I had my regular maintenance in Car Zone. The service is very efficient and pretty amazing. Murph is very careful with all the check-ups, found a hole in our muffler, and fixed this problem even though we did not ask him to do so. We were impressed with his thoughtfulness and honesty. I brought an used car to do a pre-purchase inspection. Oh my god! It was a flood-damaged car! (I was about to buy that car in an hour.) He saved my money and my life! He didn't allow the seller to talk with us putting him in a separate place, and told me quietly what the problem the car has. Now, I don't need to do pre-purchase inspection anymore because I purchased a new car, thanks to him. But I will visit him again and again whenever I have an issue with my car. Due to experiences with other mechanics, I was worried about getting ripped off, but the people at Car Zone are very nice and honest. I took my car (06 civic) here to get the AC looked at since it would randomly stop being cold. Called first for an appointment and was told that the diagnosis would be free. Sweet! Turns out that my car was just low in freon, which they added as part of the diagnostic procedure. It ended up costing me $150, but I figured it was worth it for a functional AC for Boston summers. I also asked about doing an oil change since my car was "due". They could have just taken my money, but they were very honest and showed me that it wasn't actually necessary. Unfortunately, two days later, I noticed that my radiator fan suddenly wouldn't turn off and it drained my battery. Called these guys up to ask if it could have anything to do with the AC diagnosis procedure since it seemed like too much of a coincidence. Brought my car back in and they figured out the problem right away (stuck relay, but did not need replacement). Despite it not being their fault, they fixed it and didn't even charge me! I will be coming back here for future car needs. =] read more

Murph and his team are the best -- we don't take our car anywhere else. They moved recently so they should actually have tons more five star reviews but looks like they didn't transfer over from them old location's Yelp entry. They are always super responsive, answering questions on the phone and taking our car same day every time we have needed them to do so. Today Murph fixed our windshield wiper FOR FREE. Since I reviewed Car Zone the first time, I have been back twice for other maintenence needs, and I have two comments I'd like to add: First, Car Zone is the best place I've ever gone to for car repairs, and it's completely because of Murph. He's good-humored, straightforward, and professional. I appreciate that they charge competitive prices, even though people would pay a premium for his brand of service. He checked my battery, test-drove my car and tried using diagnostic tools, which showed I simply needed a new air filter, and I only got charged for the air filter - no other labor. When I had to return for what I thought was a minor brake issue, and he told me I needed an $800 brake job, I was comfortable telling him to go ahead, knowing I was not being taken for a ride. My only hesitation in writing this is I don't want too many people to discover Murph and make it hard for me to get in for service! My second comment is this: I'm not thrilled with Yelp. My original review was removed from Car Zone's yelp page, with no notice to me. I also work at a small business that relies on word of mouth, and benefits greatly from leads from all our great yelp reviews. But Yelp keeps deleting them, with no good reason. There's apparently some system to "clean" the reviews out, but it's extremely flawed. It stupidly penalizes people who do not post yelp reviews as often as Yelp would like see, and it causes businesses to suffer. Yelp has created forum for people to speak up, makes it seem as though they rating system allows readers to know what others think of those businesses, but then severely skews the content through a highly flawed process. Took our Toyota Rav 4 in to this place. Midas in Brookline quoted more than $2000 to fix leaking power steering fluid and address an Engine Check light. The guys at Car Zone took a quick look and it was a pipe that needed tightening and a fuel cap that was not put back on correctly. Within 5 minutes all was resolved. No leak nor light since. I used to be patronize ABJ in Somerville (see my review) which also has great reviews. However, lately, I've been feeling like they are too busy for work on my car, so I popped onto Yelp and found Car Zone. Being just a mile down the street from me, I have to admit that I've driven by a couple of times and never gave it a second look. However, when I called, they told me I could come by the same day. It was not a big job, just a couple of small things like a flat tire that we thought should be checked out. Murph checked out the tire and the rattling and didn't see anything that he thought should be fixed. The astounding thing is that he let me drive out without wanting a dime for his time! Folks, Car Zone is my new go-to place. I'm due for a big 90K maintenance visit on our other car and you better believe I'm going to have Murph and his guys do the job! read more

First time here (courtesy of Yelp reviews) and was impressed by the responsive and attentive service. I had a great experience here - and I also witnessed about 5 other customers leave similarly pleased while I was there. Murph took my car in about 7 minutes after asking some great questions. He was knowledgeable, articulate, respectful, and quick. I had been failed in a previous state vehicle test by another garage and had a suspicion that the failure was a scam to get me to fund work on my car. Murph was extremely professional, put the car up on the lift and walked me through both what he was looking for and what he was seeing. Murph confirmed my suspicion that the previous mechanic "invented" my vehicle test failure and even offered to go with me to the testing center (saving me another $29 for re-testing elsewhere) to ensure that the previous mechanic did the re-inspection properly. (I opted to do this on my own after the visit) He then had me sit in the passenger seat while he drove around the neighborhood trying to recreate a noise I heard the car make the day before. A few quick adjustments with a screwdriver and I was on my way. Murph didn't charge me for the adjustment or for the fact that he spent about 20 minutes looking at my car. I'm glad to have found such a trustworthy and efficient place to fix my car in the future. read more

