To stand out in the Restaurant/Food/Nightlife scene in New York, it seems you either need to have a flawless product/service or a gimmick, and Zoo Sindang went hard with the gimmicks. They're hidden up a flight of stairs behind a cafe, and they did a great job with decor. Colorful, whimsical flowers and greenery cover the ceiling leading up to the dim lit space, which is sleek and full of east asian iconography, like a buddha statue. To access the menu, you're provided with a stamp and ink pad that will reveal a QR code to scan. Unfortunately despite several attempts, the stamp did not create the sharpest lines and my phone was unable to detect the QR code. They seemed to anticipate this and eventually gave up on trying to get the QR code stamp to work and just directed us to their website. Their drink menu follows a zodiac theme, with each drink representing a different animal on the lunar calendar zodiac. The Tiger stood out to me because it featured dried persimmon, which is one of my favorite fruits. The drink was served in a cute blue ceramic mug which our server proceeded to spill about a tenth of while handing it to me, and did not offer to remake it. I didn't end up enjoying this drink at all, as it was too spirit forward and not at all balanced so I suppose a full drink would've been wasted on me. There were a series of comical gaffes like this, including the host not knowing what to do when I walked in at 5pm to an empty restaurant and asked if they'd accommodate walk-ins. The host seemed to only know how to accommodate folks with reservations until a manager swooped in to help and promptly sat us at the bar. They also served a complimentary appetizer, which was beef wrapped in what I think was a jicama wrapper. I think this would've been nice if I ate red meat, but this was wasted on us and we felt a little bad about it. I was excited for this concept but the drinks didn't pass muster for me.

I came here for drinks recently and had the loveliest time! We came on a Sunday evening so the place wasn't very busy. We sat at the bar and chatted with the bartenders there, and they were an absolute pleasure to talk to--super sweet and easy-going people. The interior is dimly lit, with lots of dark wooden furniture/decor embellished with oyster. There were talismans everywhere and a pretty cool Buddha statue behind the bar. The speakeasy can be a bit hard to find, but just keep an eye out for a bakery with a talisman at the front! I love how their drink menu is inspired by the 12 Lunar zodiac signs. We got their Horse and Snake drink. The Snake drink was very light but had a unique taste, carrying flavor profiles from Korean cuisine. The Horse drink was actually a bit more like a dessert made of boozy carrot juice shaved ice. Both were amazing. They also gave some small complimentary snacks for us to enjoy, but if you are hungry, you can order food from their food menu. Unfortunately, we just came from dinner so we were quite full. Will definitely have to come back to try their food though! And finally, I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the staff is here, and how enjoyable they made the experience. Six stars if I could.

It was my first time there but I was expecting the menu I saw online, not this new one. We tried 2 drinks: one inspired by Turkish figs and one inspired by lemons and the "Miracle Berry", which inverts your palate and turns sour into sweet! I really enjoyed both drinks. The figs one came with a sweet fig granola bite and the lemon one really did taste sweet after eating the "Miracle Berry"! I'd definitely come back to try their many other drinks.

I liked how they organized the menu by country/geography to facilitate an understanding of the flavor profiles. I got two of the date & fig-flavored smoked whisky drinks and it was a well made, balanced, and very good. Not cheap at some $25 or something, but middle of Manhattan with some creative ingredients means I guess it is what it is. Servers seemed a bit annoyed to have to deal with us shortly before close as I think they were hoping to usher people out and close down maybe a little early. One the one hand I get it, on the other hand you've got two paying customers on a slow night.

Patent Pending is has such cool speakeasy vibes, think dimmed lighting and candles at each table in a very intimate space. Our plan was to get wine and a cheese board however, the kitchen was closed due to a family emergency. We could only order chips or bar nuts with our drinks. Disappointing but what can you do? We ordered both the chips and bar nuts to go along with our drinks. And instead of wine, I opted for a cocktail! They have a pretty extensive cocktail menu with all these crazy concoctions. I went for the Strange Magic which was citrusy and refreshing. I'll definitely be back to visit again and hopefully next time will get the cheese board :)

It was dark when we entered the coffee shop but an ajar door gave way to the bar. The decor is a homage to the works of Nikola Tesla, which can be seen in the subtle electric theme throughout the space and the naming of the cocktails. The space isn't too large - the bar and stools take up most of the space but they also have some booths/tables. The place looks great. The cocktail menu is very creative - I got one of their seasonal mixes that was actually two drinks in one. The main cocktail was meant to be sipped first and they provided a small glass of beer to be sipped after. The name escapes me but it was very good. Since we had cocktails at dinner, we only stayed for one round. Service was good, and overall I enjoyed my time at Patent Pending. I would definitely return to explore more of their menu.

As I walked in and saw just how swanky this place is I panicked - there was no way we could just walk in here without a reservation, right? But the hostess was, thankfully, so down to earth. I was straight up like hey I totally messed up and thought we could just walk in here, she was like you know what, let me see what we have. Lo and behold, she did have a table for us - as long as we were out in an hour and a half, which was just the right amount of time. Stepping into this place feels like you're in some secret, super special cocktail club. Decor is super high end, vibes are upscale AF. The cocktail menu is incredible -- and incredibly pricey, but truly worth it. I ordered the Valentino which was strong and sweet, really well made. They gave out a complimentary nut mix that was also delicious. Service was swift and gracious. If you're looking for a spot to impress a date, this is it.

There's also seating on the second floor, perfect for couples or small groups. I tried two of their cocktails when I went. The first was the Eastern Julep, a delicious twist on a classic. The mint Moroccan tea gave the drink a cool, refreshing taste on every sip. I also tried the Silver Screen, the closest drink I could find to an old fashioned. It was interesting, there was definitely a hint of a buttery taste. Overall a really balanced bourbon drink. I walked in and found room at the standing tables. A bar seat eventually opened up but I was already on my second drink by then. Definitely make reservations if you're planning a visit!

The well-crafted cocktails present thoughtful riffs on the classics, inventive without being showy. While the dim lighting and intimate atmosphere practically beg for a secret rendezvous (there's an ostrich involved), I met up with a friend for the decidedly unscandalous purpose of doing our intention setting for the year over libations and nibbles. I opted for a pastel sour while my companion asked for a drink called The Last Word - it was no longer on the menu but they obligingly made it for us anyway. The menu consists of mostly small plates and is seafood forward, but we shared a petite dish of steak frites, tender and cooked perfectly medium rare. Our server was very sweet but service was slow on the night, and by the time we received our utensils the food was cold. However we were not rushed and were able to linger a bit to finish our conversation. For those who savor finely concocted cocktails paired with fresh raw bar offerings in a salon-like setting, this is the spot for you.
