I played ZogSports volleyball for two seasons and thought the games were generally well organized. I enjoyed having a weekly game to look forward to, and it was a good amount of exercise and socializing. My team even got friendly enough to hit up a bar on occasion after a game and most of my original team even came to my birthday party. In the second season that I played, the organizers were starting to have some issues with facilities and also one game during which the referee didn't show. However they were otherwise quite professional. The locations tend to have convenient parking and the hours for games are reasonable. I was hoping to switch to their newly formed Sunday leagues but the most recent season of that got cancelled due to low enrollment. At this point I am looking into switching to a different sport or a local league by a different organization, but I'm glad I got my start here! read more

ZogSports - Pre-game practice - Amateur Sports Teams Near Me - San Francisco, California

This review is purely for Zog's volleyball league. This league is extremely beginner-level. Lots of work teams and new players. Occasionally you will have a couple of people who come into this league knowing how to play volleyball but are there anyways for an ego boost. If you are new to volleyball, read here. Yes, this league may be a good starting point as it's very beginner-level play, it's good for work teams and meeting new people. But you won't want to be here for long. There are the occasional try-hards that will come into the league to feel good about themselves by hitting hard and running plays on a net that's lower than women's height. Another downside is that some of these players think they can play but in fact they are very dangerous and make it very unsafe. Landing under the net and causing ankle sprains when you block is very common here. So play smart, watch out for others. If you have some volleyball experience and understand the game, read here. This league is very poorly run. You have one ref that does not understand the rules of volleyball. No calls are made, clear doubles where the ball is spiraling, crazy players who jump and land under the net, and players touching the net and lifts. You call your own lines, so in and out calls are all on you and the other team. The ref literally is there to just blow the whistle for serve and then flip the score. They dont even have anyone setting up the nets for you as well, so you need to set it up yourself. The net is literally lower than womens height. So if you're here playing with some new friends who are learning to play, have some integrity to play to the level of others and be safe. I played in this league before it became Zog (Dynamic sports) id say it has changed but not for the better. Same stuff as it was 5-6 years ago. If you are looking for some better play there are other leagues out there. Campbell Community center used to have a good one they may or may not still be running. Then there's IVL if you're looking for competitive play. Zog by far is the most expensive league and the total amount of games you play in the season is less than all these other leagues I mentioned. So if you're factoring bang for your buck. Zog is definitely not that. read more

Our women's basketball team has been playing with Zogsports since 2016. We paid for a season to play in 2020 and then covid happened and we were unable to play. Since then they have refused to refund our $500 that we put towards a new season saying we can only use it as a credit towards a new season... However now that they are open again they are only allowing the men's leagues to play. So we literally can't even use it for a new season since they're excluding the women's league. We want to play basketball. That's all. The fact that you've prioritized the men's league over the women's leagues is extremely disappointing and blatantly sexist. Whatever you do don't give your money to this sexist & discriminatory company. read more

Currently on my second season, already excited for my third! I used to be hesitant to do a weeknight sports league but it's very enjoyable through Zog. While I was anticipating the gyms changing per week having a consistent location had actually made it way easier to plan my weeks. I haven't played volleyball since high school but playing in the High Casual league has reignited my love for the sport and allows me to hang out with coworkers in a setting that's (for once) not a bar. Without the different tiers of competitiveness/skills I probably wouldn't be playing so I'm so glad there are! The volleyball refs are a little lax sometimes but I guess that's how our league is too. All in all, it's awesome to have Zog in the city. read more

irst, there has not been a friendly atmosphere. The umpires and league officials did not make the league a fun environment. There was no effort to make it a sportsmanlike atmosphere or make it a fun environment. Most of the time, we would show up and there would be no candor, friendliness or willingness to share supplies. Second, there was no organization. We played two teams that had a majority of the same players. Also, we played the same pitcher 3 times???? I do not know how that is allowed. It would have been more fun to play a larger variety of people to have a larger variety to meet new people. It makes the whole league lose integrity. Especially when we are trying to get more games in. Third, there is a lack of knowledge of the rules from the umpires. We played a team that was playing 8 guys in the field and 2 girls the whole game. Nothing was said. But then we were called out on a technicality the next game for not hitting enough girls even though we were hitting girls between every 3 guys like we were the whole season. Fourth, the facilities and materials are lacking. There is no extra equipment for people to share such as league bats. Also, the league gives out no team shirts. Every other Rec league in SF I have played in gives out shirts. Lastly, there are no accessible bathrooms in the facility. My girlfriend was trying to use the bathroom but there was only one overflowing with toilet paper and feces. She had to use the bathroom in a bush. All of this for $1250 for a team. No organization, no resources, no bathrooms. I have played pick up games that have been more organized. I will be writing a review on every platform of our disappointment with the league. read more

