Simple review of a place with not much nostalgia, but is always fun and satisfying. A tiki bar spot on a street full of places to go out, but it's different. Very laid back spot and the drinks are amazing. We've been about 5 times now and every bartender recommends a new drink to us and they are all wonderful. You'll never see the place on TV or probably have another Brooklyn hipster do a magazine article about it, but I feel for some reason my next trek to Brooklyn will include a visit to the Zombie Hut. Finding a tropical escape admidst the skyscrapers and subway tracks is no easy feat. However, upon walking into Zombie Hut you can't help but forget about the trash that lies outside. Upon hearing about the Scorpion Bowl, I knew I needed to come here. After all, those that drink together, stay together. This place has much more to offer than the reasonably priced fruity drinks and cheap beers though. What more? Cabana huts, festive lights, and cozy sitting corners provide a great ambiance to relax and escape the buzz of the city. But what really made this experience a hit was the plethora of board games. From Boggle to Battleship, they have them ALL. I can only imagine spending hours here when it is crowded on a weekend and making new friends over a game of Apples to Apples. Pitchers of sangria, Zombie drink, and guava mojitos are all calling my name so I'm sure you'll find me and my friends gathered around a game of Scattergories here in the very near future. read more

Super nice guy! He even remembers my friends who travel there a few times a year from Rhode Island! As soon as you walk in it's warm and inviting! My new favorite bar ever! I love a good theme, and the Zombie Hut nails a theme I love- tiki! Zombie Hut features a classic tiki cocktail menu- Bahama Mama, Singapore Sling, Mai Tai! I had the Bahama Mama and the Singapore Sling- both were amazingly delicious. The drinks are affordable ($7) and strong! The decor is also super fun! The Decor is pretty cool and the garden is very nice. My only issue was that some of the seating is right in front of the bathroom. I didnt know that when I sat down with friends and well... someone blew that can up and every time it opened we were assaulted by something so horrendous it should be an illegal smell. Had an afternoon date with a lad here after we both figured out we had obsessions with tiki bars. Total tiki bar vibe. The place was quiet around 3pm on a rainy Saturday. We got two sits barside and were able to talk to each other calmy. The service was quick and non-intrusive. The drinks were good. Good not great. Reminded me of drinks we made in college ourselves. But they're pretty strong so there's that. After around 2.5 rounds we began to feel a bit tipsy. The decor is very tiki, but it's more dive tiki. And not in the charmy way Otto's is.There's something slightly off about this place. I was a bit disappointed. I'll come back in the summer and check out the backyard. If you're in the area it's worth a visit. But I don't think it's necessary to travel out of the way to come here. read more

It's been a staple of the hood for-evah and for good reason. It's consistent and WYSIWYG. No pretense. No trying to be hipster. No attitude. This is one of my staple bars on Smith Street and I've been here a few times with friends and it's a super fun place especially on days where outdoor patio hangs are the only way to go :). Being the alchy that I can (occasionally) be, I've pretty much tried all the tiki cocktails on their menu and my personal favorites are the "Planters Punch" and "The Suffering Bastard" - warning though if you're not a fan of sweet drinks then steer clear of their menu and go for a beer (pretty good beer selection for a place that doesn't pride itself on being a 'beer bar') or have the bartender make you something else, they do have a fully stocked bar - and they're CHEAP! It's like always happy hour in here! As far as their big group friendly drinks go, the scorpion bowl is a delicious medley of Jameson, 151 and a concoction of mystery juices (well...at least a mystery to me!) and their MaiTai in a HUGE mason jar is both strong and DELISH! People watching here is generally pretty fun as people that go here tend to be pretty cool and they don't really attract a douchey clientele, which is a HUGE plus for me. They have a laid back vibe, play your typical rock/bar music at a good volume that allows for chitter chatter and they have tons of board and card games for when you're there with a group of friends and a few (awesome!) drinks later the competition bug BITES! There is also a fire place here...random...but just thought I'd mention it. The reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 is that they have no food here and the smell of the food from Wing Bar literally right next door wafts into the outdoor patio and makes my (often times when here tipsy) stomach growl and pout. This is no bueno. On the bright side they do allow you you bring food from any place in the neighborhood and there are PLENTY of options so that's def a plus. Either way Zombie Hut is a SUPER cool place, I always have a good time, the bar staff is friendly and great AND THEY HAVE MERMAID (and seahorse, palm tree and flamingo) SWIZZLE STICKS. After having a great VEGAN dinner, we checked FB and found out a few yelper friends were meeting here and since we weren't too far away, we decided to crash the party! And on a warm, Spring night, it is a great place to hang with a few friends, chat, and hang out. There is also a backyard area, which is just plain delightful. Love Zombie Hut. They have the best outdoor seating area. It feels like a true tiki bar with an island feel. I'm sure during the winter months this slightly changes, but they have great cocktails at affordable prices to keep you warm and happy. Although they do not offer happy hour, their drinks range from $6-$10. The scorpion bowl is $28. My boyfriend and I tried it. Supposedly it feeds "4" people but we found that we finished it fairly quickly and it had tons of ice. Not sure it was worth it. My favorite drink was the "Suffering Bastard" $9. It was very strong and took me a while to finish. Def worth the money. My boyfriend and I ended up staying all night with friends playing board games and enjoying the end-of-August breeze and music. I came here a couple of days ago, and I must say this place is definitely unique in many aspects! I had so much fun here, and definitely felt like I experienced something unique then all those other run down bars people go to (guilty as charged). As you walk in, you definitely get the Caribbean, tiki bar feel. The hanging lamps are dim, there are masks on the walls, and bamboo and wood decor. They have a wall of board games that you can take and play. They have a variety of drinks, not much of a beer selection, but I seen PBR for $2, not bad. They are definitely not cheap with the liquor, and the prices are affordable. The first thing I did upon arrival was try two of the most popular drinks mentioned on Yelp reviews: 1. TIKI TORCH SHOT: When asking for a tiki torch shot, they will tell you that they can only serve you more than one of these shots. It's $7 a shot. They will give you a mini tiki man shot, with a lemon and salt on top, and pass you a stick with mini marshmallows on it. They will then light the bar on fire around your shots. here are the rules to taking this shot: a) Roast your marshmallow when the bar is lit. b) Take a bite of your lemon c) Take the shot d) Finish it all off by eating your marshmallows I had so much fun taking this shot with my friends The SECOND concoction I decided to get was big enough to share btwn 2-3 people. It's called the SCORPION bowl. It's basically a bowl mixed with different liquors, with a candle lit in the middle, and large straws to drink with. It's $12 for 2 people, and $24 for 4 people. Not a bad deal. This place is definitely group friendly, and if you're up for a new experience, or want to go to a lively bar, Zombie Hut is definitely the place to go. read more

