This place is absolutely terrible. I was 11 minutes late using cars for the program I live in Los Angeles. They charge me for a full day plus when I went to rent another car that car was an hour late and you did absolutely nothing for me. So I find it kind of odd that this criminal and corrupt horrible organization and charge me for a full day and fight all the way through the bank, but when I went to rent another guy, the other person returning into be an hour, and I didn't so much good. The other thing you need to consider? The person using the car before you they return the car only a couple of hours before your car isn't going to be fully charged so when you pick up the car, it's possible to pick up the car. Wish I could give it negative stars. Spent 2.5 hours on the phone with their customer service trying to figure out why my "card wasn't working" to extend the drop off time. We used 3 different cards, one of which DID take money from the account, yet they still said they didn't go through. First two men I spoke to were kind but had no resolutions, BRENDAAAA was the third person I spoke to and was awful. She was immediately rude & combative, basically just told me the same thing the last two people told me, and hung up on me every time I tried to call back. I'm usually very kind to service workers as I know this is not her fault personally, but she is the exception & enough reason for me to never use this service again. The last person we talked to immediately had it handled and while the charge is still not resolved, we were at least able to turn the car on and get it back to the drop off. Pros: *Easy to unlock and lock doors from app *They will refund you money when they see that they're in the wrong. CONS!! *Customer service is horrible! They have no knowledge when the app becomes very glitchy. *They will charge you for not bring the car back on time. (When you doing Uber, sometime you have to reject rides or cancel to be back on time or get a high late fee "166") *Some customer services reps are very rude! I would give the zero Stars if I could. The first car that I went to rent was literally not working so they made me rent two separate cars because there wasn't one for the time that I needed one. Instead of giving me my original rate for both cars I ended up paying more. I also was staying about an hour away from where I had to rent the car and that added on miles and time to my day and I ended up getting all these extra charges and fees. Also they charged me for all of the miles that I drove the first day instead of just the ones over 200. BEWARE!! If I could give them negative stars I would. Rented for a destination wedding weekend in LA. They changed my car multiple times before I arrived including 11 mins before I got there. The car waiting for me had 3 crystal meth pipes in the center console, a crystal meth zip pouch with paraphernalia in it on the passenger side, was dirty, smelled bad, had a broken trunk that I could not use, and customer service was an EPIC FAIL. I tried for 2 hours, to no avail, to reach customer service for a replacement car. The app kept closing randomly and would not allow me to submit photos or chose the option that said car could not be driven. So after missing 90% of the first event of the weekend, I decided to throw out the illegal items (with the help of the parking attendant) and take the car. I submitted several complaints with photos and videos through the website - because the app would not allow me to do so. It took a long time for customer service to even respond. Returning the car, I was 13 minutes late because, once again, the app kept closing and was not allowing me to submit end of trip photos. I was charged a $50 late fee + an $8 hourly rate for that 13 minutes. I submitted another complaint. After multiple emails back and forth, I was partially refunded for 2 hours ($7) of the 3 day trip that I booked and as a "courtesy" they waived the late fee. DO NOT waste your time or money with this company. I don't know why I did not read the reviews beforehand. Huge fail on my part. Lesson learned. Account cancelled. read more

I have only used Zipcar three times but all three of those times I had little to no issue and the small issue I had was promptly resolved. The issues I have/had are 1. There aren't any cars in Torrance where I live. I have to Uber to the car which is either in el Segundo or lax. Which whatever that's not that big of a deal. I have more of an issue with Ubers prices being so high but that's beside the point. 2. I was charged a late fee of $50. I was at the location at the correct time. I was waiting in the car for my Uber because it was pouring rain and I would have been soaked. My Uber showed up 6 minutes after my drop off time. I called customer service and easily got someone on the phone. The lady was extremely nice and removed the fee after I explained to her the situation. So all good. I like Zipcar. The prices are affordable, cars have been clean with the exception of one that smelled like smoke but it wasn't that bad and that's not Zipcars fault that's on the dip s**t that smoked in it. The gas is covered which is awesome!! I actually got a Toyota Tacoma last time and it was NICE!! I honestly don't know what everyone is complaining about because the Zipcar I use is awesome and convenient ish. So Zipcar if you're reading this maybe have some cars in Torrance but if that's not an option fine. Keep up the good work!!! read more