Beware of Safety issues: Oakland Volleyball League I have been paying with Zog for 3 years. My team has 2 people who have NEVER played volleyball. The Oakland "Product Manager" placed us the in the ADVANCED league. Half my team quit after the first two games as they were concerned about their safety playing with extremely advanced players. I reached out to Zog who said they could not do anything but refund only the unused portion of our $800 payment. What a disappointing experience and poor customer service. We were not offered to be placed in a lower league nor given any other option but to deal with it or quit. We are now looking for a new league to join. read more

Honestly this company was much more organized during the pandemic. This business is money hungry which I get, however it's extremely frustrating when the service you're paying for is very unorganized. ($1000 per team for one season of volleyball). Games start late more than 50% of the time therefor referees cut games short. 3 games were postponed due to poor organization with the gym as they were "double booked" with other sports games. So over it. Too bad there aren't many leagues to compete with this declining organization... read more

I'm submitting a review for basketball, specifically the co-ed league. The other sports could operate differently, but I only played the one sport. Pros: 1. Meeting new, cool people 2. Scheduled time to get some organized team sports in. 3. Access to a nice gym Cons: 1. Lack of a score/timekeeper. Teams need to do it on their own 2. Very poor officiating. Every team plays zone because they know you can just hack people in the middle without any calls. I doubt either of the refs in the majority of our games ever played the sport. I wouldn't recommend playing basketball through ZogSports if you're looking for a somewhat serious league. If you're out just to have fun, it could work for you. read more

ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE COMPANY! STOLE MY MONEY!!!! ZogSports specifically as a refund policy stated on their payment confirmation emails that any player can be FULLY refunded TWO WEEKS prior to the start of league/event. The league I signed up for is much further out than two weeks and the "best" zogsports can do for me is offer me credit or make me wait 12 months to get my refund back.... This is 100% unacceptable and a clear violation of their refund policy. I am in an email conversation with a NICK CRUIT who has been extremely unresponsive and unhelpful throughout this entire process. He has completely ignored ZogSports' refund policy and its unacceptable. I will NEVER be signing up for another league with this company and I suggest others do the same... I love the Sunday ZogSports Volleyball league. It is well organized and the people are wonderful to play with. I felt that my skill level was matched perfectly and while the games are competitive, they are also fun and not too taxing. I totally recommend giving it a try! read more

I'm not normally a person to go out of my way to write reviews for stuff, but this "company" needs to be exposed, and at the very least people need to know what they're getting themselves into for the basketball league. First off, last night we had our championship game for the men's basketball league. Our team was down by 1 point with 7 seconds left in overtime, and all of the sudden one of the refs said the game is over because their time using the gym had expired for the night. We tried telling him how little time was left and it would be done in a second and he refused to listen. Even the team up by one thought it was ridiculous and was telling him so. He ending up rudely walking out and didn't say another word. Also, someone who works for the gym was there to let him know the time in the gym was running out, but after the ref left, we spoke to him and he said it was totally fine for us to finish and he told the ref the same thing. This ref deliberately chose to be an absolute dick and end the game with 7 SECONDS LEFT IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A ONE POINT GAME. The refs response while he was walking out was "write an email" when dozens of us were complaining to him. Second, I've been in several basketball leagues and this one is about twice as expensive. Also, there is no clock (you have to ask the ref to look at his watch to tell you the time left), you have to keep your own score (no scoreboard), and they have you play on the side courts, not the main one. This league cost each of us over $100 and came with ZERO amenities. Every other league I've been in had everything I mentioned and was at most $50. Third, the refs are ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. We all thought this before the whole walkout thing I mentioned. It doesn't take that much skill to be an "Okay ref," but every ref we saw had zero knowledge of basketball and made consistent horrible calls that were blatantly obvious. You could tell they had no training and new nothing about the game. Fourth, our team all understands that we are going through covid, but we are all vaccinated and there was ZERO mention of having to play in a mask until we had already paid and it strictly said there were no refunds. I searched far and wide before we signed up to find any info on that and couldn't find a thing. Then right after I submitted payment, it popped up like a blatant notification on our team page. We all wanted to dismantle the team after finding this out, but like I said they wouldn't offer refunds, even the same day of purchase. THEY TRAP YOU! All in all, this is the first review of anything I have ever done. Imagine how bad of an experience this had to be for me to waste my time writing this much. As someone who loves sports and basketball and has been in several leagues, for the love of god STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS ONE AND YOU'LL THANK ME. There free agency is a mess. You'll be out on a overcrowded team and in reality get to play 20 min due to this. They've raised prices and reduced number of games in a season. The value of what you get for what you pay for is not worth it. They also schedule games from 9:30-10:30 most of the season which completely removes any social aspect of the league. read more

