They solved the problem I brought my car in for, but they dangerously overinflated my tires. My front tires take 33 lb pressure according to the label by my front drivers-side door; they inflated one to 48lb. That was according to my dashboard display; I measured a few pounds less with my pressure gauge when I got home. If the pressure had been a couple of pounds high I wouldn't complain, (a pound or so might even be explained by the tires heating up in the stop-and-go driving I did on my way home) but this was extreme. read more

My Subie has a headlight recall that is a year old and may not happen for another year or two. I ordered some HID bulbs and other parts on Amazon. Alewife swapped my headlight bulbs quickly and made sure they were tilted at the right angle (too low is dim and too high is bad for other drivers). They didn't charge me! I gave them $20 to buy lunch. They are so friendly and honest. There also were a lot of women clients who came through the waiting room which is a good sign that they treat customers well with respect and honesty. read more

Call me naive, I don't think George is purposely scamming anyone (despite the used car dealership charisma), I think they have gotten so busy and he's so disorganized that it affects him. Typical promising the moon, and delivering pebbles behavior. So buyer beware, make sure you ask, what day will you start working on it, how long will it take, when will it be completed. I would not bring your vehicle in for work until the part arrived, or they were ready to start working on it. Not everyone has a spare vehicle to get to work. read more

I first found Alewife Automotive when they were at their old location in Arlington. I had my car, at the time, serviced there several times and was very happy with overall service. I moved out of Arlington, and then when I returned, the old Alewife location was no more. I needed to have something looked at on my new car and started the dreaded process of trying to find a mechanic that I could trust. Luckily, I found that they had just moved to Medford. I cannot recommend this place enough. I needed a simple oil change and called about 8 places in the area to get quotes. I've gotten quality oil changes in NY before for around $50. When calling around Medford/Somerville all quotes fell into the $75-$130 range (RIDICULOUS) except for George, who responded immediately with an estimate of $49. I hate to leave a negative review, but I feel that it is warranted in this instance. I've been coming Alewife Automotive for close to a decade. George and the rest of the staff are extremely friendly guys and I've had very positive face-to-face interactions with them. This is to say that my pending critique is not personal. The first issue I've had with Alewife Automotive concerns a cracked taillight that I've tried to have them fix for OVER A YEAR! Every time I bring it up with George or anyone else at the shop, they just tell me that they are still shopping around for the part and they want to make sure they get a good deal for me. In my view, it might be reasonable to delay for a few days until you can find a better price, but to not have that part delivered and fixed for my car in over a year is flatly unacceptable. Not to mention, the general lack of communication or urgency to resolve my issue with my car. BTW, fixing this part of the car is necessary in order to pass vehicle inspection in Massachusetts. But an even bigger deal is my recent experience with Alewife Automotive. Recently, I brought my car in after having my brakes fail while driving on the road. The dashboard lights lit up and it appeared that something was wrong with the ABS module of the vehicle. I had the vehicle towed to Alewife Automotive to have them take a look at it and give me an idea of what was going wrong with my car. I had the car with them for 2 weeks! In those 2 weeks, I didn't receive any updates from them of their own initiative. I always had to reach out to find out what was going on. When I would reach out, I would only get vague answers. But, I was assured that "George is definitely working on it though" and that "We should have an answer by tomorrow", etc. After two weeks of vague an uninformative answers, I finally decided to go into the shop and talk to them face-to-face to get a more detailed explanation of what's going wrong. When I arrived, I noticed that my car was in the same spot it had been towed to. I thought that was suspicious since I was given the impression that George was working hard to figure out the problem. So, I go into the office to get an explanation of what's the issue with my car. I was told that I would need a new/functioning ABS module replacement and that would cost ~$1400. I'm sort of frustrated that it took me walking in to get a straight answer, when I could've been told this over the phone once it was discovered. But, I took it in stride and left the shop to think about my next steps. First, I looked up pricing for the part that I needed and I found that I could get it much cheaper. I return to Alewife Automotive and let them know that I appreciate all their work, but I'm going to take the car to the dealership from here (down the road). I ask if the car was safe to drive there or if I should have it towed. They assured me that it's ok to drive. I drive it to the dealership, and they check to see if they make the required part. They didn't, so I had to order it myself (no problem). After a week, the part arrives and I return to the dealership with the part. We get all set up to have it repaired (including the taillight that George never got around to fixing). As I'm getting back home, I get a call from the dealership. They ask me why did I have to bring in the car in the first place. I mentioned the brake failure that I was experiencing and that I was told by Alewife Automotive that I needed a new ABS module. The mechanics at the dealership told me that before even thinking about the ABS module, they noticed within the first few minutes that I was completely out of brake fluid and they're surprised that my mechanic didn't check that first (As was I). They suggested before they do anything with the ABS module that they do a full scan of my car because it looked like there were a lot more immediate problems. Long story short, they get back to me with a laundry list of problems that would cause me to fail an inspection (including a busted exhaust pipe, etc.). The repairs would cost me around $7000 and that's before they would even know if the ABS module is the primary issue. Obviously, I'm shocked as I would expect Alewife Automotive to catch all of this while diagnosing it. The dealership said "No comment" jokingly. What's even more worrisome is that I had taken my car into Alewife automotive a few weeks prior to determine if it was good shape to drive from Massachusetts to Illinois and they gave me the green light. The dealership says that my car is not safe to drive. I went on that road trip and I don't recall incurring any major damages that would dramatically change the condition of my car in 2 weeks. I really don't think they did much work investigating the issues with my car. Add on top of that the inconsistent to non-existent communication, I can no longer support this business and I would discourage others from doing so. read more