I can't believe I did not find out about this place until recently when E wanted to go to a place that serves punchbowls. Most of the places are in the East Village/LES area so we opted somewhere local so that it'll be a fairly easy trek home. Came here and fell in love. I adore tiki places. Anything that has huts, torches, and island drinks? I'm there. All they are missing is the cabana boy who will serve you drinks whilst wearing a grass skirt and a lei. So anyway, we ordered the Zombie Hut specialty called the Scorpion bowl. It's actually for 4 people but E and I managed to finish that sucker in record time, outside in the patio, in the freezing cold. It has Bacardi 151 (which is either lighter fluid or jet fuel), brandy, and juice. That thing gave me nightmares later on (for real) but you know what? Worth it. They have a host of other summer-y drinks which make you wish you were in an island somewhere being fanned with palm leaves by half-naked islanders. Fun place, needs more zombies! I came here recently on a Sunday night because my friends who usually watch The Walking Dead at their place weren't around, and I really wanted to see the new episode (the season premiere!). I asked in Yelp Talk if there are any bars around that show it. Clever Michael W. replied "Just a guess, but if the name suggest anything... Zombie Hut?" Turns out his guess was wrong. When I got there about a half-hour before showtime, the many TVs were all playing football games, not AMC. Hoping that when 9 rolled around, they'd make the switch, I ordered a drink and checked the place out. They've got Tiki drinks, alright. I kept it simple-ish and ordered a sangria. The bartender said "That'll be $30." I said, "Did you say $30!?" He said, "I was just joking, but wouldn't that be funny?" What a joker; I liked him. The place goes back much farther than it looks like in front and has a big backyard. I could see it would be a great birthday spot and wished I wasn't born at the holidays. They do better with the Tiki theme than most half-assed New York bars that try it, and it looked like a fun crowd of people too. Kind of torn between two and three stars. You are greeted by a very cool exterior and entry door (check out the handle!) and upon entering see a kitchy decorated bar. The weeknight we visited there were only 2 others in the place. There were three of us, and opted for the Scorpion Bowl cocktail. You need to leave your drivers license at collateral m. Apparently there is a black market for mass produced ceramic punch bowls from China. The scorpion cocktail was made with rum, vodka rosa's lime juice (gasp! Not fresh squeezed limes???) and some sort of fructose sweetened drink mixer. There are Ben some sort of slushee machine drinks kind of like at Fat Tuesday. Having been exposed to the likes of the Mai Kai in Ft. Lauderdale, and Trader Sams in Orlando and Cali... this place pales in comparison. But heck if you want to visit a neat little Brooklyn dive and have a synthetically sweetened cocktail, it's not bad. They have a cool outdoor courtyard with bamboo palisade walls and a decent music track. Just don't expect craft cocktails here and you won't be disappointed. Came here on a warm night with former co-workers. I couldn't believe this bar was still around on popular Smith Street, but then I remembered how nice it was back then: 1. comfy although a bit divey and I love the red, floral lanterns at the bar; 2. good outdoor space for summer nights; 3. frozen tiki drinks galore!!! It's been around for ages though, by ages I mean more than a decade. I don't know where it came from but there was a cheesy vibe in the room. Perhaps me and my partners-in-crime for the evening? I brought two visitors with me to the bar over the weekend and the bartender was extremely rude and unprofessional with us as soon as we arrived. They go down easy and are sweetly satisfying on a warm summer night. All individual drinks are $8 and under and the punch bowls come on the rocks or frozen and are very, very well priced($14 for the 2 person bowl or $28 for the 4 person bowl). Did I mention they come flaming? I LOVE the outside space here-three different areas to choose from, all delightful. I recommend the tall tables in the back to drink your flaming bowl of tiki-deliciousness with those long straws that make everything more fun. For the longest time I've been wanting to check out the zombie hut and I was so glad I did. Me and my friend started our night early so we got there before the crowd. I've heard it usually gets packed so I was happy about this. Drinks are decently priced and they also have games to make this more fun. I was happy about that because it was just me and my friend so we didn't have much to do. We tried the frozen zombie which was really good and surprisingly pretty strong. I wasn't excepting that. It came with these little monkey things on the side which was really cute. We also had a Blue Hawaiian which was really yummy. It came with a cute little sailboat. Made the drink a lot cooler. The reason though I'm giving this place such a low rating is because my friend informed me that they ended up charging her card twice. First was the 38 for our drinks and second was the tip. She tipped 5 bucks and even put that the total was 53 so I don't know how they got 15 from that. I think it was one of the bartenders trying to be sneaky and add extra. This is a real shame because we were talking about how much we enjoyed the place and were looking forward to going back.