Seeing as ZogSports revolves around many different types of sports, I would like to clarify this rating is related to Basketball. As mentioned by others, this is far and away the worst basketball league I have ever been a part of. To summarize the email that I sent to Zog (that went unresponded): No visible game clock No personal foul tracking No zog-employed scorekeeper Extremely inexperienced, inconsistent referees that allow a contact sport to get massively out of control Lack of shirts/jerseys being present at the location (instead being at a location 2-3 miles away from our gym that need to be picked up during a relatively small window that is during most people's workday) So many better/safer alternatives in SF. read more

Positives: as a first-time user who just started ZogSports this month - in their coed basketball league, I must say it lives up to what I've researched via Yelp, Facebook, Google, and the ZogSports website itself. I entered as a free agent with other free agents in my team and so far, it seems we're the only free agent team and it shows! Other teams play as if they have tons more experience. At the same time, people are friendly (everyone shakes hands when the game ends), people play safely overall, and your teammates and competition are not too high and not too low - just about right. Games start and end in a timely manner, prices per season (thankfully) are at reasonable rates, your email inquiries get replied to, and you even get a ZogSports shirt at game 1. Friends, significant other, and relatives can come to watch free of charge, and you can even come in to the facility to practice up to 15 minutes before start of your game. The teams have great sportsmanship (very friendly toward everyone - teammates and opponents included). People exhibit plenty of care for folks who get injured as well - and trust me, injuries are more common than you think. I got 1 per month while playing this season, and they were all related to falls so we all need to be careful about how we move and where our legs are, when affecting other people who drive the lane. One time there was a facility scheduling issue where there were non-league games happening, which pushed back each game an hour. Fortunately the referees informed us that we would play after they were done, and how they handled the facility issue was very well. We also have folks who will help you improve too, which I'm a big believer in (player development). Brief lessons like adding arc to the shot, communicating on defense, and so on - I found that valuable from fellow teammates. Negatives: Unfortunately keeping time and keeping score seem to be 100% delegated to folks on the bench. This takes some getting used to, as I thought it would be like the NBA where referees control a wall scoreboard along with time. Secondly, halfway through the season, we encountered a glaring substitution issue. A female didn't even show up to the first scrimmage and dropped out shortly after it. Then there were players who kept missing the consequent 7 games, causing a substitution issue, which led to severe fatigue on the court against opponents who almost always had an extra guy or female sub. I'm not in supreme shape from head to toe and am slowly improving on that as I learn from every game. So I wasn't too happy about the nonstop game time without at least a little rest, which heavily fatigued me and therefore increased my rate of injuries....it was surely the same for my teammates. I was very grateful that ZogSports was flexible enough to allow various non-roster folks to help out every now and then. Once, we even had another team's player help us as a sub. What I'm trying to get at here is that ZogSports needs to improve in this area in having people be subs for us. Every team should have at least 1 female and at least 1 male sub, in case of fatigue and injuries. -------------------- Other notes: there may be the rare troublemaker who acts immaturely like pounding the floor, purposely yelling behind someone to intimidate them as they're attempting a layup, and so on...but fortunately they're not that common. Another point is be sure to check the scoreboard regularly to ensure scorekeepers keep track of the right score - a 2 is a 2 within the line and anything on or beyond the line is a 3. There are times when scorekeepers make mistakes like when they track a 2 as a 3 or a 3 as a 2, or when they thought they entered a free throw point (1 pt) and the scorekeeping system registered it, but when the buzzer sounds and it didn't register - just stay cognizant of that and work with them and the referee to correct the scorekeeping. read more

Everything Zog stands for is awesome. I love sports and am always looking for leagues. However, I have been let down so many times I will never give them my money again. It is a discrace what they are doing. So many times we have shown up and there was no equipment, no refs, or scheduling issues. When you pay hundreds of dollars for 6 or 7 games and they waste your time, it is very frustrating. Also, the rules they set for softball are atrocious. You have to run and touch a base that sits way behind the ump and every play at home is a force out. If you have ever played anything competitively, Zog will be sure to dissappoint you in one way or another. read more

