Many years ago, zookz was a staple for my family, anytime we went to Phoenix, we would go. Then I got a gluten allergy and tearfully haven't been back. Randomly I thought about them and was shocked they had gluten free bread now. My kids were difficult, saying nothing sounded good, acting all picky over everything but they gave in trying something new. Apples and cranberries on a sandwich, the horror! And she hates mustard but left it on, guess what, it's her favorite! Everything was just as we remember. It will be back on our regular rotation. My only complaint is the sides. I have never been a fan of the sides and they haven't changed lol. I wish there was a less adventurous side option, like fruit or a simple salad. But I think I am alone in the complaint lol. I finally made it to a Zooks! The young woman at the front was welcoming and helpful despite me being a little indecisive. I went with the bang bang burger and kale salad -- a side comes with the lunch sandwiches. I was hesitant on kale but she mentioned it gets great feedback and I am glad I tried it! The kale salad has citrus and other goodies in it (sorry, I forget what!) and the kale wasn't tough at all. The dressing is lightly sweet and refreshing. Definitely recommend! The bang bang burger was delicious and filling without being overly heavy. They also had cans of local beer - Huss Blonde and Papago Orange Blossom - and a couple of speciality cocktails, along with various canned and bottled non-alcoholic drinks and fountain drinks. Its a cute shop with a patio and one side was open to the nice weather. A woman stopped to check in - I think she was the manager - who was really nice. For what it is, I think Zookz absolutely hits the bal out of the park. Serving hot sandwiches with cold salads/chips is such an underrated duo, and this place puts their own, well-executed spin on it. We ordered the Biltmore and the BLT and both had such great flavor, with an immaculate combination of ingredients to go inside of it. We also LOVED the potato salad. I'd go for that alone. Okay this is place is definitely a place I would recommend for people to try when in Arizona. The unique sandwich formed into crater like is amazing! It's amazing how based on the outside, it looks burnt and you would assume the inside would be dry. Surprisingly the inside was actually not dry. My family and I ordered the here comes the sun, daybreak in mexicali, and california dreaming blt. Here comes the sun had 2 poached eggs with bacon, cheese, cream cheese, and tomatoes. I find it interesting how they were able to keep the egg still poached even inside the crater like bread. Daybreak in mexicali had 2 poached eggs with chorizo, jack cheese, red onions, avocado, potatoes, and creamy buttermilk dressing. I'm not really a fan of chorizo, but if you like chorizo then this sandwich is for you. The cheese pull was beautiful and anything with avocado, I will order. Out of all the sandwiches we ordered, my favorite is the california dreaming blt; which had turkey, bacon, avocado, tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, and sweet heat mustard. I'm a bacon/avocado girly so this had my name all over it. I also ordered a cinnamon iced coffee, which was also pretty good for a sandwich spot. I was driven even more by the fact that my South African husband always talked about having pressed sandwiches made over the fire by a "snackwicher"... and these looked similar to what he described. So I was pleasantly surprised to read the owners' story on the restaurant wall about idea coming from her grandmother in Egypt. It's a beautiful testament and it creates a heartfelt connection for the customer. Really cute restaurant. Small on the inside but they have a cute patio that runs along the side and the front. We sat on the side and really enjoyed it. It is not sit down though. You order at the front, take a number, and they bring you your food. The parking situation is honestly kind of a mess. It's near a Safeway and there is a Bobby q's and a lot of stuff going on so the parking lot feels hectic. We were lucky to find a parking right in front though. Service was good. No complaints. We had a lot of questions as it was our visit time visiting and the person taking our order thoroughly answered our questions and helped us make a decision. Food was yummy! The sandwich was not oily and the egg was cooked to perfection. The egg white was thoroughly cooked and the yolk was runny. It was an immaculate egg in my opinion. I'd come to a Zookz Sandwiches for the first time (and only that one time) years ago and honestly remember it being such a great sandwich. No idea why I never ended up going back but recently I was in the area, grabbing a coffee at Hava Java with a friend, and I had to try it again to see if it was as good as I'd remembered. I came by on a Saturday around lunchtime so there were a few other people eating as well but for the most part was relatively empty. I ordered a BLT at the counter, which came with a choice of chips or salad (which I picked chips), and sat down. The food came pretty quickly - at first glance the sandwich is by no means a hefty looking portion of food and the small plate it's on is also not doing it any favors. Personally, I actually ended up finding the sandwich and chips to be a perfect portion for myself but if you are really hungry and have a bit of a bigger appetite, it may not be enough. Now getting to my actual thoughts on the food - the sandwich was definitely as good as I remember, maybe even better. The "bread" was so perfectly crispy, warm, and satisfying. Paired with the savory / fresh BLT ingredients and surprisingly slightly sweet sauce, it was a perfect sandwich for me. This place has been here for so long, but somehow I'd only gone for the first time last month. What a fun find! The place is casual, very small and straight to the point with a counter to order from and a few tables inside or out. The food is GOOD with basic but hearty sandwiches that come toasted and crustless, and a few staple side offerings. The staff at the counter helped guide my order and I ended up with exactly what I didn't even know I wanted (turkey with avocado and red peppers + potato salad + an iced chai). 