Nothing major done, had a check engine light come on and was concerned it was related to a previous shops repair. Ended up being that they didn't top off the engine coolant, which these guys did no charge and sent me on my way. Hopefully won't need it too soon, but will certainly keep them in mind for the next time I need something serviced. read more

With or without an appointment, they usually get me in & out in under 20 minutes. Came in for an oil change and they also filled my tires, checked/topped off all the fluids in my car, and also got some advice on my next set of tires. I've also been here previously for pre-purchase inspections (just showed up with the car's owner with no appointment) and they did a thorough inspection of the vehicle(s) and have saved me more than once from buying a ticking time bomb. Murph & crew are the best. Good, fast, and cheap (who said you can't get all three?). At a minimum, they don't try to rip you off like the average shop in Boston. read more

I can't say enough about Car Zone. I was visiting Boston attending a trade show and needed emergency brake repairs. I called Car Zone after reading the many positive comments. Murph was amazing. My car was making an occasional weird squeaky noise so I brought it in to Murph. He determined that the noise came from metal rubbing on metal and while it sounded annoying it was perfectly safe. He said to fix the noise would require new struts at $600, which he advised against. Murph showed me the broken struts on another customer's car and explained where my noise was coming from and why it wasn't an issue. He didn't charge me anything for the diagnostics and encouraged me to come back in anytime my car was doing something I wasn't sure about. read more

Gosh - Murph and his team cannot do any wrong. They never let me down. Called yesterday if they could do an oil change - his team said to come by whenever and they would take me right in. Always true to their word - came back midday during the week, Murph and his team greeted me with big smiles, handed my keys to his team, and they took my car right in. Waited at the Dunkin Donuts across the street - perfect for getting some work done with their free Wifi - and came back a half hour later to a finished car. Murph is always pleasant - asking me about my plans for Thanksgiving - saying if he doesn't see before then to have a great holiday - what a guy. Oil change and filter cost be a flat $30 - not sure if that is the standard price. Checked my tire pressure and fluid levels. I've been to Car Zone many times. This business well and truly deserves its 5-star rating. My most recent visit was to check on a number of weird noises coming out of the car. I showed up 10 minutes early to my 7am appointment, and was taken care of immediately. Murph offered to put the car up on the jack and go through each weird noise with me. He told me that most of these noises are typical for a car of the same make and age as my car, but the Muffler also had a leak and needed replacement. At this point, a shady mechanic would have attempted to scare me into getting the muffler replaced at their own shop, using dubious parts and billing me thousands of dollars. But Murph assured me that the car is perfectly safe, told me to take my time, and pointed me to a specific muffler shop that could weld something together. Murph's recommendation turned out to be one of the best muffler shops I've ever been, and they welded together a fix for just a hundred or so dollars. This anecdote is typical of my experience at Car Zone. The customer service is absolutely phenomenal, and I have the utmost trust in their recommendations. read more

Murph is like a Car God to me. My 2001 Ford Escape has 136,000 miles, no air conditioning, and made some crazy noises, so I brought it to Car Zone thinking it might be time to cut my losses and sell it. First of all, I didn't have to wait at all for an appt; two hours after I'd dropped it off, Murph called with an estimate for the A/C and had checked the whole car, telling me it was in good shape after all. He finished the repair almost a day early and when I went to pick it up, it was $100 less then he'd estimated! I used to go to Meineke in Brighton but now I will always go to Murph instead. I brought my car to the Jeep Dealership in Medford and they said I had two things that needed replacement. Before doing them, I brought them to Car Zone for a second opinion. The manager Murph put the car on the lift and showed me that both of the things looked totally fine, saving me over $1,000. I've never had a mechanic offer to do that, and it showed his honesty because he only got an oil change out of the deal, but he did gain a customer for life. read more

Murph is as good as it can possibly get in the world of mechanics. Not only is he friendly as heck, but he's also very honest (which is a top quality in a mechanic) - I'll give you an example: I had something wrong with my muffler (the car sounded like a Mustang 5.0 from 1989, but it's a Maxima), and I took it to Murph. When he called me back, he told me what was wrong, but then urged me to go take a look at it with him. When I got there, he put my car on the lift and showed me what was wrong. The last time I had work done on my muffler, some other garage had used very cheap parts and really screwed things up. So what Murph told me was: I can change the whole exhaust system, which will cost you about $1000, and I like to make money, but there is a guy at another place (which is not affiliated with Murph), who can fix it in a different way for around $80. That's obviously a huge difference. This guy would actually rather see me go somewhere else, as long as I get a good deal. I don't know what else you could possibly ask for. Best place to get your car fixed in Cambridge, hands down. read more

These guys did a great job with an oil change for my wife's car. I arranged to call them 10 minutes before I showed up, and they had a slot open for me and I pulled right in. I filled out some info, came back an hour later and the car was ready to go. $30 for an oil and filter change. No fuss, no hassles. It was just really easy. I'd use them again. read more

I couldn't have been happier with my experience here. I dropped off my car here one morning because my brakes were squeaking. I wasn't sure of what to expect, because I had always heard general cautionary tales of unnecessary charges by overzealous mechanics. I received a call about an hour later, and Murph explained that the brakes were fine, but they just happened to make that noise because of their brand. He gave me a few options, and after I chose not to change them, he didn't charge me for the checkup, even though I would have been happy to compensate him for his time. Amazing! read more