Disclaimer: My review pertains to my personal experience playing kickball during the spring season. I understand that experiences will vary based on sport, the team you play on, and on the season. YMMV. Overall, Zogsports has good intentions but I did not come out of it feeling very impressed. My main issue is that Zogsports kept rescheduling our games, and it did not feel very organized as a result of that. When a league keeps rescheduling games, it doesn't create a very strong incentive for players to show up regularly. I signed up for a spring kickball league (that plays on Thursdays) back in February for a league to start in early March, and for it to end in mid-April (about 6 weeks of game play). I paid the early-bird price of $95 at the time. I was told that we would get a welcome email at least a week before the regular season starts. Three days before the league is going to start (in early March), I get an email saying that the start of the league is postponed by a week due to rain (now to start in mid-March). Understandable (though playing in rainy weather would have been fun). I figured we would receive details about our league later that week. Then, two days before we were supposed to play in mid-March, I get another email that the kickball season is pushed to start in early April due to weather issues. So, after a month of multiple postponements, we are set to play in early April. I show up to the first game, and only one other person from my team actually shows up, forcing us to forfeit. (Oh and guess what? It was raining the week of our first game as well. If rain was why it was postponed to begin with, why didn't it just get postponed again?) I show up again the following week, and in the following week, our opponent has to forfeit because they didn't have enough players show up. Then, all of a sudden, during the middle of our season, we get yet another email that another one of our games in the middle of our season is postponed (without explanation), which extends our season by yet another week. All these rescheduling issues and non-shows made me feel like I didn't get my value from this league. I like to take pride in being able to show up to my commitments, and I didn't appreciate that with so many postponements that a) I had to switch my availability around on Thursday nights so much, and b) how many forfeits I had to witness, which I think is a product of how shaky the schedule was to begin with. What incentive do people have to show up that even when they do, they have to witness a forfeit? My advice is that if weather is a deterrent, don't bother hosting outdoor sports during the winter through early spring. Overall, it was fun playing kickball when we could, but the management/scheduling leaves more to be desired. My impression after this experience is that Zogsports SF is as flaky as the people of SF. read more

Update* So I have been playing in this league since beginning of 2016 for Thursday night mens basketball. roughly ~13 seasons. Let me just say that this league has gone down hill. Here are the reasons: - Used to be 8 games in a season (including playoffs). Now there's 7 including playoffs - Playoff games are 2 in a day. Always been this way but I think it's a terrible playoff structure - T-shirt they give are absolutely trash. - Refs are very very bad and inconsistent. They obviously have no experience or awareness of the rules of basketball. There may be 1 decent ref assigned but the other ref is absolutely terrible and should never ref a game - Floors are always slippery - Sometimes the gyms are played on middle school courts where the court is very small for 10 grown adults - There used to be a designated HH spot but now that is gone for a couple of seasons now - League fee are expensive for what you get. $950 for a team early registration and $1150 for regular registration We will be playing at UCSF in Mission Bay where the competition, refs, and courts are more consistent and better. Price is better at $88 per person. This league may be more suited for light hearted competition read more

I would give Zog a zero if I could. In the past year they have changed the amount of matches we get per season from 8 to 7, even though we pay the same team fee each season. Additionally, they changed our league from a Tuesday night league to a Tuesday and Wednesday night league, to a Tuesday and Thursday night league, and now back to a Tuesday and Wednesday night league. Last season we paid expecting it to be a Tuesday and Wednesday night league and after we paid our team fee they changed the nights of play. This season, they advertised the league as starting October 16th, later changed it to October 23rd. Perhaps as a result of this, they made weeks where a team plays both Tuesday and Wednesday on the same week. Given that fact without prior notification, myself and several others one my team are missing two matches when we are gone for only one week. We paid with the expectation that we would have one game a week like we have every single other season. Moreover, when you follow up about these issues no change or earnest attempt is ever made to fix these issues. Instead, staff respond that they have so many schedules to create, they couldn't possibly change anything. I've played soccer for over 20 years and in rec. leagues for a decade. I have never seen a less player and team-centric league. The mismanagement is awful. read more