6/21/25: Short version - after reading many of the 5-star reviews, I was very excited to try Zookz. This particular Saturday morning, we finally made the trek. After the underwhelming experience, neither of us have any urge to return, but we're glad we at least tried something new. Long version - don't get me wrong, it is definitely a cute little place, with a huge amount of dog-friendly patio space for guests -- and yes! they have misters. There are patios on the west, north, and east sides of their space. They had small cups of lemonade & fresh-squeezed OJ sitting on ice up at the counter (the OJ was delicious); my sister ordered a large iced salted caramel mocha (it was 3/4 ice). The offer Coke products, and after sitting on the north patio saw a couple of tea options in their self-serve beverage aisle. We ordered The Zinger and Morning Has Broken. 1) They came out quickly, cut in half, 2) they are on the small size; I would say about an 1" smaller in diameter than the bottom of a gallon of milk; 3) served on compostable plates, which I was happy to see considering everything else was plastic (straws, cups, silverware). We both took a half of the other's Zookz. Neither of us felt they were overly flavorful. My sister said the Zinger def needed more zing. Another reviewer mentioned her sandwich came with either a side salad or a bag of chips -- which is does, IF you pay extra. Don't go in thinking you'll get a free side. In the end, was Zookz good? It was all right. Would we go back for another try? No, it wasn't good enough to warrant the 15 mile drive again. read more

I've tried the number 20, 10, and 45. My favorite is the #45, it's like a burger. I also really like the chips they offer as a side option. I didn't really like the kale salad when I tried it, it tasted like it had been made a few days before. Sandwiches always come out quick when you order online and in person. After eying Zookz since they opened, I finally decided to pop in and check it out. It was close to 2pm on a Friday and I was hungry for lunch... I looked at the menu and decided to go with No 20, and I was not disappointed. I did not realize that they mix all the ingredients together inside the sandwich until I took my first bite, but was pleasantly surprised! Each bite included the turkey, bacon, cheddar, avocado and sweet heat mustard sauce. And, of course, the bread was perfectly toasted and so delicious! I went with the kale salad as my side, but admittedly, got distracted and did not get to try it. I will have to return to do so next visit, which will likely be for breakfast as No 88 is calling my name: No. 88 (VEGETARIAN) 2 egg white frittata, parmesan, kale (tossed with carrots), tomatoes, avocado, and zookz zinger cream cheese sauce. I love that this is a fast, casual concept, conveniently located, with friendly service, moderate prices, inside / outside seating, and plenty of parking. It's not often you come across a restaurant that has found a way to be truly innovative. Zookz seems to have invented the perfectly portable hot sandwich. Perhaps they use a Texas Toaster or some such device? I dunno but they are really wonderful, if a little overpriced. (just under $10 for a breakfast sammie) I had the No 22 breakfast sandwich and really enjoyed it. They were generous with the ingredients, nice big hunk of avocado in there. I was greeted right away and the menu was even explained to me- they offer breakfast all day and #20 and #26 are the most popular sandwiches. Very friendly service! I ordered the #20, turkey, bacon, avocado and tomatoes. It came with a side- I chose kale salad. My meal was made fresh and came out in under 5 minutes. The portion size was just perfect. Sandwiches can be messy to eat while in the car but not this one- they even serve it on a paper plate and it is easily held without everything falling out. It was pressed perfectly and was so tasty. I cannot speak higher about my experience here. As someone that's gluten intolerant it's hard to find good sandwich bread. I got the California Dreaming BLT on gluten free bread and it was DELICIOUS. My mom and I stopped by and tried this place for the first time, because the pictures looked good. We ordered the Morning Has Broken breakfast sandwich with potatoes al gratin side and an It's All Good vegetarian sandwich with kale side salad. The food looks amazing but disapoints with each bight. Both sandwiches lacked seasoning and some kind of sauce. They tasted bland. The potatoes al gratin looks very good but also lacks something. After looking up best sandwiches in Phoenix, I stumbled on Zookz. I was instantly intrigued by the odd look of these sandwiches and had to try them. The inside of the restaurant is very small, but there is ample outdoor seating. Too bad we live in Arizona and sitting outside is miserable. I was excited to try Zookz sandwiches because I was hoping the outside would be flaky, buttery and delicious. It was not. It actually tasted like the outer rim of those terrible swansons microwavable pot pies....you know, the part nobody eats. Dry and flavorless. It's really too bad, because my wife and I loved the inner ingredients of the sandwiches and just scooped them out. We just wished they would just offer regular bread and stop trying to be quirky.