My comment will be for customer service and for the Zipcar company. I have been renting cars with this company to do Uber for over 3 months, and it's always the same. You reserve a car, and it's not at the location, and customer service doesn't help you at all. In the meantime, they take your money from the bank, and then they tell you it's pending. It takes a long time for it to show up in your account. The customer service representatives are very rude, uneducated, and lack the experience to help you with the problem that they and the company create. They wash their hands of it, and as a result, you've wasted time and money going to that location. Most of the cars don't even give you any credit, and if you forgot to put gas where you're supposed to, according to them, they charge you a lot of money. They keep that money, and sometimes the car I rented has less gas. All they do is tell you that your money will be refunded in 4 to 5 days, and then they wash their hands of it. When I arrived, the car had trash in it. The left/driver-side taillight was busted out, and there was a dent in the fender. Additionally, the car died in the middle of my trip, and I was forced to call AAA. My trip was also cut short electronically, for no reason, with my luggage locked in the back, and I didn't have access to the car for several hours. When I went to return the car (after having to call for emergency services since the customer support line didn't pick up) the return garage location was closed/locked, so I was forced to park the car less than a block away, and they are now claiming I owe them for "reclamation/retrieval." My application was rejected because my bank declined the charge due to suspicious activity. Even though I cleared the issue with my bank, Zipcar will not allow me to re-apply for a membership to re-process the payment. I called and talked to Customer Service and it is their "policy" to never allow anyone to re-apply after an application is rejected, even if it's only for clerical payment issues, not driving history or other eligibility issues. No wonder they've fallen off the face of the earth... They used to be so popular... read more

Customers worldwide complain about the cars, the scheduling, the online systems, and the customer service, all of which seem now geared to drive AWAY Zipcar customers (and potential ones). Maybe to shut down Avis's & Budget's biggest competitor to car rental? My own experience is with Zipcar's customer service, which is basically a firewall to actually resolving any issues. You call the number; they can do nothing but read the website to you, they pass it on to an "expert," and then they ignore you. Want follow-up? You have to start over. I used to love Zipcar and it was one of the reasons I decided to give up my car. But over the past couple of years, the cars are not as clean as they used to be -- food trash left in car, cigarette ashes, musty smell and once, the car trunk was filled with someone else's clothes! I have to agree with Stella M.'s review. I've used ZipCar for years and loved it and when I moved from the Bay Area to LA, kept my ZipCar membership. Have had nothing but problems and in the process of cancelling my membership (see other reviews about that process!). I love the concept of car share and recommend it with another company, not ZipCar. With ZipCar you have to book about a week ahead because they don't have enough cars. When I have gotten a booking, I've shown up and cars aren't there or the "lock/unlock" system doesn't work. The times that for whatever reason, I couldn't get into a car I'd booked, there was no option for rebooking a different car...because all the cars were booked, so instead I was offered a free cancellation of my booking and a $25 driving credit for my next booking, which never showed up. Also, although they claim to offer 24/7 trip support, the customer support line on the ZipCard rings to a call center that's closes at 8pm Eastern. Turns out for trip support, instead of calling the number on the card you should call the accident number, who knew? Use a different car share service! read more

We still keep getting calls from debt collectors asking to pay, even though we paid it 6 weeks ago. Called there customer service (billing dept), they said it will take 8 weeks to just update the collectors that we have paid money and until then we will keep getting calls and they can't do anything since there system works like that. My daughter was trying to use the service. They took her money without allowing her to access the website AT ALL. Their policy says they issue refunds, however my daughter has tried to get MY money back, but was emailed by the company saying they dont give refunds. They said they use the money to do a background check of her driving record. They also say they can't give you a copy, although ANY other company that does a personal check on you allows you a copy of YOUR information. The coverage map has only decreased in my time since living here. There is a shocking lack of cars, and I have been switched to another car, miles away, several times. Plenty of former Zipcar spots, none of them are filled. The closest zipcar to me is a 45 minute walk. What is the point? Cars are often unavailable when you need them, and NOT located everywhere. 7/10 times the car will be dirty either inside/outside/both. They charge WAY too much to use and the limit in mileage per day is ridiculous. 180 miles per day? That uses half a tank of gas, 7 gallons max unless I'm speeding. That is about $30. They charge at LEAST $72/day PLUS tax. So they're making crazy profit. And if you go over, they charge you. If you rent it for a way shorter time, you're getting even more ripped off because there's no way you can make it worth it in gas. Also, they don't have a large selection of cars. When it was Flexcar there used to be a pickup truck (VERY useful) and a nicer selection of cars. Now it is just the base models (shitty radio) of tiny Nissan (sentra) or Toyota hybrids. Ipod docks are a joke. It is just a jack with no recharge capability, and it is a hit or miss whether or not the car will have a cable so you should bring your own. Or not, because if you forget and leave it in there, it will probably be stolen by the next user. read more