I wanted to love ZogSports- I wanted to find a company that was good for causal yet competitive sports - the other basketball teams were great. ...I usually just do what I do and let things go. I can't as I am worried for others and honestly just irritated that companies can screw over a group of paying costumers and nothing really happens. A few issues... 1. The league did not have score keepers- it is in the fine print and was not used for my low rating, but so you know... 2. Only a couple refs showed up consistently and no one seemed to be there from ZogSports to check in. 3. A scheduling problem happened for our playoff games, no email, the claim is that JamTown messed up. Check out my review for that place also. 4. If a team forfeits there is a fee- weird huh how I can guarantee we will get no money back for the scheduling issue we encountered for the playoffs, we all showed up and were told to leave. Sure the game is being rescheduled, but I am an adult trying to stay active and have scheduled my life for the weeks that were given to me.... I have prior engagements the date of reschedule. Great job covering your side... Still screwed over a group of paying costumers. Do us all a favor and stay away- find another way to stay active- you will get more out of it and you won't have to spend $900 for a team entry fee. read more

I came to San Francisco with my girlfriend, and neither of us knew anyone here. After looking online for some way to hang out with other new-to-SFers, I came across Zog Sports and decided to join up. There's a multitude of leagues available, across different levels of competition. There's soccer, football (two hand touch, which worked out perfectly for my girlfriend that is deathly afraid of contact), dodgeball, volleyball, and if you like drinking- cornhole and flip cup tournaments get pretty intense every week! Literally everyone I've met through Zog Sports has not only been fun, kind, and competitive while remaining sportsmanlike, but it seems like it is an open community that help each other out on and off the field. The GM, Nick Cruit, is very accessible and promptly answers any questions you may have. Zog Sports is great for networking as well, since people from all backgrounds and experiences culminate into this amazing community. Everyone looks out for one another, everyone has fun, and everyone is left wondering why they weren't a Zog Sports member earlier. read more

Heads up if you're playing flag football: They (very quietly) changed the league from 8 games to 6 games when they took over Dynamic. Still the same price... pretty weak honestly. Monday night basketball games with my co-ed team are what I look forward to every week! ZogSports is incredibly organized and efficient. I joined a team through a simple online application process, and have received consistent e-mail communication about when the games are, who my team members are, and any additional news. You also have a log-in through their website which gives you the schedule and team standings in case you forget. ZogSports organizes all of the games, the facilities, and the refs. You just gotta show up and have fun! Best of all, you're playing for a charity of your choice. I would definitely recommend joining a ZogSports league if you want to stay active, make new friends, and do some good all at the same time! read more

I zog three times a week! Zog is awesome! They strike a great balance between being competitive and socializing. This past season I played volleyball twice weekdays (once in each the lower and middle divisions), football on Saturdays all on random teams and got set up with great groups of people across the board. Re Indoor volleyball: the league keeps getting better since I joined 3 quarters ago. 4 stars because it's in the way of 5, almost there. I played on Wednesdays in Galileo, highest 2 leagues. Upper gym is great, downstairs one is tight... But I don't have to travel more than 5 min from home! The standard in the leagues is getting more and more uniform, which is key for everyone to have fun. A few late hiccups here and there from refs, but not often. I've played a few seasons with a evening soccer league with Zogs and loved it. The competition level is just right. Every one knows how to play but it's not too intense or physical. Fields are good and there are always refs and some basic stuff like ice packs in case you get banged up. I would suggest Zogs to anyone looking for some competitive play. read more

Not a big fan of ZogSport. Played in a couple of different leagues around the bay and this is the worst by far. Teams need to bring their own balls, they need to bring the goals and put them back to the storage area, refs are terrible (not running, not commited, looks like they are focusing on something else than the game itself) and I am really wondering what we are paying for? I LOVE ZogSports! I started playing football with Zog when they first came to SF last year and it was pretty small then - only football and only a handful of teams. I joined a team with alumni from my university, plus some randos, and we're now on our third season together! It's a great combination of meeting new people, friendly competition, socializing at the happy hours afterwards, and contributing to charity if even in a small way. Been playing in ZogSports volleyball in SF for a couple of seasons now, great league and lots of fun. Community managers are responsive and accommodating on location and schedule preferences. There are ~5 different levels and it's easy to find the right one for your team. Would recommend for either corporate leagues or groups of friends. read more

It's a good organization however could do a better job of switching refs ever week. We've requested different referee for our games however the change was never made. At the end of the day I would recommend it because everything else is very well organized. Only thing would sweeten the deal is if the price was a little lower. read more
