area ski camps. Even if the food is no great shakes, though, the staff ***excels***. Those we've encountered are just nice, decent humans, unpretentious, tolerant, and patient. They do their jobs well, with good cheer. Six or seven stars for them. + Lots of local beers by the can. + Lot of items (milk shakes, pies) flavored with huckleberry, similar to blueberry, which grows wild in these parts and ripen in late summer Edited to add: We ended up trying a largish portion of the menu, including the huckleberry pie, which tastes just like blueberry pie and is on the sweeter side. It's baked every few days and is pretty good if you happen to catch it on baking day. Huckleberry shakes are a bit too sweet for our adult tastes, but the kiddos loved them of course. I came In ordered a top sirloin steak and specifically told the waiter I wanted it medium rare but more on the rare side, went to the bathroom for about 10 mins the hygiene box was full to the brim and I could see bloody pads as if it hadn't been changed in days, I came back and food was already done so fast service but the potatoes had no seasoning nor the broccoli and the steak was cooked all the way thru. The best things we had were the maple bar, Persian roll, huckleberry milkshake, & Reuben sandwich. The biscuits and gravy are not good, fries are frozen from a bag, coffee is awful... it seems like cash and carry ingredients thrown on a plate without a grain of salt. Food was fast (like not a good sign fast). The service was good, people were nice and pleasant. It's a small place with no seating for a big group, but it seemed clean and lodge-y. There aren't a ton of restaurants in Government Camp, so Huckleberry in is a decent option, especially when you're feeling famished after some adventure, or if you need a pre-adventure breakfast. First, I'll say the service was great. Staff were nice and down to earth. Food came out relatively quickly. We came for dinner around 5:30p in March, so a bit of the off-season. Now, why only 3 stars? The food was average in our opinion (my wife and two kids under 7). That said, the rest of the family wasn't feeling good, so that probably skews their perception of the meal, but I was fine and left underwhelmed. I ordered the patty melt which flavor wise was not my favorite. I think everything was under-salted, which may be preferred by some palettes. But I found myself having to add table salt to a few items, which I rarely do. That said, some may prefer that so they can choose how much salt they want with their food. I did enjoy my onion rings. But we probably won't be back for the lunch / dinner food. I wish we got breakfast...that stuff looked pretty good. I'd return to try breakfast and their famous milkshakes. Pricing is steep for what you get. But it's on the mountain, so it's not too surprising. Conclusion: You might like it depending on what you order and your taste preference. I have heard about Huckleberry Inn for years. I am vacationing in a nearby cabin so I was excited to go there for dinner tonight. I am not one to leave a bad review unless absolutely necessary. I ordered the chicken fried steak dinner. The sausage gravy was delicious. The meat was very tough and difficult to chew and there was like 10 times more salt than needed in the breading. It was accompanied by instant potatoes and broccoli that was turning yellow. This must have been the regular cooks day off or this place would have gone out of business by now. We stopped in after waking up for some sunrise photography. We were pleasantly surprised with breakfast! The sausage was moist and the pancakes were delicious. The eggs were cooked perfectly! I was very excited they had many tea options as well. Our waitress was attentive and was able to help us create the breakfast place we wanted. It helped that we had the whole place to ourselves! This review is for the insanely delicious huckleberry milk shakes. Prepare to pay $11 for a 16 oz shake--that is the only size one can get, and it's really, really good. It's a mountain cafe vibe with historic black and white photos lining the walls. I like the cozy, old cafe vibe. Every time we're here, we are greeted immediately and welcomed in. The huckleberry shakes were quite tasty. The shake was sweet until you got to the actual huckleberry, which were tart. The food was ready in 10 minutes. We ordered a short stack and a steak-n-eggs meal. I wanted some hash browns with my stack, but 8$ seemed a bit high for a side, so the hubby offered to share those that came with his meal. I was glad I was cheap, his portion was large...plenty for us both. All of the food was cooked well. Steak cooked to order, and crispy browns (always important!). All of our food tasted good, nothing extraordinary, but generally tasty. The cakes in the stack were big, as expected with 2 pancakes for 11$, but they were a smidge rubbery. We went here while we were up for Cosmic Sledding so it was later in the evening. The place was fairly busy with some large groups. They have a great menu and the service was excellent despite being busy. The food was good. My clam chowder was a little thin for my taste but had good flavor. My 10 year old got a new phone and had us download Yelp just so he could leave a positive review. Both of my kids are picky eaters and they both found easily found something they liked on the menu and asked to go back for breakfast the next day despite in being in the wrong direction for us to go home. I get it. It's busy ski season but it's not an excuse to be shockingly rude. Be grateful for the customers who keep your doors open. The grumpy old man asked if it was just 1, and it was. There was one empty booth. No one was waiting. He demanded that I come sit at the uncomfortable and noisy counter. I asked if I could sit at the booth and he snapped "Absolutely not! I have to save those for bigger parties." I sat at the counter and he handed me a menu. Then before I could even look at it he said "Now you have to be patient, we have a line of orders for the cooks so it's gonna take some time." That was it. I said "Ok thank you," then I got up and left. Too bad I drove from Vancouver to check this place out. Sorry I'm not part of a big family during the holidays.