STOP LOOKING FOR ANOTHER MECHANIC. Seriously! Alewife Auto is the only place that I will bring my car to in the future. Last month, I bought a used sedan with 27k miles on it - basically a brand new car. The mechanic who I took it to in Allston for the pre-purchase inspection told me that the car needed front brakes & rotors, spark plugs, air filter, and cabin filter replaced. Tackling the most pressing safety issue first, I got a second opinion about the front brakes with a free brake inspection from a large auto repair chain last week. They told me that I need to change the brakes ASAP, and that the rotors were rusted. They spent all of 30 seconds telling me what was wrong with my brakes. They quoted me an absurd price for parts and labor that was pretty close to what the dealer was charging me. As any broke but thorough student does, I called 24 different auto shops for quotes for the front brakes and rotors replacement. Alewife Auto wasn't even on my original list - I'm thankful I found them through a search engine. When I called Alewife Auto initially, George picked up the phone and I was immediately blown away by how FRIENDLY he was. Most of the other mechanics I talked to just gave me a quote and hung up, but George spent 5 minutes on the phone with me, walking me through what goes into a front brakes/rotors replacement, how long it would take, and when he could see me. I got off of work early today and called to see if George could fit me in today. Not only did he say to come in whenever I am free, I was in and out of the shop in just over an hour. During the repair, George came into the waiting area twice and spent 5 minutes each time: once to show me my old brakes compared to my new brakes, and second, to show me how rusted my old rotors were and what new rotors are supposed to look like. I was so at ease with the repair and knew that he wasn't going to rip me off, since he was so willing to walk me through everything. When I was checking out, he also told me about all of the extra service that he had done (for free)! During the brakes repair, he cleaned off the brake calipers, flushed the brake fluid, and replaced with new brake fluid. He noticed that my front tires were wearing out faster than my back ones, so he rotated the front and back tires. When I asked him if he could take a look at all of the services the pre-purchase inspection had recommended, he also told me that my spark plugs, air filter, and cabin filter were all pristine and that the other mechanic was just trying to rip me off. The total price for the front brakes and rotors repair? 81% cheaper than what the large auto repair chain quoted me, 109% cheaper than the dealer's quote.