I can't believe that someone has not sued Zipcar in a class action lawsuit yet. I have(had) the basic plan where the Zipcar member pays a higher hourly fee for rentals with no monthly fee. This works for many members who infrequently neee a car. Zipcar recently sent out a spam looking email stating that they've taken the liberty to switch me to a paid monthly account whereby they would charge me a monthly fee, even without using their cars. I did not authorize this and I can't believe that their management team thought that this was a viable way to do business. Furthermore, the only way to cancel your membership is to call them. Their number is busy for hours and now that I've gotten through I'm presently on hold. This is corrupt behavior to change a membership for someone (that results in monthly fees) without them signing up for it. I'm thinking that they will lose whatever loyalty they had out of this move. (I know I will never use them again) Follow up: I reported Zipcar to the better business bureau and they never apologized or even acknowledged the shady antics. She called customer service and they said they would send out road side assistance. She waited for over two hours, in the dark, on the side of the road, and nobody came. I finally called them myself because her phone was about to die and I didn't want her to use up her battery. It was past 11:00 in the middle of nowhere, clearly an unsafe situation, and there was absolutely no concern or urgency on their part. All they gave me was excuses and one agent, Ernesto, actually hung up on me. They rented her a car that wasn't working and as I read through reviews, this seems to be a pattern with them. They won't notify even if the booking got cancelled because of a valid reason, and well in advance. You have to call them and then they will check if there's some "system" issue. ZIPCAR could never be professional if it continues like this! Only college kids could handle something like this and I hope they break down each and every car, and the company shuts down! As a former member, I cancelled my membership due to the high cost for just for 7-8 hour rental. Also inconvenience of having a specific car that I first booked, not being available even though I booked the rental car about a week in advance. I rarely used Zipcar, for those reasons, high cost/car chosen not available. I don't like switching cars if not needed. The only positive was if it was a higher priced car, I wasn't charged the higher price as I only book economy cars. Selection of cars or availability wasn't good either. I had booked an economy car for Thanksgiving day, only to be informed the day before that the car I reserved had mechanical issues. The rep told me the closest Zipcar was in Torrance for a replacement rental and Zipcar would pay any Uber ride to that location. Excuse me!!!! Apparently the rep didn't bother to try and locate a car conveniently within my current location to see if there were any Zipcars available nearby. I had to do that myself and informed the rep that a car was available for use on Thanksgiving and was more convenient to get to. I took Uber to that location, which Zipcar did pay for. This was the only positive about the whole interaction/reservation ordeal. That was the last straw for me. Zipcar had no intention of expanding their fleet of cars in the LA area. There were next of zero cars for Zipcar even in Santa Monica. So if you want to spur of the moment rent a Zipcar say in Santa Monica or other locales around LA, you're out of luck. Where do I start? I've taken a few punches from Zipcar in the past - dinged up cars I've spent 10 minutes photo documenting before leaving the lot so they don't pin it on me, dirty cars, very low gas, paid for gas because there is no gas card and then not reimbursed. List goes on and on. But this one takes the cake. I have about 4 hrs between checking out of my hotel and jumping on a flight home from LAX. Happens to be my Step-Mom's 80th bday and I'm in town so I call the night before to say I'd love to take her to lunch while I'm in limbo waiting for my flight. She says that would make her day and I book my Zipcar near LAX. Get to Avis rental lot where Zipcar says Ira (my car) would be parked and there is no car where the pindrop indicates. Actually, there is no Zipcar lot - just a twisted area of linked fences and concrete barricades. So apparently it's an Avis employee lot of cars without a Zipcar sign in sight. Had to ask an Avis guy where's the Zipcars. He says they moved lots and points 300 yards across the Avis lot. Would have been nice to have the right location but I pushed honk on my app just to be sure he's not wrong. Silence - other than her planes landing overhead. However, a message pops up saying the previous driver had not yet returned the car. No worries. It will take me some time to navigate a labyrinth of parked rentals, bustling Avis shuttles and abandoned construction areas as I'm walking in the indicated direction. I'm then alerted that I shouldn't be walking in this area by a nice Avis guy who gives me a lift in the Avis car he's taking to the carwash. I tip him $5 when he gets me to a barely recognizable Zipcar lot and I jump out. Side note - he says no one ever tips him. He deserved it for at least providing the most customer service I receive all day. During my commute I called Zipcar and placed on hold for 15 mins. Once I'm at the correct lot I honk again and try the unlock button on the app. Nothing. Finally a Zipcar agent answers. She says nothing can be done but mentions the driver says he'll be back soon. At this point it's been 1/2 hr and I tell my Step-Mom I probably won't make it. I get on the Avis shuttle and decide I'll just head to the airport. About a minute on the shuttle trip and I'm notified that my reservation has started and can't be cancelled. I ask the shuttle driver to get off, which is ironically right where I was first directed by Zipcar to meet my car, Ira. So, I walk the 300 yards again but no nice Avis guy this time around to give me a ride. Finally get to the car at 50 minutes after the reservation start time. Screw it. I hustle to my Step-Mom's to have a quick 30 minute "bite" instead of a long lunch to catch up. I return the car on time and get to the airport where I settle in and decide maybe I should check my account. Here is the kicker. . . Zipcar charged me for my original 10am pick up time even though I didn't have access until 10:45am and states that I returned it 2 hours late. Charged me those 2 hrs and a $100 late fee. I almost had to laugh because I did try to extend my ride a 1/2 hr to have a little more time at lunch but they said someone else had booked it. No one got in the 15 minutes I was waiting near by at the shuttle stop so my assessment - things went wrong on many levels and I suspect this is business as usual for Zipcar. Wish my customer rep was more empathetic. Wish Zipcar would update location lots when they move 300 yards. Wish I had a '64 Impala. read more
